Guest Reviews
- Ryden (10/5): -
- Cassandra (10/5): - Great lodging, excellent food, and onsen (including private ones on roof!). The highlight was the music after dinner, however, with guests and staff joining in the performance - one of the most fun and unique experiences of our month in Japan.
- Julie (9/5): -
- Jules (10/5): - The staff were exceptionally welcoming and accommodating. They brought our bags up to our room and served us some treats in the lobby. Our room was beautiful and included a private spring water bath. The view was great as well! The location was a bit far from downtown Matsumoto and there weren't a ton of close restaurants, but very close to a convenience store and a bus stop.
- Dhiraj (10/5): Perfect hotel just outside Matsumoto - - the Front office staff were very polite and good
- we got upgraded to a suite room on 6th floor with stunning views of the mountains
- Private onsen was amazing and just what we needed after a hectic day sightseeing
- restaurant food was also top quality- the beef and soba noodles deserve 10/10 - Nothing
- Alexandra (10/5): A wonderful memory - Wonderful service, room is comfortable and beautiful,
private onsen is fantastic. Food is great, staff are very attentive and helpful. They are also easy to coordinate with and accommodated our request for the kaiseki dinner. All in all we enjoyed our stay, definitely recommend
- Emily (10/5): 24-hours of pampering and relaxation - The staff was amazing and friendly, everything was very clean, we were treated very well. A few of the food options were unique to westerners, but we wanted to try a Japanese experience.
- Wee Hong (10/5): Superb reception by staff, room with great view and many nice onsens! - Our room had a private onsen with a great view of the Japan Alps. Room was spacious, comfortable with a great view. There were multiple onsens available for private bookings for the whole family, as well as a public bath. Checking in was a breeze. Dinner and breakfast was amazing! The kaiseki dinner was great. The kids had their own kids version of it and everything was delicious. Samue and yukatas are provided as well. The heater was only in the sleeping area, so the onsen and toilet area was quite cold in the morning.
- SUNISA (8/5): We really had a good time with the Violin mini concert at night. Also the freshly made soba from the owner of the hotel - The hotel is perfect for people on the wheelchair. There’s a private bath’s lift for the disability. None
- Seng Yew (9/5): Very happy stay with great staff, good onsen and excellent food - Onsen with some private onsen for booking. Staff is very friendly and treated my family very well. There is free music every night. No laundry services.
(10/5): Exceptional - The stuffs are very friendly and professional. The onsen is spectacular. Highly recommend this hotel!
- Kevin (7/5): Staff was very polite and helpful. They followed uo on our request and reminded us personally at the doorstep when we co - Clean and stylish Price on the higher side
- Ehud (10/5): It was a great experience. The staff greeted us very nicely. A cup of tea was served upon arrival. - Onsen was fantastic! very nice and clean. They took care of the luggage and the car. A free soft drinks was available. The room was nice and spacious. Everything was just perfect.
- Shawna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Russell (10/5): A bit far from the downtown area. The staff made up for the distance from the city center. - The staff were very professional and accommodating. They arranged for the bus to take us to the train station out of the regular schedule. They were also accommodating with making a western style breakfast for those that didn't want a traditional Japanese meal. The location was a bit far from the train station, but the facility was lovely.
- Melinda (9/5): Fantastic bed soooo comfy. Quiet location. - Lovely stay. Rooms a little older but super comfy. Bed was massive! Limited English speaking
- Dvir (10/5): Don’t miss that place. - Everything!
The hotel is just outstanding. It is a Japanese style hotel with traditional rooms. We were a family with 2 kids staying for one night. The staff did their best to make us feel like almost kings. Dinner was Japanese and also the breakfast. Amazing experience. Nothing
- Sarah (9/5): Our family had a unique and relaxing stay with kind and generous staff - The breakfast was a wonderful culinary experience. We also enjoyed the private onsen very much. Staff was extremely helpful and considerate. They were very accommodating for English speaking guests. Wished the dinner meal set was larger but it was probably because we had ordered late when we had arrived.
