Guest Reviews
- Alan (8/5): - Splendid room. Friendly reception from Abdslem Breakfast is pretty minimal and could certainly be more varied. The location isn't great - further from the centre than we expected and we were advised we should take a taxi back after dinner
- Kaizar (3/5): - The breakfast had a decent spread. The location is a bit out of the way from the Medina. the street outside was dirty.
Inside, the place felt pretty grimy and dark. the rooms were dirty with bugs and musty sheet. The lighting was either poor or painful florescent.
- Leoni (10/5): - Hübsche Unterkunft mit sehr netten Personal in guter Lage
- Naila (10/5): -
- Alexander (10/5): Great place and people - Beautiful building - arrival felt like coming straight into a museum. Abdslem and all staff were so lovely and welcoming too and made arriving in Tunisia so great. Without a doubt the first thing I’d look to do when visiting Tunis again would be booking here. Also breakfast was terrific
- Chantal (7/5): - Beautiful historical Dar. With great rooftop.
Neighbourhood was very nice, walking distance of say 20 min to Medina.
Nice staff, I felt at home.
- Katerina (10/5): - Everything was amazing! We loved the buildin, the neighborhood, the owner and the stuff. We will definately come back to this wonderful place as we felt like home.

Bellezza strutturale e architettonica in ogni angolo
Ottima colazione abbondante e varia
- gaia (9/5): - Bellissima casa tradizionale
- Abdul Malik (9/5): Baiki aircon - Classic , Aircon tidak sejuk
- Yuyan (6/5): Pleasant - Staying in such a historic place was a really special and unforgettable experience. There were a few things that left us feeling a bit disappointed. The room didn’t have a trash bin, and the one we stayed in was quite different from the photos on Booking.com. When we asked, the staff said the pictures were just for reference, I can understand, but the way the images were selected felt a bit misleading.
Although the receptionist was kind and easy to communicate, we were surprised when he smoked right in front of us without asking. There were also no towels in the room, and when we asked for them, they smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, which made me a little sad.
Later that night, the receptionist seemed to be having a private phone call in the patio area, which was a bit noisy.
Considering the price, it didn’t really feel like staying at a hotel. I tried to think of it more as visiting a historic private home and being a guest, rather than expecting a hotel experience.
- Argyrios (7/5): Cute traditional stay on a budget - Very pretty common areas and rooms, very friendly and helpful staff, plenty of hot water, not too far from the centre, and fairly priced. Attention to detail was lacking, could benefit from better cleaning, breakfast left much to be desired.
- Wendy (8/5): It's like living in a museum! - This is the most beautiful place to stay with exquisite traditional design features. The breakfast is perfect and served in the beautiful courtyard. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and went out of their way to be of assistance. Unfortunately, the location is difficult to find - not even taxi drivers have heard of the road and there is no signage. A kettle in the room would have been appreciated.
- Monty (8/5): Very good - Beautiful traditional Tunisian residence in downtown Tunis, walking distance from the city center. Extremely helpful and polite hosts. Rooms are simple but clean and functional. Breakfast was simple but good.
- Akiko (8/5): Very good -
- Jacqueline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (8/5): Become part of the family at the Dar Hayder-la Medina! - The staff were really welcoming and helpful. They were happy for me to check in at 9.30 pm and have breakfast early one day so as to be ready for an excursion. They explained that a TV company was filming at the dar all week and I had the option of moving to the other property they run if I wish. I chose to stay put. I can still hear the director saying, "Action!"
The staff gave me a lot of useful information and arranged excursions for me to the spectacular Roman sites at El Jem and Dougga. That gave me the chance to see a lot more of the country. Youssef and Zainab were my guides for both trips, which were very enjoyable.
The dar is located in the medina-Tunis's old town. When the TV cameras weren't running in the evening, it was really peaceful and quiet. Some of Tunis's historic sights, such as the royal tombs, are a short walk away. There are several restaurants and markets within walking distance. Tunis's 'new town' is a 25 minute walk away through the medina; the Bardo Museum and Carthage are further away.
