Guest Reviews
- Daniele (9/5): -
- Paul (10/5): - Classic Japanese ryokan experience. Most outstanding Japanese breakfast ever!!! Succulent mackerel. Heavenly rice. And the most delicious homemade miso soup with fresh mushrooms and daikon. Perfect way to start a vacation on our first day.
- Herra_H (10/5): - Huone oli mukava ja siisti. Henkilökunta erittäin ammattitaitoinen ja ystävällinen. Aamupala huippulaatua!
- Taku (10/5): -
- Vitalir (10/5): - The owner is very nice and helpful, the breakfast was delicious
- Xavier (8/5): - You sleep in a futon on a tatami, so expect to get a sore back
- Jon Duri (9/5): Eine tolle, authentische Unterkunft.
- Nkajima (5/5): -
- Gary (9/5): A ryokan stay that felt like a homestay due to the friendly atmosphere created in the dining and living area. - It was in a quiet area but close to a tram line.
Very friendly staff.
Excellent breakfast.
Homely breakfast/dining room. The futon was a bit hard for me. I like squishy mattresses and pillows, but I know some people are happy on a hard bed.
- Ovidiu (10/5): Great place to stay in Kumamoto - Staff was very friendly, kind and helpful.
Tha room was very clean and the breakfast very delicios. I would highly recommend trying out the breakfast.
Thank you very much for a wonderful stay !
- Dawn (10/5): Great location.Excellent breakfast prepared by kind and gracious host and hostess. - Our hosts were wonderful! Always helpful with smiles on their faces. Location is great…close to street with lots of buses for transportation but in a quiet little neighborhood. 711 is a couple blocks away if needed. Definitely have breakfast! Delicious and very reasonable! Great way to start the day! Highly recommend Tamaki Ryoken if staying in Kumamoto
- Khalif (10/5): Best place I stayed in Japan - The Ryokan was great. The room was spacious, clean, and perfect for one person. A short tram ride from the castle and train station. But what elevates this place is the service. Hiro and Mai are two fantastic individuals and they took care of me. Hiro makes perhaps the best breakfasts I had in Japan. I highly recommend the ryokan.
- Tristan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Xin (10/5): Great stay - Owners are very nice. Room is huge and very comfortable. My child has great time while staying there.
- Sridhar (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (8/5): Very good - The Owner is an incredible cook, eat there!!
The room was clean & basic but a good value for the $
Owner & wife are very helpful Location
- Chun (10/5): - Home owner was nice and welcoming.
- Karl (7/5): Good short one night stop - The room was a large traditional Japanese room with tatami and roll out Futon mattresses to sleep on the floor. It was pleasant and quiet. Staff were helpful. there was a private toilet and bathroom and it was quite retro which personally I liked. Parking was easily available. The staff were nice and had information about the local area easily available The bathroom was a little run down and while generally clean could have benefited from a deep clean and some maintenance. Sleeping on the floor was hard! I realise that this should be expected however I have slept in other traditional Japanese rooms which were softer so maybe the Futon could have been better.
- Ashley (9/5): Superb -
- Penelope (9/5): Excellent - Breakfast and dinner were excellent.
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - Very kind, helpful, and attentive host, great japanese breakfast, nearby train and tram stations. If I book a stay in Kumamoto again, it will definitely be Tamaki!
(10/5): Exceptional - I stayed at Tamaki Ryokan for almost a week, which was super active, because Kumamoto and Kyushu in general are super interesting, and it was very nice to come back in the evening. Come like half-dead and such a plop bang on the futon! A comfortable nest with a truly Japanese atmosphere and kilometers of tatami. A yokai could live in a cool closet, it's a pity that it was not there.
It was especially cool to drink the famous tap water, standing on the balcony with a view of the blooming sakura.
