Guest Reviews
- Martha (8/5): Pleasant - Beautiful property Few breakfast choices. Required to wash & put away our own dishes.
- Norman (8/5): The owners were very helpful and friendly and we would certainly stay there again. - A beautiful location in the hills with a great view. This is a peaceful oasis and we felt as if we were living in the trees. Difficult driving at night as property located on a very winding road.
- Daniel (8/5): - The room and bathroom were really clean! The property was absolutely beautiful with all of its mature growth and I found the vibe to be very spiritual which I love. This place doeshave a hot tub, but i never had time to use it, but the ambiance around it was very pretty! The bird sounds on the property was authentically like being in a jungle. The only thing that could have been alot better was the bed and the pillows. The owner was very nice and greeted us right when we arrived.
- Daylan (10/5): - An unexpectedly beautiful reception, free snacks and goodies. And a wonderful family received us with warm welcomings.
- IRMA DOCTOR (10/5): - Nice place and can listen to sounds of nature specially when raining. Love it.
- DOMINIC (10/5): - My stay was exceptional! Quite and peaceful, with tranquil views of the forest and ocean!
- Richard (10/5): A long stop over, and an amazing stay. - Amazing building in the hills of Kona. If you do not mind being a bit out of the town for the joys of nature, this is a perfect place. Maybe a 10 minute drive to downtown restaurants, etc. if you love frogs croaking and chirping it is great. Gardens, beautiful flowers are a treat.
- Mercedes (10/5): -
- 556chrissef (4/5): Felt like a religious retreat - We stayed here for five nights. The house and grounds are nice, could use some updating and maintenance. We had access to the kitchen and morning coffee. We were taken aback by the all the bibles, offers for prayer, religious information and flyers. It felt a little like a Christian retreat, which would be fine if it were advertised as such, and it was slightly offensive. It wouldn’t be welcoming to people who are of different faiths. I don’t want to be bombarded by religious or political information when I’m on vacation. I wouldn’t stay here again.
- Ernestine (10/5): - It was amazing to find the place and then we found it and it was in the jungle plants everywhere. It was absolutely beautiful and it was like a bed-and-breakfast so it was pretty nice. Coffee was good. Food was good and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.
- Jim (10/5): - "A stunning and unique property, tucked away in a breathtaking forest. The hosts were exceptional, and the coffee and breakfast treats were delightful. The hot tub provided the perfect relaxation after a full day of snorkeling."
- Mary (10/5): - A little slice of paradise in the hills above Kona. Very clean and a great location. Dave and Miriam are very hospitable and helpful.
- Grace (6/5): - The B&B isn’t as excellent as I thought or read about. Maybe my expectation was too high, as I read rave reviews about it and then booked it. Hosts David and Miriam are friendly and helpful. Compared with another B&B we stayed during this trip, this one feels older, smaller and less privacy. The location is good, around 12 minutes’ drive from Kona downtown. Parking is free. Yards and gardens are well-kept and relaxing. We didn’t use the hot tub. Overall, I think the property could use some remodeling.
- Katie (10/5): - What a charming place to stay. Our hosts were so thoughtful. It was close to everything and provided us a feeling like we were in the country in the hills. It was perfect!
- Sylvia (10/5): - Miriam and Dave are sweethearts, would stay again in a heartbeat
- Alyson (10/5): - Very warm and inviting. Beautiful and quiet space.
- Medardo (10/5): - Had a great time. Really relaxing peaceful atmosphere. A host for very friendly
- Donald (10/5): - This place is a gem. It’s not too far from Kona Airport. We stayed in the Japanese tea room which is a very unique stay. It’s a very comfortable spacious room that has a very comfortable queen bed, nice t.v. With Amazon Prime, YouTube and other options for viewing entertainment, a BIG bathtub and a separate shower in the beautiful bathroom. The awesome part of this place though is Dave and his wife Miriam! They let you use basically all the amenities their property has to offer from the nice kitchen which has pretty much all ya need to cook your own meals (you’ll need to clean up after yourself), a jacuzzi, and in their common area Dave always has coffee ready in the morning you just hit the brew button and multiple teas are available as well. Miriam every morning sets out some baked good and fresh tea in the morning as well to get ya going. If you stay at this property you will go away feeling like you lived in Hawaii for your stay and not visiting like you feel in a normal hotel room. Very Wonderful Experience! Thank you Dave and Miriam.
- Dana (10/5): - Owners are lovely. Very authentic homey experience. Would stay again!
- David (10/5): - A true treasure in the hills of Kona. An old style inn tucked away in wooded neighborhoods. Old but well renovated interiors and a wonderful lanai to sit watch the birds at the feeder and drink wonderful coffee. Just a short drive into town and the beaches but in the quiet hills.
