- winfried (2/5): Absolut nicht empfehlenswert! - Einzig empfehlenswert die Bar mit geschätzten 1000 Whiskysorten. Unfreundlicher Empfang, abgewohntes Zimmer, sehr laut von der Strasse auch bei geschlossenem Fenster, ebenso laut von allen Nachbarzimmern, sogar über uns. Praktisch kein Internet. Badezimmer grindig. Frühstück nur auf Bestellung, keinerlei Kuchen oder Süsses, nur kalter Toast. Und das für viel Geld!

- Robert (9/5): The receptionist/ bartender/hostess Olivia makes this place shine with her friendliness and exceptional customer - Perfect location in the middle of town with easy access to dining, shops, buses, and tourist attractions. There is an excellent bar right on the property and a pretty garden view from the breakfast room. Hotel was clean, quiet and had nice views from the bedroom window. No elevator, uncomfortable bed and no safe in the room. Breakfast was made to order, but very limited menu. At more than $200/night; I expected better amenities.

Reception screamed and said I get pest control which was scary! The manager came and said it was probably just a pigeon and they would sort it, no apology at all! And certainly no suggestion of a refund. As we were asked to pay upfront the attitude was very much take it or leave it! Not what we would expect from an expensive mistake!

- James (10/5): Grand, cosy and right in the heart of Kirkwall! - Thoroughly lovely hotel in the heart of Kirkwall, love the décor throughout - felt very grand! Room was a great size, very comfortable and good sized windows overlooking the street - handy for Orkney's changeable weather! Staff were lovely, very helpful and a good breakfast served in a lovely dining room. Can't wait to come back here!

- Paul (10/5): - Our visit to the Orkneys on our adventure through Scotland wasn't planned, but with a last minute booking we were lucky enough to be able to spend a couple nights at the wonderful Orkney Hotel! This historic inn far exceeded our expectations. We particularly loved spending the evenings in the bar tasting some of the literal thousands of bottles of whiskey decorating the walls. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the Scottish breakfast was delicious. I would highly recommend a stay at the Orkney Hotel on your next visit!

Staff friendly but could do with more training. I pre-booked evening meal times but was not in formed that there was no food on Sunday evening. The room service was incomplete...dirty cups left in sink and tea/coffee not replenished one day. Bacon and tomato at breakfast not cooked properly any day.

As other reviewers have said the barman/waiter guy in the dirty 3 piece suit jacket seriously lets the whole place down with one of the worst attitudes I've ever seen in a hospitality role. He is consistently rude, unable to pore a pint and passive aggressive with literally zero manners. Which is a shame because the food is actually Alryt but I'd rather not have to speak to him or let him waiter my food through from the kitchen as I question his hygiene based on the dirty clothes . Utterly shocking for someone working "front of house" The hotel rooms themselves are tired but do the job. The breakfast is good and the staff except that
- 842cats (10/5): Orkney Hotel, a wonderful stay! - I was travelling alone and staying at the Orkney Hotel was a great experience. The room was clean, well-stocked and comfortable. Staff friendly and attentive. The meals were good and breakfast overlooking the beautiful garden was lovely. It was a great base to explore Kirkwall and further afield in Orkney.

- 505rosc (2/5): One of the worst hotels ever - This is one of the worst hotels we have ever stayed in. What a shame in such a lovely location. We were greeted by a scruffy receptionist wearing dirty clothes and with filthy fingernails - yuk! On arriving into the bedroom, I noticed there was a large stain on the quilt cover - yuk! (the hotel did find a clean one to replace this after we complained). The TV didn't work properly and was positioned so awkwardly in the room anyway it wasn't really watchable. Breakfast was almost inedible. What had been done to the scrambled egg is anyone's guess! Most of it we wouldn't have given to a dog. The receptionist was seen regularly smoking outside just by the entrance to the hotel - how unprofessional can you get! It needs an urgent visit by the Hotel Inspector - until then I would recommend to stay well away from this hotel.
- Z2135OOaprilr (10/5): Best whiskey bar in town. - We went here for dinner and planned to move onto another bar bit we found that the Orkney Hotel to be a great place to chill with friends for the night. I have never seen so many whiskeys in the one place. The staff and customers were very welcoming and friendly and this made us stay for the night instead of moving on. Will definitely be back here again.

