Guest Reviews
- 802darreni (10/5): Fixing an old landmark - The Blue Cave Castle went through a long period of closure due to it being in a contentious litigation.
The original family now have it back and are working on opening it again for the next busy season.
It had been neglected for a long time.
There is a lot of work to do to get
It open properly between now and then and when it’s ready to receive bookings I will post a link here with another review.
- G3103KObonnies (10/5): The castle is closed for business - The castle is closed. They are no longer accepting guests. It is no longer a hotel. If you have not stayed here, you no longer have the opportunity. The castle is offiecailly closed. Susan won't be opening again. Nada, you missed your chance. Castle closed.
- D8650VFlinar (2/5): Scam - Got a room next door to this blue castle. The blue castle is boarded up, doors covered up with bricks. Don't book a room unless you want to be scammed. Locals say the original owner passed away about 15 yrs ago don't know if that is true. But it definitely is closed.
- matkastner (2/5): Out of business! - BEWARE!!! DANGER!!! This place is closed down and boarded up!!! We made a reservation AND PAID for it, got a confirmation number, too. When we arrived after being up for nearly 24 hours, we made the discovery that we had no place to stay. Luckily we found another lovely place just down the road (Begonia Cliff Hotel). U.timately we got a full refund through our credit card company. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!!
- wildseas (10/5): My stay was before 2021 but many times before. - I love the BCC and the owner Sue and everyone that works there. Sue is a very kind owner that would bring her employees lunch daily. The first few times there was a open kitchen for guest. And the last few times it was a small Cafe with a awesome cook and menu. They would serve you anywhere you'd like. Just a few minute walk there's a nice place with Original Jamaucan food and some street vendors with jerk chicken. So good.
I believe I stayed there 7 times. The rooms are very clean. Yes they air dry the laundry. I do this at home and love the fresh smell. Did not have a ant problem. If you leave crumbs out.you will get ants anywhere. I've traveled to many countries and the Blue Cave.Castle is the only place where I never seen a cock roach.
Snorkeling is the best. Going down the old pirate cave, under the castle is the most amazing thing Ive seen.
I always got up before the sun and wanted coffee. The security guy would see I had it early. Ive seen dolphins jumping in front.
So if you want a awesome adventure, this is the place and I want to go back very soon.
- 84warrenb (2/5): Closed without warning March 2019 - We had reservations, showed up and the place close the day before we got there. We had no warning and had to search for a place to stay for our week vacation. They gave us no help in finding someplace to stay and no refund of deposit. Terrible way to start a vacation.
- vacafunholiday (10/5): Past visit - Our stay was many years ago but just thought I would say how much I miss it and drop some pictures. Hope to one day see it alive again! We would definately return. The view is amazing, rooms unique...a very special place
- 710jeanettef (8/5): Quiet nice place - Very cool room in a castle hanging over the cliffs. Cool breezes , clean and quiet. No bar, music or restaurant . Didnt like the fact that I had to get the lifeguard to allow me to jumpin the water...safety format I know...but it was annoying...especially for a person born in the water...surfer, boater snorkeler, diver and great swimmer
- sreneesa (6/5): Traveled Jan 2016 - Came here with my mother and daughter (she was 20 at the time) in a room with three beds. Room was average. Beautiful views, actually breathtaking. I could sit out there all day and look at the ocean. However, they had no umbrellas to shield you from the sun so I was baking, at times, using clothing to cover my neck and entire head. No restaurant, drinks or food on site. Great coffee and I'm normally not a coffee drinker.
Lifeguard was nice and helpful. They also had a security guard and dog. Nice people.
The castle is located in a quaint area with little eateries and bars close by. Didn't talk to the manager much. She never really interacted with guests. Did see her boyfriend a couple times telling the people working there what to do and stuff like that. He didn't say much either. My mom was a regular there and I guess a lot of the staff that all came to love, were let go.
No air conditioning in our room. There may be air conditioning in other rooms; unsure. Our room was located by the stairs that leads to the lower area where you could go in the water to swim and snorkel. My mom loves it there. She tried to book a few times over the years, but didn't really get straight answers from the owner. Even heard someone booked there from out the country, came to the castle, and was told they weren't open!
