Guest Reviews
- Harald (10/5): Very comfortable cottage, good place to start discovering the area with the city of Durham, Beamish - Cottage was nicely furnished and really spacious. Very nice rooms, big kitchen and a comfortable bathroom with a great shower.
Owner was very nice and helpful when a question regarding the heating came up.
We really liked the information provided concerning the history of the colliery village.
Nice pub a few meters away.
Location was quiet at night, a good dog walk into the forest was just over the street.
Very good base to drive to Durham and Beamish Museum . Museum is definitely like Durham
absolutely worth a visit - at Beamish you can go
back in time, (ticket is not cheap but valid for a whole year).
- Hindmarch (10/5): - The place was amazing very homley we just felt so relaxed Nothing
- Stuart (10/5): Lovely stay, very comfy, easy parking nice forest walk’s across the road for dogs - Clean, comfortable, surprisingly roomy. Nothing
- Eleni (9/5): A fabulous little gem in Durham - The space was amazing and beautifully appointed. It was cosy and welcoming and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. The location was great and the surrounding area peaceful and beautiful. The main bedroom bed would benefit from a thick memory foam mattress protector to make the bed more comfortable. Maybe a later checkout time would be good if leaving on a Sunday. 10.30/11 instead of 10
- paul (10/5): Brilliant, would definitely stay again and recommend - Spotless, faultless Nothing
- Michael (10/5): Hidden treasure! - An amazing property a mere stones throw away from our chosen holiday venue.
Great communications with the hosts, who couldn't of been ore accommodating. Nothing at all, place was amazing
- Wendy (10/5): Lovely accommodation and very helpful and attentive host. - Spacious, clean and well equipped
- Sarah (8/5): The whole family had a lovely time - The space of the flat and the location!!! The heating wasn’t on so kids were a bit cold in the night but luckily next day was warmer
- Stephen (10/5): -
- Dean (9/5): -
- Dawn (10/5): Perfect place to get away from it all - A beautiful house with all the fine personal touches. Well equipped with everything you need and spotlessly clean. The local pub at the end of the road has a welcoming warm friendly atmosphere. There is a folder the host has put together with nearly all the information could need. This is the perfect place to get away from it all.
- Roxanne (10/5): AMAZING - The property is immaculate, so welcoming, warm and even decorated for Christmas Only slight negative was I couldn’t find a chopping board and the knives were a bit blunt but no major problem for us
- JACKIE (9/5): All as described, will stay here again - Clean & well presented
- Thansaja (10/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): Wonderful - Lovely, clean, and welcoming. Great location. Pet friendly. Fab pub at the bottom of the road. Will definitely be back. Loved it. N/A
- Lynsey (8/5): I enjoyed my stay - Lovely quiet cottage Parking wasn’t always easy
- Rachael (10/5): Fantastic place- hidden gem - Everything was spot on, immaculate, spacious, clean, host was amazing, location was great for all the sites. Locomotion free train museum, Kynren, Bernard Castle - lots of things to do in the area.
Lovely horses and foals in field opposite.
Facilities in the house are fantastic. Only one complaint - needs a coffee table in the front room for cups of tea!!! Not a major issue just a suggestion !
- Gaynor (10/5): Really great. Will definitely stay again - The location was lovely and quiet and the local pub served great food. The cottage was well furnished and the hosts responded to any questions quickly.
- Marie (10/5): Marie - Excellent stay, absolutely spotless, will definitely return. Nothing, everything was perfect.
- Colin (10/5): -
- Faith (10/5): Quiet, clean, and comfy house - Lovely two bedroom house in a quiet location. Comfy beds and friendly host. It was easy to park in front the house and there is a lovely woods opposite which was fab for walking the dog. The back garden is enclosed. There's a bus stop opposite and a pub at the bottom of the road that served good food. This was a great base for exploring Durham and the surrounding area and we even drove up to Bamburgh and the Holy Island for a day trip. Would definitely stay again. Nothing.
