Guest Reviews
- Alexander Vezhnevets (10/5): -
- Heather (10/5): A wonderful experience - It was a true Japanese Inn. Beautiful. The staff were wonderful and so friendly. The Japanese bath was so nice. It’s a must stay in Kyoto.
- zitzaki (10/5): - We stayed here for one night and absolutely loved the experience. The ryokan is beautiful, cozy, and full of history. The hosts were incredibly kind. They showed us around the 100 year old ryokan and even prepared a small tea ceremony for us, which was such a lovely surprise.
Our room, Satsuki, with its private garden was peaceful and relaxing. The evening onsen was wonderful. The hot water, the scent of wood, and the calm atmosphere made it unforgettable.
We also enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast very much. Everything was prepared with great care. We will definitely come back again for a longer stay.
- Sabrina (10/5): Esperienza tradizionale stupenda - Personale gentilissimo e disponibile, ambienti puliti e ordinati. Esperienza tradizionale molto bella
- Narcleet (10/5): -
- Jessica (10/5): Magical - Wonderful joyful hosts Would be nice to also have a pajama set option or option to eat in room.
- Ella (10/5): Peaceful, lovely stay - the staff were exceptional! - The breakfast was 10/10!!! Was a delicious traditional feast - super fresh ingredients
The room (Tsuki) was lovely and spacious - it was a warm and peaceful environment to stay in
We tried both onsens and they were AWESOME.
Wish we could have stayed longer :) If I had to critique anything, it would be that the pillows were a little stiff! But that is just personal preference!

- Paul (10/5): An amazing experience and a warm welcome. - Beautiful historic ryokan with an atmospheric central garden. Very helpful and pleasant staff explained the history of the place and the logistics of our stay. No complaints for those looking for a ryokan experience.
Ci siamo sentiti coccolati. Grazie e speriamo di tornare presto!
Jlenia e Marco Niente!
- Syreeta (10/5): The perfect tranquil stay in the middle of a busy travel schedule. - The ladies at Toshiharu Ryokan took exceptional care of us during our stay. We only stayed overnight, just for a taste of a Ryokan experience. The beds they set up for us were the most comfortable beds we slept in during our 9-day trip. The traditional Japanese breakfast they prepared for us was stellar and ended up being my favorite overall meal in Japan. The room that we booked had private access to the small but tranquil garden. Though be aware other rooms overlook the garden, so while they do not have access, they can see you while out there. The baths were soooo relaxing and smelled amazing due to the wood used to build them.
I would 100% stay here again, and likely will, during my next Kyoto trip.
- X4684MErichardk (10/5): Authentic and welcoming - We stayed for 3 nights and couldn’t recommend it more! We had the front room which had a private toilet and garden. We really liked the place but what we loved the most was the hospitality of the staff. They were so sweet and welcoming, they couldn’t do more to make our stay special. Would highly recommend it and we would definitely stay again.
- Matthew (9/5): Friendly Ryokan experience in central Kyoto - Delicious breakfast
Super friendly and welcoming hosts
Proper Ryokan experience
Great location Nothing really! Was v happy.
- Mark (10/5): -
Rien
- Eden (10/5): Authentic, zen & lovely- this is a very special property in Kyoto - It was serene and beautiful and the people who worked there were beyond wonderful such a fantastic experience for us and a memory we will always cherish. People who stay here should expect to be conscious of cultural expectations & follow set traditions to support the environment of the ryokan
- Grietje (10/5): Fantastic hotel at an excellent location away from the crowds. - Such a lovely boutique hotel with very attentive staff. We stayed in the apartment, which has a shower, which suited us well as we like to get up early and start exploring. The hotel is in a great location for transport and an array of fine eateries nearby. Make sure you book a table, as many require this in Kyoto. Everything was absolutely great here. I can highly recommend this.
- Keith (10/5): A wonderful and unique Japanese experience 🇯🇵 - We had a wonderful time staying at Toshiharu Ryokan during our trip to Kyoto. The staff are organised and extremely friendly, who went out of their way to ensure you were comfortable and enjoyed your stay. It is a unique offering for anyone looking to have a real Ryokan experience. A traditional style breakfast can be included which is a must try. My taste buds are sensitive to seafood early in the morning, but they very kindly offered to change it to a different meat without any hassle. We would highly recommend this location.
