Guest Reviews
- 216frederickh (10/5): Great place for the price. - I stayed at Charlie's motel in Frostburg for about 3 nights a week for several months because of my job. I got a single room. I stayed there with no problems. Rick, the manager, took care of everything and did a great job making sure everything was in tip-top shape.

- Gerald (10/5): Nice lil place - Very clean. Great service. Definitely will use again.
- Patricia (4/5): Not a clean place to stay - The room was filthy. A tray from the refrigerator was on the floor. A toilet paper roll was stuffed between the bed and nightstand. The toilet had old urine on the underside of the seat. The drain in the shower would not drain well. When you used the sink the water would back up into the shower along with specks of rust from the pipes
- Verified traveler (2/5): Would not recommend! - No one was available for check in. When I called the number for service, they were at Chic-Fil-A and would be there when they were done. Room smelled like cigarette smoke and dirty feet. Was told, it just smells like that, they can't get it clean. Carpet was stained and had cigarette burns. Microwave was dirty, there were dead/frozen ants in the freezer, the shelf for the refrigerator was on the floor, didn't dare use the shower.
- Diana (2/5): - Wish I could show photos of room
- Chance (4/5): - its hard to believe anyone gave this place a positive rating. Thank God I was only there for one night.
- Kathleen (2/5): Stay away!!! - We booked based on the good reviews but can't believe we stayed at the same motel as the reviewers did!. First, I have to say, that we were told that the motel was changing hands and the fellow who checked us in said he had just been cleaning carpets. I believe we were the ONLY guests the one night in Sept. 2022 that we stayed, and it is possible that the hotel was not accepting guests and our booking should not have been accepted; there was a lit No Vacancy sign in the window. When we opened the door to our room, we were greeted with a strong smell of wet wool but the carpet did not look at all clean. The shower looked like a bucket of dirty water had been emptied in it: visible hair, dirt and who only knows what else. There was no window to open for fresh air. The only window looked out on an enclosed glassed-in corridor so there was light, but no privacy. The sheets and towels appeared clean enough, but the fact the towels were navy blue made me wonder if they were hiding dirt. We have been travelling quite a bit for over 6 years and this may have been the worst place we have ever stayed. The only good thing about it was the price, but I would never stay there again even for free.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The place was disgusting and in extremely poor condition. How does it rate as “fabulous” on the app?
- John (10/5): - Outstanding service from staff in accommodating my lodging needs.
- Robin (10/5): - Small mom & pop type establishment- clean & cozy and CHEAP!!! Will definitely stay here again.
- Stephen (10/5): overnight - Overnight in Frostburg MD. The hotel was a basic place to spend the night, nothin fancy but clean ,Quiet and comfortable. we were able to walk to downtown.
- David (6/5): Low price is not always the best option. - The manager of the motel was extremely nice. Unfortunately the room was not clean. They could have done a better job cleaning it in between guests. The first warning sign was the strong smell of food that someone cooked in the room prior to me checking in. Also there was hair in the sink and in the shower. Lots of stains all over the furniture and carpeting. Bathroom floor had a floor mat that was dirty as well. All and all it was pretty gross. The bed and bed sheets were clean though.
- william (10/5): - Very close to everything!! There’s a hometown freeze across the street for some excellent food and treats. The stay was great. The bathroom was a little small but it had good water pressure and hot water. The bed was comfortable and it was nice and quiet and we felt safe at night.
- Amanda (8/5): - Very weak Wi-Fi and in a dead zone for cell service
- Vladimir (10/5): - ok room, friendly host
- Paul (8/5): - Quiet and clean
- Frank (8/5): - Clean and comfortable. Basic amenities but close to everything in Frostburg; can walk to restaurants, bar, ice cream, etc. Great affordable location for exploring the mountians of western MD. Stayed here before (previous owner) and will stay here again.
- Tom Joseph (10/5): - Very helpful staff excellent manager
- Barbara (10/5): - Friendly reception, quiet, beds were comfortable.
