Guest Reviews
- Margaret (10/5): -
- Guest (10/5): -
- tao (10/5): Best hotel experience ever. - The host couple are very friendly and warm-hearted. They offer me free morning tea, soup, and fruit every day, and provide plenty of useful local information. Definately will come back again. None
- Ashleigh (10/5): One of our favourite stays in Japan. The hots were amazing! - It was a beautiful new build with history in its finishings like the 100 year old doors. It was comfortable and a great size. It was a little far from the Nagano train station but still had plenty of things around it.
- Mink Yii (10/5): Stay at this place if you plan to come to Nagano. You won’t regret! - It’s a very cute place, we stayed in the Japanese style room with futons. They were very comfortable with thick fluffy blankets. The toilet and bathroom are what you would expect, clean and functional.
The hosts were very lovely and we had a great time talking to them. They served us soup and coffee in th morning, makes us feel at home which we loved!
Highly recommend. Nothing. Could be a short drive to the main Nagano city but location wise it’s quite convenient with access to supermarket, chemist and some good food options.
- John (10/5): wonderful and the most charming hotel i’ve been in. - the washizawa family are an excellent host and exceptional cooks. i look forward to visiting again in the future!
- Kate (10/5): Very authentic Japanese stay with the most lovely hosts! - The owners were the loveliest people! They were very authentic Japanese and provided a true Japanese experience. From providing us tea and local treats they even gave us a honeymoon gift as we left. This place would be best enjoyed if you have a car as the bus station is a bit of a walk away! Nothing!
- Philippa (10/5): The ideal base for a ski safari from Nagano. A wonderful stay. - This modern inn is extremely comfortable and convenient if you are driving. It's close to large supermarkets and shops and restaurants. The room had every convenience and was attractively designed. The little onsen bath was wonderful after a day skiing. The bonus was the hosts Fumie and Haruhiko, who were charming and very helpful. Fumie provided a delicious homemade soup every morning with coffee and fruit as well as green tea and snacks on our return each day. Haruhiko knew all the ski resorts and could advise which one to go to each day. The perfect stay! Nothing.
- Wen Ding (10/5): A friendly ryokan - The owners are very friendly, suggest things to do, offer breakfast and always seem to look very happy The distance from the station to the house is abit far, you will have to take a bus from nagano station and walk about 15 to 20min
- Miriam (10/5): Beautiful authentic stay - Our favorite accommodation in Japan, without a doubt. The hosts were exceptionally kind and attentive, and their genuine care made our stay unforgettable. We loved both the room and the facilities, but the hospitality was what truly set this place apart. Staying in the traditional Japanese-style room was a beautiful experience.
- Gregory (10/5): The Highlight of my trip to Japan. -
- Salli (10/5): Best stay you'll have ! - Easily the best place I've stayed in Japan
- Iannuzzi (9/5): - The hosts were amazing and caring.
- Oksana (10/5): I would give this place 100 stars if I could. - This stay surpassed my expectations in every way. Shioriya is a traditional styled ryokan with clean modern facilities. Although it is a little out of the way, the bus ride from Nagano station was not difficult and the quality of the accommodation was well worth being a little out of the city. Most importantly (as stated by other reviewers) the couple running the accommodation may be the kindest people you will ever meet. Not only do they ensure your stay is comfortable and clean, they go above and beyond to make your stay extra special, helping out where they can at no extra cost. They offered us a lovely morning tea and breakfast, drove us over to the bus station early in the morning when we had plans to travel, and even planned out a full itinerary with us with fantastic recommendations of activities to do in the area and delicious local restaurants - spoil yourself and trust in this accommodation to make Nagano your favourite place in the world. In addition, they accept luggage forwarding and can help you send luggage to your next location, which makes the journey over to Shioriya that much easier. If we ever come back to Nagano, we will come back here. Nothing at all.
- Rachel (10/5): - Our hosts were so welcoming, kind and helpful. They gave us lots of great recommendations and helped us with transportation - including bus timetables and booking taxis. We were also given a delicious breakfast each morning, consisting of a homemade soup, tea and fruit. The level of hospitality we received at Shioriya is unmatched and we would definitely stay again, despite it being away from the station.
- Javier (9/5): - The guesthouse is very cozy and warm, specially in winter. The staff is very kind and does everything possible to help you with your trip. The guesthouse is a bit too far from the train station, but the staff is so nice that it’s still worth to stay there!
- Jade (10/5): Beautiful, tranquil and cosy. - We absolutely loved our stay at Shioriya! The rooms were comfortable and well decorated, the location was quiet and peaceful, and most importantly, the hosts were absolutely amazing! They went above and beyond to make us feel at home and truly made our stay one to remember. They provided a home made breakfast for us each morning, they gave us a lift to the bus stop so we didn’t have to walk in the cold, they even gave us some candies to keep our energy up when we mentioned we’re visiting the snow monkeys! Please don’t hesitate and book a room at Shioriya! I will definitely be staying there again. Nothing!
