Guest Reviews
- dean (10/5): Relaxing enjoyable stay. - The staff was amazing and polite. The room was amazing too, fresh, clean with loads of room and a settee in the bay window. Breakfast was really nice and very tasty, full cooked breakfast also Loads of cereal choice, fruit, yogurht and toast. Will definately stay again. Nothing
- Agars (8/5): We enjoyed our stay and will probably try to go back - Dining room, breakfast, bedroom We enjoyed the breakfasts but didn’t have dinner, ate whilst we we out. Dinner menu was a 3 course set menu, and we rarely eat 3 courses now, perhaps a 2 course option was available but we didn’t ask.

- John (7/5): Overall we had a comfortable & relaxing stay & breakfast was good quality & very tasty. All good. - Great location not too far to travel to main resort, but we’ll away from the hustle & bustle of the town night life.
The hotel looked a little tired in places:-ie furniture in our room had hardware missing so unable to use some draws. A plug extension failed to work for phone charging. Not a lot really…just the few items above.
- Karan (10/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): - Short drive to the park and ride. Comfortable room, food was good WiFi wasn't working in our room and we couldn't get a mobile signal
- Jim (8/5): Had a lovely night in the hotel the building beautiful. - Lovely building beautiful room. Lovely bar and lounge area and the dining area was very nice decorated. Good location easy to find not far from the beach. Thought the bed was bit soft plus the pillows.
- Kerry (10/5): Amazing will be revisiting next year - The bathroom and room was amazing The breakfast could of had more options ie hot sandwiches
- Anthony (10/5): -
- Rob (9/5): Brilliant little stay for one night, staff very friendly and comfortable stay - Lovely quiet secluded spot
- Joel (8/5): -
- James (10/5): - Quality surroundings and staff Access road needs to be taken with care as road is very narrow
- Julie (10/5): Beautiful relaxing stay. - The location was so quiet. Hotel really nice as was the bedroom. Breakfast was very good nice choice. We had an evening which was very nice but found it quite expensive. Staff were very friendly but did forget things or didn’t write them down.
On a personal thing the pillows were very thin.
- Ansell (8/5): - The room The bar closed to early
- Metcalf (7/5): -
- Wood (8/5): Very good short stay - Everything was very good thank you The matress was a bit hard
- Andrew (10/5): A delightful, friendly country house hotel with lovely gardens near the North Yorkshire coast. - Peaceful, quiet location. Beautiful views and surroundings. Close, easy access to the coast. Local walks. The hotel is exceptionally well kept, clean, traditional with attentive, helpful, polite and efficient staff. The beakfast was very good indeed. I looked into the kitchen area and it was spotlessly clean - the best indicator of a smooth operation - well done. The room was spacious, warm, clean and comfortable, with views over the countryside.
Ample car parking and easy access via narrow local roads (with plenty of passing points, though we only had to avoid one single car all weekend!) to Sandsend. Nothing could have been better. It was excellent.
- Alexandra (7/5): Lovely old hall, great views driving from Dunsley to Sandsend. - Room, shower/bathroom
The building/Hall Could only book a 3 course evening meal. No bar food or option of 1 or 2 courses.
- Kathryn (9/5): - Fantastic staff Asked for some oat milk to be brought to the room due to allergy and never got it
- Alan (8/5): Great location for a short break by the beautiful Yorkshire Coast. - Good size room. Clean and tidy with comfortable bed and good size bathroom. Very good breakfast.
The hotel is well placed for the coast and local to Whitby Dinner was restricted to a 3 course set menu and not to our taste however there are local pubs and restaurants to suit everyone.
- Steve (9/5): - Location friendly helpfull staff Mattress on bed a bit lumpy
- Sarah Jane (10/5): Beautiful hotel 🩷🩷🩷 - Our stay was absolutely lovely, the hotel is so beautiful with a gorgeous interior design. The staff are so lovely. The food is delicious. The service is top notch. The rooms are beautiful. The sitting room is so elegant and the grounds and the views are so picturesque. Would highly recommend 🩷🩷🩷 There is nothing not to like.
- Maria (10/5): Will be back soon. Have stayed lots over the years. Perfect! Thank you. & to all the staff too. - Everything. Beautiful Hotel. So lovely to stay. You feel so relaxed & so well looked after. My favourite hotel of all the ones I’ve stayed in around the country. The room was warm & comfortable. Spotlessly clean. The bed huge & so comfy too. The food is wonderful. Breakfast cooked to order. Evening meal amazing.