- John (10/5): Great Smaller Motel - Nice and very clean smaller/older motel. Walking distance to a good steakhouse and across the street from an ice-cream shop. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++
- Bunny (8/5): - Nice
- Robert (8/5): - Quiet, safe, affordable, and well maintained older style motel. Room access inside a weather proof corridor, especially nice during inclement and cold/snowy weather. Near several good dining options w/n walking distance as well as a bar/grill located on the property that opens in the late afternoon/early evening. Have stayed here multiple times when passing through the area. Price is best that I've found of all other lodging options in the area.
- Jack (10/5): - Nice little motel. Very basic, clean and the bed was comfortable. Would stay again.
- Camille (8/5): - Super petit motel avec bar attenant. Le personnel est charmant.
- Bob (10/5): - A down home non chain motel. Very friendly and helpful owner. Very clean room. I would come back.
- Syed (6/5): - Overall ok. Stayed for a night. Bed was not comfortable at all; side springs were very weak on one side of the bed and couldn’t hold 145 pounds - felt like you’d fall while sleeping. Mattress needs to change. Receptionist was courteous.
- Cassandra (8/5): - Nothing fancy but clean room/bed to sleep in for a quick overnight stay.
- Lorraine (8/5): - I was born and raised in Frostburg. Been to the hurry back bar before. Never stayed at Charlie’s motel, I was surprised with the room I really liked it. If I go back to Frostburg I’m sure I will stay at Charlie’s again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Low-end roadside motel - I booked this hotel based on the glowing reviews and 8.8/10 rating. While this facility has its merits, it is no where in the ballpark of most 8+ rated facilities. My family was not at ease here, and I regretted booking it. On the positive side, everyone did sleep soundly in the comfortable beds, with clean linens and clean air conditioning (unlike many budget hotels whose AC has a slight hint of mildew, this air was very clean). Room was quiet. Despite these positives, the place has a such a run-down vibe that I would rate it overall 4/10.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff, nice bar/grill on premises.
Would have liked a recycling bin next to regular trash.
- Richard L. (10/5): no frills, but comfortable and inexpensive - This is a simple and inexpensive motel. Great for a one night stay while skiing nearby. It did not have some amenities that more expensive booking have, like a coffee maker, Keurig or otherwise or packaged plastic cups, but it was fine. I really like that they had soft absorbent towels, seemed very new.
- Juliet (8/5): - Excellent service. Friendly people. Exceptionally clean
- LittleWretch (10/5): - My destination was the Canaan Valley in wild, wonderful West Virginia. Instead of sleeping in a sub-freezing campground, I opted for a night at Charlie’s. Nothing fancy. A warm, comfy room with TV, fridge, desk and bed. I had no idea Frostburg was such an interesting town. I might return just to cycle and hike the historic trails in the Frostburg-area. Charlie’s was just what I needed, Thank you!
- Jennifer (8/5): - Charlie is very friendly and made us as well as our big dog welcome at his motel. Our room, though small, was neat and clean with comfortable, new mattresses. The bathroom had a new shower stall and was spotlessly clean too. There are lots of restaurants close by. We would stay again.
- John (10/5): Nice Motel at a reasonable price - A clean and well kept older "mom & pop" type motel close to a steak house and across the street is an ice-cream place.
A++++++++
- tod (10/5): A Treasure of a find! - This place is AMAZING! It's an older facility but man it's is really cool. It's concrete walls are the thickest I've ever stayed in: making it the quietest place I've ever stayed. The decor is decades old but kept us nicely! You should never remodel this motel - seems like I was in 1950 (but with a big screen, upgraded shower and ice-cold AC)
- James (10/5): - After a long day of traveling with Airport delays. I finally arrived at the Motel. The sign on the office door said "After hour check ins. Please go to the bar" So I proceeded to the bar, mear feet away. The lovely young lady behind the bar had my paperwork and keys, she was expecting me. Being it was after 1am and was in a bar, I stayed and had a couple of drinks.
I would recommend this Motel to any who asked.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Went to town to attend a College open house. Met all expectations and was perfect for the night for my son and I. The young lady in the pub was very nice as well. Recommended great restaurant that we enjoyed a sit down dinner at.
