Guest Reviews
- Elaine (7/5): - It was in a good location That the car park wasn’t free when I booked on booking.com
The shower in the room needs updating in my opinion
- Paul (8/5): -
- Jacqueline (9/5): Nice place to stay. Comfy and cosy but a little dated. - Beautiful 4poster bed which was super comfy. Large room with fabulous views . So close to all things to see and do.
Very large car park which is free if you book directly with them. £8 charge for parking as we booked via booking.com.
- Michael (8/5): Enjoyable 2 day stay… would use again. - Location was excellent and close to all the attractions we needed to visit Nothing to dislike
- Philip (3/5): Very disappointed, absolutely not value for money. - Location was good Very dated. Poor hygiene standards, tired decor. Booking.com customers are penalised by charging £8 for parking. The hotel says booking direct gives free parking. Rooms are small, TV works but signal not strong enough to be able to watch.
- Tracey (7/5): - Lovely staff great location
- Anastasiia (10/5): - The hotel was clean, but we were not very satisfied with the value for money. For a price of around £125 per night, we expected a bit more.
We did not like that even hotel guests staying overnight have to pay an additional £8 per day for parking, especially considering that this is not only a hotel, but also a bar and restaurant with many visitors coming in.
We looked at two rooms: one had an unpleasant smell, and the other one was quite cold. Fortunately, there was a heater in the room which worked well and made the temperature much more comfortable. It also feels like the interior and furniture are quite old.
- Andrew (5/5): Nice area, the hotel is dated and needs redecorating - Location Dated
- Jeannie (8/5): All in all fantastic - Location Paying for parking, but I get it!
- Joan (9/5): An excellent stay - The room was very comfortable and warm. The view from our room was excellent. Very near the town.
.We e also close to all the main attractions The breakfast was OK but very basic.
- Tim (9/5): Did what it said on the right tin - Fridley Clean location As above
- ATHITH (7/5): -
- Olvia (2/5): - Property location is good It was absolutely filthy.
Rooms full of dust and cobwebs. The bathroom was disgusting.
- joanne (3/5): - Staff were very friendly and in a great location Rooms were not very clean, crumbs on floor, stains on bedsheets. Bath had marks in of where bleach poured but looks like never wiped. Hairs on side of bath.
- Annie (3/5): Upsetting and bad for a romantic weekend get away! Should’ve spent more money for a nicer hotel! - Great location
Nice outdoor beer garden on the river
Nice view of river from room
Clean towels Blaring music till 11pm on Friday night and 11:30pm Saturday night.
Sunken mattress so we both kept rolling into the middle
WiFi doesn’t work most of the time
No fitted sheets for the bed but the problem was housekeeping doesn’t know how to fold these properly so kept coming off in the night
Shower was broken so could only dribble out meaning we couldn’t wash our hair
- Yuan (7/5): -
- ALASDAIR (7/5): brief but comfortable and in a great location - lovely setting with views of the river and surrounding hills from both bedrooms and all reception rooms .We didn't have time to explore the town or use the river side terrace but its well situated .The reception rooms were spacious and reflected the age of the historic building .The staff were friendly and helpful and we enjoyed the live band that were playing in the bar next door to the restaurant after our dinner ! The wine list at dinner could have been better but we found something suitable and prices ok .Dinner menu was ok as was the food but not a fine dining kind of place .It wasn't bad value however in these current times and I felt we got what we paid for .Didn't appreciate being charged extra for parking when a resident .
- Kate (6/5): Great location, nice staff but accommodation left a lot to be desired. - The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The location was great and the river side bar. For the price we have expected a better quality of room, bed and bathroom. The room was small, cramped with a broken blind. The door lock was also broken so I was glad I was not on my own.
It was also very noisy, staff banging around and singing below us from about 7am.
- Ian (10/5): -
- Jacqueline (1/5): - Charged for breakfast and was told i had booked room only which i never book Extra charges
- Ann (10/5): -
- Michael (9/5): - The Hand is in a great location, central to everything you’ll need.
- james (1/5): Don’t book this hotel - Nothing All very dated
Small room
Awful bathroom
Wc didn’t refill
Shower was a trickle
- Barbara (9/5): Great night lovely stay - Close to centre live band on sat night Liked all
- Manannan (7/5): - Location. Old fashioned hotel, with a very hard bed!
Breakfast was tasteless!
- Adele (7/5): -
- Geoff (8/5): Good value for the location - Location is amazing Not much seating in the bar
- katie Jane (8/5): -
- Gary (10/5): - Loved our room overlooking the river. Very comfortable. Great breakfast. Will definitely be back. Nothing
- R (10/5): - We had an elderly small dog with us and when we checked in we were allocated a top floor room but the lady on reception changed it for us to a first floor room straight away with no fuss. Really excellent hotel, fantastic staff and great food, great location as well
- Debbie (10/5): Fabulous staff fabulous location - Fabulous location helpful friendly accommodating staff Nothing
- David (7/5): Very enjoyable stay. Staff were very helpful. Good breakfast served. - Breakfast was good. Location was good. Shame we had to pay for parking as were guests. Parking charges.