The views of Tunis from the roof terrace were great!
A very big 'Thank you!' to Khaled, Omar, Youssef, Zainab and everyone else for making my stay so memorable. I think visitors should know that the dar doesn't serve a massive continental breakfast. The croissants, eggs, yoghurt, biscuits, bread and coffee were fine for me.
It didn't matter anyway-most restaurants I visited served meals in very generous portions, so I was soon full up.
I slept OK but the bed was quite hard.
- Ferruccio (8/5): Very good - The atmosphere of the place WIfi
- Faye (7/5): Good -
- chloe (8/5): - Excellent location. Stunning historical building. Beautiful rooms. Quite rustic so dont expect five star furnishings. They offer sarongs instead of towels. The wifi is terrible but its worth it to say in such an amazingly building and stunning rooms. Staff are excellent. Use of small kitchen to make tea if you want it. Great location walking distance from medina sites.
- Qin (7/5): Good - Your experience in this place highly depends on the room you get and the person that receive you.
I changed to a second room after a horrible first night. Everything was great. Comfy bed and warm. The other staff was very kind and very helpful. First night was a nightmare. The room stinks and super cold. The staff that received me was not that willing to offer help and had certain degree of passive aggressiveness. Horrible:(((
- Jamelie (5/5): Very helpful staff & beautiful architecture were the main features of our stay. - Boiler problems caused us to deal with a situation that did not have consistent hot water and heat.
- S_ein_ (9/5): Quality/price very high. Recommended - The guys who run the property were very kind, they helped with everything and gave suggestions. The villa is historic and well kept, the room was spacious and clean. The breakfast is rich and we liked it a lot. Absolutely recommended
- Rohi (1/5): Bad -
- Ilham (6/5): - It is different and interesting, but the cleanliness has much to be desired, the area is dirty. However, the staff are excellent and super friendly.
- Anne (7/5): Really lovely, helpful staff who all went out of their way to give advice and recommendations. - Very beautiful, traditional old medina house. Fantastic, friendly and efficient staff. Good breakfast with croissants or pain au chocolat, good coffee and tea, fruit juice, bread and jam. We were given a single sheet on a double bed so it was not wide enough for 2 people.
The bathroom was not completely clean - there were hairs on the floor and around the basin.
It would have been great to have more light on the roof terrace so we could have been up there reading after dark.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Pärla i gamla stans (medinans) utkant - Otroligt fin pärla.
- Camilla (10/5): Lovely 314 year old house close to the Medina and with great staff - Lovely staff all around: Omar, Khalil, Mohammed and Yasmin were really helpful, nice and friendly. Welcomed us, gave us tips and helped us with whatever we needed. The breakfast was delicious (especially the croissant with dates!) and there was always water available. The house is incredible and rooms are super well taken care of. The only thing it would have been nice to have was a mat in the bathroom. But that is a small detail.
- Laura (8/5): A beautiful and fun hotel - The hotel is in a central position, but one side street, so it is very quiet.
The building is just gorgeous. Some of the rooms have four poster beds or beds with a carved and painted wooden frame.
There is a very big main room to hang out if it is too hot to lounge on the various terraces.
At breakfast, all the guests share a table, so it is easy to connect..
I was very lucky because I met very nice and amusing people during my stay.
Finally, at times, there is a lot of fun stuff going on at the hotel, from yoga on the roof to clay workshop and cooking classes.
- Sandra (8/5): Very good -
- Alexander (9/5): Superb -
- Mathew (10/5): Elegant building with friendly service - Lovely 300 year old building. Roof terrace with a view of the city. Very quiet. Slightly away from the centre but quiet because of that.