- Michal (10/5): Warm hosts, a beautiful room and bath, great breakfast, but small portions. - I had a wonderful experience.
I was happy to be treated with so much warmth by the hosts.
The room I stayed is called Sakura.
There's a bathtub with an automated filling and temperature adjustment with a great collection of amenities.
The room is great quality and I wish I could visit again.
The breakfast is high quality. For a big guy like me, the breakfast was inefficient in terms of amount, however it was very tasty.
- Philippe (10/5): Thanks for the great experience!! - The owners are amazing, the food is so good and they are very focused on enhancing guests experience! So sweet people, very good advices also on attractions and restaurants.
Facilities are practical and very clean No bad surprise
- Darcy (10/5): - My stay at Shiori-Ya in Nagano, was nothing short of fantastic, and I believe it deserves a glowing recommendation.
From the moment I arrived, the hosts, Fumie-san and Washizawa-san, welcomed me with open arms. Each morning, I was greeted in the dining room with a delicious bowl of homemade soup, fresh fruit, and coffee, accompanied by wonderful conversations that started my day on a perfect note. Every evening, Fumie-san helped to prepare my private en-suite onsen, allowing me to unwind in hot water after a day of exploration.
Their hospitality extended beyond the B&B as they provided me with maps of the local community, recommended fantastic nearby restaurants, and offered valuable tips on sightseeing. They even assisted me with local bus and train schedules and personally took me to the bus station. Their attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile truly set them apart as exceptional hosts.
The accommodations at Shiori-Ya are authentic Japanese style, incredibly comfortable, and cozy. My room was equipped with a mini-refrigerator and a fresh bottle of water each day, adding to the overall convenience. The bath amenities were lovely, and the provided slippers and robe added an extra touch of comfort. The communal kitchen area, complete with a microwave and toaster, was a great addition, allowing me to enjoy meals at my convenience.
One of the highlights of my stay was the proximity to the famous Oyaki Farm, where I savored the local delicacy, and the nearby Family Mart, where I indulged in the most amazing Tamago Sando (egg sandwich). The location was perfect for exploring and experiencing the local culture. And Fumie-san taught me Origami, another unforgettable personal highlight.
In summary, I highly recommend Shiori-ya for anyone planning a stay in Nagano. You won’t be disappointed, and like me, you’ll want to return. Arigato Gozaimasu, Fumie-san and Washizawa-san, for your incredible hospitality and friendship!
- Erik (10/5): - A beautiful place to stay with top-notch facilities.
The best thing, however, is the hosts, who are super friendly and gave us lots of valuable tips for places to visit and restaurants in the area.
In Germany, we would say:
„Kann man nicht meckern.“ 😁
Thank you very much, it was lovely.
- Darcy (10/5): Best stay in Japan! The hosts of the property made me feel like family. My room was cozy and comfortable, very authenti - Very cozy and authentic.
- Poorva (10/5): HIGHLY RECOMMEND - The Highlight of the property were the Hotel Owners. Such a loving couple, they made us feel so much at home and very so warm towards us.
We were totally stunned by the cleanliness of the hotel and despite being a small hotel had the most comfortable top notch facilities.
There was everything one needed, right from make up removal wipes to the private onsen feel bath tub.
Even if no breakfast was included in our booking, the couple made us amazing jelly, coffee and soup in the morning. Hospitality was exceptional
The property is a 15 mins ride from Nagano JR station and has everything in the vicinity. The Highway towards snow monkey and togakushi is 5 mins away.
The property has a charm and the owners are a gem.
Highly recommend!!
- Welly (10/5): -
- Silva (10/5): - Amazing welcome. Great breakfast!
The hosts were incredibly welcoming. We were able to talk to them every morning over breakfast (with local fruits and fresh made Japanese soup!).
We also had many tips about the places we wanted to visit, as well as local spots to eat / experience.
I can only recommend this place! One of the great stays we had in Japan.
- Malgorzata (10/5): It was a memorable stay. Thank you. - The hotel is very small, run by family (only 4 rooms). Very clean, everything you may need is provided. Owners are very nice, kind people and help with everything - explain where to go, how to get there, etc. Smart , intelligent people, carrying about their business and customers. Hotel has good location with some restaurants and shops around. You can buy food and cook (the kitchen is provided) or choose restaurant as an option. Hotel is a little bit further from Nagano station, so for me it was a problem as I had a lot of luggage - so the owners was so nice that give me the lift to local station (he needed to wake up at 5 a. m to help me). This was exceptional !!!