- Laura (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay here. From breakfast on the lanai to nights in the hot tub, this place has everything needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.
- America (2/5): - This property is not a hotel you have no privacy you don’t have your own restroom you share the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, the restrooms with other people this place it’s very high on mole I’m allergic to Mole they are not reasonable conscience for the people that stay and don’t stay there they don’t respect your health wise Had trouble breathing because of the more conditions that they have it’s a home it’s not a hotel
- Cassie (8/5): - This property has absolutely stunning grounds. Full of gorgeous plants and colorful birds. The only complaint I could possibly have is that it’s a bit warm. We had the cheapest room and it did not come with an air conditioner. (So maybe the other rooms do have A/C) It does cool down a bit at night (you’ll have to keep the windows open and the ceiling fan running) but the humidity and the swampiness just can’t be fixed without an A/C. Again though, this property was a great stay, fresh baked goods and fresh fruit in the lobby in the morning. Dave and Miriam are very sweet people and most importantly, we felt very, very safe here.
- Debra (10/5): - Wonderful B&B with great hosts! The Japanese teahouse room was lovely, the grounds were beautiful, & there was delicious Kona coffee available every morning, teas, & homemade goodies. If I'm ever in Kona again, would definitely stay there again!
- Ethan Daniel (10/5): - So much natural beauty. The lack of a/c is an adjustment, but it never gets too hot here. Very nice owners and free local tea and coffee in the morning.
- William (10/5): - This is an oasis of tranquility in a sea of chaos - the parable of a ship finding shelter from a storm comes to mind. Great morning coffee and a cozy place to drink it. The Inn is centrally located, only a short drive to many landmarks and other points of interest. The hosts could not be more welcoming.
- Haoran (10/5): - Very friendly and nice couple! Safe and quiet accommodation!
- Ronald (10/5): - The hosts, David and Miriam were great. We felt welcome and at home. Charming property, very homey and beautiful surroundings. We would be delighted to stay there again when we are in Kona. Aloha and mahalo
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gary (8/5): - Felt more like a bnb. If you don't like noise, don't get a room in the main building. Super nice folks. Great hottub.
- Helena (8/5): Lots of Bibles, Christian Music, and Bible Quotes - The room was nice, and the bed was very comfortable. The parking is tight if you are driving a truck. There are bibles on all of the dining tables and in the rooms, there are non-Gospel bible quotes on the walls in the common areas, and there is Christian music playing in the common room at all times. You are expected to clean and put up all of your dishes, and you will have to make your own coffee before 7:30 am. The elevation is about 1,200 feet if you are planning on scuba diving.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - This is a very special place. It feels like you are a part of the island in a way no commercial hotel could make you feel. Dave and Miriam are the best! They take good care of their guests and run a very nice country inn. If you are looking to stay in Kona , this is the BEST place to stay!!
- Alan C (10/5): - In hindsight God obviously sent me to this enchanting place. It is run by Christians and is a wonderful location to meet the newest members of your Oikos. God is truly present on this property.
- Hélène (6/5): - Nice property, beautiful setting, friendly owners, but over-priced for what it offers.
- Steven (10/5): - Excellent
- Heather (10/5): Nice Vibe great location! - Unique property for an excellent price!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Hard bed, nice place - The bed was so hard, it got harder and harder to get up each day. Otherwise Dave was very friendly and there were a lot of nice amenities to this place.
- Jill (10/5): Wonderful atmosphere - Loved our stay. Very quiet and peaceful. The frogs at night were an added bonus, like a sleep machine, but better. Coffee was great. The kitchen was amazing and very clean. It was a balm to the soul, and the Christian undertones was a welcome bonus.
- Keith D. (8/5): - A very family home feel. No ac though.
- Gilles (10/5): - It was a quiet area, the owners are personable and takes care of issues asap and helpful. Beautiful setting outside and clean.
- Eric (10/5): - Stunning location and facility - super friendly proprietors. Only complaint? Abundant bibles, scripture verses and christian Muzak throughout could be unpleasant for the majority of travelers that do not like being preached to while on holiday.
- randy (10/5): - My wife and I liked the feel of being in nature. Loved the sounds at night with the chirping Couqui frogs. Hot tub was great. Hosts were very nice and were genuine. Mature trees and flowers along with the raised levels made it interesting. I would recommend to any of my friends. Clean and cozy made it feel like home.
- Kathy (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely, quiet accommodation nestled in a beautiful location in the hills (but only a short drive) from the main centre of Kailua Kona. The hosts were so lovely and very accommodating. If I get an opportunity to return to Kona, I will certainly stay here again. Nothing
- Alex (10/5): AMAZING! - Coolest spot to stay on the big island. Room was clean, views were beautiful..like staying in the jungle! There is even a hot tub. Close to everything so it’s easy to come back for a midday lunch break if you need. Would definitely stay here again if we are back to the island.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful Country Inn. It’s a great vacation place to be. Dave and Miriam are so friendly and hospitable and they gave a lot good tips on traveling around the Island.
