- Star-ra (1/5): Distressing and unacceptable, with cockroach infestation , filthy rooms - Dear [Booking.com / Consumer Protection WA / Motel Management],
I am writing to lodge a formal complaint regarding my recent stay at Carnarvon Gateway Motel on 3–4 November 2025. My experience was appalling, distressing, and far below acceptable health and safety standards.
Upon checking in, I was assigned a room that was infested with cockroaches, visibly dirty, and contained someone else’s clothing from a previous guest. When I called the motel owner to report this, I was met with rudeness and indifference. She told me to “squish them and deal with it,” despite me explaining that I had already killed several cockroaches and could see more crawling along the walls while on the phone with her. When I asked what could be done, she replied, “What do you want me to do about it?” and then hung up on me.
At this point, I was extremely upset and prepared to sleep in my car, as every other accommodation in Carnarvon was fully booked. Approximately 40 minutes later, a staff member knocked on my door and apologised for the situation. He inspected the room, confirmed the infestation, and began searching for an alternative room with me.
Over the next two hours (from 11:00 PM until around 1:00 AM), we inspected approximately 30 different rooms, all of which were infested with cockroaches, filthy, and in disrepair. Many rooms had heavy dust build-up, mould in the bathrooms, ripped bedding, and visible spider webs. One even had a frog inside. The overall state of the motel was disgraceful and unsanitary.
Eventually, I was placed in a room that the staff member admitted was “blocked off” because it did not have a working fire alarm a major safety violation. While this room also had cobwebs and a noticeable odour, it was the cleanest available, and I was completely exhausted from hours of searching.
This entire ordeal left me distressed, exhausted, and disgusted. The conditions at Carnarvon Gateway Motel present clear health, hygiene, and safety risks.
- Liam (4/5): Very basic. Okay if you are just stopping over for the night and leaving first thing the following d - It was convenient for my travel The general cleanliness of the room, Towels, Shower. There were bugs in the room. The bed wasn’t very comfortable. The curtains stick out from the window by at least an inch which causes any light outside of the room to come in.
- Rick (6/5): -
- Leslie (1/5): - The lady at reception was nice and polite. The room was dirty and just outdated, stains on the sheets with hair and dirt from previous people.
Room had an old musky smell, aircon loud and noisy.
no one even bothered putting new toilet rolls up left the old ones hanging.
- Kaye (8/5): Only stayed overnight. It served our purposes. - once the buffet emptied, nothing else was brought out to replace some of it. At 40 dollars a head it was a dissapointment
- Kellie (7/5): A comfortable and clean overnight stay when travelling the West coast. - Carnarvon Gateway Motel is a comfortable, clean and accessible motel. The staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming and did a great job at maintaining the accommodation. I was unable to sample the food, but it looked like a very good spread. The laundry room could use an overhaul and the machines updated. Some external lighting would also help with accessing the area after dark.
- Vella (3/5): ok - Cleanliness and cleaning the room during housekeeping
- Colin (3/5): For the price you pay stay somewhere else - outdated and most rooms smelt like sewerage - nothing The premises are old and outdated for the price you pay I'd definitely stay somewhere else, I don't think anything has been upgraded since 1980 - most rooms smelt like sewerage. Stains on walls, bedding and carpet.
- Natasha (10/5): -
- Diane (8/5): - i have a meal in the dinning room its was an overall pleasant experience the room was comfortable andvery clean and well fitted out overall experience was very good and yes i wopld happily stay again
- Padillah (5/5): Luckily it’s only 1 night - Nothing it’s old It’s ok nothing fancy paying too much
- Angus (7/5): - Location No breakfast or water for drinking
- Napaphut (1/5): แอร์ไม่เย็น ในอากาศที่ร้อนมาก ไม่สามารถนอนได้ ไม่คุ้มกับที่จ่ายเงิน - สถานที่หาง่าย Air conditioning not working good
- Takeia (10/5): The best place to stay - The staff were so friendly, there was an amazing buffet and the facilities had everything we needed. Nothing; it’s fantastic
- Grant (6/5): Food at the restaurant was sub par -
- Michael (8/5): -
- Karissa (3/5): Disappointing room for premium price - Convenient.