- Saffron (10/5): Lovely cottage, great location! - Really lovely cottage. Homely, comfortable, clean, spacious, and everything you need! Lovely location, peaceful and perfect for dogs with the woodland walk just over the road (see photo) and plenty of other walks nearby. Easy access to Durham, pleasant drive in. Nice, comfy, big bed too! We enjoyed our stay and stayed a couple of days longer! Clare was very helpful, caring, and kind 😊 Nothing, perfect stay. Highly recommended.
- Jason (10/5): Nice and welcoming :) - From the very moment that we walked into the home, we felt very welcomed by the inviting nature of the property and the snacks that she kindly left for us. The bedrooms are on the large size for the UK, and we enjoyed the spacious nature of their rooms and of the home. It was very easy to warm the property. We found it to be quiet and peaceful. There were some nice areas to walk around the area. The pictures show the property to be lovely - We found the property to be even better than the pictures indicated. It exceeded our expectations. Also, the quality of the bedding was really good. There was plenty of free parking available within a few steps of the home. We unfortunately did not have a chance or time to try the pub which was less than a minute walk away, which also looked very inviting every time we walked past it.
- Ian (9/5): Superb -
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jess (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely and clean, quiet and comfortable
- Maria (9/5): Lovely cottage in great location -
- Anne (9/5): Very comfortable rural cottage - .
- Noble (8/5): Great couple of days away in a nice house, pub 8 doors away with pub food and friendly staff - Lovely house, good sized living room, dining room and galley kitchen. Small outdoor area with artificial grass. Two good sized bedrooms and bathroom Nothing to say
- Julius (9/5): Superb - House was amazing. Probably the best house I have stayed in three years travelling with work.
The mattress for double bed would be the only thing I wasn't 100% happy. Would come again 100%
- Mikako (10/5): Exceptional - Everything Nothing
- Tdz (9/5): Nice, cosy and affordable acommodation, reasonably near to Durham city centre by car - Lovely house, spacious for a family of four and very clean. Easy parking at the front of the property, reasonably short journey to Durham city centre (~20 mins). We didn't find anything to dislike.
- Pauline (10/5): Exceptional - Everything, couldn't fault a thing. Nice friendly neighbours especially the pub at the bottom of the road. Clare was amazing . The car broke down she put us in touch with a local garage with a fantastic mechanic. All was good could have been a nightmare. Thankyou so much Clare. Nothing at all
- Lucy (9/5): Superb -
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Nicola (10/5): Great place.. lovely, clean and lots of space - This place was amazing. Can’t wait to book and come back Nothing. Was all amazing
- Kath (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was excellent..really quiet location..great parking...modern and well looked after...everything you could need provided. Nothing to say here.
- Sl (10/5): Just perfect -
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Spiritof (8/5): Comfortable rural home from home - It was very clean and very nicely decorated The single beds were a little bit small for me and my son we are both 6ft but otherwise it was lovely
- Helen (8/5): Very good - Perfect size for our party of four.
Very accommodating host
Clean and well furnished
- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional - Everything about the property was superb
- Frank (8/5): Very good - We really liked the holiday home because it was spacious and clean. We had a lot of space and really enjoyed our three days there. Many thanks to the friendly host Clare
- Nichole (10/5): Beautiful facilities, in a great location, run by a friendly and approachable team - all for a very reasonable price. We - It was beautifully furnished, very well equipped, in a great location - and with the most comfortable bedrooms you could wish for. All you could ask, for a very reasonable price - our group loved staying at Colliery Cottage and would definitely do so again. Nothing negative to say about it at all.
- Ryan (10/5): Brilliant home away from home. - Everything you need, spotlessly clean throughout.
- Michelle (8/5): Lovely stay in great property- beautifully presented and host was really welcoming - Lovely cottage really clean and well equipped,
- Cathryn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deborah (9/5): Colliery Cottage - prepare to be impressed! - Colliery Cottage was like the Tardis... an unassuming 2 up 2 down terrace on the outside but when you step in - wow!
