Guest Reviews
- Kristin (8/5): - If you are looking for a regular hotel experience, this is not the right choice for you. But if you would like to experience something fun, interesting and authentic, you have found the right place. The location of this b&b is great; walking distance from the train station, to the beach and the big Buddha. Our host is very nice, fun and open-minded with excellent English. The breakfast is great and it was nice to eat together with the other guests around the one table in the kitchen. Our room was small for four people, but we managed to fit the four matresses. The shared bathroom is small and cramped, but worked very well. We will come back!
- Alexander (10/5): - Amazing stay! Very clean with nice location. Super friendly host who joined us for a wonderful breakfast that far exceeded our expectations. Would certainly stay here again
- Jennifer (10/5): - The staff were very nice. Bushi-san was busy on my day of arrival (they have a lot of activities in Kamakura), but they left me a welcome packet with all the information. I met Bushi-san the morning after for breakfast. I also got to meet Yoko-san. She was very kind.
The guesthouse is small, and the building is old and charming. I slept on a futon in a room equipped with tatamimats and traditional screen doors. It was amazing to sleep in a traditional room. The futon is perhaps on the thinner side, but they had more than one so you could perhaps stack them.
The guesthouse is kept clean (and has a lot of interesting stuff to look at!), but you can see that is has some wear and tear. If you're looking for a super shiny modern place to stay, this is not for you.
It's close to the Kamakura station and to the sea. Wadenya station is even closer than Kamakura station, and from there you can take a direct train to Enoshima.
- Yoshie (10/5): - The owner (bushi) of the guesthouse was such an amazing and kind person. He gave a tour around Kamakura and made delicious breakfast for me and my husband. I was a bit nervous since it was my first time staying at a guest house but it became a precious memory.
- Jaewon (10/5): - This is one of the best experiences I've ever had staying somewher, Our host Bushi was extremely friendly, and made our visit one to remember, we learnt alot about the area and about Kamukuras origin, I highly recommend adding the breakfast option to your stay as it was delicious, I'd give 6 stars if I could
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellente adresse !
- Marian O'Neill (10/5): - Bushi-san was the best host. He makes the whole experience and even speaks very good English. We experienced a tsunami warning and had to cancel our flight back home. Bushi allowed us to stay another night. He was very good with the kids. He made lots of jokes, let kids try out the samurai weapons and armor, and even made shaved ice with our kids. Bushi-san makes this B&B a lively and exciting experience. The property itself is outdated with lots of random knick knacks. The futons were a little too flat and uncomfortable —feels like camping. There is a shared bathroom with all the guests. However, the people we encountered were all lovely and we clicked with them. My children had fun interacting with another family with children. I wouldn’t trade my experience with a hotel experience, which tend to be cold and impersonal. I highly recommend Bushi-san’s property for a one-of-a-kind Japan experience.
- Edward (10/5): - Guesthouse Irodori was very interesting, and I'm happy me and my 88 year old, Japanese-born mother stayed here. At first thought, one would think it very strange that an Japanese/American Grandma and her 64 y.o. American daughter would stay at a "Minshuku" type of house. But, we had made last minute plans to travel to Tokyo for 1 month to visit a family member having surgery. We stayed two nights in Kamakura to look at real estate and visit a friend in the area. This was great for us and allowed us to do what we needed with a local place to sleep at night.
Our Samurai host, Bushi-san, and his small staff are kind and wonderfully warm people.
We loved meeting the much-younger travelers from the US and China and Spain and enjoyed sharing dinner with them for those two nights. Out of our month-long trip to Japan, we accomplished our mission during our 2 days in Kamakura and then moved on to stay with relatives around Tokyo and Odawara.
My only small/minor issue was the lighting in our room was not very bright, and our room was right next to the dining area where guests gathered to talk and enjoy themselves for a small party on our first night. That said, we were so tired that the noise ultimately didn't matter.
I recommend Guesthouse Irodori for anyone who is open to meeting other travelers from different parts of the world. The location is within walking distance of the train station, and one can also walk about 15-20 minutes through the residential area to see the beach.
- Hana (2/5): - I never stayed at this place. The host sent me an email asking me to cancel my booking as he booked to someone else.
- CHU (2/5): - Horrible. Would not recommend
- John (8/5): - Bashi was a wonderful host. Breakfast delicious. Ticked all my boxes.
- Allison (10/5): - Great stay, amazing friendly staff.
- Julianne (10/5): Great guesthouse - The guest host was friendly and easy to talk to! The breakfast was one of the best meals I had while traveling in Japan, and all the instructions were clear.
The guesthouse is well-maintained and the location is also convenient (not far from the train station). Each guest gets a separate bedroom, with everything you could ask for in it. The neighborhood is quaint, so you can relax easily. Thank you for everything :)
PS: my cousin had a laugh when I showed him the Petit Prince painting and complimented it!
- MARY (10/5): Great location - A great location to explore the local sights, the beach and within walking distance of the train station. This typical Japanese home was a delight and I had a great time here. The owners are wonderful. Thank you.