- Jacob (10/5): - Such a beautiful, cozy, small spot hidden in the foothills of the Kona side of the big island. The owners are an absolute treat, the property is paradise, and the location is unbeatable. Minutes from anything you could want or need on that side of the island and within 2 hours of the Hilo side of the island. Highly recommend trying this place out. The “Maile” room was perfect for me and my wife on our fiancée! Very homey and comfy for our needs.
- Tresa Lagay (10/5): - Rustic-chic. Every detail showed deliberate excellence. Christian hospitality. Really good recommendations on places to go. Lovely setting.
- Andy (5/5): Passable -
- Rios (10/5): Exceptional -
- Audmo (8/5): Comfy quiet place to stay while adventuring on the Big Island - Quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of Kailua Kona. It was like staying in a treehouse. Location not a problem with a rental car, and there is ample parking. If you are looking for a hip or instagram influencer type of place, this isn't it, but I found the accommodations clean and comfortable.
- Burns (10/5): Exceptional - My hosts were sweet and friendly and provided the most delicious teas make from ingredients in their garden Nothing
- Sara Lynn (10/5): - The property was beautiful, and the room was comfortable. I liked the personal service we received. The only downside was the chickens who woke us up before sunrise, but the website did warn of that, so we were prepared.
- LeiLei (4/5): - Despite being in a convenient location, I wouldn't recommend this place. There are dogs that howl and bark at night and early morning nearby and roosters that will wake you up before sunrise. The windows do not close fully. There are ear plugs near the bedside, but these do little to help.
The hot water is also very inconsistent. The first night the water was lukewarm at best. We stayed 4 nights and had varying levels of hot water.
This property is more like an Airbnb. I was charged a 'cleaning fee' without any notification. I needed to reach out to the host to figure out what the new fee was. No receipt, notice, or invoice shared with me.
- Mark (8/5): Pretty Japanese style house 15 minutes from Kailua Kona - The room and bathroom were very nice and there was a very good common kitchen and lanai. it is in a lovely suburban neighborhood which was only about one mile off of the main road. Our room was along a road that was noisy especially because the room didn’t have glass windows. Part of the noise problem was due to many neighborhood dogs who were barking every night.
- Peter (10/5): - The property looks exactly - if not better - than in the photos. Usually, we are looking for oceanside apartments, but this was a much better option. Especially, on the Big Island. It is still close to the beaches and downtown Kona, but the place is magical - lush vegetation, wooden cabins, great view. Your spouse or family will thank you for picking this place. Mine did.
- Thomas (10/5): A dream come true - The location if you want to be near the pier is excellent. The family running it was very kind and helping. I will re visit
- Simon (10/5): Perfect location for a perfect vacation. - A lovely traditional Hawaiian house in the hills above Kona. Inside was spacious and very comfortable. It had all the facilities we needed inside, including fridge, microwave and mini oven. We also had access to a shared kitchen with more facilities like a cooker. The hoss were wonderful and made us feel very welcome. Every morning there was a fresh pot of coffee ready to start the day. The property takes about 7 minutes to Walmart, 10 minutes to Kona and has numerous beaches within 30 minutes that were stunning. The property had good parking that linked to a main transit route. We would stay here again no problem. The property was perfect.
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional -
- T4702FRtimc (10/5): An Experience of Home - My trip was half business and half vacation. During the business portion, I stayed in the fancy resort, and for my own vacation, I stayed at this inn. Surprisingly, the experience I got from the inn was not a single bit less than what I had in the resort.
The room was very clean, all the towels, bedding, surfaces, and ground were all matching to the resort level. Amenities were functioning well, and the hosts were very friendly and approachable. They helped us in many aspects of things.
Interestingly, the inn is located in the mountain; a 5 to 10 minute drive will bring you to the downtown Kona where you will find some amazing food and stores, and a 5 to 10 min walk in the morning will bring you astonishing views. I have to say that that was the most amazing part of the whole trip. I can still remember how blue the ocean and how clear the sky. Being close to nature means there are some geckos and birds in the yard, as long as you pay attention, there are beautiful surprise everywhere.
The thing that made this whole stay outstanding was the like-home experience. As someone who has been away from home for years due to various reasons. The host and their family really made my stay memorable and joyful. I will definitely stay here if I visit Kona again, very pleasant and wonderful experience.