The whole property has been refurbished at some point to a very high standard and is beautifully presented throughout.
Everything you're likely to need is there... crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, towels, hairdryer and even complimentary toiletries!
Parking was easy and convenient as the little street outside the row of cottages runs parallel to the road so the only people to use it are the residents.
There's a nice traditional pub serving food literally a 30 second walk away!
We would definitely recommend this cottage as a lovely, relaxing place to stay. There's nothing we didn't like (well maybe the weather but that's not the proprietor's fault 😄)
- Kirby (10/5): Cannot reccomend enough! - Absolute 10/10. Amazing value for money, beautiful clean and dog friendly home. Comfortable beds with heavy duvets. HUGE smart TV in the living room. Snacks in the kitchen were a lovely touch. The host Clare is AMAZING! Available to contact any time, and even gave me a lift to the village to get some bits as I woke up with a horrible cold. The heating is on 3 times daily so it doesn't get cold which is great in this weather! Lovely location to take the dog. Not sure if it was because he's never felt fake grass before, but my spaniel hopped the back wall looking for somewhere to pee and got a bit lost and scared me to death so keep an eye on your animals in the garden, but that's a me problem and nothing to do with the place. Can be awkward to get around if you don't drive as its a rural area! I should have researched that better, but was great to get away from city life and my spaniel absolutely loved it.
- Amina (10/5): Best host ever - Clare was exceptional. I wish all hosts were like her. She went well above to make sure our stay was great. We will definitely go back and recommend the place. Absolutely nothing to dislike
- Michelle (10/5): Fantastic family Christmas - Very spacious 2 bed cottage. Beautiful location with a great dog walk opposite. Fantastic communication and great host. Very homely and decorated beautifully for Christmas with additional personal touches. Clare went out of her way to accommodate our additional requests- highchair, chairs, crockery etc - Bathroom door didn’t shut properly
- couldn’t find normal tv channels
- Annie (9/5): Lovely home from home with everything you need. - It was spotlessly clean and looked immaculate. There was a lovely goody bag full of treats which was a nice surprise. Great location with a lovely view of horses in a field. There was also a lovely pub just down the road serving good pub grub. We didn’t like the check out time of 10am on a Sunday and the block capital notice telling you to be out by 10am put us on edge.
- Mark (9/5): Exceptionally clean and well equipped family and pet friendly property. - Exceptionally clean. Milk and treats left in kitchen. Bed seems a little uncomfortable and not as comfortable as previous stay at property.
- Leanne (9/5): Superb - Hosts were fantastic- Clare is very thoughtful and helpful. Stunning location- beautiful walks on doorstep, excellent pub serving great food and close to town. Cottage was immaculate and a great base for our stay
- Stock (10/5): Exceptional - Spacious, spotlessly clean. Comes with all the facilities you could possibly need. Quiet location.
Everything well presented with clear information and instructions left.
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Patricia (10/5): Proper home from home - The cottage is a proper home from home. Clare has made sure that everything you could need it there. Beds super comfy and everywhere lovely and clean. Nice wee seating area in the garden I can honestly say there was nothing not to like here

- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional - Cottage was in a great location. Clean and spacious. Host's were easy to contact Nothing
- Nigel (10/5): Really lovely property - The cottage was lovely and very spacious! Everything you could possibly need was on hand and it was spotlessly clean. The host was very friendly and answered any queries we had. Parking was available right outside the property and there was an area at the back to be able to sit outside. The welcome pack was a really lovely addition too 😊 Only the weather!
- Stacey (10/5): Had a great stay. Would definitely book again. - The property was very clean & had everything you needed. Great location. Very helpful host. Nothing was too much trouble. Nothing
- Fusa (10/5): Definitely come back again - It was just a perfect place to stay.
