Guest Reviews

- Corinne (8/5): Great experience with very friendly hosts - Very original guesthouse and as I was the only guest there I had plenty of space just for me! With 6 people might be a little tight I suppose
Guesthouse host and his wife are very friendly, helping you in finding the good spots of Yukushima and providing you with bus schedules and detailed explanation to yakusugi trail! They also gave me twice roasted potatoes which was really good! Oishi !!!! Thanks a lot again! Location is a little too close from the road but for me it was ok !
- KANA (8/5): - 6人部屋?が2人で貸切でした。
お風呂には湯船もあり、疲れた体を癒すことができる。
オーナーさんが、バスの時刻など、いろいろ教えてくれるので良かった。

- Aaron (10/5): - Daichan was extremely helpful, explaining bus routes and details of my intended itinerary
- daisuke (10/5): -
- Seiya (10/5): -
- Annie (10/5): Thank you so much Milan!! And your phenomenal wife💗 - Privacy, kitchen !
- Dimple (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - Mikun was really kind and made sure we understood how everything worked. He gave us snacks when we were tired after walks.
It was very clean and the beds were very comfortable.
- Baudrez (10/5): Exceptional - The owner explains me everithing i need to know for my hike.
I was alone in the yourte.
Very good Hostel
- Lucie (10/5): Great for a short stay; host made the experience. - Location was great, host was incredibly kind, friendly and generous. Host was definitely the highlight.
- Mitch (9/5): Worth it just for the host. - Amazing host. We'll priced especially if you are more than 1. 6 beds in the yurt so cheap for a group. Maybe a chair in the yurt.
- Hannes (10/5): Amazing stay that fits very nicely into what Yakushima is as a place - A stay as special as the island with a host that will anticipate your every need.
Very good value for the money it costs.
It is not so easy to get there so a car is kind of needed to stay here! Nothing really, its on the cheaper side of accomodations so it met and exeeded the expectations.
- Daniel (7/5): Roughing it in style and with solid local help - The man who runs it was incredibly helpful, he took me to the store, tourist center and the bike rental shop in his car. He doesn't speak any English so all communication is done via voice to translation on his phone. He does make a lot of jokes which are hit or miss.
- Christine (9/5): Comfortable - Dai-chan was super kind and helpful. He had thought of everything and was a lovely host ensuring we knew all necessary information for our stay. Thank you for our stay.
- Soren (9/5): Superb -
- Yas (7/5): Great Hospitality, Good Cost Performance - We chartered one of the two mongolian-style gers for four nights.
Air conditioner is turned on for two hours with a 100-yen coin. However, the host left us a dozen of 100-yen coins, so we could use it for free throughout our stay!
We could also use the laundry machine for free, which was very helpful for long-stay visitors like us.
Water pot, water heater, free tea bags, sugar, paper cups and spoons in the ger allowed us to enjoy tea time anytime we wanted.
Toilet, washstand and bath are in the separate building next to each ger. They are very clean. You can easily approach there even at night thanks to the sensor lights.
On a cold night, the owner’s wife kindly brought us Yu-Tanpo (Japanese traditional hard plastic container filled with hot water to set inside the futon). On a hot afternoon, she gave us chocolate sherbet. Of course, with no fee.
Afterall, Dai-chan house is one of the most reasonable options with great cost performance in Yakushima. Even though we continually turned on the ventilating fan, the ger room had a smell that was particular to the humid environment, so each time we came back to the ger, we had to leave the entrance door open for a few minutes to ventilate the room.
- Sotto (10/5): Stay here or suffer. - Do you have a hard time getting around Yakushima island? That bus route and schedule looks a bit confusing huh? Or maybe you just have no idea where to go to see all those beautiful hikes & points of interest. Or you’re probably starving as you stand outside the A-Coop as the Toppy leaves you on a cold desolate island… if you stay here at Daichan House you’ll learn that it’s not that complicated and that the island is actually warm and at times heart-filled with the joy that these hosts provide.
I highly recommend staying here on your first days. Mr. Daichan man threatened me at first (jokingly) that he would steal my girl. And he was darn smooth with it. Upon arriving there he not only roasted me and made my fiancé laugh a lot, he then rushed us into a car (dare I say without a choice) to drive us to prepare food because we told him that we wanted to hike the following day without preparing meals. This wasn’t supposed to even be on his booklet he was explaining to us that showed everything on the island! He is that kind!!! Even ran into the store to make sure all the food wasn’t taken for us 🥹 ~ add along detailed trail maps, bus stop numbers, the corruption of money swindling (ohhh yeah you know it!), beautiful photos of recommended spots, where to get food, what time, even how not to have fatal / high risk injuries on your mountaineering. This man literally provided it all on top of humor. A true underrated blessing. Stay with him to gain knowledge and learn your way around the island, or suffer staying at a $100 cottage with a guy (you know who you are) who only tells you to not damage property and leave you out in the cold when you need help or guidance on a land that can at times be harsh in weather but warm in the hearts of Daichan man.