Hotel ran out of beer on tap. Disappointed with what l had to drink.
- Ken (10/5): -
- Jackie (7/5): - The location is excellent outside terrace great with excellent views Place is abit tired consider blackout blinds and shower wasnt the greatest, all things considered we would still return
- Carol (8/5): Weekend break - Great location. Friendly, helpful staff. Large, spacious room. Hotel is a little tired. Uncomfortable bed.
- David Railston (5/5): - Staff friendly and location good 👍 Bed mattress in my single room needs replacing as big dip in the middle
- Robert (4/5): -
- Collin (7/5): -
- Outhwaite (6/5): - Position, beer garden, area. Breakfast, the hot breakfast was lovely, the continental breakfast was terrible. We came at 8am and there were no pastries, no croissants no fruit with juice. I could not have an orange juice as there weren't any glasses. I fortunately got the last coffee cup so had a coffee. Very poor.
- Val (8/5): - Lovely place near river and all amenities Paying for car park very unexpected
- Jo (6/5): Great location needing some TLC - Great location and views Disfunctional plumbing, chaotic breakfast, disinterested staff
- Mike (2/5): Very poor and payed very good money - I've been visiting this hotel for over 20 years because of the location, however it's a old building with no investment. I will not he returning.
There was nothing I liked. My first room had a massive Crack in the wall, it took ages to adjust the shower then while showering the water actually stopped. The mattress looked ok but I woke up and found myself in a massive dip in the middle. The next day I did complain and was moved to a very small room , the bed was better but the toilet was very unstable.
- Terry (9/5): Our short stay was excellent as the weather was fabulous which made our stay more pleasant - we did not have breakfast as we only booked room only. The room itself was a family room overlooking the river dee and the location was slap bang in the centre of Llangollen. the only thing we did not particularly like was that above the bathroom was a nest of pigeons which made a terrible noise when you went into the bathroom.
- Simon (9/5): Ok - Clean The clientele in the bar and beer garden were a bit rough
- Feona (7/5): -
- Lynda (3/5): The bathroom was dirty and it stank of nicotine - The location It was dirty and there were obvious signs of smoking
- Carol (8/5): Great old fashioned pub in great location - Old style pub/hotel in a great road that is quiet and with outside seating overlooking the river. Stayed in large family room. Nice a clean. Had evening snacks and breakfast and both nice meals. Shower was slightly weak
- Trevor (6/5): This would be a great hotel with the right management and some customer service training. Hopefully I visited on an off - It terms of the town great location. Good car park little over priced but kike many hotels they outsource the parking.
Room was dated but clean and comfy. With plenty of tea & coffee Staff could do with customer service training. When I checked in the receptionist just looked like she did not want to be there. Very poor engagement. On leaving she was more interested in talking to her friend than asking if I had enjoyed my stay.
When I went to the bar for an evening meal I got the impression if I ordered then it would be an inconvenience. So we went out in town a d had a lovely meal where our costom was welcomed
Breakfast the food was very nicely prepared. Staff where none engaging and again I got the impression they did not want to be there.
So it was quick as I felt I was in the way
- Norah (9/5): - Room had everything you would need and location was great walking distance to everything I didnt like the fact i had to pay £16 to park over night because i booked it through booking.com, but if i done it direct with hotel it was free
- DAVIDE (2/5): - Good Location Facilities poor, for example the shower tray was overflowing the shower taps very flimsy
- Ray (9/5): Very good ! - Good location, staff very helpful, breakfast good ! Plenty of parking spaces ! My bed was not very comfortable ! (Room No 2)
- Anna (10/5): BRILLIANT !!! - Myself and 3 friends had 2 twin rooms. Everything was lovely. Only criticism would be that there were a lot of stairs.....we should have asked for rooms on a lower floor
- Ray (9/5): - Central location! None!
- Michele (1/5): -
- Victoria (4/5): Terrible place to stay - Breakfast was adequate. Bed needed replacing
Room was poor with old furnishings and not clean
Bathroom was terrible with an unacceptable shower
Whole place needs a refurb and managing
- MARGARET (8/5): Characterful hotel helpful staff good breakfast counteracted by need to refurb - Breakfast was very good - hot breakfast was plentiful with a good variety of meats on offer including different egg options among the additions of beans hash browns and mushrooms, toast and preserves juice and tea £ coffee ‘on tap’. Service excellent.