Dog friendly Run down shabby room.
Holes in threadbare carpet
Old random furniture
Holes in threadbare sheets on beds
Microwave didn’t work
Fridge was warm
Minimal crockery - 3 bowls, 2 side plates, 1 dinner plate - for a family room.
- Hamlett (4/5): I didn’t end up staying at the motel because they already gave my booking away -
- Yu (4/5): In my opinion I didn't receive value for money spent on the room. . - The location was good and staff service at front desk was excellent. Having a door on the toilet is great. Plenty of space to put Toiletries. The sheets were paper thin, very worn out. Time to buy new sheet sets. The entrance to the room was dirty with leaves and dust. Bed spread had stains, carpet is old and stained. Bathroom is out dated but okay. Curtains had holes in them.
- Mike (5/5): - Not much The shower head
- Ron (8/5): Only one night - Good value for money and it was quiet. Wifi was good TV wouldn’t switch on but we had our iPads
- auto (1/5): -
- Pam (5/5): ? - The room was large and comfortable and clean The internet was out the whole time so no tv also used most of my mobile data. At 2am the room next doors car alarm wrnt off consequently woke me and that was the start of my day driving to perth
- Tleena (6/5): -
- David (10/5): -
- Jill (5/5): Good location - Location and pet friendly. Very outdated. Could do with revamping.
Stayed there 29 years ago and nothing had changed.
- Ron (9/5): It was only one night but is a nice spot for a quiet break. Stayed here twice before and will stay again - Lovely staff Liked it all
- Roxy (5/5): - Close distance to visit family Pool facilities
- Brenda (5/5): Misleading signage, smelly bed, old motel, only accommodation option left, disappointing. - Location was pretty good.
There was nothing else to note except it was very unclean. Advertised nightly buffet, which did not exist even though the neon sign out the front of the motel displayed it throughout our stay. Excuse for continuing to advertise the buffet was no one had acess to the computer even though the previous staff member with access was reported to have long left their employment. we said just unplug the sign as that is all they had on it. the linen looked clean but the bed and pillow smelt of old urine and had to be covered to be able to sleep, never experienced this before.
- Reid (2/5): - The bed was comfortable. The staff where nice. The roomd are very outdated. Needs a good overhaul. The curtain only just hanging on. Didn't like the stained towels, the stained bedspead, the mess not cleaned up on the chair. The stained chair also and to finish it off the dirty fat cock roach that came running out of the fridge when I went for a drink.
- May (10/5): - Comfortabke
- Kevin (7/5): -
- Winlo (8/5): -
- Guy (7/5): Good location for an overnight with easy access in and out. Friendly staff. - Great location for a motel if you just overnighting in Carnarvon. Good facilities in the room for preparing food if your late or have your food with you. Spacious , basic clean room . The receptionist was fantastic- he got me a takeaway meal and a couple of beers that I could heat up in my room. I think $170 for a night is overpriced . The Hospitality is cheaper, cleaner and better rooms and a nicer location by the river. $150 is a fairer price. Watch out - they make you wash your dishes or they charge you $30 on your card !
- Josie (4/5): -
- Namok (8/5): -
- Silvana (7/5): -
- L (5/5): -
- Bolitho (1/5): Would not recommend. I dealt with 2 staff members, both were pleasant. - Location and ease of booking last minute. The room was very run down. Curtains hanging off allowing the carpark traffic to see into kids rooms. Holes in walls, handles hanging or missing off draws/cupboards. Sheets and carpets stained, dirty walls. Bathroom - I felt like we needed to wear shoes in the shower. Towels were so thin, I hate to think of how old they are. I did not complain at time of stay - arrived late evening and left early morning. Did not try the dinner options.