- rashby99 (10/5): Excellent service - We stayed one night while riding the GAP trail. Room was older but Very clean great!! They let us take out bikes in the room with us and we're very friendly!! If I go do the Gap trail again will definitely stay here again
- Tom (8/5): - Property is a little dated but kept up and clean. Proprietor was very friendly and courteous.
- mary (4/5): NOT fabulous! - can’t believe this hotel is rated “fabulous, 8.6”. It is old and rundown, black mold in the shower, rust and rot on the floor around the toilet, afraid to touch the shower knobs because they looked like black mold, afraid to touch the door knob on the front door into the hotel because the whole door was so filthy dirty, no coffee anywhere in hotel.
- Bud (8/5): - Property is fine and owner is very pleasant, however, when we showed up to check-in, there was no one in the office, it was locked and we waited hour and a half to get room. We ended up contacting Expedia who got ahold of owner and we got our room. Again, he was very pleasant, however, there is no other way to check in.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent location. Close to many restaurants. Adjoining tavern is great.
- pugloverinyakima (8/5): Good find - This is a locally owned motel. It was clean, had a/c, comfy beds and a small fridge WITH a freezer (which we appreciate as we travel with a cooler with cold packs). Pets are welcome. No frills. Soap is provided. Bring your own shampoo and hairdryer. No coffee.
The owner, John, is humorous. We enjoyed him!
- EA (10/5): - Great value for those of us traveling on a budget. Check in was fast, parking lot was well lit and parking spots were close to the rooms.
- DakotaF308 (8/5): Great Allegheny Passage trip - John was so very helpful and courteous !! Treated my daughter and I VERY well ! Stopped in during the heat wave and he made sure the a/c was on for us before we got in! He will even pick you up from the trailhead if you need a ride! Can’t beat the price ! Everything we needed, no frills, just a simple older motel!
Thanks for all your help John!!

- Verified traveler (10/5): - the place was nice and clean, people where very friendly. nice and quiet.just right.
- Lynn (10/5): Great little budget motel, clean + great service - Great little budget motel, service was outstanding- shuttle for bikers on GAP trail, hose and rags to clean bikes, outdated but clean and comfortable rooms.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Exactly as advertised I would absolutely stay at Charlies Motel again. Thanks John
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location! Great value! Excellent customer service!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - There was no one on staff during check out in the am
- Robin (8/5): Would happily stay here again - The internet steered me right on this one. I was traveling for a class field trip, and drove to the area the night before. All I needed was a decent, inexpensive place to sleep, and Charlie's Motel fit the bill. The room is smallish, but not cramped at all. Everything was clean. There's also a small refrigerator/freezer unit in the room, and had I realized that I would've made better use of it. I came in late, so went over to the bar to check in, and everyone there was friendly. The motel is on the "main drag" and is walkable to restaurants and coffeehouses. The only thing I didn't care for was the scent of cleaning solution that was in the room and on the sheets, but that was a minor concern. (I guess some people like that because they think it smells "clean" but to me it has a sickly-sweet chemical scent.) The next morning, John at the front desk was friendly and helpful as could be. This is how small businesses should be run - especially in the hospitality industry!
- mkrobben (10/5): A Soft Landing - Last month I was moving from Baltimore to Saint Louis and stopped in Frostburg, three hours into my drive. After a stretching my legs, I returned to my car only to find it was completely dead. Flash forward to a tow to Red Ridge Auto Repair and crying in front of my new favorite mechanic, I walked across the street to Charlie’s. John, the owner, kindly listened to my plight and settled me into a room. The room was clean, very quiet, and had a World Champion air conditioner. John was so flexible about my check out, “you’ve got enough on your mind with your car breaking down, just let me know when you can” I think were his exact words. If you find yourself in a similar situation or just happen to be visiting the charming town of Frostburg, I highly recommend Charlie’s for a good night sleep and a very very kind owner!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Cheap, clean, friendly; likely to stay next year when visit to that area is required.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I was looking for a simple, affordable place to stay, and Charlie's Motel delivered. It's safe, clean, and covers the basics without spending money on extra, unnecessary things.