Reception & Bar staff helpful. Reception sorted the car park payment at the desk as option to pay by scanner didn’t work on my phone. They had assisted where they could to give me a room on the lowest floor with bedroom which was the first floor. Bed clean and comfy. Space a small room but had got a double bed which in itself was nice but it was squeezed against the window so had to crawl over on top of the bed to open & close the curtains - not easy as a petite 68 year old with back issues. Someone else had obviously had difficulty previously as the privacy net curtain had been pulled partly off its track. The bed side lighting was actually over head the bed which was too bright as you have to look up directly at it in pressing the switch - quite in your eyes - perhaps a lower wattage bulb woukd resolve ?
Not much room for the baggage holder when opened out which meant being extra aware not to trip over its legs. The door locking mechanism was old fashioned & tricky, as friends in other rooms also found. Bathroom fitments jaded needing refurbishment.
There is no lift so arriving at top of stair there is no landing so the fire door opened onto the stairwell itself being awkward to hold the door open and twist to step through carrying a case. A fall risk I think.
Not happy about paying £8 a night for parking which I wasn’t aware of when booking through Booking.com - if that is in there not obvious enough.
- Rosemary (7/5): Great location - Great location with lots of parking space , good choice for breakfast. Wasn’t aware parking was chargeable when not booked directly! Rooms need a makeover,
- Sam (8/5): - Beautiful view of the river from the room. Great central location in town. Friendly welcome at reception. Cost of parking outside the hotel is a bit steep. Room slightly cramped but again comfortable enough for our single night stay.
- M (9/5): A good location for railway overall stay quite satisfying - Breakfast buffet style OK Tv stopped working in room 1 moved to room 21 next day unfortunately tv reception kept breaking up on that tv
- Tom (6/5): -
- Deborah (8/5): - Food was lovely
Room was clean and comfortable
The band Saturday night was amazing
The staff were very friendly and professional The price
- Thomas (8/5): -
- Carina (9/5): Good - Nice big room for 3 people sharing, comfortable beds, great location The rooms could be warmer, stayed in February
- Ryan (1/5): - Nice members of staff Absolutely awful room. Smell of stale cigarettes and constant noise. There was a dripping pipe behind the bathroom wall that kept us up as well as other noises
- Jill (6/5): Good budget stay - Lovely location with rooms looking over the river. Historic hotel. Clean with ample tea and coffee supplies in the room. Lovely thick black out curtains and although the bed was firm, I slept well. Woke to the sound of the River Dee rushing past, and apart from that, just silence, so it was very peaceful. Biggest issue was the shower. It was either scalding hot or freezing cold.
- anthony (3/5): -
- Megcherry (6/5): - The location was why we chose the hotel, it was a pet friendly hotel but nothing in the hotel for pets, like water bowls, and we were put in an attic room which was very tired looking and was up and down the stairs everything bear needed to go pee. Attic room with a pet.
Tired looking room
Shower is faulty ,no water pressure
Cracked sink
Loose toilet seat
- Sandra (7/5): - Friendly staff
Comfortable bed
Good breakfast Bathroom could do with updating
- Melvyn (3/5): Have stayed here last and couldn’t fault the accommodation or staff. Booked again this year and all was sub standard. Pa - Location Room was terrible, radiator had gaffer tape holding electrical components together 🙈
- Laura (3/5): Cheap and loud. Get what you pay for i suppose - It was a literal 2 minute drive to where we needed to be the following day for a wedding Curtains didnt close at the side so beaming sunshine came through at 6am right where the pillows were. Our room (17) was directly above the bars doors and it was 0 on the sound proof scale so we heard every person come and go. Pillows were paper thin.
- Andrew (8/5): - Location was brilliant, right in the heart of Llangollen.
Room was comfy with plenty of room, good shower.
I think breakfast is a bit expensive, but was plentifull. Carpark fee is expensive seeing as though you are staying at the hotel.
- Muhammad Umar (7/5): Best city, good hotel which is okay to stay - 1. Location was the best part with great view
2. Staff was amazing 1. No bedside switches to plug in chargers
2. Very difficult to settle shower temperature, same old style taps are in use whoch are difficult to tackle when setting temperature
3. Corridor had strange smell
- Kelley (6/5): Ok but wouldnt return - The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming.
The room was clean and had everything we needed.
The breakfast was lovely and plenty of it.
The location was fantastic. The bed was the worst ive slept in. My partner and I had the worst night's sleep weve ever had in a hotel. It was hard and lumpy.
The hotel would benefit from having someone on reception during the day time or at least a bell, as when we booked in, then needed to book a table for the restaurant we had to wait until someone noticed we was there.
- Rachel (7/5): Lovely evening spent in an idyllic location - Beautiful old hotel, with lovely quirky rooms The shower cubicle still had hairs from previous occupancy and the shower itself didn’t works very well…was either scolding hot or freezing cold
- Margaret/Mindy (8/5): Lovely hotel with history. - The locality was really good, on the river & Central to Llangollen. The building was lovely. The room was a bit small & there wasn't always staff at reception.