- Corinne (10/5): Loveliest staff, extremely well kept and decorated house, with an astonishing rooftop view - So beautiful, so elegant, just looking like a wow All perfect
- Haya khaldoon abed (2/5): Worse Experience - The worse experience ever in my life . In this manipulative hotel .After they agree to change my date of booking when I reach Tunisia they told me they can't and then when I called and my Tunisian friend try to call they closed the phone on my face and their faces . Never come. Check google reviews. Learn how to be honest and how to deal with customers
- Jean (2/5): Very poor -
- Georgios (10/5): Exceptional - It was a beautiful place in the upskirts of the medina. It was very clean and the breakfast was really tasty. I have to give a special mention to the staff that worked the day we arrived and the next one because they were really friendly and helpful.
- Jagoda (9/5): Amazing ! - Dar Hayder is like a little gem hidden on the outskirt of Medina.
Beautiful inside , gently renovated to preserve amazing history of this place .
Very easy go get to and from, friendly helpful staff, when we stayed place was very quiet but when we needed a help there was always someone there.
Lady who looked after breakfast and in general she clean the whole place was very friendly and accommodating.
When we asked her if we can east outside, she with a smile on the face moved our breakfast to the outside space.
Highly recommended.
- Souleye (9/5): Warm, caring, efficient and welcoming - Perfect madam Radia was an absolute star, incredibly gentle kind and friendly! She made me feel at home all the time! Thank you to her!
Also the other staff were very supportive and friendly, Khalil and Mohamed-Anis!
- Carla (8/5): Friendly staff and beautiful house - Staff was friendly, amazing rooftop, breakfast was nice, beautiful house, 10 mins walk to Medina The room wasn’t very clean and location not the nicest area in Tunis
- Mark (8/5): Calm, original and convenient. - This is a fantastic and unusual house to stay in, which rapidly became a home due to the kindness and consideration of the staff. The roof terraces are amazing and the decor unforgettable. We liked the area, with a variety of shops and market. The Dar is a hugely impressive interior but needs some renewal works to fulfil its potential. It does require some modernisation to meet contemporary expectations, however it posseses an outstanding atmosphere.
- Meredith (10/5): - Khalil greeted me and helped so much during my stay! Khaled, the owner, helped find and call places. Really enjoyed the calm elegance and felt like being in a home. I’ll be back inshallah
- Anna (6/5): Pleasant - The location is pretty nice although it was hard to find at night and not really in the nicest part of the Medina. The place itself is absolutely beautiful! The bathroom wasn't clean; the toilet had clearly not been cleaned after the previous guests, and the shower wasn't draining.
- Pola36 (9/5): Really nice hotel - Nice and helpful staff. Small but tasty breakfast! Nothing
- Koen (7/5): Good - Dar Hayder is a beautiful place near the old medina. Very quiet. Friendly and helpful staff. We had a nice stay. Despite its beauty and cosiness the room looked somewhat outworn. Breakfast is basic and the internet connection is terrible (although that's not a big issue to us).
- Patryk (7/5): Good -
- Jesús (4/5): Disappointing - It is a very nice old house near the Tunis medina. The court, hall and bedrooms are well conditioned and with an exquisite decoration. The house is comfortable, the staff at kitchen is kind and efficient and the breakfast is good. All is adequate and good, but... ... but one of the members of the staff betrayed our trust and cheated us without no need to do it. When we paid him for the stay (he said to pay only to him the first day), he said he has no change and he would give us at evening. The next day, he tell us they would give the change next morning, since he could not have it before. The second day, nothing: he wasn't at the house. As we have to leave Tunis, we did explain the situation to other member of the staff, but he couldn't do nothing about it. And, at the end, this change were... 7 TND, maybe 2 dollars: a pittance of no importance, but it was not a question of money, but of deception and a bad attitude. Because of the fault of this man, the opinion about the hotel has changed radically. From two splendid days at the house, we left it absolutely dissatisfied. It has been a pity. If you there, neithe pay the first day nor accept a delay in the return of change.