- Jennifer (10/5): - The couple welcomed me in like family. Helped me plan my trip and made sure I was able to get the right buses. The room was incredibly clean and comfortable. Such a beautiful property and incredibly peaceful A little far from Nagano station, about a 45 min bus ride away. The host will drive you to the stop in the morning which is so kind
- June (10/5): Wonderful place and wonderful hosts - a memorable part of our trip to Nagano! - We were thoroughly spoiled by our hosts, who treated us like part of the family. The property was a dream come true - comfortable, well-equipped, and with a private onsen/bath! But it was the little things that really made our stay stand out - like the daily morning soup and fruit, and the lollies that were always on hand. Our hosts even drove us to the train station and helped us plan our next destination. We felt so grateful to have found such a wonderful place to stay, and we can't wait to go back. The location was perfect, too. It was close to the foot of the mountains, but still close to public transport with plenty of food options! We don’t have a bad thing to say!!
- Fiely (10/5): The hosts were incredibly accommodating and gracious. I would definitely return to stay here next time I’m visiting Japa - Traditional Japanese style, but recently built. I had a nice time in the warm, personal bath each night.
- Tobias (10/5): - A very nice place to stay. The owners are the lovliest people you can meet. Every day they asked what my plan was and gave suggestions where to have lunch or dinner. The breakfast was delicious. Fresh fruit and a different soup every day.
Arigato gozaimasu for the wonderful days!
- Linda (10/5): Highlight of nagano - A gem in Nagano and the highlight of our trip! The accommodation is beautiful, lovingly decorated, clean, and smells wonderful, we immediately felt at home and were welcomed with tea and a dessert. The hosts are the heart of this place: helpful, warm-hearted, and open. We loved everything
- Roy (9/5): -
- Frennie (10/5): An unforgettable authentic, modern Japanese experience - + The incredible lovely couple that runs Shioriya and their immaculate, well curated home in a blend of modern Japanese and Kumiko style, designed with precision and eye for detail.
+ The hosts came up with many excellent advices for daytrips (Obuse! Togakushi temples! The beautiful Zenkoji temple) and places to eat at walking distance in their neighbourhood. We didn't miss Nagano city at all. If you come by train, take bus 30 at track 3 and get off after 23 min. It's 12 minutes walk to Shiorya. No onsen in the garden;) There was nothing we'd missed.
- Nathan (9/5): Highly reccomended. Really comfortable and wonderful and very friendly & helpful hosts. - What a wonderful little stay this is in Nagano. Mrs Cougar was extremely lovely and helpful and even did our laundry for us while we were out for the day. Lots of advice and pamphlets of things to see around Nagano. Breakfast was small and simple but very nice and a lovely touch. Brewed Coffee and green tea both were very good. Room was very clean and comfortable. A little pokey but very good value with everything provided that you could possibly need. Bed and pillows very comfortable and there was even a mini bath.
Definitely recommended. We very much enjoyed our three nights. I think this is a place that requires a car as its a bit out of the way. They do provide a service to pick you up from the station but we had a car so it was very convenient. A nice free car space just outside the room as well. So for us this was not a negative but for some traveling by public transport possibly it may be.
- MELISSA (10/5): - Our stay here was so wonderful, as soon as we check in, we were given a little snack and tea and met the loveliest couple who run the hotel
They really made our stay a delight - offering us soup and fruit in the morning, the husband drove us to the bus stop (which takes you to nagano station ) in the mornings, and they were so lovely and helpful telling us the best routes to the snow monkey park, telling us the bus times , which time to go etc
Location wise, it is a 20 minute bus to Nagano station.
However it was lovely to walk around the area, there are restaurants and shops and a supermarket close by
The room is also great, we had the Japanese style room. Its clean, has a cosy feel and was actually very comfortable to sleep
We would definitely come here again, it was a real highlight of our trip !!
- Jayden (10/5): Warm and wholesome stay, - Really nice, room very clean and tidy. Hosts are incredibly accommodating and make you feel like family.
They went above and beyond to make the experience incredible.
- Robert (10/5): Lovely hotel, Amazing hosts that go above and beyond. - An absolutely lovely small hotel with the most friendly and helpful hosts ever.
homemade treats and tea on arrival
homemade soup, fruit, and coffee/tea in the morning.
Very helpful assisting with tours and getting to and from the train station.
I stay in many high end hotels for work. skip the fancy stuff in Nagano and come here to stay. It is a little bit outside of the centre of town but well worth it.
Absolutely one of the highlights of our recent trip to Japan. I want to come back to ski now.