- Ellen1312014 (8/5): Nice no frills place to stay - My cousins and I stayed here when we were doing family history. John the owner was very nice and the room was clean. There were 3 of us, but we were only left 2 towels. We ate and had a drink at the connected bar. This was no frills, but was good. The waitress was really good and spent time talking to us.
- travelingjim1 (8/5): Old, but well kept. - Old motel with smallish rooms. Near Frostburg State University. Restaurant is on site. Close to other restaurants. Privately owned, but with low rates. This reminds me of the motels we stayed at when I was a child. Several miles off the interstate. Quiet.
- Schizodoc (10/5): Small Room, But Cheap Prices - This was a perfect place for us to stay overnight on our way to Harper's Ferry, WV. The rates was great, staff friendly and the room quiet and clean. That's all we needed to be happy! If you are looking for upscale-then this is not the place for you!
- BaddMonkey (8/5): Excellent value - hilarious owner - This is an interesting motel, u-shaped with a lively bar at one end. Also atypical in that there is an entrance into a hallway so that the motel room door is interior. The room is clean and comfortable, the mattress firm and provides a good night's sleep. Plenty of hot water too. Great price and value. John, the owner (who bought it from Charlie 35 years ago) has a great sense of humor and was very easygoing. Room has a microwave and refrigerator/freezer but no coffee maker. No breakfast, pool, or fitness center. Just a good, quiet night's sleep for a good value.
- NovaSouth (10/5): Great place with LOW price - Charlie's is a gem. Room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Price was a bargain compared to the mega-hotel chain offerings in the area. Staff super friendly, which is in keeping with the people who live in Allegany County, Maryland, If you are looking for no-frills lodgings that will not dent your budget, Charlie's is for you. I will definitely be staying here on my next trip to western Maryland
- Slovakdude (8/5): No frills. Very clean. Bed and pillows were very comfortable. And they have cheap pool. - Check in was very easy and the gentleman was friendly. Make sure you ask for the Code 14 top secret wifi password, it's worth it. Room was small but we knew that in advance. A/C, Microwave, fridge, freezer, TV, and everything worked great. Overall very clean room. We did spend some time at the built on bar and the folks were very friendly, beers were cold and inexpensive, and where can you play pool for 50 cents a game. The mattresses and pillows were way above average for your typical American country motel which was a pleasant surprise, and it's nice to wake up refreshed. There were folks grilling in the parking lot and enjoying some adult beverages when we arrived but it was dead quiet at night.
- maureend480 (10/5): Clean, comfortable room - I stayed at this hotel with my daughter and grandson on the way to West Va and we were pleased with our stay. I was met by a man in the office and he was very kind and efficient. He was quick to get us settled, yet he made sure he answered all my questions. As the other reviews state, if you're looking for a 5 star luxury hotel, this is not it. However, if you're looking for a quiet, clean and safe room to stay for a good nights sleep, this is the place. Oh, and did I say reasonable? It's reasonable and fits the bill. Is it older? Yes, but it's clean, safe and comfortable with a caring owner/manager. We are happy that we stayed at Charlie's.
- AshleighF32 (2/5): Owner has bad attitude, discriminated against people with disabilities - We booked this motel as a one night place to crash while visiting family. No one informed us that we had to check in at the bar, so when we got there we went to the office and had to ponder what to do as no one was there. We were late getting in (It was about 1 am) and the bartender was clearly not interested in talking to us once she realized we weren’t staying for drinks. (If you’re curious about the bar, it’s a bunch of locals and when you walk in everything stops dead, everyone stares at you...it’s not the kind of place outsiders feel welcome). So our goal was to get out of there and get to our room. Once we were in our room, we realized that the bartender hadn’t told us our checkout time and It wasn’t on the receipt either. We were not going in that bar again, so we decided It really didn’t seem like the kind of place that was going to get testy about us being a little late, and we were planning to leave before noon anyway. (Here’s the part where I do feel a little culpable for this bad experience- in our discomfort and the bartenders inattention, we neglected to tell the bartender that we have an ESA. There was nowhere on the online booking to add a pet and we were so uncomfortable in the bar and the bartender was so clearly disinterested in us, It slipped our minds.)
