Guest Reviews
- THOMAS (2/5): - Wont recommend
- matthew (8/5): - Does the job, Small room and hard mattress. Had trouble getting staff to book in and had to phone up.
- MASUMI (2/5): - 立地条件だけいい場所だと思います。完全のホテルに泊まりたい人には絶対におすすめしません。
- AMYDIANA (2/5): - Many roaches around
- Diana (2/5): - Terrible property, they also asked for more cash on the spot when I arrived. We did not stay and immediately booked a new hotel.
- Kazushi (6/5): - Cheap and nice
- ANGEL (6/5): - I like it being surrounded by many stores and restaurants and those are within close distance.
- Thomas W (8/5): Okay - Okay but bathroom was small
- Thomas W (8/5): - This room was okay, basically as advertised. It has free drinking water and is spacious enough. My only complaint is that the bed and mattress were hard. They should upgrade to better and softer mattresses.
- Zoe Grace (2/5): - Worst travel experience ever because of rhis place! There are covkroaches everywhere in the room and the rooms is very dusty and dirty. We left the room and book another hotel when we saw the situation.
- Bevin (8/5): - The staff at check-in was great. Unfortunately, the cleaning lady tried to get me out an hour or so before check-out. She knocked briefly and then immediately used a key to try to come in, and if i hadn't been directly next to the door to block, she'd have barged in on me in my towel. Also, the water dispenser didn't work. That the rooms are soundproofed is a blatant lie. Considering the area and price, though, not bad overall.
- Chi ming (4/5): - Poor facilities
- Kelly (6/5): - Lift takes a long time
- Jenny (2/5): - The hotel is not stable. A person was shaking a door and scared me.
- Evan (6/5): - A little hard to find but if you are used to the type of markets around you'll be fine. Also it's really small
- Tram (2/5): - Terriblement sale
- Anaru (4/5): - Took a long time to finally find them in the warren of stalls. They didn't have my booking so put me in another "guest house" (cramped room with an even smaller toilet/shower/sink combo - which was either leaking or broken). The aircon and lights worked and the workers were helpful, it was clean and I had a bed to sleep on.
- Yoshinari (4/5): - シーツ枕元に大きなシミあり。気持ち悪くて、気になって眠れなかった。
- Lou (2/5): Never go there - I've been followed multiple times through the elevator, the smell in the room was awful and I saw so many bugs, I can't even count them. You should not go there, or at least, not alone.
- Verified traveler (2/5): The worst one ever - Wrong description and picture shown during the booking… when you asking for changing room in checkin time, they refused unless you pay extra on top… what a trap ;(
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Terrible experience!!!
Booked a room from Kyoto Guest House, and ended up staying somewhere else after more than an hour of hassle. Great price, but not worth the time and trouble.
- Siyanda (4/5): - The guesthouse is in an excellent location. It's walking distance from the metro, as well as the Hong Kong skyline view on Victoria Harbour. The staff were also very welcoming and warm during check-in.
However, the room I had at the guesthouse was quite filthy. One of the sheets actually had animal droppings on it. Furthermore, the coachroaches which soon appeared made my stay unbearable.
The guesthouse also needs to improve it's check-in process significantly, ensuring that there are no hidden fees in its rooms. Furthermore, they need to communicate things like check-in, check-out and any changes to a booking prior to a guest arriving if need be, in order to avoid any confusion.
I credit the staff for allowing me to keep my luggage at the guesthouse after checkout.
- tokyotrader (6/5): Cheap and ok - This guesthouse usualy costs about 150 to 200 Hong Kong dollars per night. The rooms are small but have their own toilet and shower. The beds are ok. In short its cheap and functional. The location is ok. If you need a cheap place to stay this is ok. There are many other guest houses in Chung King mansions. They seem about the same.
- jjb781 (6/5): You get what you paid for - My family and I are passing by Hong Kong and needed a place to stay for a night.
Pros:
1)The location is good and easy to find.
2)It's on higher floor so its quiet.
3)Near the subway.
Cons:
1) ELEVATOR!!! They have only 1 working elevator. Imagine if you needed to go down and up multiple times, you really need to queue.
2) Ground floor is a market so its quite crowded.
3) No toiletries, they will only provide you a towel.
Actually the place is more for backpackers and not for family. The place is good depending on how you travel.
- I_wander_asia (8/5): Simple but clean - We stayed here for almost a week and felt very comfortable and safe. The staff are friendly and provide a clean environment.
Chungking mansions can be scary when you first arrive but the people hustling outside are really harmless. The Indian food downstairs is really good.
The hostel is in a great location and we enjoyed our stay.
- Lisa (6/5): Too small. Only convenience of location. - Very Small cramped room in a convenient location. Close to mtr station and busses pick you up out front.
- shasnica (6/5): Overall was good - I stayed 3 nights at Kyoto Guest House with 5 of my friend, we booked 1 room for 4 people and 1 room for 2 people.