- Rosrin (8/5): Very good - Services
- Matt (8/5): Very good -
- Keith (10/5): Amazing and relaxing - The service was excellent the room was clean and the facilities especially the onsens were amazing Nil
- Alison (9/5): Superb - lovely staff; exceptional meals; very nice private onsen would like to have opportunity to request a vegetarian option at meals
- Aishah (9/5): Superb - Almost everything! The room is spacious and comfy, the meal (breakfast & dinner) were delicious, and i love the location as it situated not in a crowded area. Their onsens were also pretty good. And this need for be emphasized tremendously, the staff were so helpful, warm and accommodating. In an essence, Tamanoyu is a great place for a relaxing gateway. The room that i booked was not a tatami flooring, felt a bit cold at the first place, but after that i get used to it. Still loving it.
- Siu (10/5): Exceptional - Food is amazing and seasonal
Inferior design is top notch
Indoor onsen is amazing
Staffs are very friendly and helpful
- Jeff (9/5): Superb -
- Kirin (10/5): Wonderful stay! Beautiful hotel! Highly recommend! - The in-room onsen was amazing and such a wonderful experience for our family. The views from the windows and the rooftop onsen was so relaxing and private. The food was delicious, the rooms were clean and spacious, and all the amenities provided made us feel extremely comfortable. I highly recommend!!
- Fang (8/5): Very good - Food n service was good Location is far out
- Yong (8/5): Good - Breakfast and dinner were both excellent. There was a smoking room on each floor so of course the smell would get embedded in the carpets . Best to re-carpet and get rid of the smoking rooms.
- J (9/5): Superb - Japanese style room with private onsen - lovely, clean space. Really helpful staff, very friendly greeting at door as well as seeing you out after checkout. Everything I needed was there, and the food was lovely.
- Andjelija (9/5): Superb -
- Pooja (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kathleen (9/5): Excellent traditional Ryokan with great food and live music entertainment. - Half board dinner and breakfast was excellent quality and also varied by day. Live music after dinner was a real highlight. We booked early morning private outside onsen which was nice. Room was spacious and well equipped. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The electric chair was a bit odd. The location is on edge of town so not really walkable to main attractions. There is a bus that goes into town about 5mins walk away.
- M (10/5): Very nice room and friendly staff! - Friendly staff. No outdoor sitting area.
- Karen (10/5): Authentic Japanese experience - Beautiful traditional experience with tatami mat flooring, futon beds and hot baths. The service was excellent and 8 course dinner wonderful. An authentic Japanese experience.
- Narong (8/5): Very good -
- Hayley (10/5): A brilliant Ryokan experience - A traditional ryokan where the owners still hand make the soba noodles for dinner. Great private onsen, included in your stay and amazing food.
A bus from Matsumoto station runs frequently and stops outside the property.
The staff were so considerate and helpful. A great stay overall! Nothing!
- Yumi (10/5): Exceptional - We had a large comfortable barrier free room with two smart tvs.
- Irin (9/5): Superb -
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful ryokan just a few minutes drive from Matsumoto centre - amazing hosts and staff. Loved the private roof top onsen that my wife and I could share. Nice kaiseki dinner of local ingredients including some excellent wagyu and hand made soba noodles made by the owner. Our room was beautiful, with lots of attention to detail. We had to leave early in the morning and they were so kind in providing us with a packed lunch each since we missed breakfast Nothing at all
- Nikki (10/5): Exceptional - Large, spacious room, bathroom, clean/feels new
Great ryokan experience with the modern conveniences
- Pasana (10/5): a must stay in Azama onsen area - excellent service, great food and lovely activities for guests to join nothing
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Janet (10/5): Absolutely fantastic and 5 stars for service! - Absolutely loved this hotel. Modern Ryokan style with amazing customer service from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. We were greeted at our taxi and our luggage was taken to our rooms. We were offered a hot towel, tea and a sweet on arrival while we completed the checkin process seated on lounges. We were provided traditional hotel pyjamas (Jinbei) with socks and slippers throughout our stay. Our son left his wallet in the taxi but the hotel arranged its immediate return (they brought it to our room) and we received a small local gift on departure. Room was comfortable, clean and well serviced. The hotel called a taxi for our return to the station. It was about 5km from the train station so we used a taxi, which was very reasonable. There was a bus available but we opted for the taxi instead. Couldn't fault anything else!