- Riccardo (10/5): Relaxing stay in Nagano - The couple running the place is lovely. They make you feel at home from the beginning and they helped us a lot with good tips for places to visits and restaurants.
The place is a bit far from the city centre but you have a direct bus line from train station. We had the tatami room and it was amazing: very comfortable and clean with very nice forniture.
Don’t hesitate to book here, you will love it.
- Chloe (10/5): Best stay! - Our stay at Shioriya was amazing! The owners went above and beyond to make us comfortable and help with planning what to see in the area. The room was exceptionally clean, comfortable and it was a real treat to experience traditional Japanese bath and sleeping on futon. Absolutely loved our stay here and we hope to visit again! Nothing. Everything was perfect!
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional - Great guesthouse in Nagano! The couple who runs it was so helpful, caring and welcoming. They truly made our stay wonderful. They helped my husband and me plan our day trips by providing tips, itineraries and delicious restaurant recommendations. They even drove us to the bus/train stop a few times since we didn’t have a car. Definitely recommend for a small guesthouse with a warm, personal touch :)
- Nuthapol (10/5): Best place to stay in Nagano - Owner have great service mind and very kind. View from the room can see Hakuba Japan Alps in sunny day.
- David (10/5): Couldn't possibly be happier with these wonderful hosts! - I absolutely loved this place. Far from the busy city center, I woke up and went for a walk in the neighborhood and found the surrounding Alps greeting me. My room was a traditional styled room that I adored and especially the tub which is fully automatic and feels like a private onsen. But nothing was as special as the hosts. Hearing that I wasn't going to Nagano train station, Mr. Haruhiko drove me to a different train station , making things very convenient for me. And Mrs. Washizawa is, without a doubt, one of the nicest ladies I have ever met in my life. Words cannot describe the charity of this amazing lady. Thank you! Everything was perfect
- Lori (10/5): I loved every moment at this accomodation and will be coming back! - The hosts are the most amazing part of your stay. I loved the couple as they were so welcoming and friendly. They greeted us like family, and gave us so many recommendations for places to visit each day, good restaurants and shopping. Every morning, they would prepare us a small breakfast with a soup (usually miso), fruit and tea or coffee. They even showed us how to make onigiri, origami and took us to a traditional Japanese wood craft workshop one morning when there were no other guests at the accomodation.
In addition, the accommodation was perfect! The attention to detail is superb. The bedding was clean and made up every day. There is a normal Japanese toilet with bidet function, and good sized shower area. There was a common area kitchenette and laundry (washer and dryer) for guests to use. They have obviously been thoughtful in designing the rooms and there are beautiful accents and traditional elements throughout the accomodation.
I would 100% come back to this accomodation just for the hosts and the wonderful time I had. The location is on the south side of Nagano away from the city centre, but it is easy to use public transport as the hosts can teach you. Or you can hire a care as I did and use the car bay at the accomodation.
- Shannon (10/5): Fantastic! - We had such a wonderful time staying here. I cannot recommend enough! The hosts made it our favorite places we stayed during our 18 day Japan tour.
- Chak (10/5): Exceptional - Cozy, welcoming, and truly home-like! The owners went above and beyond, driving us to the marathon start line and cheering us on during the race. Thank you for your amazing hospitality!
- Katelyn (10/5): Exceptional - Our hosts were so welcoming and joyful. They went above and beyond to make us feel at home :)
- Li-anne (10/5): The couple that runs this place are so lovely and fantastic. Made our stay really enjoyable and we bought them gifts at - Really clean, tidy and free laundry machine available. Really cute and pretty place to stay in with lovely traditional decor and interiors. Amazing hosts. Nothing
- Jade (10/5): The most unforgettable unique stay we've had in Japan with the most welcoming hosts! - Best guesthouse we've stayed at during our trip to Japan. It felt like a warm welcome thanks to the lovely hosts. They gave us everything and more; lovely breakfast with fresh fruit, transfer to the station and always made time for us to help us with everything we needed. We stayed for four nights before heading to Tokio; the perfect way to relax surrounded by beautiful mountains. We want to thank the hosts for everything, we left with a full heart and cannot recommend this place enough!
- Alison (9/5): happy with our stay and the experience! - room size and amenities, welcoming and homey atmosphere, good quality furnishings, enthusiastic and friendly hosts who really go out of their way to take care of you (+thankful for their patience when trying to practise some mediocre Japanese) just a very small point off just for their location - perfect by car, and accessible by local bus or train from Nagano centre/station + a short walk (host was very kind to drive us a couple of times), but just be mindful of the first and last bus or train times especially during weekends
- Christine (10/5): A peaceful getaway - This was my first time solo-traveling and I had an amazing stay here during my 2.5 days in Nagano! I really wish I could’ve stayed longer! The hosts were so sweet and gave me many recommendations to different restaurants and sightseeing locations nearby! The stay may be a slightly far from the bus stop, but I love that it’s a quiet and peaceful location! Great way to get away from the bustling city! They also helped me navigate the fastest way for my journey to Snow Monkey Park! The tea and breakfast was so good and she even gave me candy for my long hike up the mountains! I loved my room and the different amenities (especially the hot bath after a long day)! I definitely recommend this place for solo travelers, couples, or groups! Once I learn how to ski I will definitely be coming back to this stay!