The room is small, the bathroom is small, whiteout shower but with an adapted shower. 2 sinks with cold and hot water like in 50 years of the other century. WC does not work well. Advertise for a big breakfast: it was just a simple English breakfast with not a lot of choice. No cappuccino, no espresso, an orribile caffè. At the end: NOT APPROVED!
- margs861 (4/5): You can’t polish a turd - Where to start??? If you enjoy listening to your neighbour snore and fart this is the place for you! The paper thin walls are a dream to be able to hear next door breathing during the night. Love people slamming doors? Get yourself a room booked, as there’s no resistance to any doors, enjoy being woken up at 2, 3 even 4 am. Do you love decor? Then you’ll love the way the wall paper hangs off the wall, the dated furniture, the windows that won’t close properly. Cleanliness freak? Well, come and check out the dirty mouldy bathrooms, the stained carpets, and most of all the kettles! Don’t forget to watch out for the personal hygiene of a particular staff member, when you know you know 🧐 Enjoy semi frozen chips and cheap £1 mixed veg? Then tantalise your taste buds here and enjoy an evening meal in the bar. As ever the optimist, a big plus was the vast majority of staff were friendly (and clean) the breakfast was also pretty good, although the continental section has room for improvement.

- alidotsinclair (4/5): Food fine enough, Manager/head barman service bad - Attended for dinner and a couple of drinks. Manger/barmen with the chain around his neck needs some hospitality training/ attitude change. One guy was his first shift, and yes first pint not fantastic as it wouldnt be in a new place, but the next one was a lot better and he is a cracking guy and a keen leaner. Bar manager guy however should've had a new start observe for an hour or so at least rather than being let loose from the off, surely the basics of teaching someone/managing someone. He also badmouthed said new start to people at the bar, when said new start popped away for whatever reason, which is just unprofessional. Also it is always a reflection on the person who is the boss and trainer rather than the new employee. We said the manager that the first pint was flat, which it very clearly was, and asked for a new one. We were however assured by the manager that it was just the glasses and that he wa working his way throuhh the bad ones, even though he saw that new start hadn't quite started the pint correctly and that it needed a couple of seconds of running before going in the glass. Manager instead of starting fresh just finished off the first pint, especially after it had been poured and then clearly evidenced that it was flat, just pour a new one which another publican had a good pint of si it was possible. Manager however just poured it into a new glass. Which again failed. Husband had to swirl the pint a few times before any sip taken to make it in any way palatable. Second pint received was far better as the new start had got the knack by then. However I would've expected his manager to just do a fresh pint for the first one, rather than just swap the glass when it was so clearly a flat pint. It wouldn't have exactly cost the business much and did leave us doubting their service an quality thereof. At end of night I went to bar to pay and as I got close to bar the bill was just already presented to me without my asking for it first. I get it that that was obviouslywhat I was up for but no eye contact qas made by said manager or acknowledgement and it was just slapped down in front of me and said manager stepped away. Just basic manners at end of day. Obviously didn't tip which he didn't even seem to want to try and gain, as the bill value had already presented in card machine a few seconds after the bill I hadn't asked for was presented to me. Not that after the manager's service we were going to tip anyway. We did however want to tip the new start who is a sound guy and a quick teach which is what you want in hospitality but didn't have the spar echange to pass to him directly rather than via car which would likely go to the business. Hopefully he can put up with his boss going forward. Food was tasty enough. Just service from the manager ruined the experience.
- Paul (2/5): Look elsewhere and avoid. - Location, parking, staff and breakfast First room 101A -you open the door and are greeted by a long winding narrow corridor that ends in a room slightly bigger than the bed. No room for cases or to sit down (staff stated “this is one of the new room”). We asked to be moved and they obliged. Room 207, we were told was a more traditional room layout but was “an old room, yet to be refurbished“. You pay the same for either old or new which is ridiculous. The room was larger and suited us but that was the only good part. Toilet took 10 minutes to refill and would not fully flush, shower pressure was so low that you can’t get your head under enough to get it wet. TV could not get enough signal on any channel and may as well be removed. Bed was so soft and old you spent the night both rolled together in the middle and we are not big people. The hotel is very old but that does not give reason to be selling rooms like this. There was no one working reception when we left, just a key box and no phone in the room. Frankly we could not wait to leave anyway. Worst stay anywhere we have booked worldwide, at exorbitant prices.
- duncan_ireland (6/5): Service issues - Royal Cask Whisky Bar - Very much a review for the bar/restaurant rather than the hotel. We popped in for an evening meal as non-residents and were left feeling a little flat by the experience. The senior staff member (owner? manager?) seemed harried and had a brusque manner; very much as if having customers was an inconvenience. The menu offered a good amount of choice and the food was decent. I ordered a thai red curry and what came out was edible and tasty but was most definitely not a thai red curry. They have a fantastic, well-priced whisky list, but we elected not to stay and explore it as the service simply wasn't conducive to settling in and relaxing.