Don’t let all these fancy overpriced places fool you just like the corrupt people that took over 3 million yen from the island’s funds to gamble. Your stay will be just another stay.
- Etienne (10/5): Exceptional - Daichan is very kind and willing to share a lot of interesting stories.
He helped me getting around Yakushima Island and showed me the interesting spots.
He has also been very reactive when my ferry got cancelled and I did not know what to do.
The tent and the bed were very comfortable, which I wasn't really expecting!
There are lots of pictures and documents scattered around the facilities which gives plenty of charm and personality to this place.
I can not recommend it enough!
- Ben (8/5): Very good -
- Chepkevych (4/5): In sum, although the place is cheap, private, and nicely allocated, I advise potential guests to consider risks of aggre - I would like to leave an objective review to Daichan’s House. I highly advise people who would stay there to read my review because the host has lots of old reviews that do not reflect the current conditions.
From positive, it is cheap and the jurt is private. The location is not far from Anbo, which is a nice location on the South of the island. Also, the host has helped us to orient with the bus schedule (even though calling us sandals, and telling who was raped, we should be very careful, and who grows grass down the road) and has left two guiding books with interesting information about island, restaurants nearby, and busses. The host has as well driven us to supermarket on the first day, thanks him for that. On the contrary, there are issues with facilities and hosting.
I would like to begin with the fact that while on Booking it is stated that all facilities are included in the fee, by arrival Daichan informed us that we have to pay to use airco as a heater, there is amount to pay for two hours of airco. The jurt does nit hold the heat, and by my observations, the temperature is only a couple of degrees warmer than on street, so either you have to pay for airco, on choose not to and take two blankets.
The jurt is relatively clean, besides there was a big cockroach, which I guess is a general problem on island. Also, consider that only two pillows of six are normal- the other four are bags of plastic cut tubes that hurt head.
The bathroom is shared and old. I must share an indicative story with the host that happened with regard to bathroom and treatment of guests. One morning we woke up and went to brush teeth, then my girlfriend smiled and said hello to the host. He immediately started blaming her in breaking door in bathroom. He has been shouting and screaming, accusing her of breaking the door, and pointing that she did it because last night he heard “noises in the bathroom.” I went outside, he was shouting at my girlfriend and threatening her to call the police and report us to booking for breaking his property. We did not understand why he was blaming us, and then we went to see what happened (we hurried for bus because they are irregular from his place, his scandal was very uncomfortable to us, besides false accusations). In short, the door fell, and he was in anger on us, keeping blaming and shouting because he heard noises. Our words were completely disregarded and he kept threatening us with police. My girlfriend checked what was wrong with it, it turned out to be an opening sliding fin (there are four in total) that was broken on a verh ols foldable shower door-curtain.
- Alejandra (8/5): Very good - Very close to a bus station and very hospitable staff. They explained in detail how I could get to all the places I wanted to see and even drove me to the atm, information office, and grocery store. I was the only person staying in the hostel so if you want to meet more people this might not be the best place.
- Gergely (8/5): Very good -
- Bayurbatov (10/5): Exceptional - Mr. Daichan was really kind, we missed the last bus and he picked us up at the airport. He also provided a lot of information about the area and hiking. No WiFi. But it was no problem for us
- Ann (10/5): Exceptional -
- Samantha (10/5): Best guesthouse I stayed in Japan! - Daichan was the kindest host, he gave such detailed instructions to get to the guesthouse when I was still new to Yakushima! As a solo traveller relying on public transportation, he drove me to the supermarket and restaurant, ensuring I was well-fed not just that night but for the next day as well :") Especially during the Obon season, when many restaurants were closed, he called in to help me check if there was anywhere I could have dinner at. Daichan also planned the entire route for my next day, complete with bus timings, which bus stop to wait at, and suggestions for what to do if I had extra time!
As for the room, it was my first time staying in a yurt, which was extremely comfortable! The air-conditioning ensured a good temperature despite the rain outside. I also had a television which I could watch. I wish I did not book another place and could stay in this guesthouse longer :")
- Emilie (1/5): never again - yourte, love mongolia and the yourtes for having been there and lived in one the owner was very contemptuous/disdainful to us, giving us lessons, bossy and unnice
upon our arrival in had to pay the room in cash and ended up with my 2 kids almost without cash in the evening in a zone were everything is to be paid by cash and there is only one cash withdrawal at 40 mns walking distance from the place at the post office but only open during office hours so closed after we paid
it ended up impossible to rent a car so we had to walk under the heat for 30 mns one way to find food and couldn’t visit anything
- Andrea (9/5): Superb - Daichan is a great host! He was really helpful on the organisation of our trip on Yakushima Island. He has created 2 booklets with his family about all the best from the island including the ways of getting there with the public transport (which was SUPER helpful as the buses don’t run that often). The yurt are really comfortable. AC has a separate cost of 100 yens per 2 hours but otherwise fans are included in all tents. All the installations were really clean.