* The location is also extremely clean.
- Carly (10/5): Memorable experience in Kyoto - Everything, from the warm welcome to the accommodation itself - bathroom and breakfast were amazing. A perfect stay which made our visit to Kyoto very special. N/A
- ken (7/5): - Wanted to communicate before paying the initial fee - booking.com did not allow
Tatamimattor i rummen. Vacker innergård. Fantastisk hjälpsam personal.
- Noma (10/5): Beautiful Ryokan, the team were welcoming and very attentive. Had a wonderful stay here, if there were 6 stars, would gi - Fantastic well kept property Nothing- it was perfect
- Judite (10/5): Great! - Funcionárias muito simpáticas e disponíveis.
Pequeno almoço tradicional incrível.
- Carby (8/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): A deeply authentic and beautifully hosted ryokan was the perfect, memorable way to end our trip - What a truly special evening in this historic place. Throughout the rest of our Japan trip we stayed in standard (very small!) hotels, so we wanted to end our journey with an authentic Japanese experience - and this absolutely delivered, exceeding our expectations.
From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel incredibly welcome by our wonderful host, who greeted us as if we were entering her own home. She showed us around the space, explained everything with care, and welcomed us with a delicious cup of tea. Sitting at the traditional low table with our feet tucked underneath was a memorable experience (and mildly entertaining watching my very tall partner attempt to get out!).
When we returned from dinner, the room had been beautifully transformed, with the futons laid out and ready for the night. Sleeping on them was surprisingly comfortable, and the room itself felt cosy, calm, and genuinely special.
The property is stunning. Our room opened directly onto a private courtyard garden, which was magical even in winter ...I can only imagine how beautiful it would be in warmer months. We also used the onsen baths twice; the smell of the natural wood was divine and incredibly relaxing. Such a treat to be in the private facility.
Although we were unfortunately unwell during our stay and worried we may have disturbed others, we were treated with nothing but kindness and understanding, which made the experience even more meaningful to us.
We also ordered the traditional Japanese breakfast, served in the dining room. It was beautifully presented and very authentic...a style of meal we hadn’t experienced eating out around Kyoto.
We truly cannot recommend this stay highly enough. Our only regret is not staying longer to fully relax and enjoy everything this beautiful place has to offer. Sadly we weren’t feeling well enough to do it justice, but we truly appreciated the experience and effort.
Nulla
- Reetu (10/5): Stepping into another world - We loved the experience. It was like stepping into another world all together. The staff was attentive and caring. We felt that we were visiting someone in their home. Felt vert special
- Michelle (10/5): This was a lovely traditional inn where the staff made you feel at home. - The rooms were had a lovely view of the traditional gardens. I also loved the baths! It was an absolutely fantastic place to stay. N/A
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional. - Loved the people, the place and the location. Exceptional.
- Theodora (10/5): Loved every moment would definitely go back. They looked after us so well and the place was simply beautiful - Very cool, old historical vibe but clean and organised NA
- Matthew (10/5): -
- Mary (10/5): - This Ryokan is a true gem! Most comfortable night of sleep after private onsen time, and hearing rain fall in the zen center garden. We loved every breakfast and could not recommend the staff, the beautiful house, all the extra details (from a complementary birthday gift for my husband to the library snacks upstairs and matcha ceremony) more!! Would definitely come again.
- Sophie (9/5): -
- Jiayi (9/5): -
- keith (10/5): Authentic & private - Absolute highlight of our months in Japan. The authenticity of the ryokan and the privacy even though it was full was beautifully managed by the staff. The tatami room, the authentic breakfast and the polite staff were brilliant mid we go to Kyoto again we will stay there Everything was perfect
- Caitlin (10/5): The highlight of our trip! - The staff were extremely friendly, the breakfast was delicious and the place is very charming. This was the highlight of our time in Japan and I would highly recommend staying here.