- BillF8430 (2/5): Very disappointing - My wife and I spent seven nights at the Hale Maluhia County Inn recently. I t missed the mark in so many ways. When we booked the room six months ago, they were advertising themselves as a BNB. There were numerous pictures on the website showing wonderful breakfast foods. I was looking forward to our stay there, getting up in the morning, having a sumptuous breakfast, leisurely hanging out in the morning reading, before going sightseeing in the afternoon. Upon our arrival we were informed that they weren’t doing breakfast anymore. (They took our money when we booked for a BNB experience, but made no offer of a partial refund since they were no longer providing something we had paid for). So instead, we had to go into town each day for breakfast. Maybe they should advertise as a BNBYOBreakfast.
They advertised that our room had a Cable TV. Since we were there the last week of the Olympics, we were looking forward to enjoying watching that in the evenings. Surprise, surprise; there were no network channels, movie channels, or sports channels; only what came free with Roku; this is not Cable TV. Another disappointment.
They also advertise a “Pleasant Guest Common Area”, which the family also seems to use; including an adult daughter having her afternoon nap on the sofa in the “Pleasant Guest Common Area” as well as a Bible study group one morning.
There were fees and threat of fees. After paying more that $300 a night, to be charged an additional $50 cleaning fee; I guess we should feel lucky that we didn’t have to clean the room ourselves as well as do laundry.
Guests had the use of a kitchen, which apparently the family also uses, because the refrigerator was mostly full with the family’s food
One afternoon as we were getting cleaned up and getting ready to go into town, the power went out. We were able to finish getting ready and when I left our room, I could not find a responsible person at the Inn. I finally called Dave, our host, to report that the power was out. He said yes, he had been informed that it was out and that it should be back on around 6:30pm. Don’t you think that it would have been nice to have let us know that without us having to track him down?
As other reviewers having mentioned it, there is plethora of Bibles, religious Christian books, verses on the walls, and offers to pray for you. Even as a Christian, I don’t need this. For others who are not Evangelical Christians, it is at best unwelcoming and offensive. So, if you are an Evangelical Christian with money to squander, this might be the place for you; for others, it may be some place to avoid.
- KATHLEEN (8/5): Feb. 2022 - A really great place to stay away from the crowds. But it’s also away from the beaches. No longer a B and B, so the breakfasts are minimal. Hosts are attentive and welcoming.
- 888georgiac (8/5): Beautiful Place to Wind Down before coming home to Reality - We rented a car at the airport and was able to locate the Inn in the Dark with the help of Siri, but initially were shocked that our room was up a flight of outside stairs. We are all seniors. My husband was able to carry 3 sets of luggage up. Turns out since there were 3 of us sharing a room, this is what was available. The owners are just lovely, Miriam and David. They have 7 children -- 3 now living in Texas. We were greeted by Miriam, and she showed us the shared kitchen, living room and outside Lanai, all spacious areas. Since we had just finished a cruise, 4 days in Waikiki, and 4 days in Maui, this was to be our 4 days to wind down on the big island and return to reality, cold Pennsylvania. We had forgotten it was still winter here since our weather during this trip was absolutely gorgeous. This Inn is right off the Queen's highway... one left turn up the hill, then one right turn at the stop sign to our road. Entrance is at a sharp turn that continues up the hill. You do need a car, but parking here is not an issue. The driveway is a little sloped, so pull all the way up to unload luggage, then park back down the driveway. Because of the slight elevation, it is cooler than at the ocean (less than 2 miles away), amazing. Day one we drove the north route around the Island to Hilo, stopping several times for sightseeing (Akaka Falls was my favorite - $5.00 per person). Even stopped at a local Flea/Farmers Market and had breakfast and conversation with locals. They started this co-op market on Sundays to get locals out socializing with each other during covid. Such nice, organic people, distancing in the outdoors. We stopped at Safeway Foods (Queens Highway and Henry Ave) for dinner (from their prepared foods area of store) and returned to the Lanai to enjoy our food and adult beverages. Day 2 we did the southern route to the Volcano National Park, normally $30 a car, but we have a senior pass to National Parks, therefore cost us nothing. Drove the Crater Drive, saw the live lava area, lava tubes, etc., and did not comprehend until I saw this just how big this park is. Wow; massive, craters from different eruptions for a 20-mile stretch. Both days we drove all day, stopping along the way. Again, stopped at Safeway for dinner things and enjoyed our evening out on the Lanai. David, landlord, gave us directions for the 3rd days visit to a beach about 25 miles away. Just perfect. Sun and shade (provided by the trees). David and Miriam lent us two beach chairs. Saw the famous green turtles on the beach that day. Near Lava Lava Beach club. Before leaving for the beach, made reservations for dinner at the Fish Hoppers Restaurant for 6 PM. Uber took us since we were planning some adult beverages with dinner. Went early and browsed the shopping area, and pier. Waves were coming up over the wall, splashing pedestrians