- Vimi Grace (10/5): - One thing I like most was the owner and staff warm hospitality, kindness and good English conversation . The breakfast served was Japanese food which was a healthy meal and the price of staying is affordable compared to other places. I highly recommend this place.
- madison (10/5): - Amazing guesthouse with amazing people! Thank you!
- renee (2/5): - Not as advertised. No locks on door, guy didn’t check our passports, flimsy windows and doors, noisy, beds hard and definitely not comfortable. It was awkward walking into a personal dinner party with our gear and he was not even aware we arriving
- Ella (10/5): Samurai Unterkunft - Supertoll.

- Nicole (10/5): - Bushi and the other hostesses were wonderful ! We loved the cultural experience !
- valinda (8/5): Bushi our amazing host - Love the Japanese guest house simplicity. Our host’s name is Bushi who wears a samurai outfit all day long. He offers tours of the city and also works with handicapped people. Amazing gentleman and a super host!
- Claire (10/5): - This is a really unique guesthouse. Very down to earth and rustic. The owner Bushi crafts the most delectable meals. Highly recommend
- Michael (10/5): Stay with a real samurai! - Bushi was amazing!! he was extremely welcoming, very friendly and cooked some amazing traditional breakfast each morning. As well, the atmosphere of the guest house was extremely relaxed and easy-going. He was conveniently located to shops, restaurants, tourist, attractions, and getting around is quite easy. If we ever come to Kamakura again staying at the guest house will be an obvious place to stay.
- Jose Ramon (10/5): Amazing and unique experience - I love staying in more traditional lodging when visiting Japan, and Irodori was what I was looking for. The host, Bushi, is a kind genuine person with a passion for his town and community and the sincerity and generosity of his character made my time in Kamakura much better, so thank you Bushi. The upstairs room was small and cozy, the space in the guesthouse can be narrow and cluttered, so if you are used to large hotels this is not it. I met very fun/kind travelers there, especially while enjoying breakfast with them in the morning. If you can, I absolutely recommend you staying here.
- Erik (10/5): - My biggest regret booking here is that I only booked one night! This place is wonderful in many many ways: It's located very close to Kamakura Station, easy to find, easily accessible, and affordable! The best thing about this place isn't what you'd find in a standard hotel: This feels like a home. The decor and architecture of the home have a wonderful charm and history to them, and they're all wonderfully maintained by the owners. Every other hotel I've stayed in feels cold and impersonal, but Guesthouse Irodori feels like someone cares and cherishes the space.
The owners are wonderful, too! I only briefly got to meet Bushi-san, but when we arrived he had just finished making mochi with some kids from the community. Megumi-san prepared an absolutely delicious breakfast that we got to enjoy over good conversation with other patrons. They took our bags in before check-in at no extra cost, and they were incredibly friendly in every interaction.
If I had to make any complaint, it's that the futons/pillows were a little thin. Even so, I'm sure if I had said anything, they would've made accomodations. There were lots of things in the house to accommodate folks with disabilities, which I really respect and appreciate.
If you're thinking about going to Kamakura, go! If you're going to Kamakura, stay here! Stay for more than one night! It's more than a place to sleep for a night, it's a lovely experience all together!
- Daphne (2/5): - (1) Location: great. 10 minutes walking to Kamakura station. Flat ground but some are cobbled.
(2) Quiet. In a quiet corner. I think this is the r best part
(3) Room specs: it wasn’t clear that this is a shared bathroom - I wouldn’t have booked it! And that is costs extra to leave luggage after you check out, even if you’re coming back the same day. I told them fine, I’ll come back by 10am (checkout time) and even then they want to charge! I had to argue with them. In the end good thing I finished sightseeing that day. Next day I left early for Tokyo
(4) Breakfast. They serve it from 9-930. It’s as if they’re don’t want you to avail of it. If you’re sightseeing, who eats at 9! X
(5) I ate lunch - curry had 2 pieces of minuscule paper thin pork lots of potatoes. Tea is tasteless.
(6) there is no lock in the room. I had to lock valuables in the suitcase. No peace of mind.
(7) public toilet in second floor stank of urine.
(8) public shower on the ground floor. Nowhere to put anything. Mind you - have to take your purse right? Because no lock in the room?
(9) Airconditioner / heater worked well. This is a plus.
Thank God I stayed only 1 night!
- ricky (10/5): - I’ve stayed in over a dozen hotels and such during this trip. Guest House Irodori Kamakura is by far the best and most comfortable place I have been. The staff, the owner Bushisan, and the neighbors are amazing and friendly people. I will genuinely miss being here. It felt like being at home.
- Makino (10/5): - Very Nice breakfast
- Julia (2/5): - Property was much smaller than pictured. The place was tiny, and cluttered. The check-in was until 9pm, but there was nobody at the property at 8pm when we arrive with the door unlocked. The room is not adequate for 4 adults. The bathroom was in poor condition. Pillows were paper thin. The room was a storage closet, where a large area was unable to be used due to storage. There was nowhere to put luggage when the beds were laid out. Hoarders paradise. Cost per night was outrageous. Could have had a private hotel for that price, but would have rather stayed in a 20 person dorm room. WOOD NOT RECOMEND TO ANYONE BUT AN ENEMY!!