- Bell (9/5): -
- tom (5/5): - Great setting.
Fabulous house. Bed was as hard as a brick.
Breakfast was poor.
- Carol (10/5): Excellent - All very nice ,no problems
- haggai (8/5): - Location. Classic county hotel with oak panelled comfy lounge, warm and very clean. Very good breakfast. No WiFi in room, lounge and bar. Dinging room had bleak decor and poor menu choices
- Dowler (5/5): - Charged bb plus £40 each for average evening meal which should have been £120 total not £179 and £200 on saturday not worth £179 never mind £ 200
Good trip spoiled. Nevera again
- Susan (8/5): Thoroughly enjoyable - Excellent breakfast. Wide choice of food.
Dinners we had were very good.
Staff were efficient and very pleasant
- Kofi (8/5): - Fantastic location, quiet and secluded. Lots of charm and character to be found all over the hotel Spring mattress was worn out
- Diego (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): great - breakfast was loveley good value room was great
- Smith (10/5): will be booking again for next year - stayed here before it is a great hotel the WIFI was a bit weak
- Beverly (9/5): Enjoyed our one night stay and definitely would stay again - Location and ambience of it Breakfast could of been a bit more, lovely full English breakfast but not much of a selection on other items
- Smith (8/5): -
- Neil (8/5): - Beautiful building Central heating on all night so caused noise in the pipes
- tim (9/5): - Wonderful setting and location peaceful and quiet. 5 minute drive to whitby and short walk to sandsend. attentive staff. Rooms spacious and spotlessly clean breakfast really nice with a good selection.
Would deffo recommend and we'll be staying again WiFi a bit of an issue we couldn't really get a signal which is a bit a problem as phone data signal is very weak.
- Mark (10/5): - Everything staff were amazing breakfast too . the hotel was amazing very nice place to stay. The bed was a little uncomfortable for being a double bed could possibly be better to sleep on
- Claire (7/5): It was nice to stay in the old family home.for a trip down memory lane. Photo shows my father and two of his cousins who - It used to be my father’s family hone now converted to a hotel. My family of 6 stayed there for a night and 3 other family members joined for dinner. I have to say the food was extremely average. Food that was being served up in motels in the 80’s was better. For the price and style of the hotel the food needs some serious improvement. The breakfast was similarly awful It has lots of charm but the modern extension which is now the dining room is a terrible - no soul
- Anne (9/5): Enjoyed our stay - Location it was very peaceful Approach road
- Christopher (8/5): Splendid. We had a great time. - Everything went well. The staff were pleasant and efficient. The food for breakfast and dinner was splendid. The hotel has a fine bar and lounge and attractive gardens. We knew we would only have a double bed and had hoped we could have an extra single bed, but our room (No. 11) was one of the last to be booked and was probably the only cramped one on offer. It was in the attic of the hotel and having initially been promised an extra bed they phoned to say there wasn't room for it, but we went ahead anyway. This, for us, was the only minus factor. Very pleased to have visited and we would go again, but we need twin beds or a double and a single next time. Just our cramped bedroom. Its en suite bathroom was as big as the bedroom. We visited during hot weather. We opened the windows, but there was no window near the bed.
- Ross (5/5): Overpriced and disappointed. - To be honest the only thing I liked was the room had extension cords for the plugs. The mattress needs replacing it has collapsed, the staff couldn't be bothered to arrange the garden furniture so there was nowhere to sit outside and no umbrellas to give shade.... The room was small and nothing like the pictures, the breakfast was tiny 1 of each of the meats and about 23 beans..... The toasters took an age to toast the bread..... We won't be back that's for sure.
- John (8/5): Nice location, pleasant staff, good parking and excellent breakfast. - Breakfast was excellent, room was reasonable, didn't have dinner but if returning we would include dinner. Lots of stairs, would choose lower floor next time
- Ivor (9/5): - Very good and more coffee on request Evening meal next to a music speaker on a shelf next to the table, when for a quiet meal not being forced to endure music while talking to the wife
- Mark (7/5): -
- Steven (9/5): -
- Cook (10/5): - Great location not to far away from the centre
- Michael (8/5): Pleasant and charming Country House Hotel with welcoming staff and comfortable rooms - Breakfast at Dunsley Hall was fantastic. The buffet features cereal, fruit, yogurts, toast and juices. You can also order hot food, including Full English breakfast (with a vegetarian option also available), eggs on toast, porridge and kippers with salmon. Very tasty!