unexpectedly. Wonderful sunset there during dinner. Dinner and shopping were great and Ubered home to hang out on the Lanai again. Each morning we were on the Lanai for coffee and breakfast items we had bought from Safeway, storing milk in the community kitchen's refrigerator, and cereal on the counter, along with paper throw away bowls. The only time we saw other guests was at breakfast. No one was out at night except us. No one ever used the community living room, though it was beautiful. We actually grew to love this place away from the hustle and bustle of the large hotel chains. We reflect on whether we were disturbing anyone while we sat on the Lanai each night, chatting away and planning our next day, reviewing the day that had passed. Miriam said she was so happy that someone was enjoying this space. It was big and beautiful. Why others stayed closed up in their rooms is beyond me. They have many board games and puzzles to use, as well as reference books on the island there for all to use. It was such a peaceful place, and, in the end, we were not disappointed we booked here and would stay again. Great location, off the beaten path, close to the highway. We did almost the entire perimeter of the island, except 28 miles, from this location and saw the islands western, dry, black lava fields, which was a little disturbing signaling death and destruction from the volcanic activity of the past, as well as rebirth as things are growing again in some of this area, to the lush, tropical side of the eastern part of the island, with waterfalls, and fog and misty rain, as well as shopping and a new Hawaiian dress for me from Hilo... just beautiful. Miriam, David and her family are faithful people, spreading uplifting Biblical passages throughout their community areas, and were so happy to be living in their oasis and sharing it with everyone. They purchased this property 4 years ago, leaving the Northern California area behind, with no regrets. David shared that the hardest day of his life was obtaining one-way tickets for his family to embark on this purchase. Again, they have no regrets and love the island. You are free to use anything in the kitchen, as long as you clean up after yourself., including the stove, microwave, plates, utensils, glasses, etc. A very inexpensive (considering the alternatives), quiet, peaceful retreat, with lovely hosts. BTW, there is a hot tub there for you use as well, though we did not use this. Giving this a 4 star only because of the shock on day 1 regarding the stairs with luggage... thank God my husband still lives... lol. Loved this place.
- Vincent (8/5): - It was peaceful staying here. Will recommend to friends and family.
- Billy Lee (10/5): - Hale Maluhia is Hawaiian meaning House of Peace. The name is very appropriate. It is a quiet and peaceful place run by Miriam and Dave. They are wonderful people.
- Joseph (4/5): Not For Everyone - This is a very unusual property. Essentially a large house with a number of out buildings that was built as an inn, it feels more like a family compound that was cobbled together.
The big drawing card is its proximity to Kona-Kailua. You can get to the main part of town in than 10 minutes. It is located above town where it is a bit wetter, so it has a lush feel.
Unfortunately, after that the negatives pile up:
* It is on a small winding road that is fairly busy. It’s location right in the middle of sharp curve means road noise comes from both above and below the property. Family and guest noise was prominent. Ear plugs offered on the bedside table were a troubling sign.
* Because it is in the wetter region, our room had a musty smell that left us congested after each night.
* THIS IS NOT A COVID-SAFE PROPERTY. Neither the owners nor guests observed any COVID precautions.
* This is a property that wears its religious convictions on its sleeve, with many bible sayings displayed prominently. Normally this would be a comfort, but in combination with the attitudes towards masking and the large American flag at the entry to property, there was no mistaking the attitudes of the owners. This is the first place we have ever felt uncomfortable because of the divisions in the US.
Between being uncomfortable physically and socially, this was without question our least favorite stay on the Island. We can not recommend it.
- Heather (10/5): - The hosts are wonderful people and are very helpful. The inn is on the mountainside and is tranquil.
- Eldon (10/5): Cozy, comfy way to be welcomed to Hawaii - Such a great stay in the Banyan Cottage. Spacious with a comfy bed. Hearing the coqui frogs was a great way to be welcomed to Hawaii! The tub was nice (it would have been nice to know that the hot and cold water were the opposite directions as accustomed to).
The property is lush and beautiful! The hosts are so very kind and accommodating.
The listing needs to inform the traveler that there is access to a full kitchen and that some of the windows don't close all the way.
The location is very convenient to touristy restaurants and shopping.
Overall, a great place for a couple, or a throuple, to stay. Mahalo!
- edwardmP4346ZX (4/5): Less expensive Kona area B&B works, but barely - We stayed in a comfortable room with private lanai in a building apart from the main house. The room lacked a fire alarm and extinguisher (although there were mountings for both) and the doors and windows showed a lot of wear and tear. Hot water went out, forcing use of a shower in the adjacent main house. Lots of foliage with riotous bird and tree frog (as well as rooster) noise, so earplugs provided were appreciated. Not much served breakfast aside from coffee and tea, but room had a separate sink, plates, cups, utensils, small frig and microwave to make do with food we brought in.
