Guest Reviews
- Seth (10/5): - Room was spacious, clean, bed was comfortable. Bathroom great. The food was great too. Will go back again.
- Kyle (10/5): - Faculty is always helpful, interactive & generally friendly.
CU next year!
- Charles (8/5): nice place - Gret place right on main street . Close enough to walk out for breakfast or ice cream
- Chris (10/5): - Reading the other reviews on this property, one may shy away from it. Those reviews could not be further from truth, then what we experienced at the Publick House. This hotel is quaint and has old world charm. Our room was oversized with a separate sitting area with a pullout sofa. All the rooms including the bathroom were clean and well appointed. The staff is quite friendly and very accommodating. Very nice terrace/balcony for guests to sit outside. Although there is no breakfast service, there are Keurig’s in every room that are replenished each day. The staff will also direct you to The French pastry shop or Sally Lund’s, which are both within walking distance. We did not have a chance to eat at PH restaurant, but the menu looked diverse and interesting. Still can’t understand all the bad reviews.
- Margaret (8/5): A hotel with character. - It was a suite with style. I would suggest upgrading your towels and providing some more hand and wash clothes. The mattresses were a bit lumpy. Still, it was an interesting place to stay.
- Helen (10/5): - Nice atmosphere, great service, great food.
Had superb time.
- Cammi (8/5): - Very nice boutique hotel.
- Susan (10/5): - This historic building from the early 1800's is loaded with charm. They have history all over the walls. The layout is quaint, with various sitting areas throughout. The room was beautiful and clean. There was a living room and separate bedroom. The bed was very comfortable. They provided a coffeemaker and a small fridge. It was easy to walk to the shops. There is a steakhouse attached. Overall, staying here was a pleasant experience.
- Janice (10/5): - This is an awesome hotel!! The room was absolutely wonderful...huge, beautiful, very comfy, a huge sitting room I did not expect. 2 TV's! I never heard a sound in that room. Wonderful windows with light coming in. I totally recommend this place. Staff is great, restaurant and bar downstairs was great, with good food, friendly bartenders. Best hotel room I have stayed in. Only suggestion would e to get better towels but what I had was sufficient.
- John (8/5): - Everything was great except the bathroom was sort of designed for shorter people.
- Sarah (10/5): - very nice place
- Gail (6/5): - The Publick House is fine for a one-night stay however would not recommend it if staying long. The room, while clean, has a very old feel and the furniture accents that making the room dark and a little depressing.
- Click mucky.ciatabmicirreles.tk Go (6/5): - We really enjoyed the uniqueness of the property and it was clean. Notes: 1 - you have a great restaurant and bar, it would be good to have information about these in the room. 2 - there were no instructions for the tv and we were not able to change the channel, 3 - if the shower takes 15 minutes to provide hot water it would be good to have a note stating that in the room, 1 of us had a tepid shower not knowing it would eventually get hot. 4-it's always nice to have glassware in a room.
- Jennifer (10/5): - This was our second stay at the Publick House- It is a unique historic building. The rooms are spacious, the staff are friendly and helpful, and it is very quiet at night. We enjoy strolling around Chester, and the location is convenient when in the area visiting family.
- Leah (2/5): Discouragement from booking. - Pictures speak a thousand words. Unfortunately, stench is difficult to convey. The bedding had a strong perspiration odor.
Be advised, no one on premises for assistance and the area is a dark. Very poor lighting to operate entry key. I deem this area unsafe for women.
The building may be considered historical, the exterior and restaurant deceive the consumer because they are well maintained. The rooms are appalling.
This is very unfortunate and I hope the necessary changes will be addressed.
For those looking to stay in an aesthetically pleasing environment the decor is ghastly and senseless.
I have over 50 pictures which the system does not allow more than eight.
- Joseph (8/5): - Good location. Couldn’t figure out tv.
- Leanne (4/5): - Property and Main Street area were cute. Easy parking and enjoyed dinner at the restaurant. But overall didn’t meet expectations for what we paid. Room was huge but weren’t even given hand soap for sink or 2 full towel sets. Asked for both but never got them. Rooms were pretty bare bones but basic suite was huge.
- Colleen (2/5): - HORRIFIC!
