Guest Reviews
- Angie (10/5): - I made the right choice to stay here. One of the best experience I had in Kyoto, I wished I booked more than a night. The staff were very welcoming and courteous, they gave me a 5 star service. The room, actually it was more of a suite, was clean. I felt like I was in a different world when I was there because of the set up/ambiance. They also have a great location, just right beside the shrine.
Just don’t bring heavy luggage because of the stairs, I felt bad that they carried my heavy luggage for me. Also, not their fault, the GPS made walked around the shrine when the hotel was just located almost in front the bus stop.
- Jeff (10/5): - If you are looking for a traditional ryokan experience, then this is the ryokan for you. The ryokan provided comfortable yukata for guests to wear including to breakfast and the kaiseki, hosted in a beautiful restaurant with views of the garden. The traditional Japanese breakfast (included in price of stay) was different and delicious each morning, and the kaiseki was a unique experience, although expensive. The tatami beds were comfortable and the barrel style tub in the room was delightful. The only drawback of the room was that parts receiving sunlight (vanity, couch-seating area) were very hot when we visited (100+ degrees F in late July), so it required some adjustments with the doors and AC. One thing to note for Westerners - you need to take off your shoes in the lobby and put on wooden sandals and then do another change into slippers provided by the hotel before walking up the stairs to the rooms and then take off your shoes before entering your room. It makes for a tricky walk up and down the steep stairs with limited hand railings. The onsen was small, but high quality with an infinity style tub. The staff were very accommodating and patient with clumsy westerners
- Jennifer (10/5): - I loved the traditional room (although my husband would have liked a western chair). The owners and staff were super friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were amazing!
- Cristiane (10/5): Imersão na cultura japonesa! - ESPETACULAR!!!! Indico 1000 vezes!
- Lisa (10/5): - My niece and I stayed here for one night to experience a traditional Japanese hotel. The staff were very attentive and accommodating. The room was very comfortable. The ryokan is within walking distance of many sights. I would highly recommend staying here!
- Celine (10/5): - The staff are amazing, very helpful and informative and friendly. Definitely a more unique experience where they help you get the most out of it! Even the traditional style beds were actually more comfy than some of our more western hotels we stayed at!
- Albert (10/5): - A good place to experience a traditional Japanese Hotel. The place was top notch. The staff and the service they provided were beyond 5 stars. And the Breakfast was to die for.
- Saskia (10/5): - it was my first time travelling solo and the staff at yuzuya ryokan took great care of me! they explained the general rules of staying at a ryokan, welcomed me on my first morning for breakfast which was beyond delightful! with a wonderful view of the little garden with a waterfall i got to wake up, eating a delicious and big, filling breakfast. they helped me with any question i had and i wish i would've stayed longer.
the location is smazing since its directly next to a big, beautiful park with various shrines and temples, foodstands and more!
i hope that i can return one day!
- Frank (10/5): - Beautiful property and amazing food. The staff is highly attentive.
- Lucille (10/5): - A perfect place to slow down and meditate.
- Racheal (10/5): Fabulous stay - Loved this place!
The staff are amazing - super friendly and helpful.
The food is great and so much of it
The beds are comfortable and everything is beautifully maintained
Highly recommend
- Mark (10/5): TRUE GEM IN GION - A fantastic and authentic place right in the heart of Gion and next door to the yasaka shine. Everything about it is considered and beautiful. A true gem in Kyoto. The breakfast is epic. Kimono’s suppled by the ryokan can be worn around the property which is a nice touch. Staff as amazing.
- CHRISTINE (10/5): - Good location although hard to find at first as the entrance is a doorway on a main road. Steps up were difficult with our suitcases. Lovely inside and very attentive staff. Room was lovely and beds very comfortable. Wooden bath was unusual but worked fine. Had a Japanese style breakfast in the restaurant which was beautifully presented. Good experience but expensive compared to local hotels.
- Alex (10/5): - What a wonderful experience! Above and beyond what I expected from a traditional ryokan. Friendly and accommodating service, incredible breakfasts, perfect central location for our first visit to Kyoto. We were a little concerned about sleeping on a futon but it couldn’t have been more comfortable. Highly recommended if you’re looking to stay at a ryokan.
- Natalie (10/5): Impeccable - Customer service was amazing, rooms were beautiful, breakfast was luxurious, perfect location, and onsen was great. I would recommend this ryokan to anyone (unless you have mobility issues/physical disabilities due to the stairs).
- Stephanie (10/5): A peaceful sanctuary in the heart of Gion - Yuzuya Ryokan was one of the highlights of our stay in Kyoto. The service was unbelievable - they stealthily kept our room clean and supplied with fresh water, tea, and snacks at all times without being seen (like ninjas!).
The Japanese breakfast included in our stay was phenomenal (a spread way too big to finish), and they even offered us an "American Style" breakfast as an alternate option for variety. The restaurant is peaceful and gorgeous.
The staff was friendly and helpful (upon checkout, they carried 3 suitcases and 5 bags from our room to the street in less than 2 minutes).
We stayed during the winter months and always walked into a cozy entrance with a heater and incense giving us a warm welcome home.
Lastly, you cannot beat the location - RIGHT next to the entrance of Yasaka Shrine, and steps from old town Gion (we spotted 4 geishas on our first night). Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
- Antonio (10/5): - Great experience, and the treatment of staff was excellent, I really enjoyed my stay there
- Laura (10/5): - Todo excelente tienen una gran atención
- Yifan (10/5): - Excellent service and wonderful kaiseki breakfast and dinners. Location extremely convenient near many shrines, temples, dining, shopping, transportation. Only downside is facities are on the older side and air conditioner is loud and always on in the room during the summer.