- Anthony (1/5): - Paying for parking on site.
- Anthony (8/5): Excellent location and nice hotel. Would stay again! - Room was large and functional. As a couple we were given a family room with 2 singles and 1 double. View was inwards towards the courtyard. Bathroom was good with shower and bath. Plenty of toiletries were supplied.
Breakfast was good with plenty of choice.
Location was excellent and only a short walk to everything that Llangollen has to offer. Staffing was often sparse and the same person was often doing both reception and the bar. Service at the bar was quite often slow and you could find yourself the only person at the bar but still wating 7 or 8 minutes to actually be served.
- Michelle (8/5): Nice hotel with everything you need - The location was really great, so close to everything. It is a spacious hotel with a bar that does food and you can take your drinks and food out to the seating area which has a good view of the river.
Our family room was the most spacious I’ve stayed in. It had a double bed with two single beds for our kids, which was great. The room and bathroom were very clean.
It had a Fire Tv which was handy because we were able to sign into Netflix etc.
The breakfast was really good, buffet style in a very spacious room.
The parking is right behind the hotel so it was easy access to our car when we needed it.
The staff were friendly and helpful. We had to pay £8 per day for parking, because it wasn’t included through booking.com. We only stayed one night so it wasn’t a problem. There’s no parking out on the streets either. None of this was an issue for us but thought it could help others booking here.
The decor in the room was a bit old fashioned and it only had 2 places to plug things in for charging devices. 1 single socket and one double and they aren’t near the beds. It might be worth while taking an extension cord with you.
These things were very trivial considering all the good points about this hotel.
- Mark (4/5): - Great location I've been a dozen times before, never paid for parking. This time it was £8 a day. Shower was a tickle. Room small. Some staff not friendly.
- danielle (8/5): -
- Terence (4/5): - Location is fantastic and central to Llangollen easy to access everything around Staff could be more inviting, hospitalitable and welcoming.
The bed was solid, not comfortable and the lack of information was very poor, ie a live band playing late and the hidden parking charge
- Ken (9/5): We enjoyed our stay, and are planning a return, preferably when all the visitor attractions are open - Central location in town was extremely good, view from our room (river) was stunning. Evening meal was very good, and reasonable, breakfast was exceptional. Staff were helpful and efficient, one in particular (usually on breakfast, sorry can't remember her name) went above and beyond. We will most likely be coming back. I was disappointed to find there was no lift, but after finding my way around the building I can see that this is probably not possible.
- Patrick (9/5): -
- Rick (8/5): We loved it, quirks and all .. great history, unsurpassed location, great value and attentive staff. Definitely be back! - Great, stunning and very convenient location. Very helpful, non-intrusive staff. A great hotel, with a history which could have been made more of, showing signs of wear and tear … some infrastructure investment would pay dividends. Bed was unbelievably noisy every time I moved! Similarly, the bathroom had absolutely no floor space to stand … without a creak! Must have been h*ll for those in room below.
- John (6/5): - Hotel rather tired. Room very small but clean. Breakfast very good.
- Tom (9/5): Outstanding stay - The Dee penthouse was absolutely beautiful Didn’t know the spa treatments we had had to be pre booked so missed out on them
- Karen (7/5): - Great location, disappointing to now have to pay for parking despite staying at the hotel It’s old but functional
- Grimshaw (7/5): - Price of the carpark
- Michelle (10/5): -
- Jenny (4/5): Dissatisfied and disappointed - The hotel was very tired . Picture’s on the website very deceiving
The room , especially the bathroom, had a sewerage smell.
The food wasnt good and the breakfast wasn’t much better .. Liver and Onions was full of fatty lumps . The hotel was old and tired .
We thought car parking was included but the hotel said only if you book direct not on booking.com
- Mark (9/5): -
- phill (10/5): Oka - Oka Oka
- Arthur (8/5): - Convenient location, walking distance to the centre.. comfortable but a little dated Parking is a problem for most people... but luckily I have a blue badge and there was 1 space on the hotel frontage that fee's didn't apply
- Sully (5/5): -
- Melissa (10/5): Amazing hotel - Super comfy rooms.
Very clean
Food was amazing
Great breakfast
Great location and views.
Staff and owners where amazing. Having to come home.
- Kim (5/5): - Breakfast was nice The shower did not work at all very expensive for the room itself
- Karen (8/5): Ok for what we needed - The location was perfect for what we needed The hotel and the rooms are quite dated. Strong smell of wood fire which wasn't offensive but a bit overwhelming. Luckily we had a room at the top of the stairs and at the other end of the hotel from where the bar was as there was a live band on until early hours of the morning which wasn't ideal. Our room did overlook the smoking area which was noisy.