We never experienced an evening meal there, though the room we had was comfortable, clean and very spacious, if not a little cold in the evenings. The Wi-Fi in the hotel is quite non-existent, so don't go there expecting to stay connected - it won't work. The signal for mobile data is also very sketchy, so this doesn't work as well as it could do. One other thing to mention is that while it wasn't a huge issue for us, the car park does feature some very tight corners to get around, so it may be best to always park in the overflow section.
- Leila (8/5): Although dearer than we hoped the room was lovely and we enjoyed our stay - Staff available were very helpful, arranging for the room to be sorted and made available as soon as possible. Also offered an upgraded room and arranged for a taxi for our party. Breakfast staff, polite and helpful, thanks Limited staff on check in, no one at reception or bar, however rooms made available as soon as possible thereafter, with an upgrade, no restaurant available, although advised of this prior to arrival. Breakfast; although plenty of choice, the Yorkshire breakfast was just ok
- graeme (10/5): -
- Laura (10/5): -
- Gordon (9/5): Faulty towers - Opted for the full english cooked to order, very nice Our friends had also booked and on arrival were told they had no reservation, dispite having the reservation number. As we visited for halloween we had to allow them to stay with us sharing our room as the hotel was full
- Eve (10/5): Fantastic Historical Experience - Beautiful country house and authentic Victorian furnishing wow ! Breakfast excellent and huge choice, served quickly. Lovely place to stay, no problem. Room a bit hot so slept with window ajar, but lovely to hear hooting owl and rusting trees outside.
- Ellie (8/5): -
- Rebecca (6/5): Pretty average. - It was a lovely looking hotel. The lounge was beautiful as was the dining room. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was good, especially the breakfast kippers! Big rooms and comfortable beds. Pretty good location too. Unfortunately our room was in dire need of repairs and redecorating. It was damp and smelt damp and the paintwork in the bathroom was peeling and mouldy. It’s a real shame as the stay could have been really lovely had the room been decent.
- Sally (7/5): -
- Susan (6/5): - All room were comfortable, clean if not a little chilly in the dinning room We have stayed several times before, but on this occasion, little things like no biscuits on tea tray, no toilet rolls in room,
no fire in lounge area. We paid £150 for the room and breakfast + £100 for meal and drinks. Sorry but we feel this is now a little more out of our reach for a one night stay
- Karen (9/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): -
- Christopher (8/5): - Friendly staff and excellent food Everywhere was very hot
- Christopher (5/5): Lovely location, clean. Just small evening portions for food - Property was lovely and a great feel to it. Plenty of parking and a nice bar. No options surrounding for food so you only have access to the restaurant which was fine. Portion size was very small for the price (£40/3 course) probably would have felt better if there was more vegetables available over 2 new potatoes each and 3 bits of broccoli. Food was nice just small.
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Raymond (7/5): I would stay at a different hotel next time. - The room The evening menu needs addressing as they only have one choice a 3 course meal for £40.00. The bar doesn’t have anybody there to serve you a very long wait.
- mark (9/5): Beautiful place lovely staff food very good - Breakfast very nice staff very helpful location lovely and quiet and only 15 minutes drive from Whitby. Nothing all very lovely indeed.
- Martyn (10/5): -
- Fairbairn (10/5): -
- Marianne (5/5): Nice staff but in need of refurb - Lovely old house in a nice setting. Staff friendly It was very run down inside, stained furniture and bathroom was poor. Bed was sagging with old lumpy pillows. Chipped crockery and food run out at the breakfast buffet.
- Anthony (7/5): RIP - Been here a lot and this is the first time it was no way near worth the money I will not be returning again it was my good place
- Adrian (1/5): Unable to stay - Unable to stay due to a fire in the kitchen Unable to stay
- Buckingham (4/5): - Room size was good. Reception was fine. The bathroom ceiling leaked when raining. A long climb to the top floor no offer of help with luggage. The breakfast was not very warm and not very good. The evening menu expensive and not that good. The staff could have been better in dining area. Very expensive. Would not recommend.
- Frank (7/5): -
- Jayne (10/5): -
- Render (10/5): -
- Lizabell (7/5): - Breakfast is good The smells of the nearby farm
- Christopher (5/5): - Lovely location for walking, breakfast was nice. Mattress on bed was unacceptable, lumpy and very uncomfortable. Decor needs a refresh and cleaning was not brilliant.