Smells like wet dog - I am allergic to dogs
Expedia told me:
No pets
Restaurant ON SITE
None is true
No Restaurant - the place is a complete dump
2x2 tile shower
Horrible bedding
Smells so badly
I had to leave in 10 minutes
Expedia did NOTHING to rectify this
The manager said "I guess you are stuck here"
Disgusting customer service.
Extrememly unprofessional frm both Expedia and this location.
I travel for sales with a large team and we all will NEVER use Expedia again and we are nation wide.
What a shame.
Good luck Expedia.
- Carolann (6/5): - Room was clean and comfortable but lacking basic amenities like soap, cell phone plug, TV worked but sound was terrible, AC was very noisy. Staff was pleasant and helpful when asked questions but you sort of had to push your way through the restaurant staffing area to get to room. And there was no room service - coffee, water, shampoo (used in lieu of soap) not replenished.
- Brian (8/5): - We had a very nice stay.
- Greg (4/5): - Cheap towels, window treatments that don’t block the light, noisy fans, hooks without pictures on the walls…. What is going on here?
- Mary (10/5): - Have stayed multiple times, staff is great, rooms are big, clean, tons of character, restaurant is excellent!
- Richard (8/5): - very nice property..convenient location in downtown Chester.
- Robby (8/5): - Loved it
- Jennifer (10/5): - Very unique historical building. Very nice large suites
- Robby (8/5): - I very much enjoyed staying at the property.
- Dorothy (10/5): My New Hotel Favorite - With our club’s 36th Antiques in Long Valley, I had to find a close by hotel for an overnight stay. Very fortunate to learn that the Public House Hotel in Chester was the perfect location. My stay was wonderful, comfortable and just what I needed. I will return.
- Michael (10/5): - I ALWAYS ENJOY MY STAYS AT PUBLICK HOUSE HOTEL! HOWEVER, THIS TIME I HAD A PROBLEM....NO HOT WATER IN THE SHOWER !! NOT EVEN LUKE WARM---ICE WATER !! VERY DISAPPOINTING....
- Deborah (10/5): Lovely historic inn in beautiful small town - This is a historic inn. It has a nice restaurant on the lower level. We were not there long, but I had a good impression.
- Lauren (10/5): - Enjoyed our stay.
Nice antique restoration of the property
- Verified traveler (4/5): Nice property, poor check-in process - The check-in process was awkward. The only agent to check us in was too busy gossiping with bar flies and would not take the time to recognize us. When she finally ended her chatting she did not welcome us. Almost seemed like our business was a burden to her.
- john (2/5): - No was there to check us in. Place was completely closed and there was no one at front desk. Called the contact and phone rang but no one was there to answer.
- John (8/5): - Very convenient to my destination.
- susan (8/5): - always problems with tv have to get staff to get a program .impossible. for me
- Kathy (8/5): - Building was charming, our guest room was huge. Towels were old and thin and worn. Staff was friendly but food at dinner was very mediocre.
- Teresa (6/5): - Location of the property is great. Staff were very helpful however needed much more training too many mistakes were made with scheduling and billling.
- Wendy (10/5): Great stay - The location and staff were wonderful. The convenience of having a wonderful restaurant and bar downstairs was great. It was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. I would highly recommend it.
- Robert (2/5): Hotel overbooked; wouldn't answer phone or email - Property overbooked rooms to over twice capacity and would not answer phone all day. Had to call emergency phone number posted on outside of property at midnight to be told that I did not actually have a room. Hotels.com said property failed to notify them/turn off taking reservations resulting in this fiasco for many like myself.
- elizabeth (6/5): - I appreciated that after checking in I was escorted close to my room.
- David (10/5): - Amazing location, wonderful staff, huge rooms, great food…..what else could we ask for!!!!!
- Teresa (10/5): - Very charming hotel with a great staff! Loved the balcony overlooking the town.
- Beau (10/5): - Two thumbs up for Publick House and Chester NJ!
- Michael (2/5): - You confirmed the room Monday and there was no room available at check in on my 25th wedding anniversary. How does this happen? Devastated
- Fredrick (2/5): - Expedia messes up my family trip.
My trip had to come to a halt because the hotel and Expedia were out of sync. The hotel had no availability and had to turn back home after waiting in New York for 6 hours in search of an alternative because the hotel called me to say they had no availability.
The chartered arrangement cost me money and the risk of going back home in the middle of the night.