- Jason (10/5): - Great attention to detail and very helpful staff. Great first time experience especially with the dinner and breakfast options.
- C (10/5): Not to be missed - Fantastic stay steeped in Japanese tradition. Rooms beautiful, welcome wonderful, beds comfortable. Breakfast was amazing, prehaps a bit too much for 2 teenagers, but still amazing and delicious regardless.
- C (10/5): Not to be missed - Fantastic stay steeped in Japanese tradition. Rooms beautiful, welcome wonderful, beds comfortable. Breakfast was amazing, prehaps a bit too much for teenagers, but still amazing and delicious regardless.
- Paul (10/5): - Staff service and Ryokan rooms are fantastic.
Japanese Breakfast is five stars.
- Erika (10/5): - Amazing stay.
- Danilo (10/5): - The food is excellent, the location is perfect.
- Yumi (10/5): - Artisinal authentic Japanese ryokan with superb yuzu themed food! Central location and lovely well-maintained property! Warm hospitality! Check dinner times since we almost missed ours..
- Jaime Ryan (10/5): Surpassed my expectations - Great location, beautiful property, and tremendous food. The staff was tremendously helpful and had great senses of humor. Would stay again in a heartbeat.
- Terry (10/5): The best ryokan experience in Kyoto - We had the most wonderful stay at Yuzuya Ryokan, it provided the true traditional ryokan experience from beginning to end. The staff are so friendly and always willing to help and look after us. The room was huge and so comfortable. And the Japanese breakfast was absolutely delicious.
The location was also very conveniently based in Gion, close to the temples in the area and in walking distance to the main Gion district where we found many shops and restaurants.
We will definitely be back!
- Susan (8/5): - Great experience of Japanese lifestyle, sleeping in futon beds in a tatami room. Highlight of the stay is the Japanese breakfast , wearing a yukata garb. staff are very helpful. They are like family, assisting us from the start until the end.
- Marcus (10/5): - Best Japanese food I have ever had.
- Juan (10/5): - This was a true Japanese experience. The place is magical and the food is amazing. I loved being able to try multiple authentic Japanese dishes in one meal
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very decent and authentic ryokan. Friendly and efficient staff. Nice food. Neat and environmental friendly. Convenient location. Had a wonderful and enjoyable stay there. Highly recommended!
- Yijing (10/5): Wonderful Ryokan at the heard of Kyoto - Absolute wonderful Ryokan to harbor at the heart of Gion! From amenities to services to dinings, everything is knitted to the smallest details. Definitely would be back again in the future should availability allows.
- Claire (10/5): - A truly Japanese experience. So wonderful.
- Michael (10/5): - Exceptional service and food in a fantastic location in Kyoto!
- Nicholas (8/5): - Yuzuya is a nice classic ryokan in the heart of Gion. We stayed at a number of other Ryokan in Japan and we enjoyed this one as well. Room was smaller than expected, I will say, though the wooden bath tub in the room was great. The best thing by far about Yuzuya, though, was the incredible food. Really next level dinner and breakfast - some of the best food we had in Kyoto. But the main drawback is the price, which I don't think matched the quality of the services provided. Don't get me wrong: it's a gorgeous property and the food was fantastic. But it still felt overpriced. Nevertheless, if you aren't getting the Ryokan experience in another city, stay here 1 night (no longer is needed).
- Charles (10/5): - Beautiful. Quiet. Calm and delicious food.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- DeNae (10/5): - Unique traditional Japanese experience with amazing staff and nice bathhouse amenities.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Rundown for the price. There are better ryokans for a similar expense. I did appreciate the breakfast and the helpful service.
- Kelsey (10/5): - Absolutely incredible. The service is above and beyond. The room even had ice water jug for my evening return and Yuzu fruit to place in your bath simply fragrance. The location could not be anymore perfect. Dead center in Gion and right beside the main temple. The gardens inside are amazing and the breakfast also very authentic Japanese and amazing as well. I would stay again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved everything about my stay. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, service was impeccable, room was very nice and clean. Everything was outstanding.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Matthew (10/5): - The level of service was incredible, from the e-mails before my arrival to the first greeting, and every contact throughout my stay. The hospitality was matched by the incredibly charm of the place, both inside my room and in the dining room and hot bath. Also, the meals were exemplary, both in presentation and taste.
I will certainly return to the Yuzuka when I am back in Kyoto.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was phenomenal a great location. Incredible rooms. And truly good service!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): Tradtional japanese - Amazing trditional japanese place. Breakfast is amazing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room was comfortable and clean with good amenities. Yuzu bath was relaxing. Friendly staff. Amazing location right next to yasaka shrine, I went for a walk in the shrine grounds at night and it was a nice and different experience
- Verified traveler (10/5): - have been to Kyoto several times already, however, this ryokan still refreshes my image of this ancient city, the fantastic location, unforgettable dinning experience, everything of this ryokan made this trip a excellent memory.
- Cynthia (10/5): Heaven in Kyoto - This was the hi light of our trip! The staff made sure we had everything we needed, Beautiful place, quiet and tranquil. Loved the traditional bath with floating citrus fruit . It is butted up against the Yasaka Shrine and is central to Gion area.the 206 bus from Kyoto train stay takes you right in front of this wonderful place. If I could afford it I would stay here forever!