- Basil (10/5): Very cool to sleep in a yurt! Nice and helpful staff - Very nice and helpful host!
- Lauri (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nathaniel (9/5): Superb -
- Viivi (9/5): Superb - wonderful host, who planned my followung day and gave great recommendations!
- Youa (10/5): It was an awesome experience. - We loved that he was very informative about the hike and everything about the island. Not much could had been better.
- Sophia (10/5): Daichan House is a unique accommodation that was an invaluable part of our Yakushima experience. - This was my first time staying in a yurt, and Daichan House did not disappoint! Although we arrived well past sunset, Daichan was very energetic and friendly. After showing us around the property, he gave a little history lesson on Daichan House as well as Yakushima. He prepared a laminated booklet with photos and English descriptions. It was fun to talk with Daichan, which we probably did for over an hour. The yurt and shared restrooms were well-maintained. Free hot water, tea, coffee, and a local mikan orange were also provided :) Nothing, but I will note that the air conditioning unit is coin-operated.
- Isabel (10/5): Exceptional service and genuine kindness from the owners - Absolutely exceptional service from the owners - there was an issue with double-booking as we booked very last-minute on the day due to a change in personal circumstances but the owners were kind enough to provide us with makeshift camper beds in their own living room as it was already 8pm (and completely dark) and alternative accommodation was essentially impossible. They provided us with exceptional service despite our last-minute booking mistake and really went above and beyond. Cannot recommend their place enough BUT PLEASE BOOK PROPERLY AHEAD OF TIME (don't make the same mistake as us!) Nothing
- Saurabh (10/5): Exceptional - The owners are very friendly. As I didn’t have a car they would help me schedule my day with bus timings one day before which was very cool. They would also drive me to and back local restaurants in the evening and the recommendations have been on point.
- Mikolaj (10/5): 面白い! - Oh my god, this stay was big fun times! Dai Chan is very funny person. He might look like an older person but in the heart he is in his 20s! He teached me some Japanese history, his origins and what to do in the area. He drived me to my rent a car place, hang my laundry when I forgot it and was happy to have some conversations together. Really recommended!!!
- Monica (8/5): Very good -
- Jan-mikael (8/5): A good stay with a very welcome host. Could be improved with some better common areas for guests and amenities like hot - Very good beds. Very clean. Lacked a place to sit down. No common room. A hot water kettle would have been very helpful.
- Tim (9/5): Recommended! - Daichan was super kind and helpful!
The place is charming, good value for the price, especially considering the help received - I was even driven to dinner! Lower bunk is very shallow so not easy to sit up for tall people.
- Solveig (3/5): Very strong smell inside - Everything was functionnal and clean. Toilets seemed to be cleaned everyday. Please note that I am used to camping and don't mind simpler accomodations and that I didn't pick this accomodation because it was cheap.
At some point my brother left the room and I ended up alone with the owner and I got really uncomfortable when he told me his age and that everything was still working fine except for his private parts... I had barely talked the whole "conversation" before and did not ask for anything. This and other small comments made me feel uneasy as a woman even though I like to think it was harmless.
There was a very strong smell outside and inside the yourt, probably a combination of insect repellent, humidity and mold. We found that keeping the aircon on the whole night helped for the smell, temperature and humidity so we paid 100yen/2 hours each of the 3 nights.
Sometimes, outside the tent smelled like the toilets flooded.
The yourts are a couple of meters away from the main road so you hear the cars and trucks passing by starting from 5-6am.
So yes, the owner and his wife are obviously trying their best by offering hot water and snacks (and tours to some of the guests) but to me, it did not make up for everything else that I listed
- Zoe (10/5): An incredible experience - Daichan is an incredible host. He took time to show me around the island and with information you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere. He also took time to thoroughly describe hiking roots and how to reach them at my arrival. Both him and his wife were extremely welcoming, cooking me food and treats during my stay, his wife even brought me a hot water bottle on a cold night. Daichan also drove me back and to onsen and restaurants when the busses had stopped running. The most lovely man, with a kind and warm heart, so sad I couldn’t stay any longer! Nothing to say
- Robert (9/5): Superb - The owner has wealth of knowledge of bus times, what to do, I just told him how long I had he provided itinerary. Without his help I definitely would of missed the outdoor ocean olsen which really was a highlight to me.