- Axel (8/5): Great Tunisian experience - Beautiful old Tunisian style house with a magnificent view from the rooftop. The staff was very kind and flexible. The WiFi rarely worked, but good quality when it did work.
- Anas (10/5): One 300 years old structure made of rocks and gave many facilities according to the older styles - You’d treated like a prince The WiFi isn’t reachable from room
- Anselm (9/5): Unique stay in historical house - Great old building. Its lovely and a unique experience to live in an old manison in the medina. Great cozy common areas, nice rooftop with 360 degrees city room.
Room was basic but ok, not luxury room. Good lightening from lamp at bedtable.
Price for a historic house reasonable.
Great breakfast in historic common room.
Very friendly owner and also very nice guy from night shift who helped me to get a taxi to airport
Easy to find with google map For internet, I had always to get signal of wifi at rooftop, thereafter it worked in common area but not in.my room which was a bit away from common area.
Takes some time (30 min) to walk to city ,(avenue Habib Bourghiba), must walk through the basar or otherwise even longer walk along the street. Basar is very dark at night in some corners. But owner said its safe in the empty and dark basar at night
- Jane (8/5): Very good - The location is not safe at night and is run down and full of rubbish. This was the only negative thing about the hotel. The hotel and staff were exceptional and so accommodating. 👌
- Evmorfia (9/5): Very pleasant stay at Dar Hayder. Friendly staff and mr. Khaled accommodated us with organising a tour to the south ! We -
- Judith (8/5): Very good - Was like staying in a museum. Wonderful tiles and stucco. Dodgy street situation.
- Bartosz (8/5): Very good -
- CHUN TONG (8/5): Good Properties in Alleys - The staff are generally very nice especially the maid preparing breakfast to us, she is very attentive.
The properties is inside an alleys, you may not able to park the car in the alleys, someone with very high skill in maneuvering car in alleys may find it ok.
The wifi is not connected to our room, it serves in the common living room where you have breakfast.
Also, you need to ring the bell of main door to gain entry, it is not common to other dwelling.
- Charlie (9/5): Would recommend to anyone who wants to spend their time in Tunis in a beautiful, old, grand house. - An absolutely beautiful hotel just outside the medina. Lavish walls, lavish surroundings and an amazing rooftop. While the WIFI wasn’t the best, the staff were caring and helped us out with our stay enormously. Would recommend to anyone who wants to spend their time in Tunis in a beautiful, old, grand house. WIFI and toilets could have been slightly better, but hey ho.
- Johnny (10/5): Exceptional -
- Courtney (10/5): - Great location for a stay in Tunis! A close 10-15 minute walk to old Medina. Gazzi was a fantastic staff member helping us to book transportation and day tours.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - The building itself of gorgeous and the staff were very warm, welcoming and very friendly.
- Angeliki (10/5): I strongly recommend Dar Hayder to everyone. - Dar Hayder is like a museum! Aesthetics, furniture and decoration are perfect. The hotel took into account a food allergy of one us and adjusted kindly the breakfast. I wish I visit again this beautiful place.
- Paula (10/5): Fabulous location accomadation & amazing people Thsnk you - Locarno is fabulous for the Medina & exploring Tunis Our host Khalid was beyond wonderful He advised us where to visit what to see where to eat and was so helpful Youdsef the taxi driver from airport and then later further on our trip was so kind helpful & caring a total delight! They made our trip exceptional! The hotel is amazing just fabulous in style, history and comfort best sleep ever on a historic palace Breakfast is generous l, loved the eggs Everyone is do fried just enjoy And thank you Nothing it’s amazing a real treat
- Raul (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice Tunisian style interior with unique room layout and good air conditing, simple but delicous breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, strong wifi, rooftop with scenic view of the city. Very quiet. Overall a very pleasant stay. The hotel may be a bit hard to find (located on a small street with only a small sign), location is not ideal, but still only 15 minutes from the medina.