The house was spotless, the rooms, living room and dining room are decorated nicely. Easy to check in and the location was perfect too.
Only 15mins to centre of Durham and so many options to walk my dog around the house. Nothing to complain
- Debbie (10/5): Fabulous short break, house is exceptional and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. - Beautiful house in a fabulous location. Nothing, it’s quite perfect.
- Vicki (10/5): Exceptional - Property absolutely spotless, really spacious. Great parking outside. We were lucky with weather so lovely to be able to sit outside and enjoy a morning cuppa tea. Nothing
- Ieva (10/5): Place like home - Absolutely amazing place. Husband went raiding and I went there just to chill out. Kids who are all always on the phone enjoyed a days without a phones as there was a playground and horses over the road. Place was homely and clean. Pub is just 5 houses down with most amazing food.
- Ryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (9/5): We had a great stay at Colliery Cottage, Clare is a lady who has thought of it all. Her communication was useful and fri - A wonderfully kept property with everything very well thought about. nothing
- Michael (9/5): A lovely place to stay and a good base to explore Durham and the surrounding area. A real home from - The Cottage was extremely clean and very comfortable. The Royal Oak pub is just a few doors away. The food is very good and reasonably priced.
Our host at the cottage (Clare) provided us with lots of information to make our stay even more enjoyable. Nothing; we had an excellent stay at Colliery Cottage.
- Peter (9/5): Ideal cottage for day trips in the local area. all facilities were of a high standard - what a great place to stay, a very good cottage with all facilities all at a high standard. location is ideal for travel around the district nothing, all good
- Richard (10/5): Wonderful cottage, highly recommended - What a lovely place to stay. Clare made us feel very welcome in her lovely comfortable cottage. It's a spacious place with high quality fittings in a pleasant location close to an excellent, down to earth pub with great food. There was nothing we didn't like.
- David (8/5): The accomodation provides everything you need for a very comfortable self catering holiday. - We choose the property because it gives good access to the North Penines, Yorkshire Dales etc. We stayed here previously and returned partly because of the location and partly for the quality of the accomodation. Smart TV would be a nice addition
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional - A spacious house with all you need for a few nights stay.large comfy bed a blackout curtains made for a good night's sleep.a wood straight across the road for walking dogs. The 2 sofas in the living room in my opinion weren't very big or comfy but that's probably because 4 people were using them
- Charles (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alison (9/5): Superb - spacious and clean
- Hall (10/5): A recharging little break over New Year’s Eve & Day perfect for the dogs not one firework - Spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming. Had everything you could need very quiet lovely neighbours too Nothing not to like it was fantastic ,already booked again before leaving
- Derek (10/5): 5 STARS - Perfect from start to finish. - Upon arrival and meeting Clare our host, we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Very welcoming , beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean home with everything you could possibly need for your stay. Cottage is situated in a very quiet small terrace location with an outstanding village pub on the end, which serves delicious home cooked food and better still a “lovely friendly welcome “. If we’d have had any issues ( which we didn’t ) then Clare was always available and on hand living locally. We honestly didn’t have ANY complaints/ issues at all.
Perfect in every way.

- Christine (10/5): 5 Star - Clare is an excellent host and left treats and essentials at the cottage. The cottage was very clean and modern. Access to all the North East has to offer from the cottage. I would highly recommend the cottage for other families.
- Pamela (10/5): Fantastic stay and fantastic host. - This place was beautifully and conveniently situated, value for money, exceptionally clean, and just a fantastic homely stay.
The owner was a lovely lady who was close by if needed, she was very welcoming even left little treats for our stay. The accommodation had everything we needed including a washing machine and a line in the back yard. Kitchen was fantastic, not that we used it much as there was a great little pub about 8 doors down. Beds were comfy and clean and the shower was great. Comfy lounge room, plenty of space all over the house. Across the road is a playground and a beautiful wooded area for walks. Parking was available outside for no extra charge. A very safe and very quiet area at night, which was great for sleeping. Shops a couple of minutes drive away. This was one of our best accommodations on our month long trip. Very close to everything touristy but away from the hustle and bustle. We would definitely travel from Australia to stay at this property again, but for longer. Do yourself a favour and stay here and explore the surrounding area, you will not be disappointed in the accommodation or the area. There was not a single thing to fault in this property it was definitely 10 out of 10.