- Robin (10/5): - Very nice place. Local little shops all within walking distance.
- Mary (2/5): Freezing - Heater broken 58 degrees in the morning in the room. We were freezing. They did end up crediting stay as they should have. Restaurant was great delicious.
- Audrey (10/5): - Great stay, easy check in and check out! Restaurant downstairs with a great bar. Old historic building with charm, room was quaint and clean and the staff very helpful. If you’re looking for a place brand new, you’re missing out on history and charm.
- Caroline (10/5): - We were so pleased with the Publick House. I used to live in the area many years ago and was excited to experience it.
When we arrived, we were welcomed by smiling faces. The staff was very accomodating.
Unfortunately we stayed there after the restaurant closed. Our next trip we will make sure we are there when the restaurant is open!
We will be back.
- Eric (6/5): - Quaint small hotel in a historic building. Nothing bad but nothing outstanding. Rooms adorned with older furnishings - gave a bed and breakfast feel. Very quiet and I was able to clearly hear a conversation in the next room.
- Daniel (10/5): - Cool hotel, old school yet clean, spacious rooms
- Brian (10/5): Stay in this Historic Inn - Amazing historic room. Spacious and comfortable.
Super friendly folks. The restaurant downstairs was awesome. A really great stay for my wife and me.
- Mark (10/5): Great hotel in a great small town - My wife and I lived in a neighboring town for 22 years and were quite familiar with the Publick House and its history. It was a bar and restaurant for most of our time there but the hotel was never open.
When we needed to stay in town for a short visit we were surprised to see the hotel was open and we were eager to check it out.
We were very surprised by the very spacious and comfortable accommodations. The couch in the living room and bed were very comfortable. The new owners did an excellent job with this hotel.
- Christian (10/5): Great historic and centrally located hotel - Check-in was a bit slow, but otherwise excellent experience and location
- jorge (8/5): - Nice hotel in a very nice part of town.
- William (10/5): - Really charming old carriage house. Comfortable bed, large living area.
- Wvansickle (10/5): - Great hotel manager and bar staff. Kool rooms.
- Patricia D (6/5): - This is a beautiful property in a very cute town. They stay was nice. They are short staffed so there was no breakfast. It would be good to have a list of local places to eat and things to do. The place has a lot of potential. Very unique rooms with a lot of character. Cleaning staff was very nice.
- Terri (4/5): - We were double booked so we had to get a different room 😞. There was black mold in both closets.
- Joe (10/5): - Nice spot. Close to friends and family.
- Harry (10/5): - This hotel is a gem! Listed on the National Historic Register, it also has an excellent restaurant. The rooms are actually suites with original fireplaces. The hotel is situated on the Main St. in a beautiful old town with shops.
Super nice.
- Michele (6/5): - At night when the restaurant closed there seemed to be literally no one working at the hotel. Someone was locked out of their room and could not find anyone to help or anyone to call. It was very strange.
- Christina (8/5): Charming old inn with a friendly staff - The staff was very helpful. The room/suite was charming and roomy. But, the room was flooded with light during the night even with the blinds completely closed. Also, if you say check-in is at 11:00, the front door should be open and someone ready to assist you.
- Jacque (6/5): Lack of detail - Front desk is rarely staffed. Signage is suggested to help guests find their way. Room prep was lacking. We only had one towel, no shampoo, and dirty glasses. The TV was difficult to turn on.
The location of the hotel is great and the size of the rooms is fantastic. We also thought there was attention to cleanliness.
But the biggest issue was attention to detail on the guest experience.
- Aaron (6/5): - Property is a bit outdated but for the price this hotel stay is decent. In the heart of the Chester town everything was in easy walking distance. My only gripes are the blinds are horrible they don’t block out any light at night it looks like Times Square. And no shampoo. Outside of those decent stay nice area
- Michael (6/5): Much potential - The good: huge room, private, quiet, friendly. The bad: worn, bathroom was unclean and it took a while to correct it, lack of amenities.
- Jack (10/5): - I've stayed at this location for 30 years when I am in town, rooms have been well maintained and clean. Downstairs is a "steakhouse", I did not dine there, management and staff kind of turned me off.
- Garrett (10/5): - Great place that is highly underated. Cool 1810 building with great fine dining and massive brick walled rooms.