Thank you for being so kind and welcoming! 🤍 Absolutely nothing!
- Jessica (10/5): A lovely host family and the decorations were so tastefully done. - The Hosts were superb. The breakfast meals were wonderful. They sent us back to the USA with some of their favorite treats and a gift for our young daughters. She taught us to make an origami crane. It was easy to find off the bus line from Nagano station and they gave us excellent tour recommendations when we decided to skip skiing due to lack of fresh snow.
- James (10/5): Amazing stay! - We had an absolutely amazing stay at Shioriya. The hosts were incredibly helpful and explained everything in detail, as well as providing helpful tips. Would recommend highly.
- Alexandra (10/5): The blueprint for perfect accomodation - We had the pleasure of staying at Shioriya for only 2 nights, not long enough but long enough to leave a lasting impression. Washizawa-fuufu were the most considerate, generous hosts we have ever encountered and the thoughtfulness they have put into their accomodation is second to none - everything is PERFECT down to the bed linen. Each room is fashioned from a different wood, such as cherry blossom or walnut timber which is a beautiful touch. Our group stayed in both the single and Japanese style rooms and they were very generous and well equipped. The property is about a 20 minute bus ride from Nagano centre but within walking distance to several supermarkets, restaurants (Hama Zushi - best sushi train) and even a Uniqlo. Shioriya is a fantastic base for the wealth of activities in Nagano, including the Snow Monkeys and as a rest stop to or from ski trips in the surrounding mountains such as Hakuba Valley. We already plan to return - it was hard to say goodbye to our beautiful hosts and cannot recommend their hospitality more. 11/10 ⭐️ Nothing!
- Stuart (10/5): A must stay for anyone wanting to connect with Japanese culture and people. - Beautifully appointed, modern, clean and exceptionally comfortable.
- Yen (10/5): Exceptional - The owner couple is super nice and welcoming. I had a great time here
- Myke (10/5): An Unforgettable Stay with Warmth and Heart in Nagano - Nagano City is a stunning place, famous for its local products and as a hub for skiers and travelers exploring the surrounding areas. But what made our trip truly special was this hotel—it’s not just a place to stay but an experience in itself.
The decor is absolutely beautiful, with so much thought put into every detail. From the fresh lilies that perfumed the reception to the quirky collection of local pepper cans (yes, we were obsessed!), every corner felt unique and welcoming. We stayed in a traditional Japanese-style room, which was perfectly equipped and incredibly relaxing—a wonderful way to unwind after exploring.
Although the hotel isn’t right next to Nagano Station, getting around was super easy with frequent buses and trains. On top of that, Mr. Haruhiko went above and beyond, offering to drive us to the nearest station whenever we needed—it’s this kind of thoughtfulness that really sets this place apart.
What truly made our stay unforgettable were the hosts, Fumie and Haruhiko. Their kindness and attention to every guest were beyond anything we’ve experienced before. As a gay couple, we’re often careful when booking accommodations, but their acceptance and warmth made us feel completely at home from the start and all worries were settled.
It’s hard to put into words just how much their hospitality meant to us. They didn’t just make our stay comfortable—they made it memorable in the best possible way. We left with full hearts, feeling truly cared for.
If you’re thinking about booking this hotel, do it—you won’t regret it. Thank you, Fumie and Haruhiko, for an unforgettable stay, we will miss you.
With gratitude,
Myke & Andre Everything was perfect 🙏🏽
- Manmindar (9/5): Haruhikosan and his wife were excellent who looked into our every need. Home away from home. Thank you very much! - Great location - lots of supermarkets and restaurants walking distance. Comfortable rooms - the Japanese futon beds were really comfortable and the rooms had enough space for a couple of large suitcases and smaller bags. All amenities preceded. There was a washing machine and oven.
- Xuan (9/5): Perfect and highly recommended - The couple hosts are extremely lovely and kind, and they went the extra mile to share recommendations for local produce, food specialty, and travelling tips in the area with us. They really made us feel at home. The inn was so well designed, with so much attention to details, from warm wood finishing to intricate decorations. Our room came with heated bath that was perfect after a long day. Breakfast was provided daily with coffee/tea, local fruits and delicious soup. Location was very convenient for us, next to a supermarket and with provided parking. We really enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend this accommodation. Nothing. We love it here.