If I can return to Kumamoto in the future, I will definitely stay here again. Thank you Mai-san and Hiro-san. (arigatou and spasibo too, lol)
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional - The Ryokan was very comfortable and the breakfast was very delicious 😊
- Chooi (8/5): Very good - The room clean up service provided by the staff was excellent, making sure that the room essentials were well stocked. The location was fairly great for its value, not the nearest to the city center but it helped that we had a car to travel about. The check-in process for us was quite confusing. The staff was not present during the appointed check-in time, and we were left to wonder around the apartment for awhile not knowing when he would return, since there was not direct way of communication besides email. We went to check if there was any note left behind in the rooms but none to be found. We ended up leaving our luggage in one room with the keys left inside and left to go about the rest of the day. Turned out to be the wrong room, but he still made good arrangements to help us settle in for the night.
- Olena (10/5): A great place for both adults and children. - A wonderful ryokan! We stayed here as a family—two adults and two children. The room was very spacious.
We loved that the yukatas were provided not only for adults but also for children. It was also a nice touch to have toys available for the kids. The breakfast was delicious as well.
- Beryl (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (9/5): First time experiencing a Ryokan. Would stay again 100 percent. - ひろさん was a brilliant cook, and lovely person to talk to.
Enjoyed the beds. Some of the best sleep I've had in Japan! WiFi was failing to connect for the first night but we came in rather late so, fair enough. However it was working the next day so excellent.
- Sosorburam (8/5): Very good -
- Jeremy (8/5): Very good - Simple tatami room in a guesthouse in the Suizenji area of Kumamoto. The area is quiet, but reasonably well-connected to sights and restaurants via train and tram. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and there is everything you need for a short stay. The wifi was intermittent, but otherwise everything was fine.
- Marcus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ansgar (8/5): Convenient, clean, everything it claims to be. - Very clean, great breakfast, convenient location to take the tram into down-town and to the castle. Lots of dinner options in short walking distance. Good parking. The bathrooms were quite tight for my 192cm body...but workable and also very clean.
- Matthew (10/5): Fabulous stay, great experience - Great location, 5min walk to JR train station.
Furnished with clean tatami and toiletries.
The host was prompt in his replies, i was caught in a jam and was late , updated him thur the msg, and within the next minute he replies and acknowledge. Nil
- Belinda (8/5): Very good -
- Rinda (10/5): this place deserves more than 5 stars. their hospitality is beyond my expectations - service mind
- Yukiyori (10/5): Relaxed like locals - This location, Miso-Tenjin/Shin Suizenji, is quite a good hub point. You can go anywhere: the castle, stations, malls, shrines, and of course, the famous Suizenji Garden within 10 to 15 mins. by bike(you can directly use shared cycles right here!), trams and buses. You'll also have an excellent concierge here. He definitely gives you good points of view about Kumamoto. Just enjoy! None
- Maurice (8/5): Very good - Great friendly host, fantastic breakfast, in quiet neighborhood, clean and well maintained, rooms are spacious. Stairs only, in a suburb location without lots of nearby restaurant, far from nearest train/bus stop
- Theoretical (9/5): Small family like Ryokan with great hosts - Location is great, very quiet.
- Huang (8/5): Very good -
- Kang (10/5): Homely, peaceful accomodation, ran by fantastic hosts that is accessible and budget-friendly. - Fantastic family-owned ryokan, the owner and his wife were super kind and helpful, and answered any questions I had regarding the surrounding area and city. Though my stay was short, it was pretty exceptional as returning to the ryokan every night felt like coming back home.
- Yao (6/5): Pleasant -
- Valentine (7/5): Welcoming and close to a JR station - The ryokan is well located near the Suizenji Koen, the Luffy statue and near a JR station on the Hohi Line, which is very convenient but you need to take the bus for the castle (which was in renovation for us so we could not see it). The room was cleaned. Staff was very nice. We got very cold during night and the ryokan was a bit messy in the communal area, the bathroom is very small. For breakfast, I told the ryokan that I was gluten-free when I booked, they said it was ok. When we arrived, they mentionned it was ok for them and they will make a gluten-free breakfast for me, I was really happy about it. But at breakfast, I was served with miso soup and Japanese omelette which are normally made with soy sauce containing gluten. I asked but they said it was gluten free, I asked if it contained soy sauce, they said yes! They did not know that soy sauce contained gluten! I think they should be more considerate about that. Allergies are really important, it can put the guests in really bad conditions, I would have liked them to make the effort to check what gluten is and would have understood how important it was for me to eat safely.
