- Jason (10/5): A fantastic gem in a fantastic location! -
- Holly (10/5): - The host was so incredibly helpful and everything was set up with so much care, absolutely beautiful home and was the perfect place to relax and reset after a long day of travelling No improvements needed!
- Timothy (9/5): We enjoyed having an experience like this while in Kyoto. - It was authentic and modest
- Myan (10/5): - The Machiya was very clean and offered a stay close to Kyoto's Pontoncho Alley and a station. The facilities were amazing and the tatami floor could be warmed up which was a lifesaver in this winter! The view of snowfall in the little garden was so beautiful too. Tomomi San was very friendly too and super helpful- I would reccomend this stay for anyone looking to experience a traditional japanese home.
- Sally (10/5): - Great location. The house was cozy, comfortable and peaceful. Our host was responsive and friendly. We highly recommend staying here!
- Ng (9/5): -
- Meron (10/5): - The host Tomomi is absolutely amazing. The place is clean, great washroom, quiet area, and comfortable. Only thing is I wish we could stay there longer!
Highly recommended!!
- Giuseppe (10/5): Superlativo!
- Alexander Kundin (9/5): Fantastic! Highly recommend!!! - Excellent location. Walking distance to everything
- John (8/5): Nice quiet property close to major attractions in Gion. - Well situated in a quiet street close to major attractions. Fantastic host who helped with great advice and restaurant bookings. Kitchen facilities a little basic with no champagne or water glasses. Living area a bit uncomfortable but functional. Steep stairs which we had to be careful not to fall down but otherwise good. Really only one useable bedroom.

- Leilani (8/5): Great location for exploring - easy to walk for temples, shopping, and enjoying the older part of the city. - Great location Futons were pretty flat - I know they are supposed to be “authentic“ for the experience, but, they are not at all comfortable. We had to use all the pads to get somewhat comfortable.
- Tomer (10/5): - Very clean, location was perfect, host anser very fast for every question. It was so nice that we just bought food in the supermarket and ate at home Nothing
- Carlos (9/5): A Perfect Family Stay in a Traditional Kyoto Ryokan - Reikaku Kiyomizu Gojo offers all the charm and details of traditional Kyoto, from the tatami floors and sliding doors to the onsen-style bathroom and authentic décor. The full bathroom with a bathtub overlooking the garden is fantastic, and the house also has two toilets, which makes it very convenient when staying with several people. The house is very comfortable, peaceful, and just a short walk from Kiyomizu-dera. Communication with the host was excellent, which made everything very easy. Overall, a wonderful place to experience the true essence of Kyoto. Informative comment for future guests: Please take some precaution when using the staircase to the second floor, as it is narrow and steep. The house also has no exterior sign in Western characters, so it may take a moment to find among the similar houses on the street.
- Victoria (9/5): We loved this house - Lovely house
So central
Loved the area
Perfect host!

- Douglas (8/5): Very happy stay - Proper traditional Matchyia town house
Tomori the host was great You have to be very careful on the stairs because they are pretty steep
- Samantha (10/5): Awesome!! - Love it! Everything was amazing!!
- Kaylie (10/5): Absolutely in love with this property and will for sure stay here again. Great for a small group :) - The home was gorgeous with modern touches while still maintaining the traditional style. 2 toilets very convenient, and the beds were clean and comfy. We loved having breakfast from the nearby konbini at the low traditional style table. It was so aesthetically pleasing here, quiet and comfortable. Small garden to look at while you showered was a nice touch. My allergies acted up a little bit i believe from small amount of dust / the tatami mats, place was very clean but that’s just a personal issue with my specific allergies. Nothing a little antihistamine couldn’t fix.
- Matthew (10/5): Authentic japanese accomodation in a quiet area - Great location, away from main city, but close enough to get anywhere with a 20 minute walk to the train. Authentic accommodation, well designed and thoughtful.
- Lily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amber (10/5): Exceptional - The heated floors and the shower were amazing!! Perfect for our trip in early spring! The rooms were well insulated, and the beds were very comfortable. The house was beautiful and felt very traditional, while still having many contemporary comforts. The hosts were very responsive and polite when we contacted them. The house is also located just off of a main road. It is a bit far from activities and stations, at least 15 minutes walk from most places we went. The bedrooms are on the second floor, which is accessed via a very steep and narrow staircase. The automatic toilet seat lids take a little getting used to.
- Leanne (10/5): Lovely traditional house, amazing bath. - Clean, comfortable, really lovely traditional style house with amazing bath (fits two very comfortably). Comfortable beds, lots of space for the two of us. Easy access process, sweet and thoughtful service (via messages), luggage access available before and after stay. We loved it, would have happily stayed longer. Not a problem for us but the internal stairs would probably be difficult for some mobility-restricted folks. Similar note that the area is very cute but will need to walk a bit to get to public transport. To sit at the table you'll also want to be about to sit on the floor.
- Katerina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Abderahmane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional space with a wonderful host! - Very communicative host who provided comprehensive welcome information and a guide to the home. All items were as promised from bedding to amenities in a spotlessly clean space. I highly recommend this home to any traveler and thank my host for an amazing first time experience in Kyoto!