- Amyeof (10/5): Highly recommend staying there if you visit Matsumoto. - We have traveled to Japan many times, but this was our first time staying at a ryokan and it was so much more than we anticipated. Every staff member was so friendly, kind, and spoke English. We booked a corner suite with a private onsen. As others have mentioned, the check-in process is very individualized and leisurely. We were asked to sit down, they brought manju and tea, and a staff member (Reimi) explained everything to us. Reimi also escorted us to the suite and provided more information about it and the onsen. Dinner and breakfast were outstanding with multiple courses at each meal. Even though food is served in their dining hall, each party has it's own partitioned eating area (with shoji doors). Our son didn't feel well toward the end of dinner and missed dessert. We were surprised that our server saved his dessert and presented it to him at breakfast. As we checked out, the manager gifted us with temari ball trinkets. If you are visiting Matsumoto, Nagano I would highly recommend staying over night at Hotel Tamanoyu. The only drawback was the shower water wasn't hot, but we didn't complain. We were just so happy to be there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent - The best Ryokan experience. The room is spacious, staffs are very friendly and try their best to make the guest feel like back home. The onsen is good, only tried the public one, but is good enough. The dinner is the highlight, the best we ever had. Beef, handmade soba etc... and the after dinner concert is a surprise. Really enjoy the stay , wish can stay longer
- Lilienthal (10/5): - the private bath on the roof with view of the city.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Luxury service and luxury price to match - Traditional luxury service in unique rooms. You do pay for it: very expensive!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - They had 4 outdoor, rooftop private Onsens and 2 indoor public Onsens. We spent two nights and used the private Onsens four times. Absolutely fabulous. The rooms were traditional Japanese style Ryokens and it was something I would recommend for everyone visiting to give a try. The hotel was exceptionally clean.
- J S (10/5): Great Stay - Excellent small Ryokan with choice of Onsen facilities. Great service and very good food. Only drawback is that location is a long way from Matsumato Castle, the station and other tourist spots. No problem if you have a car but taxis are few and far between.
- Shelley (10/5): - Beautiful traditional Japanese hotel with some western touches to make visitors feel welcome. Service was outstanding by very friendly staff
- Ayla (8/5): - Love the private onsen, the design of the room, the staff’s service. But the location of the place is real bad because it does not have shuttle service and the public bus’s timing is also bad because of its Low frequency.
- Jennifer (10/5): - This was an amazing experience at a beautiful hotel. My husband and I remember our trip here often and would love to go back
- Erick M (10/5): Amazing staff and food = incredible experience - This was our "ryokan experience" on our recent trip around Japan, and what an experience! Kota and his staff were incredibly gracious and accommodating. The rooms are understandably spartan, but that's the point. The washoku meals were fabulous. We are not breakfast eaters, but we couldn't help but make an exception here. The same goes for the President's soba. Both the public and private onsens are well maintained and a welcome respite after days of travel or walking the streets of Matsumoto. Of the four hotels we stayed in around Japan, this is the one we will definitely be returning to!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great for family and couple travelling in Matsumot - Good onsen hotel in Matsumoto. But will likely need to access by car or taxi from Matsumoto.
- Pong (10/5): Good hotel in matsumoto - Very good hotel with hot spring with Japanese style breakfast and dinner, especially soba noodles of this area.
- Dee (10/5): Fantastic hotel and customer service - We had a large Japanese style corner room with open-air bath. The bath had windows that opened, so you could soak whilst looking out over the city to the mountains. I just wish we'd had more time to enjoy it, (we were only there overnight).
The staff were expecting us and we were given a wheatgrass drink and cake whilst checking in.
The room was large and the futons comfy. Giving us washbags with complementary towels was a nice touch, as was providing hot water in a thermos for us to make tea.
The hotel provided a vegetarian meal for me and my younger son, (and gave us a cash refund as what we ate was less than the 'half board' kaiseki). They were able to cater for my older son's peanut/nut allergies. Breakfast was spectacular, (a vegetarian Japanese breakfast was provided for me and my younger son.
We booked an eve session in one of the rooftop onsens at no extra cost.
There is a lovely gift shop in the lobby.
The hotel is easy to find by using the no.32 bus at stop no.1 outside Matsumoto station. Get a map from the hekpful staff in tourist information, (in the station) and ask them to mark the hotel on the map.
Don't expect to do anything outside the hotel in the evening. It's in a residential area - the hotel IS the destination.
I would go back to Matsumoto just to stay in this hotel - it was that good. I have stayed in some pretty nice hotels, at various places around the world, and this was up there with the bes for me. It is just a really lovely place.