(9/5): Superb -
- Oleg (9/5): Superb - Very nice staff, happy to help. Good ryokan.
We would stay here again.
- Shannon (7/5): Good -
- Lord (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Carlos (7/5): Good -
- Chai (10/5): Exceptional - location and breakfast
- Nicole (9/5): Superb - Very kind owner, excellent breakfest, communication without any issues Bathroom
- Dominic (10/5): - Nice home feeling with friendly host and staff. Very helpful. Breakfast included is very good. Only few minutes walk to misotenjin-mae tram stop. Hidden coin laundry around the corner. Hotel is highly recommended for budget travellers.
- Haim (8/5): Nice Roykan in a good location in Kumamoto - Nice traditional family Roykan. Breakfast was good. It is very close to the center of Kumamoto and easy to reach by tram. The bathroom in our room is a bit worn and can do with a facelift.
- Carlo (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice ryokan in a strategic position
The owner, Hiro, is a great person and gave me all the support I needed for everything, from tram ingo to reaching Takechiho Gorge Nothing to declare
- VALERIE JEAN E. (10/5): - Staff were very accommodating. Our room comfortably fit 5 people and luggages easily. They also assisted us with our luggage forwarding.
- Yi-lin (10/5): Exceptional - the owner is really nice, and his english ability do add lots of points. Nothing actually
- James (10/5): Great place to stay, easy access to gardens and tram. - Friendly Nothing
- Roman (9/5): Superb -
- Ioane (9/5): Nice stay in a Japanese style room - Living in a traditional Japanese room was a good experience. The host was also very nice. It's not very close to the city's attractions and the main railway station.
- Abe (10/5): - Super expérience
- Imelda (9/5): Superb -
- Jamie (10/5): Great place to stay in Kumamoto! - Really nice owners and great location, close to a tram stop and JR station, which makes it perfect for a trip to Mount Aso. Also in a quite street so you can get a good nights sleep.
The room was a good size and I would recommend the breakfast which was first class.
Thank you, I really enjoyed my stay at Tamaki Ryokan. It was all good!
- MaJuFilip (10/5): traditional Ryokan experience at an ideal distance from the city center - During my trip in Kumamoto I stayed at Tamaki Ryokan and it was a pleasant experience. While the owners' knowledge of English was limited, they tried to make themselves understandable (and so did I with my limited knowledge of Japanese).
They helped me when I asked for help (e.g. checking whether or not Asosan was accessible - it was).
The room was in traditional tatami mat style with a futon (see pictures), and the bathroom was a basic model with all necessary functions.
The star of this stay was definitely the breakfast experience. The husband of the couple running this ryokan is the chef, and he is VERY good at this. Without a doubt this was the best breakfast experience I had during this trip in Japan.
Also: grapes the size of plums, some of the best I've ever had. This was the "Japanese fruit" experience that I heard so much about.
Also: the location of the ryokan is good (close to tram and train station Shin-Suizenji), and is very close to a post office (which I used to send postcards to my family).
- Nathapong (7/5): Good -
- Thanachai (10/5): Exceptional - Location is good nearly location train and Tram, you could go to your Ryokanim multiple way. The Owner and staff very helpful. He help me for travel to Aso volcano. without his help I count not go to Aso volcano at all. The room is comfortable
- Thomas (10/5): Hidden gem in quiet neighbourhood - Tamaki Ryokan is just fantastic!
Where to begin?
From the moment you enter you are feeling like it's "home". Just the japanese Version :-)
The owner and his wife are very welcoming and English was no problem at all.
The neighbourhood is very quiet and the breakfast was fantastic - yes, it's japanese and it's not what we're used to but the experience is fantastic and we really enjoyed it.
The Futon was comfy and we slept like logs.
We would definitely recommend this place - but mind yourself: the rooms are not huge and the stairs are a bit steep - if you can live with that: go for it! You won't regret it.