- Saskia (10/5): 100% recommendation! - One of the best accommodations of our entire trip to Japan!
The owner couple is incredibly kind and attentive. You can really feel that they are hosts with all their heart!
Upon arrival, we were immediately treated to a delicious dessert and tea. Additionally, they provided us with great tips for activities and restaurants near the guesthouse. Every morning, a tasty breakfast was served (soup, fruit, and tea/coffee).
The room itself was perfectly equipped and super cozy – including a bathtub to warm up after a cold day! There are four guest rooms, each with its own bathroom, and a shared kitchen.
From Nagano Station, there is a bus towards the accommodation (about 25 minutes by bus and a 15-minute walk). We would definitely take this route again. :-) During our stay, the host even kindly drove us to the bus stop twice.
Near the guesthouse, there are two large supermarkets, UNIQLO, and a few restaurants (e.g. Ootoya, Hamazushi).
100% recommendation from our side. We hope to stay here again someday! A huge thank you for everything! -
- Farley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Connor (10/5): Please officiate our wedding. - I can’t say enough about the couple running this establishment. They made me and my fiancée feel like family. We had an amazing trip thanks to this lovely hotel and its fantastic hosts. Nothing. It was perfect.
- Laura (10/5): PERFECT - We had two amazing nights at Shioriya. The hosts were so welcoming and warm. Such lovely people. Everything was so beautiful and clean. The breakfast was amazing. There are also good restaurants nearby. We can recommend this place one hundred percent! -
- Stephen (9/5): Superb - One of the most welcoming roykan you could ask for. The owners can not do enough for you. Rooms are clean and spacious. Even though a little way out of town, Did not find it any problem getting into town. Breakfast provided to get you on your way for the day. They even had sightseeing suggestions for us to do and wrote them down for us with times of trains to and from the sight. I would hapily stay there again. They go above and beyond.
- Rain (10/5): Best Place - Every detail was perfect - the bathing facilities, the bed, the amenities, the breakfasts. But I'll always remember Shioriya for the wonderful, friendly, warm, welcoming hosts. They helped me get to all the places I wanted to see and even drove me to the nearest bus stop. From the minute I walked in, I knew I was in the right place. I'll never forget them. I loved everything. The location was about 20 minutes by bus from the station, but it was totally worth it to stay in a place like that. The hosts showed me how easy it was to take the buses around Nagano.
- Poh (10/5): Cosy small hotel run by the loveliest hosts - It's a small B&B with just four rooms, which means it's very quiet and you are well looked after by the owners. Their hospitality was the highlight of our stay, in fact, of our entire trip to Japan. Our stop at Shioriya was part of a longer trip so we appreciated the washing machine and kitchen provided as part of the stay.
We stayed in the Japanese style room which was comfortable and well equipped. I appreciated the bath at the end of each day.
Breakfast was homemade and delicious, Hu made a different breakfast each morning for us during our stay using local produce.
It's located just outside of Nagano City, but with a car we felt it was perfect as it was away from the touristy areas and easy access to the rest of Nagano Prefecture. There are a number of affordable restaurants in easy walking distance from the hotel. Nothing. It was great.
- Ju'eta (10/5): We had a wonderful stay at Shiori-ya and will definitely choose to stay there again if we return to Nagano. - The property was immaculate, and the hosts were exceptionally kind and welcoming. We gained valuable insights into Japanese culture through our interactions with them. The traditional Japanese tatami room was very comfortable and had ample space for our luggage. It’s about 15 mins away from the main Nagano hustle and bustle but we had a car and didn’t mind a little bit of distance. It was nice and quiet. It was still accessible to supermarkets, pharmacy, restaurants and Uniqlo!
- Mckenna (10/5): Exceptional - The Nagano region is famous for Haiku poet Issa, is all I knew before arriving, now it is a beautiful memory of quaint day spas. Traditional Japanese breakfasts cooked by the Hiroshuki family are amazing hosts and Hiroshuki San's wife is an excellent cook. The kitchen for guests is perfect for a micro wave snack or cutting up a salad as well, all utensils are on hand. The pillows and futon and Japanese style sleeping is also very health giving. I enjoyed this stay and my first 10/10. Everything perfect - ehatbkindbofvwlwurdionbuscthis?
- Ang (10/5): Exceptional - The hoteliers are the cutest people, super welcoming and friendly. The stay was extremely comfortable and amazing. They provided simple homemade breakfast every morning of the stay. On top of that, they gave many great recommendations on where to explore in Nagano. The location is not the most convenient, would recommend for those who are renting a car and driving around.