The room as i expected is so small but clean.
I dont really spend many time in the room but I dont have any complain regarding the room. Overall it was nice and safe + clean. The only minus is on the Lobby Chungking Mansions too much people are offering rooms, restaurants and ect. Also the lift is so small.
- 590jhl (6/5): Great location. Very poor facility. - First of all, this is in Chungking Mansion located in the center of Tsim Sha Tsui.
Chungking Mansion is a very famous building to local people. There are many cheap motels placed at each floor and very crowded with sellers and visitors at the first floor. Some people may not like this circumstance very much.
Meanwhile, If you are a young budget traveler and you can put everything else aside to save time and money, I recommend this place.
The room was so small. The heater was so weak that it's cold inside and the hot water maintained for short time. Towels were provided one a day. The room cleanness was not that bad.
Anyway, the price was much cheaper than other business hotels around. So, it's not a bad option considering things I mentioned above.
- dSoloTravlr (8/5): A Memory of the Past - We actually stayed here Sept of 2011. And as far as I can remember, the experience was good from our email exchanges with them back then for the booking (wherein we paid in half and the rest in cash upon arrival) until our stay which was for 3 nights except for the elevator rides (long queues, cramped space) and people always trying to sell/offer you something. The room was small and clean. But space wasn't an issue for us as most of the days we were outside exploring the city and was just there to freshen up ourselves and have a good night's sleep (which we had). Owner and her assistant were friendly and accommodating enough. Overall, I can say that I can recommend this place to those who: (1) want to be near to the MRT, (2) want to be near the ferry station esp if you have plans in going on a side trip to Macau, (3) want to be near downtown HK, (4) a budget traveler and (5) will spend most their time outside than inside.
- Shane_Donn (6/5): fairly cramped - I suppose you get what you pay for but this was definitely the smallest room I've ever stayed in. Just about enough room to stand up! That being said, it was very clean and the landlady was very nice. Handy as a place to leave the bag down but not to spend any time in
- BillyK1980 (4/5): Small, Hard, Loud - When I first got to the Chung King Mansions I regretted my decision to be a tight and after about 20minutes waiting for a lift (there is only one lift and there is always large delays) I got to my room and I couldn't believe how small it is.. So glad I was a solo traveller, if i was with someone it would have been hell even though I got a double room, I would have hated to see the single room!.
I left my room and headed out for the night, got back to go to sleep only to find out the pillows and mattress are rock hard! I ended up using the towels as a pillow.
The Aircon is very loud and kept me awake all night or it could have been the rock hard mattress.
Waking up the next morning I really considered leaving but I am a stubborn person, so I went to have a shower only to realise the hot water is very temperamental and only last for a few minutes but the worst thing was there was no shower! It was above the toilet so when you need to do your business later on you had a wet seat.
Advise for everyone, if you want to save money and dont need any comforts in life go for it, as it has a great location. But my recommendation is that you pay more and stay elsewhere.
After 2.5 week holiday it wasn't a great way to end the trip.
- CinnamonBun (8/5): Great place, once you get used to Chung King Mansion - I'm not going to lie, when we first stepped into Chung King Mansion we regretted our decision to stay here and very nearly went somewhere else.
But, we stuck it out and headed up to the 15th to Kyoto Guest House, and ended up being very glad we did. Our room, although small, was very clean and comfortable. The ladies who run the guest house are extremely friendly and helpful. Location-wise, it's hard to beat Chung King - very close to the subway, malls, restaurants, Star Line ferry and everything else you could ever need.
Great value, would stay here again.
- APEater (10/5): Great hostel, and do not be scared of Chung King! - Ok, arriving at Chung King at 4am was daunting for my girlfriend, but after the initial reservations, you soon realise what a gem this is and especially Kyoto. The room was ofcourse small (come on, its HK) but it was perfect for what we needed and exceptionally clean. The guys running the place were a bit frosty at start, but were really great after they got to know us. It is safe, quiet and comfortable. I will stay here again when I am in HK.
- eva865 (8/5): Clean and good location - Any hostel in Nathan Rd puts you in the centre of things. Chung King Mansion might put you off abit at the entrance but once you get used to it its fine. Was a bit confused on how to go up to the 15th floor but just queue at the lifts for odd floor numbers and the lift should be the one near the entrance (where the money changer is). Touts will be trying to get business from you especially if they see you carrying a bag/luggage. Just tell them you already have a booking and they will leave you alone. Kyoto Guest House is reasonable priced (to HK standard). Rooms and WC is really clean, staff really helpful. Might be a bit of uncomfortable for claustrophobic people
- d4rk_sp1d3r (10/5): Nice host, strong wifi, near everything - I stayed at this hostel for 6 days with my girlfriend for our vacation/ adventure . The reason why I chose this is because of the good reviews from tripadvisor. I booked at a hostel in Mirador mansion at first but when I saw the review there I canceled and booked at this hostel. The owner of this hostel and her Filipina assistant was very nice to us. Ms. Wong the owner always smiled everytime we go out and go inside the hostel. We enjoyed our stay because the location was very near to everything you need. China Travel Services is right across the street. Chungking Mansion is next to CKE mall and all the big malls in Hongkong. A lot of foreign exchange is also available at the ground floor of chungking mansions. The hostel was very clean and even though the room is small. The wifi was very strong that I remember testing the bandwidth reaching at 20mbps. Of course, the downside is chungking mansion itself with its reputation of a lot of foreigners selling or offering different things while you walk to the elevator. The elevator is very small and you will have to line up just to get to the 15th floor. If you need a cheap place to stay with very nice people as your host, book at this hostel.