- Jochelle Kei (10/5): Staying at the ryokan was definitely the highlight of our winter trip! - The location is accessible to the attractions, restaurants, and shopping district you would want to explore in Kyoto. But best believe that you wouldn't want to go out of the ryokan once you've checked in. Their guest services and amenities were topnotch—luggage storage, they will walk you through the whole property upon check-in with welcome tea and snack, great amenities including the library and 2 private onsens, beautiful gardens, great breakfast served in your room. It could only have been better if we booked 2 nights at the ryokan.
- Katherine (10/5): Like a beautiful dream, this ryokan was everything we had hoped it would be and more. - This ryokan is run by gracious people. The home is beautiful and beautifully kept, and we enjoyed the baths, breakfast, and library. It’s conveniently located, as well.
- Michael (9/5): A quiet gem in the middle of bustling Kyoto - This is a ryokan run by a multigenerational family and you can tell the care they put into their guests' stays. Check-in was super easy as our staff member spoke fluent english pretty much. We stayed over new years so they served us a special soba along with our welcome green tea. We also had breakfast included with our plan which was a special new year menu and was delicious. Beds were comfortable and although the toilet is outside the room, was very clean throughout. Shower facilities were also shared but spotless the whole time we were there. The staff are so kind and hospitable which is very heartwarming as well. There is a small cafeteria-type area with free coffee and a tea lounge on the 2nd floor featuring some great snacks/cookies (which we later found out are VERY expensive if purchased outside) which were free to take. I highly recommend this place and found the location to be fantastic - away from the main road so quiet and not too many tourists walking through to create a disturbance. Even though Kyoto is highly visited and the main tourist areas can be loud/crowded, this place helped us forget about all of that while still being a very reasonable walk to Kyoto station as long as you're okay getting the heart rate up a little bit if you have a lot of luggage. Other things to be aware of, shower time is by reservation so check in and secure your slot. Also the place locks up the gate between midnight and 7a so be back before then and let them know if you have to leave before 7a. While not the fault of the owners (the building itself is one of the original wooden constructions in Kyoto that still remain), if you need rapid access to the bathroom be warned that it's both not in the room but also the hallway is open to the air. It was cold while we were there and going to the bathroom at night can be a mental feat for that reason. Really nitpicking at this point because everything else was so good.
- May (10/5): - The staff were lovely and facilities were great. The rooms were large and comfortable. Fantastic location close to Gojo train station and with lots of restaurants close by. The pillows weren’t the most comfortable

- Dominic (10/5): - The staff was super friendly and welcoming.
- Alberto (10/5): Charming authentic experience at a historic ryokan - We enjoyed the authentic experience of a traditional Japanese inn. Exceptional breakfast and warm reception. Don’t be intimidated by the shared bathroom situation. The staff manages schedules and is very accommodating.
- Molly (10/5): gorgeous and relaxing - the staff very kind and building was beautiful. they made amazing vegetarian breakfast for us and took our photo.

- 823darieng (10/5): Best place we stayed at in Japan!!! - On our first trip to Japan, I wanted to try staying at a traditional Ryokan in addition to regular, Western style hotels. We stayed at 2 on our trip, Kadensho and Toshiharu. Of the 2, Toshiharu was by far more traditional and memorable. This venue keeps the Edo period feel of the building as much as possible. We slept on the floor on tatami mats and there is a phone but no TV in the room. Our room was very spacious with 2 rooms that you could separate with a screen. There was also a balcony area. There is no bathroom or shower in your room. Rather there are 2 Onsen style bathing rooms with a shower and soaking tub with a communal double sink area. So you do have to leave your room to go to the bathroom but I felt this added to the charm of the experience. You reserve your time to use the shower and tub which worked out find for us. We just ended up using the shower late in the evening around 11pm and then got up ready to start our day the next morning. They brought us breakfast to our room the both days we stayed there and that was very fun also. The breakfast is traditional Kaiseki style but it was very good. They served fish, rice, egg, miso soup, pickled vegetables and the like.
The staff greets you when you come "home" and when you leave, the mama-san walks you to the front door and waits and watches you leave, just like the Geisha of old. We absolutely LOVED our stay here and it was the most memorable of all the places we stayed during our trip to Japan. I definitely recommend this Ryokan and would certainly stay here again. A few of the staff speak good English but some of them don't. But we were able to easily communicate with our broken Japanese and Google translate.