- Kelly (10/5): Quick stopover - Was great for a stop over and had good amenities N/A
- Nigel (4/5): -
- Darryn (9/5): -
- Devasundaram (8/5): It's okay for overnight stay - The food was expensive Buffet and not good quality... Its the same all over Western Australia... They don't have even good fish and chips.... The Bacon Chips is the worst Australian food The food and accommodation price must be lower, and food quality better
- Gail (8/5): Would stay again - Pleasant stay and convenient. Location was good as travelling threw for 1 night
- Jamie (10/5): -
- Rob (4/5): -
- Baggamal (8/5): -
- Sarah (1/5): Avoid and read reviews prior. Daylight robbery at $170 a night for this accommodation. - Location Blood stained carpets, dirty room with no flushing toilet! Cockroach in room.
Absolutely stank
Worst accommodation I've ever stayed in.
- Jaycee (1/5): Disgusting - Absolutely nothing Wouldn’t recommend anyone staying here.
Kids were excited to swim in the pool after a long drive, checked in (no talk of pool) got dressed and head down there and ‘pool under maintenance’ sign up was up and pool was closed. First weekend of school holidays and no communication whats so ever.
But it gets much worse.
Room was very averagely cleaned, stains on towels and just overall icky.
We open the drawer on the tall boy to find a USED needle.
Disgusting and disappointing.
Have emailed and messaged hotel and not heard back from them. Pretty poor effort.
Will never be back and don’t recommend to anyone, especially with kids. Stay at the other hotels in town.
- Aung (7/5): -
- Rhondda (6/5): Love staying at the gateway but the bed ws uncomfortable this time. - Clean, centrally located The bed in the unit had a lumpy mattress.
- Roger (8/5): Good room - Very convenient location
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Murdoch (9/5): - Room next to highway. Too much traffic noise.
- William (8/5): -
- Sonia (10/5): AMAZING!! - Sunday Roast buffet was epic. Room was clean and tidy, bed very comfortable! Staff friendly.
- alex (9/5): -
- Graeme (8/5): -
- Jonathan (6/5): It was fine for a 1 night stay. - Short distance from town Very dated and grounds not well maintained
- Larissa (10/5): - It was a nice stopover before heading up north. I enjoyed my brief stay, nice comfortable beds and the restaurant was very convenient after a long day of driving. I don't think there was anything I could fault.
- VICKI (6/5): The room was available at short notice and the bed was quite comfortable. - It was available. There was a kettle, toaster and microwave in the room and plates and cutlery were provided. Tired room facilities though the room appeared clean ,we noticed that the room carpet was grubby.
The shower rose was a poor stream, though the hot water was plentiful.
The grounds are all tired and unkempt.
- Felix (7/5): - Meals could have been different. Only a seafood buffett nothing else.
- Elaine (3/5): -
- Lisa (6/5): -
- Neil (2/5): - Not much! No pool ( shut for "maintenance"), no wifi in room ( only in reception area) : was told this when checking in . Not mentioned on their website. Neon signage said breakfast : but none available.
The place is in urgent need of an upgrade & only just clean enough.
The curtain in my room had no hooks at one end, so it stayed shut : someone was going to fix it but never did.
- charli (1/5): - The after hrs services were good Not alot
- Mark (5/5): Ok for a quick overnight stop, but needs a complete update. - Conveniently located for a short overnight stop. Very dated Motel. Strange smell of drains in the room. Unable to open any of the windows, had to leave the door open for 30 mins to air the room. Room very dark, unable to open the fixed heavy curtain at the window. Restaurant food was good, nice Roast evening buffet.
- Lindsay (4/5): Fine for a sleep and dash - This is a bit of a conflicting review to write, so please, bear with me.
If you are looking at booking in for a night as a stop through on your way to another destination, this place was great. The beds are comfy and the water is hot! Sure the decor is outdated but you aren’t there long enough to really care.
But if you are looking to stay for a few nights or longer while you explore the town and bring some much needed tourism dollars into the region, then I think you can find another place with better ammenities that make a longer stay more comfortable and enjoyable.