The property is basic, clean, comfortable, on bus route for Island. Nothing all was all good
- Massimiliano (9/5): Superb -
- Veronika (9/5): Superb -
- Slanzi (8/5): Very good - The owner was really friendly and helpful. Even with less english skills he explained everything in detail and gave us many recommendations. The house is close to the bus station and also for the car there was a lot of space. The place was an adventure but still comfortable. The room only had a small table inside but we still got the whole "tent" with 6 beds so we can't complain.
- Lena (9/5): Authenic Experience - The service was really good. The owner took half an hour to talk to us and explain things. He explained some interesting facts about Yakushima and so on. This is just a different experience and you should accept it as such. It might not be a hotel, but it was a pleasant experience looking back. I recommend it. The bathroom could have been a bit cleaner, but it's not bad at all. The owner was so nice that it was a bit too much, but he definitely tries very hard.
- Dom (9/5): Superb - Daichan talked through everything that needed to be known in preparation for the trails. The location is perfect for those who do not have a car. His knowledge and time coupled with the very reasonable price makes this stay all the more attractive. I wish I could have stayed longer
- Marc (6/5): Pleasant - Owner was very keen on helping, which is a good thing but annoyed me at some point
- Gwendal (7/5): Good - The helpless of the hosts
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional - Daichan House is an incredible place to stay at, and if you're going to Yakushima and plan on staying somewhere budget friendly I could not recommend it more. It is cash only, as is most of the island, so beware of that upon coming, but other than that Daichan is an incredible host, and getting to know him is an absolute joy :> No real complaints, for its price this is a wonderful place to stay at!
- Rio (9/5): Superb -
- Kristine (9/5): Great stay in Yakushima - Comfortable beds, everything is very clean, very nice hosts.
- Jakub (10/5): gangsta owner - owner insect
- Antho (10/5): Exceptional - I had a wonderful time staying at Daichan house.
The host helped me finishing my hiking plan. Drove me to the nearest grocery store and also helped me to buy the correct bus ticket for Jomon sugi hike. Again, thank you very much !!!
The accomodation on itself was perfect for me : It's clean and quiet.
I recommend this accomodation for any travelers in Yakushima !
- Liu (10/5): hilarious - The host was absolutely lovely. He spent 2 hours talking to us to make sure we were well prepared for the Jomon Sugi hike. Despite the language barriers, he patiently worked through all our questions with some google translating.
As a bonus, he even taught us how to commit ritual seppuku :))
- Rburberry (10/5): Hosts go the extra mile for you - The room is quite spacious and has everything you need! The staff are very very helpful, having compiled an entire booklet on local attractions and they will sit with you to help you plan things. They also are willing to drive multiple guests to local food places. If you're someone who doesn't want to be disturbed during your stay, this place isn't for you. Be aware there's no 24H convenience stores like Seven Eleven or Family Mart on the island.
- Tim (10/5): wonderful owner family and welcoming behavior. - it’s pretty good compared to the prices. nothing special that I did not like.
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional - For its price, Daichan House is a wonderful place to stay for anyone looking to spend a lot of time hiking in Yakushima. Daichan himself was incredibly nice and took great care of me, even driving me to the supermarket to help me prepare for my hiking trips. Without his help, advice and preparation, I would not have had nearly as much of an amazing trip as I did. The location is barely a 20 minute walk to the bus bound for Arakawa, which has an incredible trail that is definitely worth exploring. Seriously consider booking here if you come to Yakushima! I would say the one thing that was a bit of an inconvenience was the AC/Heating unit. You have to pay 100 yen for every 2 hours of use for it, and while it did an amazing job at heating the room I found myself lacking 100 yen coins a couple nights which was unfortunate. Not too big a deal but worth mentioning.
- Philine (10/5): Unique experience - I had a really good time staying at the Daichan House. The owner was so kind. I was the only one and it was raining. Because I didn't have a car, the he drove me to the supermarket and showed me some very beautiful waterfalls. My highlight was the onsen right next to the ocean 😍 I will never forget this experience for sure. I will come back for sure!
- Ksangati (7/5): Budget accommodation to explore Yakushima trails. - The host is very friendly and will share a lot of information. The location is very convenient to reach major walking routes and close to the supermarket and restaurants. Since there aren't many people staying at any time, the facilities are always available to use. Other reviews complain about accessibility but anything on Yakushima is much easier with a rental car so I don't think this is an issue with the house. There are too many beds in the tent (3 bunk beds), which leaves little space for anything else and the beds themselves are a bit difficult to get in and out of.
- Erina (8/5): Very good - Daichan did a phenomenal job of making sure that I could use the public transportation correctly in order to reach the destinations I wanted to reach. Overall clean, and easy to use all amenities.
- Narayan (9/5): Superb -