- Ya-Ling (4/5): - The owners were very nice and helpful, and responded quickly to resolvable issues. The bed and bathroom were pretty clean. However, the property really needs a total update - carpet was very old and visibly dirty, and the room felt dusty in general. Because of the location, the room was always somewhat damp, with no AC or dehumidifier available, so the towels and swimming suits never dry and tend to stink; blinds don’t work and our privacy was kept by very thin curtains. You can hear every noise: loud frogs and crickets, roosters before 5am, and cars driving around three sides of the property. Parking is difficult as the property is on a small lot on a hairpin turn in a mountain road. The smoke alarm in the room went off twice for no reason while we were there, the owner had to replace it with a different unit. We didn’t use the shared kitchen so no comment on that. Overall it provided a bed and a bathroom in a safe area, but wasn’t ideal due to the reasons above.
- Agnieszka (10/5): - Excellent hotel and friendly staff ☺️
- Giorgio (10/5): - Dave was simply amazing...he helped me with everything I needed. Couldn't hope for anything better!
The location is great and very convenient, 10 mins drive out from the center and really a house of peace!!
Literally the best solution I could ever dream of for my trip in Hawaii! Mahalo Dave!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Staff was polite and it was easy check in. Bed was hard, along with pillows. It was a busy road, so you could hear traffic. No AC, fan and open windows only. Hard to get into town because it’s too far to walk and there are not a lot of Ubers.
- james_witte (10/5): Comfortable, affordable inn up the mountain side - We enjoyed our affordable stay at Hale Maluhia Country Inn in their Banyan cottage. The room was clean, well appointed and spacious, allowed our family of 4 to spread out and relax. The kitchenette included plates/bowls/silverware, a coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, fridge, and a sink. A stove with pots and pans is available in a shared kitchen. Laundry facilities available. Towel exchange available. Free parking. We enjoyed conversations with our gracious hosts on their lanai.
No air conditioning, but temps were generally comfortable at this altitude. Fans are provided. Because the screened windows stay open to regulate the temperature, the “house of peace” is not quiet, especially at night. Frogs, birds, rain, rushing drainage water, roosters crowing mornings, occasional traffic noise. Earplugs are provided. We shared our room with a couple of harmless geckos, and a few insects made their way past the screens.
Great place to stay in the Kona area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Dave went out of his way to make our stay comfortable. The setting is serene and rustic...how living on the Big Island would be if we lived here. It is close to Kona airport and hegreets all guests no matter what time they arrive. The large-leafed plants and pond add peace to the cabins. Top ratings for setting and service!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The tea house is beautiful and unique with a great bath tub. There is NO breakfast offered or is offered for additional fee. Breakfast is not included. The hot tub was nice. DIY laundry is $10. It is mostly quiet, but there were occasional disturbances in the nearby neighborhood house up the hill. I felt safe and parking was great! The location is wonderful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed in Maile Room. This is a nice property, and the host is very responsive and welcoming. One major thing to BEWARE: the bed is very firm, squeaky and uncomfortable, especially for side sleepers. Pillows are limited and not suitable for side sleepers as well. It is not just my opinion, my wife and I stayed in three different places on the Big Island, and this is the first time we had this issue. It is really something that can be fixed for the future guests, especially for the price of the stay. Otherwise this is a nice place, clean and well decorated room, beautiful property surroundings. Access to a hot tub is a bonus as well.
- Chris (8/5): Great Place! - Out flight came in a bit later than anticipated and Dave waited for us and made our check-in great. This is not a new property but you feel at home and welcomed. The grounds were great and the birds and other little creatures made sure you knew you were in Hawaii.
- Scott A (2/5): Over priced and uncomfortable - Very uncomfortable beds, way overpriced.Loud frogs in area.I’ve never had ear plugs offered at any hotel in my life.
- CARLOS (10/5): A paradise - Dave and Miriam are amazing hosts. The place is beautiful, surrounded by lush gardens. Up the mountain, just 10 minutes from downtown Kailua Kona. Miriam prepares a fabulous breakfast, mostly homemade (even the bread is homemade). Rooms are cottage type, feel very private.
- Sandy.Jim (10/5): - My 82nd birthday was at the fabulous Hale Maluhia Country Inn. We arrived late , but Dave and Marianne owners were there to greet us. We took the 800sq foot room. A must .!!We reserved the room again for Valentines Day.
If you like the jungle you will like here. The Frogs mating call at nite were music to our ears. I tried the sounds on my wife. "You dont sound like a Frog, " she said, and was fast asleep in our new King Size bed.