- Lucy (10/5): Exceptional - A beautiful and traditional building with gorgeous relaxation spaces and rooftop
- Elsa (8/5): story of Tunis. - the house is a mansion, precious for wall work, roof work, tiles and floor. it's a jewel, I hope tourist could enjoy the silence at sunset in the patio. just amazing, a jump in the past recommended highly. unfortunately the guest house is located in an area that now is a bit deteriorated. the area is ancient, there's a strong heritage, but several building have been left to degradation. streets are dirty stinky full of rubbish.
- Udyy (8/5): Very good -
- Felix (8/5): Very good -
- Adam (8/5): Beautiful house hotel with great and helpful owner - Nice historical hotel with very helpful and nice owner. Really welcoming The beds are a little hard.
- Hannah (10/5): beautiful restored palace, amazing welcome! - Dar Hayder is an exceptional and lovingly restored palace right on the edge of the Tunis Medina. From the exquisite tiling to the exceptional welcome to the delicious evening meal we had, this is the sort of place you hope to stumble upon but rarely do. Jamil was a wonderful host, clearly passionate about his place and keen to share stories about its history. What a treat. (And they were very happy to have our baby there too!)
- Francisco (6/5): Pleasant -
- Evi (10/5): The place is wonderful and the people even more! It was such a beautiful stay for us, people are really kind and offered -
- Aoife (7/5): Good - Lovely building. Great rooftop views of Tunis.
Breakfast was excellent
Very clean Bed was too hard
Bathroom very small
Quite cold at night but we were there in April.
- Gaia (9/5): Superb -
- Miquelaltadillrovira (9/5): Superb -
- Marina (6/5): Its not in the medina (15 minutes walk from there) the breakfast is horrible and they have old beds - The room was big The breakfast was really poor. In a country were you can find the best fresh orange juices they serve you the cheapest juice from the super market. Also happened with the coffee, they made a horrible brevage and its a really easy thing to find everywhere outside the hotel
- A (10/5): Beautiful old house close to the medina - Dar Hayder is a stunning old house, decorated in traditional style, and we can’t recommend it highly enough.
The room was spacious and charming, with hand painted tiles and walls and a marble sink in the bathroom. The bed was firm but large and comfortable and it was very quiet at night. The house is clearly old, so some of the features (such as the shower) are not in pristine condition, but for us that only added to the charm.
Breakfast was generous and served in a particularly beautiful room from 8-10am. The owner was very welcoming and kindly agreed to serve us breakfast at 7:30am one morning as we had to leave at 8am for a day tour.
We really enjoyed staying in this characterful old house and would recommend it to anyone visiting Tunis.
- Luc (6/5): good but to much money for this stay , there are better solutions in the neighboorhood. - location was good, close to the center and even direct to the highway
area and street very dirty and feel unsafe There is no restaurant, the breakfast I took only once was very poor .
only accept cash money
dirty old room picture on booking.com are taken in the good old days before corona I think.
no change of towels, you must always disturb onwners when you want to take something to drink inside.
- Alexandra (8/5): this was a delightful and charming place. our hosts really kindly cooked a delicious meal the night of our arrival with - it is an unusual and beautiful property.
- Rob (10/5): Exceptional - My hosts were super helpful and accommodating, saving me when my taxi from the airport ripped me off. Breakfast was a treat and my room was a delightful haven I didn't want to leave.
- Yeshna (10/5): Amazing - it’s a beautiful maintain old palace from 17th century with complete Tunisian vibe and atmosphere. the owner really helpful and lovely . I enjoy my stay and love their warm welcome and good hospitality. the room was really good for the price
- Tess (8/5): Very good - Friendly staff and good breakfast, spacious and unique rooms Leaky radiator, need to pay cash only, no locking of doors
- Ghassan (8/5): Very good -
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