- margaret (9/5): Everything I could wish for - Perfect Nothing
- Hoon Dokko (10/5): - Breakfast was great. We had breakfast for 2 days and they were so great and delicious.

- Helen (10/5): - Very nice Japanese style living. Staff are very friendly and breakfast was excellent.
- Liz (10/5): Excellent - Excellent location. Stunning building and ryokan.
- nikki (8/5): Lovely traditional Ryokan - Beautiful tradition ryokan with lovely rooms breakfast and staff could not be more lovely and helpful. It was very expensive compared to others we stayed in. No private toilet isn’t for me I don’t think although the private onsens for nothing are lovely.

- Michele (9/5): Atmosfera magnifica - Pulizia camera e staff impeccabili
Posizione ottima e atmosfera magnifica e rilassante
Beautiful experience!
If you want to have a traditional japanese experience you have absolutely to go there, the team is polite, professional to ensure you a really beautiful experience and they also care about food allergies, they cooked for me also gluten free food!! amazing! Recommend
- katalin (10/5): - If you are wondering if the price tag is worth it… it absolutely is. We were incredibly lucky and fortunate to have experienced this beautiful heritage ryokan in the heart of Kyoto. The staff are wonderful, the attention to detail is exquisite, and the pride they put into making your experience perfect is exceptional. Our only regret is that we have to leave. We will never forget this. 1000/10 recommend!
- Iphigénie (5/5): Where hospitality ends, begins relentlessness - I saw a lot of reviews complaining about the shared-bathroom situation. Honestly? We quite enjoyed the sento-like experience. Of course, you do need to like Japanese-style bathrooms. I also liked the little snacks in the common area and the Nespresso machine. First: The breakfast is wildly overpriced. I honestly don't know why anyone would go for it.
The rooms, too, felt like they could use a bit of care. Ours had a hard pillows and the futons were placed right under the air conditioner. Still, those are details we could have easily overlooked… if it weren’t for the ryokan’s biggest flaw: they simply do not read the room. Literally.
It’s fine to hover if your guests are into that. Maybe some people enjoy being gently policed while on vacation. But here, we found ourselves tiptoeing around the staff like misbehaving teenagers. They took our room keys hostage, kept watch like sentinels, asked constantly where we were going (um, out?), and entered our room without asking.
The worst: you cant use the shower when you want to even if you are the only ones present there at that moment. Unless you booked a time at least 12 hours in advance, the shower room it seems is off limits.
If you enjoy spending $400 a night to feel policed, this might be for you.
Otherwise, maybe keep looking. Japan has plenty of gems that don’t come with a chaperone.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Loved our stay here for 2 nights to experience an authentic Ryoken. The service and care they take of their customers is top notch!
- Rossella (9/5): Superb -
- Gandy-sosthène (10/5): An unforgettable experience - Everything was Perfect, the hotel, the room. The staff members were so kind especially Yoshiko sama ! She was so sweet, professional and explained the history of this establishment to us perfectly. Without her, our experience would not have been the same. Thank you so much! It was the best hôtel of all our Japan trip and of my life, you need to experience a ryokan here ! Everything was Perfect !
- Peppina (10/5): We loved every minute! -
- Shehadi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Godwin (10/5): Beautiful ryokan with the most lovely staff - Everyone was so welcoming. The room was beautiful and so spacious with view of garden. The breakfast was the best we had in Japan and they made it vegetarian for us. We loved the more traditional experience, thank you so much! Nothing!
- John (10/5): Authentic Japanese Style with friendly staff - Authenticity and staff very friendly and helpful Had to sit on the floor all the time. I know that is a Japanese style but a couple of chairs would have been nice
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): A small and beautiful oasis in the middle of Kyoto - From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome in this traditional Ryoken. We stayed just the one night and had a terrific and relaxing time here. Cannot recommend enough
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Lovely staff, great experience
- John (10/5): Most excellent and generous hosts - It’s like staying in a traditional Japanese home. The staff was lovely and you can feel the history in the home. The breakfast was excellent traditional Japanese and unlike anything you can buy at a restaurant or hotel.