But the next day the owner was beating on our door and stood there lecturing me about being a liar and kept chastising me like a stern parent about the check out time (which we missed by 20 minutes). He had such a horrendous attitude that when we did check out I decided to confront him about our experience in the bar and make sure he knew that we weren’t just late for no reason. Even if we had been, the appropriate action would be to charge a late checkout fee, not to lecture and chastise your customers. (Allow me to also explain, this isn’t the kind of place that stays fully booked. It’s not like anyone was waiting to get into our room. There are signs everywhere that scream “vacancy”, both literal neon signs and the fact that there are no cars in the parking lot).
When I tried to tell him about our experience at the bar, he fired back about my dog. I explained that he is an ESA, and the owner said he couldn’t be an ESA because he is a puppy. Now my dog is 5 lbs, but he is 3 years old. The owner went on to say that if I wanted to keep a dog there I would have had to provide certification and he would have had to been wearing a vest etc etc. That is directly non compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. I need a letter from my therapist to fly with my dog, but to have an ESA or Service animal in a hotel, you do not need to provide any documentation or certification, and asking about the service animal further is a breach of health information privacy. That made me mad, and that is what pushed me over the limit to post this review.
The owner was culpable in creating this situation due to his crappy customer service, cheapness and bad attitude. The owner is in direct violation of the ADA, and I have filed a complaint against him.
As far as the room goes, It was ok. Think crappy but clean super 8.
But the management isn’t worth the cheap deal. Go to one of the bigger hotels, spend the extra $20.
- NeverUnpacked (8/5): Had to stay here! - I was searching for an overnight stop on our trip east, and when this popped up I couldn't pass it up. Yes, it is a basic, "vintage" property with all that goes with it, but our room was clean, bed comfortable, rates very reasonable and it is pet friendly. Microwave and fridge included. I had a beer and bite to eat at the adjacent bar and hit the hay. Great spot if you're looking for the basics and nothing fancy at a great price. We would stay here again.
- MacNPugs (10/5): Clean and homey - I stayed here for an extended period of time when I visited and I loved it. I love that it sat back a little bit from the college. It was clean, the two staff members were nice, it was great. You get what you pay for definitely. The best part of the room was it offered a microwave. I will definitely stay here when I visit again.
- rachelcP6355ZL (10/5): Surprisingly awesome - I stayed in room 9. Usually motels aren't considered that nice, at least I wasn't expecting anything that nice but it was really awesome here. It is kinda old fashioned, but in a good way. The room included 2 double beds, a mini fridge, a microwave, air conditioning, and a good amount of outlsets. There is a shower and sink like expected. It is close to many places nearby so I recommend this place for anybody. The staff are also really nice and will get you what you need. Also, the price is reasonable and wifi is included.
- frugalyankee (4/5): Low price with dingy and small room - Low price with dingy and small room. Small bath as well. Plenty of hot water but would not stay here again. Fairly quiet with enclosed front hallway which had strong cigarette smell. On busy road but quiet.
- Sandy1364 (10/5): Great Value - Staff were great and friendly. Room was very clean and had that old time charm!I would definitely stay here again. Close to everything and did int have to drive far to get anywhere also a pet friendly hotel which made it great also.
- patriciamG4811OV (10/5): Good people, Great time! - Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Clean and well maintained rooms. Great price and location to the Great Allegheny Passage for biking. They totally respected my privacy when I took ill one evening and didn't wake me the next day.
- 558martene (10/5): Excellent Value - The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Gave me great advice for a restaurant up the street and after a long day of driving it was nice to have a beer at the "Hurry Back" Looking forward to a return visit with my family. Next time I visit, I will book the room directly from the motel's website which would have been easier for me since I would not have to use my credit card any more than necessary.