I believe the towels were air dried so they were kind of stiff feeling, but rooms were cleaned everyday and housekeeper was nice.
I will say there was hundreds of ants everywhere outside and I had three kinds of bites from head to toe. I was miserable. I would wake up in the middle of the night and take warm showers. I have never itched so much in my life. Luckily I had no scars. Little bites, welts, etc. The lifeguard got me some aloe, but unfortunately it didn't help. They really need to do more bug control on the property. I can remember sitting there and seeing and trying to prevent ants from crawling on my legs. Perhaps they have the bug problem under control now. Beds were uncomfortable and blankets smelled kind of moldy or old. There are cracks all around the door so at times, the light would come in the room making it hard to sleep. But, I was having a hard time anyway from being bit up. I never been so miserable. lol...
If they provided umbrellas to protect you from the sun, food and drinks onsite, more comfortable beds with newer linens and controlled the ant/bug problem on outside property, it would be a more comfortable place for vacation.
If you are looking for a bare minimum place to stay, with a beautiful exterior and gorgeous breathtaking views, then the Castle may be a great place to vacation. My mother loved it there and was there several times, and the only reason she hasn't been there is due to how unpredictable it can be on knowing if the Castle will be open or not, so I will say that there are several people who do love it there.
- Bradley (10/5): Blue Cave Castle is breathtaking. - Blue Cave Castle is the most unique vacation property my wife and I ever stayed at. It is, after all, a castle. Stayed in the penthouse. Basically 3 floors of the building. Very few guests. Very private. Highest point in Negril. Unbelievable views. This is not a 5 star all inclusive resort. This is a private residence. No bar or restaurant. But the neighborhood is the real deal Jamaica.
- Gabriel (10/5): Great location, beautifil cliff - Unique hotel, one of the kind,
Great staff, I will come here again
- Art (8/5): Beautiful, Iconic Property - The Blue Cave Castle is a unique, secure, quiet place to stay on the cliffs. This is not a fancy resort with all the amenities, but is a comfortable, beautiful place right on the cliffs with an amazing view. There is no restaurant or bar on site, but plenty of places within a short walking distance. There is full time security, and even a certified lifeguard. You will have no hassles or problems here. Great place to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. A short, inexpensive taxi ride will get you to the beach or wherever you want to go.
- Josette (8/5): Restaurant - No restaurant at the hotel, so no breakfast!
- Cher (4/5): Quirky hotel lacking honesty - No advertised breakfast, no restaurant onsite. Standard room has no tv or A/c-could be clearer about that. Staff called friends instead of registered taxi services. No orientation to hotel or area. Bed was a torture device. Ok if you want the bare minimum.
- skypath (4/5): Terrible management ruins an adorable quirky icon - I was horribly disappointed by my stay at the castle. I went with my husband and 14 yr old daughter. We stayed in the Penthouse.
Penthouse: As everyone says, it is amazing in that it has 3 very quirky levels, lots of private sunning spaces, very castle-like, 2 bathrooms, multiple bed options, many great views and is really quite fun, or has potential to be. I absolutely adored the building itself.
Bedding: Really quite musty and I wished I had brought something else to sleep on. I actually slept on the beach chair one night. It was much cleaner, had a soft cover, and it was also quite fun to sleep on the rampart under the stars as opposed to inside the funky smelling bedroom.