Breakfast was a tour of food. Yummy and Fresh. Jim and Sandy
- 3dbram (10/5): Absolutely perfect! - My girlfriend and I stayed her and it’s unbeatable. Homemade breakfast every morning. Meriam and Dave and there children are amazing hosts. Close to Kona and restaurants AND off the beaten path. If/when you are able to go to
Hawaii Big Island stay here! Hot tub. Local advice. Roosters and hens and all types of beautiful birds on the side the mountain in a lush forest. Did I mention the breakfast?!?? Wow.
- Worldtraveler197888 (10/5): Jungle feeling - This is a super nice B&B, quick check in and staff is super friendly. We enjoyed our stay very much. You feel like in a huge jungle - extraordinary experience for the whole family. We‘ll be back soooooon! ✌🏼
- Kari (6/5): - Out of the city with beautiful grounds. Has a great jungle atmosphere with a variety of birds all around.
If you don’t want to be woke up at 6:08 AM by a whinny child next door coming through your window, this is not the place for you. There are very over powering air fresheners in the room that could work for an entire house.
Very friendly host, beautiful place just not very peaceful.
- donh434 (8/5): Quiet Retreat from the Tourist Hoards - Perched ~5 mins up above Kona is this quaint - different B&B. The B&B consists of several buildings connected to porches, patios, and even a hot tub to the central house. The room we had was spacious with a full kitchen and shared outside deck. Breakfast was deliciously custom prepared to your desires by the charming and friendly hostess. Entertainment was provided by the clutch of local chickens who wandered the grounds and raided the bird feeder.
Stay alert it's easy to miss the driveway if coming from above on the narrow twisty road.
- rollerrevenge (10/5): Charming and Peaceful Place - What a wonderful place to come and relax. This is the perfect place to enjoy quiet time, making new friends, sight seeing and more. Miriam and Dave are the warmest hosts one could ask for. My friend and I had wonderful breakfasts in the mornings and enjoyed making new friends with other guests. I am so happy we stayed at this place and will be coming back here the next time we come to Kona. Thank you and Miriam and Dave for a memorable trip to your inn.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We greatly appreciated the personal connection with the owners as well as the tremendous plants and birds on the property.
- djemcee (10/5): Quaint and charming, relaxing BNB - We got everything we expected from this quirky Inn.
Hale Maluhia is not for everyone, but for our purposes it satisfied completely.
We stayed in the Pikaki Room. Very comfortable bed. The room had a microwave and refrigerator and sink.
The breakfast is one of the best we have had anywhere! We are used to having an early start time, but their spread is worth waiting until 8 am.
Dave and Miriam are excellent hosts, we felt like we were guests in someone's private home (which it is).
The grounds are beautifully landscaped.
Even though the buildings look older from the exterior, the insides were nicely renovated and immaculate. (No spider webs anywhere!)
Finally, the location is ideal for exploring the local sightseeing attractions. We liked the area, at a higher elevation which has less humid weather than Kona or Kohala coastal areas.
We could watch the sunset at nearby Holualoa village, only 3/4 mile away.
Kona village was only 3 miles down the hill.
We loved the rural flavor of this place, the sound of chickens, roosters and Coquitlam frogs.
Highly recommended!!!
- kellie (4/5): - This is listed as a B and B. Breakfast cost an additional $30.00. Towels were getting threadbare. Clean though.
- SE_MN_warmth_seekers (10/5): Great place to stay on Kona side of the island - We stayed there for many nights and enjoyed the hospitality (from hosts and guests) and great breakfasts every morning: plenty of Kona coffee, fruit, breads and great omelets. The Pikaki room is very accessible and has enough utensils for eating simple meals there or on the patio. Some might find the accommodations rustic and there is some night time noise from cars & frogs (our room had a fan we used on high speed and didn't have any problems sleeping). We did enjoy our stay there!
- DavdMax (10/5): "The Real Hawaii Experience!" - My wife and I have always stayed oceanfront when vacationing on the various islands of Hawaii. This time we decided to try something different and discovered the "Real Hawaiian Experience" was staying at the Hale Maluhia County Inn on the Big Island. Choosing the Japanese Tea House was one of our most unique stays ever and provided complete privacy. The innkeepers Miriam and Dave provide a sumptuous 5 star breakfast in an idyllic tropical setting and they attend to your every need. Would we stay there again? Absolutely!
- patriciacarter423 (10/5): Amazing hosts and room - We decided to come here because of all the amazing reviews. My husband and I were blessed to stay here for 5 days. We stayed at the Banyan cottage. It was a tropical paradise large room with a tree house feel. The bed was so comfortable. We enjoyed the symphony of chirping birds. We watched the Super Bowl here. Also the breakfast was amazing (made to order omelets, tropical fruit, homemade bread, muffins, granola, yogurt, tropical juices and teas and infused water)
We enjoyed breakfast on the lanai watching the birds and chickens eating breakfast at the bird feeder.