- Charlie (10/5): - Lovely cottage, clean well presented. Good communication, nice folder on the table for arrival with lots of local info 👌 first class we will be back 👍

The facilities are superb, everything has been thought of.
Very good value for money. Lovely friendly communication from Clare. 10 out 10. Everything was brilliant
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (8/5): Perfect stay for us after a 300 mile drive. - For us, location was great. Close to Durham but in lovely countryside. Pretty good pub was only 50mtrs away. Not great if you want to eat somewhere other than the pub (and have a drink)
- Robert (10/5): When it comes to value for money, I haven't stayed anywhere better - The property was so much bigger than expected and had everything needed for a comfortable stay Strong perfume-like-scent throughout the property
- Lesley (10/5): Fabulous - This property looked nice in the photos but was even nicer in reality. Beautiful furnishings and comfortable throughout and contact with owner was super quick and helpful Nothing
- Caroline (9/5): Lovely property. Very clean and homely. - Lovely property, very clean. It had everything we needed for a family stay. Good local pub which serves excellent food. Bus stop right outside into Durham centre (although not a frequent timetable).
- Andrew (10/5): Fantastic - book without hesitation as it is a great base for the Area - Excellent base to explore Durham. We were given great information by Clare on the best local places to park, where to eat, where to visit. Everything was spot on. Ask a local and we were so pleased we did. Property was spacious and imaculately clean. We were so grateful to find milk in the fridge and other goodies on arrival. It was like coming home from holiday and a family member leaving essentials for us, so 10/10 for thoughtfulness! When we come back to the area, this will be the first place we look for.
- Nitin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kate (10/5): Exceptionally clean, well presented and spacious. Very attentive host. Many thanks, Clare! -
- Richard (10/5): We wanted somewhere near Durham with facilities for us and our puppy. Here we found everything - comfort, cleanliness, c - Sometimes you stay at a very special place - this was one of those occasions. Excellent all round! Thank you 🙏 Nothing to dislike
- Janice (10/5): Immaculate property in convenient location - This immaculate terraced cottage is deceptively large inside and has open views front and back. The kitchen has everything you’d need, including a washing machine and dryer. My double bed was comfy and the shower in the bathroom is the most powerful one I’ve ever used-bliss!
There’s plenty of free parking in front of the terrace just off the A road. Road traffic was minimal and therefore road noise was not an issue.
There’s no shop within the village but there is a pub at the end of the row which serves food to eat in or takeaway. I collected a meal for one of garlic mushrooms which came with a slice of garlic bread and salad garnish, 10” pizza and a slice of chocolate orange cake-all for just £12. What a bargain.
I’d also recommend the Greenhouse cafe at Lanchester garden centre, only about a four minute drive away, their cooked breakfast was delicious and the cakes looked amazing. If you’re travelling with children the centre also has a small tropical zoo, owls and play area which I didn’t explore-entry is £4.
Knitsley farm shop near Consett is also worth a visit for their fantastic range of produce and small cafe.
The property is perfectly placed to explore the many tourist attractions and lovely rolling countryside. The fantastic Beamish museum, imposing Angel of the North, historic Durham and beautiful east coast are all just a short drive away.
I’d love to return here again-what more if a recommendation can I give.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Check in was by a text prior to our artival, giving full instructions. Very clear and easy to follow.
Set back off the maon road but very wuiet st night and parking felt very safe. There is a small sitting area at the back.
The cottage was lovely and clean and very well equipped, with all the home conforts you would need for a short or long break.