- Lauren (10/5): - Bushi-san really makes this place extremely fun and special! It was a very unique experience to stay in a lovely traditional style home, with such a gracious and fun host. The traditional homemade Japanese breakfast was delicious. The other guests staying at the property were friendly and it was wonderful to spend a meal together. I wish we could have stayed another night! The property is close to Kamakura station and easily accessible to lots of shops and restaurants. Kamakura is such a lovely beach town. We will definitely be back!
- Brennan (10/5): Friendly atmosphere, good location - This was a fun place to stay. Had a good breakfast every morning and talked to other guests who were travelling from different countries. Bushi was an excellent host, very friendly and outgoing. The house was old and small but cozy and filled with all kinds of knick-knacks. It was a 5 minute walk to the beach and a 10 minute walk to the shopping center which had a lot of food stands. As a westerner, I found the futon mattresses were difficult to adjust to, especially since this was my first time staying in a japanese style room, but if that's something you're comfortable with, I definitely recommend staying a night or two here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Formidable !
- Nika (4/5): - Unique and the little ideas and cost is friendly for user. But sleep mat was very thin compared to normal. The old house charm was nice. I wish we could see staff as we left but there was no method to reach
- HAECHAN (8/5): - good
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Alan (10/5): - Bushi-san is an amazing host! The local fresh Japanese breakfast was wonderful. Can’t wait to stay again =)
- Yufang (10/5): - Breakfast is excellent
- Alfred pk (10/5): - The host is very friendly and communicate well with English is a big plus.
Also, this place provides an unique experience of Japanese living.
- Minh Tai (10/5): - The property have traditional outlook. It's perfect for anyone who want to experience the staying in Japanese style room. The only downside is since the building is old so you will need to watch out for the noise from other guests.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Warm hospitality.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice cozy little guesthouse tucked away on a quiet street.
Comfy beds and spacious rooms. Easy to use facilities.
Friendly staff who really care about the area, next chance ill have to do a bushin tour.
Close between main shopping district at the ststion, beach and temple district wjth Hasedera and Big Buddha
Thanks
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Pidin kaikesta. Todella hyvä ja ystävällistä palvelua. Mukava oli myös tutustua muihin majoittujiin. Kiitos!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good, friendly choice for travellers on a budget - Great budget spot from which to see a Kamakura. Tomoya, his girlfriend Nobia and the rest of the staff working in Irodori are incredibly friendly and helpful. Tomoya is very informative about Japanese history and culture, and even provides tours of the surrounding areas. His breakfasts were tasty and light - the perfect way to start a day or sightseeing. They also provided kimono dress up and calligraphy practice for free when I was there which wound up being great fun.
The guesthouse provides a very friendly environment and I was able to meet some fantastic people here - both staff and guests.
With regards to the rooms themselves, they are very basic and the walls are thin, so this wouldn’t be the ideal spot for a romantic getaway. All the surfaces are clean but there was a bit of clutter in my room. Also, there is only one shower for all five or so rooms...this wasn’t a problem when I was there but something to keep in mind. No locks on the bedroom doors either.
All in all, this is a basic but very friendly guesthouse which is perfect for the budget traveller looking to meet people. I would definitely recommend it!
- Yves (10/5): - Quaint certainly describes this guesthouse. However, the host, Tomoya-san, is outstandingly hospitable, knowledgeable about Kamakura and his command of the English language is remarkable, considering I was in Japan. After a little misadventure in another city, I was more than a little late checking-in but Tomoya-san was very accommodating, and even offered to keep my luggage the next day after check out so I could explore Kamakura, as I was only passing by for a day. The next day, he made a traditional breakfast for me to enjoy and told me about the history of Kamakura while helping me map out my day in order to make the most out of it. Thank you for making this part of my journey memorable, keep on embodying the Japanese samurai spirit!
- Scott (10/5): - This is a small B&B with a friendly and helpful owner. It was great to meet other guests and neighbors and discuss the history of the local area.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Anthony (6/5): - The operator is kindly and can speak English fluently. All guests have to share a both room, which is not good enough at high season.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great experience - Guesthouse japanese style with samurai owner. Cant give you a better feeling of japanese culture
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Lodging - Staff was very helpful and friendly, very courteous. Room was comfortable and in a convenient location for getting around on the bus routes.
- Andrew (10/5): Excellent stay - Guest house fantastic and staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone.
- Melody (8/5): Awesome host! - The hostel in itself was so-so but the host was so great! He was really welcoming, the breakfast was amazing and he was really accomodating. He was OK with changing our room as the original one was a bit small for 2 people... And it's only a 10mn walk to the beach! I would recommend it if you like guesthouses :)