Dave and Miriam were amazing hosts and were helpful with travel ideas and attended to guest needs. We definitely recommend this place and will come again.
- Twila (10/5): - The room had a very comfortable bed and a homey feel. It was bright and clean but cozy with an attached, well appointed bathroom. The property was set in the woods with stone rimmed gardens, groomed terraced lawns and an array of tropical and migrating wild birds at various feeders. The deck was covered and faced more well maintained gardens The tasty home made breakfast and fresh warm bread was served open air on linen tablecloths A peaceful and elegant setting. The hosting family was helpful with local tips and we instantly felt welcome. Even before our visit the communication was excellent.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Outstanding breakfasts! Very friendly hosts. Room had lots of features: able to eat in room or on lanai. Somewhat rustic and noisy but a nice fan kept road & frog noise limited. We really enjoyed it there for many nights.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay here. We loved our daily breakfast of fresh fruit, homemade bread and omelettes. It was fun to watch the birds and exchange tips on where to eat and what to do with fellow travelers each morning. The hot tub was nice and the perfect temperature. Loved the frogs singing at night and the birds singing in the morning. Dave and Miriam are great hosts.
- sam (6/5): - no micro wave fridge wasn't very cold stairs weren't lite like to have broke my neck tv remote was very hard to operate no instructions
- Mark (10/5): -
David and Mirium were wonderful hosts. Breakfast was wonderful. The grounds of the Inn were beautiful. It was an easy drive to get into town.
- firelioness (6/5): Economical but average - From reading all of the positive reviews, I really wanted to like this B&B more, but unfortunately there were a few things that made this experience more ordinary than extraordinary. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and definitely more economical for a family of 3 than most hotels, but there were several key gaps. First, I thought cleanliness could have been better. The entire property is coated in spider webs on the outside. I get that this is a country retreat, but it's really disconcerting to all of a sudden be eye level with a spider or web when walking across. Inside the room, there was also dust around all of the windows and moths / ants crawling around in the bathroom. Second, service was not prompt. The instruction booklet said we could leave towels and trash outside, which would be collected during the day. We did that once and 5 pm rolled around the next day but still nothing had been collected / changed. Third, the highlight of a B&B should be the breakfast, but this one left a bit to be desired. I definitely appreciated the personal touch, but for a breakfast buffet it always felt a bit uncomfortable since there was very little food it seemed for ~5 families. There were ~2 plates of fruit, 1 basket of bread, a few crackers with a dollop of cheese, some yogurt and a few hard boiled eggs to share among everyone. The hosts emphasized that we could ask for more, but psychologically it's just awkward to ask when everyone notices that little has been provided in the first place. As a result, everyone takes a tiny bit, which honestly shouldn't be the case. I did appreciate that the hosts offered made-to-order omelettes, but even those were small and took quite a long time to prepare. I also thought that the inflexible schedule (breakfast only served 8-9 am) could have been difficult for some (although it was fine for us). Fourth, I thought location was a tiny bit annoying. This B&B is situated on top of a large hill and the turn to get in is hidden / rather sharp from the main road. It takes a bit of time to get down the hill and to any sort of food / attractions (anything you can drive to is at least 10 minutes). Okay overall though if you have a car!
Finally, I noticed that the exit survey the hosts sent to me via email instructed me to please leave a positive review publicly on the web, but please send any complaints / constructive feedback privately to their emails. This is a huge NO for me, as I believe reviews of all kinds (either positive or negative) should be posted publicly alike. I hope that the hosts do not mind me sharing these thoughts on TripAdvisor, as I do not think review sites like TripAdvisor should only display positive reviews.
- Charles (10/5): Great vacation hide away - Excellent stay. Great location. Nice home cooked breakfast with homemade bread!
- Verified traveler (10/5): A little bit of heaven on earth. - My husband and I loved it. The Hale Maluhia Country Inn allowed us to completely relax.
The inn is unpretentious, very clean and the grounds are well groomed and lush. The owners, David and Miriam, are kind and welcoming. Miriam is an excellent cook. We particularly enjoyed her homemade bread and muffins.
I recall relaxing with my morning coffee on the front porch. Soft music was playing, the birds were chirping in the bird feeder. It was heavenly.
- JuliaPitlyk (10/5): Beautiful Space, Wonderful Hosts - We adored our stay at the Hale Maluhia Country Inn. The landscape is so lush and well-maintained, with beautiful greenery around every corner. Dave & Miriam were incredible hosts. We are so grateful for their recommendations on sites to see and places to eat -- their recommendations for hikes and beaches made for some of our favorite times on the Big Island. We enjoyed both the quiet privacy of the inn and the opportunity to make new friends over a lovely breakfast each morning. Thank you for such a great experience!