Would stay there again 10/10 - Arigatou gozaimasu! That we only spent one night :-(
- Olivia (10/5): Perfect - Probably one of the best places I stayed, super clean, well equiped, great hosts (and breakfast!). Would recommend!
- Vencycool (10/5): Accommodation feels like home - The comfortable accommodation and delicious breakfast made me feel at home every day of my stay.
(10/5): Exceptional - The owner is very familiar with Kumamoto, he could provide amazing advice and introductions.
- Wing Yan Yeda (8/5): Overall ok - It was overall a happy stay. Owner of the place was very nice and helpful. The room was very spacious. Breakfast was ok. Parking cost 600 yen, not sure if it’s for each stay or just overnight. We stayed one night only. There were a few small flies flying around the whole night (we weren’t able to catch them before falling sleep). Walkable distance to the tram station. Quite a few restaurants around the place.
We stayed on the ground floor. The bathroom wall could be cleaner as the wall is full of black moulds all the way from the sink up to the ceiling, and overall the ceiling. Kids and I found that quite disgusting. The bathtub sealant was full of mould too. These could be fixed easily I’m sure.
- Andersen (10/5): Amazing and Unique Japanese Experience. Host was great and the Japanese breakfast was the best. Would happily stay here - Authentic Japanese Experience, host was amazing, and the room was a unique Japanese experience.
Japanese Breakfast was delicious.
Location is great.
Would happily stay here again. The stairs to get to the top haha. A little difficult with luggage.
- Foon (8/5): owner is hospitality and helpful.
he can speak English - breakfast is excellent
room is spacial and clean bath room is too small
- Vincent (8/5): - Bel hébergement. Les hôtes nous ont bien acceuilli.
- Chris (8/5): Very good - Good public transport link to city as well as to Aso. Pleasant neighbourhood . Bathroom too small (at least for us).
- Giacomo (7/5): Good - Breakfast was super. Easy parking. Friendly staff Room is small for 2, even for japanese standards...
- Luca (9/5): Superb - The host is really nice, always smiling and speaks English.
He is also an excellent cook, I had amazing breakfasts here!
The place is really clean and the futon is absolutely comfortable.
- Ricky (9/5): Very affordable stay in Kumamoto - Very nice staff and large room. The tap water in Kumamoto is drinkable and very well rated. The ryokan is also a parking location for Charichari app rental bikes. Meal service is also available for an additional cost and reserved in advance of your stay.
- Wei (8/5): Very good -
- Goh (9/5): nice little room very charming. would stay again. - was quite difficult with only stairs access but hiro was extremely helpful in helping to carry the bags up and down the stairs during both check in and out.
- Chin (9/5): Great stay. Recommended 👍 - Great value. Good breakfast! Nothing much.
- Nicole (9/5): A lovely homely ryokan stay. Highly recommend adding dinner for an authentic local meal - Lovely ryokan stay for our family. The owner is/was a chef and made a delicious dinner ( booked in advance) and breakfast too. Parking was right there. Very friendly and welcoming Can’t think of anything
- Giguerttv (6/5): Short and sweet 👌 - Short and sweet 👌 Short and sweet 👌
- Shota (8/5): Very good -
- Atipan (8/5): Very good -
- Ben (8/5): Very good -
(10/5): This choice is wonderful. Boss is nice. Food is great - The boss is nice. Before we come here, the boss made a call to check the thing we need. The breakfast is so great.
- Rudy (8/5): - Simple and good.
Room was clean. Location is decent.
Some considerations:
You’d have to carry your luggage up to the second or third floor.
If you are 180cm or taller, the shower would be too small for you.
Nothing particularly exceptional but nothing bad either. Good value place.
- Jeaby (10/5): The host is friendly and helpful. The room is specious and clean. The breakfast is very good. - The breakfast was very good.
- Simon (9/5): Would visit again in an instant - Really lovely room, quiet . Excellent breakfast.
- Otavio (10/5): Exceptional - Very homely and comfortable. Owner was super nice and made me feel at home Nothing really :)