Within a few minutes the fire alarm was going off - but apparently it was okay, because that floor had nobody staying there… It was freezing, dated, moldy and dirty. All for the princely sum of £160. The only redeeming features were the breakfast and the lady serving the breakfast.

- Jane (5/5): Would not use again as too expensive for what it was though the staff was really lovely - Location was good and the bar and the meals at the bar was good Rooms too small needs a bit of loving care in the maintenance getting to the room could be a issue for people with mobility issues and lacked the little things you would expect for the price like bedside lights wallpaper not peeling away and mould in the shower tray
- Christopher (8/5): Good location, value for money, really good tableserved breakfast - Very friendly and helpful lady who worked at reception in the evening and the following morning in the breakfast room. Good location Parking, although a bit cumbersome to access It was generally good. It’s an old building in an area very exposed to the weather so not surprisingly this showed somewhat.
- Deborah (8/5): The pricing has not kept up with the aging of the property - Perfect location. Very friendly and helpful staff Overpriced. Beautiful reception area. Our first room was very clean and well set up but wallpaper starting to lift. But it was up two flights of stairs one very narrow and down a long narrow hall. However the receptionist kindly moved us to a newly renovated room on the street which was great but no outlook and no wifi. All would be exceptable if it wasn’t by far the most expensive room we booked on our trip to Orkney.

- Anna (9/5): I loved Orkney and the stay was comfortable - It was authentic, decor was in keeping with what I expected The staff were lovely and made sure we had a breakfast to take with us as we were on the early ferry The bathroom was an awkward size , the door to the bathroom basically was in the way to use the loo !

- Walter (6/5): The Hotel is in a good position for the local amenities but the we stayed in needs redecorated. - The staff were very helpful. The room was in need off redecoration with the wallpaper and ceiling paper coming away from the walls and ceiling. The bathroom was very poor with low pressure and a loose shower head cradle.
- Perce (10/5): Excellent. Highly recommended. P & D. Australia. - Spacious, comfortable, and adequately equipped with great staff. Good use of local products in meals. Excellent central location. Nothing really. However it was popular.
- mccue1690 (6/5): Nothing special - Nice clean comfortable room but really needs some form of bedside light. The room was either lit up like Wembley or pitch black. Breakfast was delicious but very sparse, continental offerings were very limited and if not down first basically non existent. We had one meal in the Cask bar. Food good but really need to replenish the sauce sashes more regular. We asked for ketchup and vinegar as there was none on the container. Two sachets of ketchup appeared but to this day we’re still waiting for vinegar!! We got the impression a lot on this visit that staff didn’t really care. ( I exclude the room cleaning staff from this, they were excellent)
- Leanne (10/5): Lovely stay in the centre of town - Very accommodating and friendly host, nothing was too much trouble. Our dogs were also made to feel very welcome! Bed was very comfortable and the room was clean and warm. Breakfast was amazing, nicest haggis I’ve ever tasted.

- David (8/5): Adequate hotel - One night only. Accommodation was adequate and comfortable. High season, so a bit on the pricy side. Can not comment on food as I arrived late and kitchen was closed already. Location is good for exploring Kirkwall on foot.
- overthehill79 (8/5): Convenient location to central downtown - The twin room we were assigned (401) when we arrived was located on the street level of a building across the street. It is a spacious room with comfortable beds, nice shower and adequate heating, although we turned it off when we retired. The staff is friendly and helpful when asking about restaurants or sights. Breakfast was served on the second floor in the main building starting at 0730 which worked well with our tour schedule. The view from the breakfast area was of gardens behind the hotel.
- Phil (8/5): Orkney Hotel - The staff were so friendly and accommodating when we checked in. It was quite expensive for a 1 night stay and breakfast in the morning was a shambles. I would have rated this place lower if it wasn't for the staff at check in.