Waterfront and swimming: I don't know what else to say except that the owner must have lost her mind as regards swimming. The whole reason to stay on the cliffs is to swim off the cliffs. The castle does NOT have a pool or hot tub, it has a wonderful cliff-side ocean front with decent snorkeling right of the cliff. There are 2-3 different entrances into the sea, one through the cave. Apparently awhile before we arrived someone somewhere was injured/killed from a cliff and so the owner seems to have decided it is not 'safe' for anyone to swim. What this meant was that while everyone else along this shoreline resorts was happily diving in, huge locked gates barred our entrance to the sea. The waves were not even big. I'm not an idiot, I have been swimming and diving (and teaching others, and captaining a boat) all of my life and I know what is safe and what is not, and this was quite maddeningly safe. Each day we would go downstairs with the intent to have a great snorkel and we would find the gates locked and no amount of pleading to the VERY unfriendly guard (who seemed to have some relationship with the owner who appeared to live there) would unlock it. Just once we got one friendly guard to let us out for 10 minutes and then he got in trouble and we were admonished and brought back in. The water was SO nice for that 10 minutes, nice waves lapping against the rocks. It is SUCH as spectacular location.
Wifi: You have to sit in a window or go down to central area to use it. Good luck getting password if you arrive in the evening. We needed the wifi badly because we were forced to book tours each day since there was absolutely NOTHING to do at the castle without water access. Nothing. Not how we planned to spend our week.
Food: When we booked, it was billed as having a restaurant. It did not. You have to pay a taxi driver to take you downtown for food, or walk on the very very scary road getting propositioned every few feet, to a very unappealing local restaurant.
Amenities: Really there aren't any. The castle itself is one big amenity and it is sooo great, but with no water access it may as well be in Scotland as Jamaica.
The situation was so bad that we actually left early and booked at a Hilton for our last 3 days, so we could have some beach time. We loved the eclectic nature of the castle - the Hilton had no character - but really we didn't go to Jamaica to be locked out of the water for our own safety, when the waves were just little ripples and everyone else on the shore was swimming.
It took me almost a year to publish this review because I really don't like writing negative reviews but I owe this to the TripAdvisor community.
- Majzet (10/5): Gorgeous - Stayed here in... 2010, with a girl friend. Beautiful. Had the best time ever. Teddy served up great food and everyone were so friendly. Snorkled around the cliff. Started every day with a swim and a smile!
Returned 2,5 years ago. Don't know precisely how it is now, same crew etc. But it truly is a magical place. I mean - it's a blue castle, on a cliff and a cave... Thanks again!
- jeffbK1430MP (8/5): Quirky and wonderful but rustic - This place is exactly as billed - a quirky, beautiful place where you can literally take stairs right off your room and dive into the gorgeous turquoise blue waters. People are super friendly and helpful. If you are expecting elegance, go elsewhere as rooms are basic but for our family it was terrific.
- LuvSunandSea (10/5): Fourth visit and still excellent! - My favorite place in Negril! Beautiful views and quirky rooms! The staff is so very kind and helpful and the owner Susan keeps a watchful eye on everything. The rooms each have a fridge to keep your drinks cold! Can't wait to return!
The seas kicked up quite a bit on our last visit and luckily there was a room in back open which they moved us too.
The other guests were so friendly, it just feels like home!
- BVR (10/5): Our favorite place in Negril, especially from a price/value standpoint, but not for everybody - We have stayed at other places in Negril - other cliffside lodgings that kept raising their prices year after year to the point where we just could not take the sticker shock anymore. We have stayed at Blue Cave Castle (in 3 different rooms there) and been delighted every time. My advice:
Consider (seriously) the Blue Cave Castle if what you want is:
1) To amuse yourself and/or just sit and watch the ocean waves;
2) Relative peace and quiet (except for the sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks and the wind blowing off the sea);
3) To be left alone and not have staff constantly knocking on your door or approaching you to check something or another or offering you drinks, etc.;
4) A beautiful, expansive, view of the sea and sky day or night; and
5) A budget-minded situation - about a third the cost of the more well known lodgings on the cliffs of Negril.
On the other hand, Skip Blue Cave Castle if what you want is:
1) An all-inclusive. Other than coffee in the morning, there is no food or drink offered on the premises. There are restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within a block or two along the main road, though, and the rooms come with small refrigerators.
2) To be entertained. Here, you make your time into whatever you want it to be.
3) To have local music as background noise. Blue Cave Castle is one of the quietest places in Negril. You won't find your music/party on the premises.
4) Spa or spa-like services. You may find those nearby, but not on site.