As mentioned above, the room was okay, but it is certainly dated. The curtains are falling off the rails and are hard to open. The windows barely open and there are minimal kitchen utensils that make it a little difficult to prep and cook. The drawers and dressers are falling apart and were not safe to use. These are quite easy fixes in the grand scheme of things, but are clearly not a priority for the owners.
The playground was unsafe and unusable and the pool was closed for maintenance which provided the kids limited options to burn off their energy, especially when there are no other local parks in walking distance.
Maybe as this place is a motel, I am not their targeted clinetele and it is the ‘sleep and dash’ people they prefer but then I do believe they should not advertise amenities that they clearly have no desire to maintain but offer as a draw card for families looking to holiday in Carnarvon
- Wini (4/5): One night only - In need of refurb Circa 1908 Old fashioned with bad reception area
Dining room old fashioned with plastic flowers etc seemed more like an old retirement home
Outside area poorly lit at night as was cabin doors
Good thing : a good sturdy lock on door and chain
No safe
No wifi
- Nadine (6/5): -
- Nanii (10/5): -
- Michael (6/5): Being more spread out throughout the complex would have felt more comfortable.Liken to being in a caravan park and force - Was clean and central to town centre. All guests placed next to each other making parking awkward trying to manipulate luggage through to door.
The complex was vast with many unoccupied units so crowding everyone into one location was unnecessary and frustrating with noise from neighbouring residents.Garden to front of unit overgrown and unsightly.
Also local TV advertising buffet for dinner. This was not available anytime.Toilet seat was also broken.
- David (6/5): -
- Susan (8/5): - Location Nit enough outdoor tables
- Aung (8/5): -
- Joanne (9/5): -
- Michelle (1/5): extremely brief checked out a couple of hours after booking in due to the state of the room - nothing The rooms were disgusting, the bed covers had stains on them, as wells a crumbs. the carpet was filthy,
i did not stay and decided to drive back to Karratha a 6 hour drive than sleep in the room.
- Suliasi (10/5): -
- Connie (5/5): - Rooms need a lot of maintenance
- Leanne (4/5): - The room was very poor, stained carpets, not very clean benches or bathroom, crockery was dirty. Heat pump in room was very noisy but you needed it on. Meal was edible but flies were on the dessert. Would not recommend.
- Deon (7/5): -
- Alaya-Jay (6/5): - Had everything needed for a quick stopover to break up a long trip. Shower pressure and water temp was good. We were waiting a little while to check in, staff seemed a bit scarce. The room was a good size but very outdated and smelled musty like it hadn't been opened or used for a while.
The drive way is very dimly lit and low lighting around the rooms.
We were told they had buffet dinner serving from 6pm-8:30pm but we showed up at 7:15pm and again it took a long time for a staff member to attend reception, only to tell us they weren't adding any fresh food but we were welcome to have a look at what they had left and eat if we chose to.
There was coffee/tea options but a note that stated there was a $50 fee if you didn't wash/clean your dishes after as it wasn't included in the housekeeping. There was dishsoap/cloths to wash but in my opinion, dishes washed in the bathroom sink (as that would be the only option) isn't very hygienic. So we opted out of using any dishes.
The options for accommodation in Carnarvon were minimal but wouldn't choose to stay here again.
- Neil (1/5): I would not stay at this motel again. The only positive was the staff member who helped us check in. - The accommodation was old and not maintained. The couch was old and not fit for purpose. I wouldn't use the shower. the place needs a major renovation. The towels had holes in them.
- Anneliese (2/5): Sufficient for quick sleep before heading off on my travels - Location of the property was idea for travelling through town and staff very helpful when needed Rooms are extremely outdated. Bedding needs to be replaced, bedspread not sufficient for cold weather (more like a sheet) and the pillows were extremely thin. Smoke alarm was not compliant as it had a condom covering it. Pricing of these rooms should be half of what was charged
- Demps (8/5): - Excellent food. Room very tired. Needs heaps of love.
- Thomas (4/5): -