- Paul (9/5): We thoroughly enjoyed staying here (3 nights) and will definitely consider returning - Whitby can be very busy and noisy, so it’s great to be out of town. The park and ride service is excellent and within 2 miles of the hotel. The building itself is lovely with good sized, clean and comfortable rooms. The food (both breakfast and dinner) was extremely good. Would have liked more hangers in the wardrobe.
- caz (10/5): - Location and views Food waa very rich
- Derek (10/5): We will be visiting again in the near future - The accommodation was of a high standard with very friendly staff. The breakfast choice was very good and the evening meals were also of a good standard. It would have been nice to have a more variety on the evening meal choice during our three night stay.
- Rothwell (8/5): Lovely location. Lovely accommodation. Lovely Staff. - Breakfast was nice but a bit small. I booked through booking .com and was told when paying my bill when leaving that if I had booked direct an evening meal was included.i stayed 4 nights £130 a night.i ate in Sandsend as I thought £40.00 was a bit steep for evening meal.an extra £160.00 on top. Cost of Evening meal £40.00
- EMMA (9/5): Lovely stay - Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings, room comfortable and a great size. Continental breakfast on offer was sufficient. Unfortunately due to a kitchen fire we couldn't enjoy dinner on the premises and no cooked breakfast available.
- Dale (9/5): - Happy Waiting for taxis for town
- Martin (5/5): - Stunning building and location The food was generally poor. non dairy options for desert was non existent. My breakfast order was forgotten about when my wife got her poached eggs. Sat there with nothing in front of me for 20 mins until I mentioned to one of the many staff members.
- John (10/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Peter (9/5): relaxing - great room , view over gardens and distant sea view. Staff were very helpful, nice breakfast bit remote but only 10 minutes from Whitby by car
- kathryn (3/5): Not worth the money - Had parking
Bathroom nice The room we ordered a double room got twin room
No WiFi
Staff some didn’t seem bothered with us or doing there job
Breakfast tiny
Meal could only have 3 courses no other options
- jacqueline (2/5): -
- Richard (8/5): -
- Elspeth (3/5): Very disappointing - The building had a lot character. The staff were not very helpful.
The food portions were very small.
The bathroom was not clean.
It would be helpful if the website gave an indication of the average age of the guests.
- Francombe (10/5): Fabulously interesting country house. - Fabulous building, so full of character. Location perfect with lovely gardens..Staff were all very friendly .
Room was a good size and well decorated, shower was great! Nothing, will definitely return .
- Angela (5/5): - Plenty of car parking & old world charm. Bar man on the Saturday evening. Fire alarm went off both nights. Not much soundproofing. Couldn’t get an early breakfast or just some pastries to take with us at 7.30am (breakfast starts at 8am) different cooked breakfast portions on the 2 mornings.
- Amanda (6/5): Breakfast was great! - Beautiful location, stunning views. Staff were friendly and helpful. The bed was uncomfortable, very soft and the edges were collapsed/sloping.
No info in room regarding menu for restaurant.
- Tracey (6/5): A quiet out of the way location but close enough to Whitby - Lovely large room with separate lounge No WiFi- fire alarm went off at 1am for no reason
- Venus (9/5): -
- Fenna (10/5): -
- Charlotte (8/5): Beautiful room and location - Beautiful setting and the room was gorgeous WiFi was unclear, had to go down and ask about it. Restaurant wasn’t great but staff were excellent.
- kay (6/5): Beautiful building but definitely needs some tlc. - Lovely, helpful & polite staff & they were very helpful with my husbands gluten free requests during our stay. Dead flies left on windowsill during three night stay & cobwebs in room despite housekeeping coming into room every day.
Not a lot of choice on the buffet section of the breakfast.
For the evening meal there was only one choice for vegetarians & it was the same choice two nights in a row. Also it wasn’t very appetising and I thought it expensive for what we got. On the third night we ate out.
Couldn’t check out as reception staff hadn’t arrived (10.00 am) & was asked if we could wait until she arrived, but a member of staff did manage to check us out to a degree but we ended up having to complete checkout on my mobile whilst driving home.
- Patrick Peter J (8/5): - The breakfasts were very delicious and there was much choice, despite the fact that there was no english breakfast. Sometimes you had to ask for this or for that:
there was only 1 small towl when I arrived.