5) Super-luxurious rooms. The rooms are clean and functional but nothing palatial. Some have balconies almost as big as the room itself. In our experience, the rooms are well-maintained and comfortable if smallish by American standards. A few have cable TV but most do not. This is the wrong place to stay if you need TV to have a good vacation. We have stayed in two of the ground floor rooms and also in the upper tower.
6) A dog-free environment. The owners have a large but very friendly dog who does wander the public areas from time to time. She doesn't bark, and doesn't jump on anyone, but be forewarned if you are allergic.
Blue Cave Castle is a great fit for my husband and me, but we know some people would be bored out of their minds here.
- jamaicadvisor (6/5): One of Negril's best kept secrets! - I love this place for price, ambiance, and location.. Its not for everyone, just the self-sufficient , non resort minded type. Could use a lifeguard as well someone who cares about the guest's basic needs. ...especially the needs of tourists...if implemented will give a 5 star!
- jons662 (10/5): Fantastic get away/ extremely romantic! - I have stayed at this wonderful location for many years (more than 10). The grounds are comfortable and the rooms attractive. The penthouse room has an outdoor spa! There is swimming access to the sea with an outdoor shower. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The owner is most welcoming! You can sunbath on the lawn overlooking the cave or on the various levels of deck, as if your were on a cruise! I highly recommend this affordable hotel for a romantic getaway!
- 35audreym (4/5): Things change - not always for better - The bricks & mortar are still there but the heart & soul of this place are gone for me. With the closure of Teddy's Hideaway Eatery and the dismissal of long-time manager Petrona, it's not the same. Time for this regular to move on.
Teddy can be found at Negril Treehouse on the beach!
- gary150207 (6/5): Blue Cave Castle Penthouse - We spent four nights in the penthouse, You go up two flights of stairs then you enter the bottom part of the penthouse, this part is a large open area half shade and half there is a shower and a bathroom.
Two lounge chairs for private sunning. Go up one more flight of stairs to the guest room and a small balcony with a great view and to chairs. The room is not air-conditioned but has a nice breeze.
There is a bathroom and a small kitchen area with a small fridge. It would be nice if there was a microwave, there is a hot plate but we never used it. The worst part about the room is the bed. It is a thick piece of foam
And it has a funky smell to it, who knows what has been absorbed in it. Up one more flight of stair to the very top balcony, Nice view but you will never use it because there are no chairs jus a open space.
We only got to swim one day they pull the ladders and lock the sea access for the smallest waves. Three access points to the ocean one was always blocked off, the hole to the cave has no ladder to get out you swim out the cave to the other ladder with them pulled most of the time we never swam in the cave. We ate breakfast and dinner there once and both were very good. It is safe and secure. We did have a great time and would recommend checking out the Penthouse.
- Blue_Bomber_fan (8/5): Another Nice Stay - This was our second visit to Negril, and we stayed at Blue Cave Castle. The location is absolutely perfect - you can walk a few minutes in both directions to find wonderful local restaurants and bars. A short cab ride gets you to the beach, the bank, or the cambio. The L+M grocery is right across the street. The price is very reasonable - only $90 for a "superior" air-conditioned room until the middle of December.
The staff are wonderful. Michael and Santa (our security guards) were very friendly, as is Petrona (the manager). All of them treated us like family.
The rooms were clean, but don't expect the kind of facilities you'd see at a big fancy resort! The beds were comfortable enough, but this is one area that I think could be improved. I've got a bad back, so it would be nice to have a higher quality bed (I'd give it a 5 in that case).
The wifi is good outside, but it didn't seem to penetrate the thick walls of our room.
- NessieBo (8/5): Special place. - This is a unique place to spend a few days. The rooms are a good size and the hotel is clean. The true beauty of the place is the access to the water! You can walk down a stair case to a private area and swim right off the rocks into beautiful coral reefs. We saw more fish, turtle and other sea life in the first few minutes than we have seen on snorkelling trips. Only plan a few days though because the hotel is up on the cliffs and far away from restaurants or night life.