- Spencer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sally (9/5): Superb - Beautiful accommodation with feel of the traditional accompanied by the comfort of some “modern” conveniences. The place was a bit difficult to locate after dark and the stairs to/from the 2nd floor was a bit precarious for older guests and those with larger feet. It seems that last step was not easy to see.
- Alfred (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable home in great location. Well equipped kitchen. Good check-in instructions and good communication with host.
- Harry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ayeisha (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful house and very clean. Nothing
- Alan (9/5): Superb -
- Livia (10/5): Home away from home - Amazing traditional Japanese house in the heart of Kyoto. Very clean and comfortable, with all the amenities. Everything was perfect.
- David (10/5): A very comfortable and convenient house to come back to after a long day of sight-seeing. - Lots of room for four adults. Beautiful bathroom with great shower and wonderful soaking tub. Kitchen was well-equipped with electric kettle and espresso maker and coffee pods. Thank you for the water bottles! Beautiful tatami rooms and very comfortable beds! Appreciated bathroom upstairs and downstairs. Great air conditioning! stairs were a little steep. Two more sitting chairs would be nice.
- Ino (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ino (10/5): A nice gem in Kyoto - It is in a quiet neighborhood but with easy access to public transportation locations and attractions. Not much except for some help on getting help with the hot water heater instruction.
- Anh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eszter (10/5): Exceptional - Pure authenticity merged with cutting-edge, comfort-driven technology - airconditioning, dehumidifier, floor heating, everything that a guest who wants to enjoy traditional japanese living with utmost comfort can wish for. The location is superb, the house is spacious, the atmosphere is sweet and serene. Some interior peieces are very delicate so you always have to pay attention to keep them clean, dry etc. - eg. the bathroom sink counter. So staying here needs conscious attention to your sorroundings. It is of course not a problem, on the contrary, it makes this place even more special. But surely, it is something to stay attentive to.
- Pablo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Erica (8/5): Very good -
- Zongye (9/5): Superb -
- Tara (10/5): Exceptional - Such a cute, culturally authentic property. We loved our stay here! Great location too!
- Jodie (10/5): Absolutely adored it and was sad to leave. - Fabulous to experience life in a Japanese home.
- Kimberly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caroline (9/5): Beautifully traditional for an authentic Japanese experience but not recommended for families with young children due to - Very private and clean. Central so you can get access to buses and trains within 1km of the location. Very responsive host to any questions we had about the property; getting there and so on. The rubbish bins were unfortunately too small for our 3 night stay. There is an option for someone to come clean but only for a 4 night minimum stay. We were only two people and we filled all the bins by the second day.
- Jonas (10/5): A great machiya to stay - It's a great place to stay as a couple as it has 2 beds. So you can try sleeping on futons, and if it's not for you, switch back to beds.
The place itself is spaceous and does not have any bordering buildings, so all 4 house walls are away from other houses.
Furthermore it's located in walkable distance to a lot of tourist destinations like Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Pagoda.
The neighbourhood is quiet.
Overall, it is a great place to stay if you want to experience Kyoto in a traditional way, together with a good-sized bath to a garden.
Just keep in mind that machiya's don't have thick walls.
- Grace (10/5): Breathtaking and beautiful accommodation. Highly recommended if staying in Kyoto - Absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend staying here!
- Jia (9/5): Superb - It's a very lovely home. Stayed with friends and family of 5 - the house was spacious and very comfortable to accommodate all of us. The host is really nice as well. Would come back to stay again if we have another chance.
- Aaron (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (9/5): Good experience overall. - Very nicely decorated and very good ambience. The washing/dryer is good and easy to use. Beds/futons are comfortable. Good location with easy access to lots of places. Upon arriving to the property, it would be much more comfortable to have the whole house air conditioners turned on especially during the very hot summer months. Also, the two sofas need ‘restuffing’ because the seats sink in the middle making quite uncomfortable when seated in it for a while.
- Shu (9/5): Superb - Location.
Nice bath.. Some noise from group of people chatting outside hostel opposite the accommodation.
(8/5): Very good - Have the good tradition building and structure! Nothing
- Joanne (8/5): Nice experience and very friendly and helpful staffs. - Nice experience of machiya especially in traditional town Kyoto. The Japanese speaking cab drivers who don’t use GPS does not know way to the address and simply drop us off by the road. We were unfortunate to have met 3 such drivers.
- Deborah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (8/5): very good - very traditional a bit far from the center Gion (walking distance 15 min)
- Alyssa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pierre-luc (10/5): Exceptional -
- Darby (10/5): - Great location and wonderful home!
- Christian (10/5): wonderful - beautiful, traditional, immaculate, clean had to bring down futons for older seniors who had trouble with steep staircase
- Gib (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alvin (9/5): i loved the ambiance of the house and its huge for 2 of us. best for a group or family. - very cozy its a little ways off from central Kyoto
(10/5): good stay very comfortable - all things good nothing
- Jan (10/5): Beautiful, comfortable, clean & conveniently located. Would definitely recommend! -