- Anneriek_ (10/5): Exceptional - The house is amazing and the rooms are nice and clean as well. I enjoyed soaking in the bath after a hike. The hosts were very helpful and friendly, they also offered us a ride to the bus stop a couple of times and at the end of our stay to the nearby trainstation. The breakfast in the morning was great with fresh fruits and delicious homemade soup! The location is a bit far without a car, there's a bus stop 10min walk away to Nagano station and the last bus is around 21.00 from Nagano station I believe.
- Beau (9/5): Amazing hosts, great room. - The hosts are amazing and very sweet. They can give some great recommendations at your request and show you around when you need help. We stayed here for three days and the room was very nice. Thank you so much for all your care and help, it truly made our stay at Nagano as special as it could be. The location might be a bit out of the center of the city, but it is an easy busride on line 30 or 37 from Nagano station. Everything you need is closely and it is nice to see What a Japanese neighbourhood is like.
- Keegan (10/5): Lovely cosy stay - Very nice home stay with the two hosts who speak english. House is beautiful and roomy, the hotel section is one section of their home but completely divided. House has very nice traditional styling
Breakfast food and products were all nice local Nagano products
They made us feel very special on our honeymoon even making us a special cake.
The hosts are very helpful especially with the introduction around the house and room and special spa in the bathroom
We would recommend anyone with a car to come stay and check out nagano.
- Andrea (10/5): Wonderful stay with generous and kind hosts - Beautiful Japanese house. Room was self-contained with small kitchen, private bath and toilet. It was also quiet, clean, comfortable and had many thoughtful details.
The house is not in the city centre, but there are ample amenities close by, including 3 supermarkets, ramen, tonkatsu, Japanese sweets shops as well as a kaiten sushi shop popular with locals. There is also an ofuru within walking distance of the house. Nagano Olympic Stadium is about 1km away, and Nagano city is about 20 min by bus.
Best of all, owners Fumi-san and husband are great hosts who go out of their way to make sure guests are comfortable.
A lovely experience in the Japanese suburbs. Nothing
- Chrissy (10/5): Amazing hosts! - The hosts are part of what makes the experience so special. They are very warm and caring people and make sure you feel at home. Breakfast was amazing and the room was clean and comfortable.
We had an amazing stay!
- Steven (10/5): We had a great time and would recommend this place to any travellers who want to Nagano and surroundings. - Very homely, clean and newly renovated but still had a traditional Japanese feeling.
- Michelle (10/5): Authentic local cultural experience, best hosts one can ever find, a best-kept secret ! - - Great location near restaurants, shopping (Big Japanese pharmacy / cosmetics shop, Uniqlo).
- Super friendly and wonderful hosts - so thoughtful and kind, made the stay extremely special and intimate, an exquisite cultural and Japanese hospitality experience. Hosts made excellent recommendations daily to curate our travel itinerary to various tourist spots within an hour’s drive away.
- Bonus: the rooms are equipped with a spa tub for Nagano water baths
Wished we stayed much longer ! We already plan to return ! Not much
- Matilda (10/5): Exceptional - I cannot recommend booking this property strongly enough!! Easily the best place I have stayed in Japan. The hosts are so kind and generous, helping you organise your day or giving you lifts to the station or bus stop. Every time I came home they greeted me with a hot drink and small snack and even taught me origami by the fire one afternoon. The space itself is so beautiful, I will remember this stay for the rest of my life!
- Joshua (10/5): Amazing hosts, beautiful design, spotless and comfortable - Everything. The hosts were fantastic and kind and had lots of good recommendations for the area. Their welcome treat was delightful and tasty, and the breakfast was small but very good. The interiors are beautiful and new, and there is no smoke smell, which is hard to find in a lot of places in Japan. There are only a handful of rooms, all quite spacious by Japanese standards, and all very well equipped. It's a perfect fusion between traditional Japanese style and international comforts. We would return without hesitation and recommend it to everyone. Book ahead! Nothing. The stay was perfect.
- Niklas (10/5): The owners are probably the nicest people I’ve met in Japan. The rooms are very clean, spacious and comfortable. They co -
- Ping (10/5): Exceptional hospitality! - The hospitality of the owner couples are amazing. Drove us to nearby bus stop and train station two times during our short stay. Not sure about you, but I have never had the host offered and actually washed my muddy shoes after hiking. We were welcomed with delicious tea and dessert, had also free breakfast. My friends are vegans, the owners were able to accommodate them. They definitely went above and beyond to host us. The whole place were very nicely decorated with a lot of antique pieces as owner have told us. Rooms were very clean. We loved our stay and highly recommend this place!