- mhamrah (8/5): Good budget option by HK standards. - Chung King mansion is an experience in itself and doesn't have the best reputation, but if you need a budget option in HK and the Y is full, this is probably your next best bet. Riding the elevator is a little annoying, but rooms at Kyoto are reasonably priced, albeit extremely small, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We spent two nights and had no problem. The location is right by the subway so it's very easy to get around, and the bus stop from the airport is right outside the entrance. Good free wifi is a nice perk.
- nikilnh (10/5): Scary at first site but it is a gem of a place - I was skeptical at staying at the Chung King Mansion and it is a little sketchy but they have food that is pretty good inside.
The Hostel itself is not much but it is safe and clean. It was definitely small but I think that is what you get in Hong Kong. There are two parts of the Kyoto house and each side there is someone who works for the house staying there which as a parent made me feel a bit safer.
The ladies that work there are great. They try their best to be helpful. If you are on a budget stay here it is nice and clean.
- UAGDO (8/5): Perfect budget travel place to stay in HK - In the center of Kowloon, with 1 minute walk to the subway station Tsim Sha Tsui and 3 minutes walk to the ferry piers to Hong Kong. Lively location which does not give a very good first impression when approaching the building, but the guest house on 15th floor is very clean and silent. The two ladies operating it are very friendly and helpful. Just ask them! I would go there any time again. Room space is varying from very small to extra small, but this is HK. Just stay there to sleep. W-LAN internet acces is included in the prices and fast and stable.
Use the right lift, as the left one stops at even levels only.
- MaconiaM (8/5): Clean, friendly staff and good wifi - The place, as stated in other reviews, is super clean. The staff is great, super helpful. We paid 50 usd for a small room, with private toilet in Kowloon. It was a weekend, I guess you can get it for less too. Its located in the famous Chungking Mansions.
Let me tell you something about this Chungking Mansions...THEY ARE NOT MANSIONS! Off course I was not expecting a Mansion, but this place is crap. There are 2 elevators running to 18 floors, to get up or down you have to wait ages! There are always queues of 20 people (no exaggeration) to get in. If I was a woman in my own I WOULDN'T GO. These mansions are located in a building which first floor is full of "suspicious" shops, with fake electronics, money changers and more. Is not very nice atmosphere. When we were there the police was there checking all the passports for the immigrants doing their living just in the front of your elevator but I don't think you can do better with a tight budget in HK.
- boolateh (10/5): Cheap clean and well located. - If you are on a shoestring budget, then paying $30 usd for two persons in a private room ensuite bathroom is fantastic! Especially if the place is super clean and well located.
The room is uber small but well lit. And the place ia newly refurbished. If you are super tall or big, you will have a problem since the bed is not standard, maybe 6 feet long? And floor space is not too much. BUT, if you want to save on lodging and use your money instead for shopping and eating, this is the best place to be. Very well located, everything is walking distance! And the local MTR is just outside the door.
Best place for singles and couples.
- Ronal_Balena (10/5): Like home! - Place is super super clean and location is just great, with subway nextdoor and a lot of Hong Kong action aroud!
Building itself isn't the nicest, so don't get scared with the first impression, it gets much better!
Price was not the lowest, but it is Chinese new year and Hong Kong is pricy all around. And toilette is a bit tinny.
But overall no discussion: great place! They even have a TV in the room! Never saw such a thing in a hostel!
5 out of 5!
- Gieg (8/5): Tidy Compact Place to Sleep in Kowloon - Kyoto has what other budget guesthouses in Hong Kong should strive for
-Friendly staff
-Clean sheets and towels
-Good wireless internet access in room
-Well functioning AC
-Steps from MTR
-Lively street scene in the area; good international restaurants, grocery, shopping, bars, etc
Negatives:
- It is in the Chungking Mansions which did not seem as seedy as it's reputation. Touts on the streets in front were not overly agressive. Kyoto is on the 15th floor so it would be long run down the stairs in an emergency. We felt safe enough.
-Small 8 foot by 8 foot (roughly) room without space for a chair or other place to sit other than on the bed.
-No common area elsewhere to relax
Kyoto is a few dollars more than other hostels/guesthouses in the area. We thought it well worth paying a little more and would stay again.