- Rositsa (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were extremely friendly and went above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable. They offered us tea of arrival, gave us some tips on where to go, what to see and what to eat. Every morning they offered us "coffee time", where they also gave us a soup and some fruits, despite not officially offering breakfast. The house is also absolutely stunning!
- Frances (10/5): This stay will be a highlight of our trip because of the wonderful hosts. - Very comfortable accommodation and friendly hosts who looked after us like family. Glad we hired a car as a fair distance from Nagano centre.
- Hiroshi (10/5): Exceptional - We have never received such a warm welcome as at this place. The hosts were not only very friendly and accommodating, but also extremely warm and helpful. They helped us with valuable tips, treated us with a small breakfast, fine tea and snacks and supported us in various matters. The rooms themselves are beautifully furnished down to the smallest detail and very clean. It was just perfect! We were very sad to have to say goodbye to the two hosts. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this place to everyone. It is definitely worth a stay!
- Erin (10/5): Lovely host who went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and add in a personal and homey feeling! - Gorgeous property! Beautifully designed with modern and traditional styles. Accommodations were comfortable and had everything we needed. It was a little far away from Nagano station, which was not a problem at all. Just something to be aware of if you plan to in and out of the city a lot during your stay.
- Katrina (10/5): The best place we stayed in Japan. Hosts are INCREDIBLE and we cannot rave about them enough. -
- Hidemi (10/5): I loved Shioriya, I'll come again! - I absolutely LOVED Shioriya. The owners were friendly, kind and beautiful people. They gave me lots of advice on places to see, how to get there, where to eat etc. The room was immaculate and in pristine condition. Really clean and comfortable. I was very well looked after. Nothing.
- Tabashshum (10/5): Wonderful -
- Morgan (10/5): Exceptional - Such a cozy and comfortable stay. Our stay exceeded our expectations. Our hosts went above and beyond to make sure we had a perfect stay. I couldn’t recommend this property enough. I can’t wait to come back as I will definitely be staying here again. Absolutely nothing. Everything was perfect
- Will (10/5): The epitome of hospitality. - Incredible space. The best blend of traditional Japanese lodging and modern amenities. These hosts are above and beyond. They are the epitome of hospitality. Wonderful snacks and breakfast. They really cared about me and my trip, they made it as easy as possible to see the snow monkeys on a quick 2 night trip. They provided rides to make my stay as economic as possible.
I love this place and am certain it is the best around. Nothing. This was an incredible stay and definitely the best way to stay in Nagano to see the snow monkeys.
- Jessica (10/5): Highly recommend! - It’s beautiful! The Japanese architectural details are so lovely. I learned a lot about the hotel and the design. The history of furniture in their family. The husband and wife who run Shioriya are so kind and welcoming. They went above and beyond. It was truly a great place to stay. I started my day smiling with them every day. It’s a little away from the main town and transportation but it’s totally worth it. And they helped take me to the bus and station.
- Salem (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vivien (10/5): Perfect Japanese home stay style small hotel/bed and breakfast. - Stay here it will really enhance your Japanese travel experience. The most perfect four room hotel in a newly built beautiful Japanese home. The hosts are warm and welcoming. It’s like staying with a favourite friend or relative. It reminded me of staying with my grandmother when I was a little girl, they were so attentive and helpful. The rooms are warm and comfortable and impeccably clean. The breakfasts were the best food I had in Japan. Fresh local fruits and delicious home made soups. Off street parking and local bus and train transportation. Lots of helpful advice on attractions in and around the Nagano area and how to get there. (We loved the ‘snow monkeys’!) There are large grocery stores just around the corner and a lovely kitchen to use to prepare meals as well as local restaurants. Watch the kids walk and bike to school along the quiet street in front of the house and then catch an easy bus to Nagano Station to explore further afield.
- Jacqueline (10/5): The best stay of our trip to Japan with the best hosts ever! - Everything a beautiful house and a super room with everything you could need and more including a super Japanese bath. But most of all the hosts were simply the best! They were so welcoming, kind and generous. We would come here again just to stay with them. From the minute we got there to the moment we left they made us feel very special.
If you can fit this lovely little place into your itinerary do, you won’t regret it. Nothing everything was perfect.
- Stephen (10/5): Owners are friendly people! - The owners are very friendly people. They both did everything they could to make my stay as pleasant as possible.
They helped me plan my activities in Nagano and even give my a lift to the bus stop and train station!
The room is comfy and clean and the breakfasts soup are delicious!
- Mikhaila (10/5): This spot was so cute and charming! - This spot was really lovely! The owners running the place are clearly so passionate about hosting travelers. They went out of their way to make me comfortable. They were so kind with recommendations and little snacks/treats. The room itself was also perfect and a great size. Overall a great value for the money. everything was great
