Guest Reviews
- Sharon (8/5): Fabulous winery restaurant - The Restaurant at Black Estate was amazing, the staff member was friendly & polished, awesome service & food. Well worth the expense, especially the wine pairing.
Large shower & area to “live” was great, as was view. Food in room did then not live up to the high standard set by restaurant. Cheese platter was basic & the bread did not go with the cheese.
Lasagne was large & I enjoyed, but spicy for my husband & no cheesy/ bechamal layers so dry.
Breakfast supplies seemed old & dried up too.
Bed was too soft for our liking, personally.
- Hugo (10/5): - Absolutely lovely little room in a vineyard - truly magical to get the whole place to yourself
We ordered a bit of food fo the room which was delicious ans breakfast was delicious too
Well thought out with microwave oven and places to put dirty dishes (as no kitchen sink etc)
All the staff were super lovely Quite tired room
- Morihiro (10/5): How beautiful it is! Dominate all - Vinyard view, just next to restaurant, so no worry for driving after drink Nothing
- Jackie (9/5): Other than the sheets … loved the property, location, wine, food and staff. - Staff were wonderful, welcoming and friendly. Beautiful setting, fantastic food and wine. My husband and I are both glutenfree and we were well accommodated for with freshly made glutenfree bread etc. Beautiful setting, peaceful and quiet. We also had a beautiful sunset. We did really enjoy our stay. Sorry only one complaint…..I’m not sure if there were stains on the sheets or they hadn’t been changed but that unfortunately grossed me out a bit 😳
- Peter (9/5): we still loved our stay and enjoyed your gorgeous wine - Loved the location and views over the vineyard, enjoyed having the bikes and we had a wonderful lunch the following day Would have preferred a small stovetop/hobs and a sink rather than the microwave/oven
Noticed the loo wasnt clean and poor flushing
- Matthew (6/5): - Well located in the local winery region.
Black Estate staff at the cellar door were excellent Lacked cohesive design flair - could have been so much more with a little bit of attention and designer know how.
- Kamil (10/5): -
- Richard (10/5): A great place to stay especially if eating there. -
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Vanessa (4/5): Nice enough but too expensive for what it is. The restaurant is great! - The winery/ restaurant is beautiful. Service is great, highly recommend. The b&b. After the most beautiful food and wine at the restaurant we were so looking forward to treating ourselves at the b&b. It was such a disappointment. It had no tv, no proper coffee machine, breakfast was cereal and bread and jam in sachets. Furniture was marked and just thrown together, it felt very not special. It was lacking the lovely high end feeling that the very high price indicated it should be. It’s a nice enough place , very private, but not worth the price. Not even a bottle of wine thrown in for free.
- David (10/5): -
- Karl (10/5): -
- Bernadette (7/5): Beautiful destination loved the privacy and peace amongst the vines. - Great location breakfast good sourdough ans jam beautiful but could do with a coffee machine. Needed a plug other side of bed for phone charging .
A mirror for make up we are 2 girls who wear make up .
Counter could be more user friendly sound system, toaster etc …
We arrived at 16.10 to check in and no one there had to greet us had to ring as we didn’t know where to go.
- Charlotte (10/5): - The staff were amazing and made us feel so welcome and special! The location stunning, room beautiful and the bed was so comfy. If you stay here you must eat at the restaurant!!! The food is out of this world It was perfect!!!
- Casey (9/5): Quiet stay in a vineyard - Amazing building within the vineyard. Good views from bedroom. Completely quiet after business hours. Free to walk or bike within the vineyards. Amazing Stargazing! Good check-in instructions prior to arrival. Able to pre-order dinner. On-site Restaurant open for lunch only. Breakfast is healthy but simple with granola, yogurt and bread.. Room could use a kitchen counter as breakfast and dinner was in bedroom. There was a sewage odor next to varanda.
- Zaynah (10/5): -
- jack.hollins (10/5): - Absolutely perfect location and meeting Simon the cat was a great surprise. Delicious food and wine
- Diana (9/5): Wat een leuke ervaring - Prachtige locatie, hartelijke ontvangst en heerlijke bedden.
- Tricia Phillips (10/5): - Stunning views from our gorgeously decorated, lavish studio. Lots of little extra touches made it a truly special stay, like the salted choc chip cookies and quality breakfast supplies waiting for us in our room. Having the whole place to ourselves after the winery had closed was really special. Nothing.
- Cindy (9/5): Amazing location and view - Loved the location and outlook. The room itself was spotlessly clean and had everything needed. We also ordered a 'takeaway' meal from the winery and it was all there waiting for us which was perfect. Nothing
- Kate (10/5): Fantastic stay - The Chef's Choice lunch was wonderful. Staff were so friendly. It would have been nice to have a wine tasting included, rather than charges as an extra
- Jack (10/5): -
- Ruth (10/5): - Beautiful location. Excellent communication with hosts prior to stay.
- Asun (9/5): -
- Jane (10/5): -
- John (9/5): Peaceful and quirky B&B on a wine estate. - The B&B is the only unit on the estate so when the winery closed we had the whole estate to ourselves with freedom to walk and explore anywhere. N/a
- Janice (8/5): -
- Lee (10/5): -
- Erica (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay!! Comfy bed, great shower and amazing breakfast supplied. The heat pump kept the room nice and cozy on a very cold night in Waipara, the view was amazing during the day, but the highlight (other than the food and wine at the restaurant) was the night sky - we had one of the most beautiful clear skies and stargazing experiences, went wonder through the vines and capture some amazing photos. All the staff was super friendly and helpful. Amazing couple of nights, thanks guys!
- Wayne (9/5): Superb -
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Meredith (9/5): Superb - Wonderful room, very comfortable bed, goid bathroom, loved the shower. The breakfast supplies were fabulous.
Beautiful location. The room was warm, which was welcome on a cold and rainy night. We arrived late, after dark, due to flooded roads. Despite detailed instructions, it was not easy to find the entrance, and in pouring rain, without outside lights, it was also difficult to find the key locker and entrance door. In daylight it would have been obvious. After dark, if there had been a porch light left on it would have been easier.
- Craig (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jacinta (10/5): We will be back again! Loved it!! - Convienience,
Privacy and comfort
- Prue (8/5): Very good -
- Christine (8/5): Very good -
- Genevieve (10/5): Great find for a quick break away with my husband, the staff were very accommodating with some dietaries we had and went - Beautiful location, great facilities and the little touches in the room made it a special stay. Having the whole place to yourself in the evening makes it quite a unique experience. No complaints
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay was amazing. Beautiful location, friendly staff, delicious food and gorgeous countryside.
- Patricia (10/5): So glad we found this B&B! - Beautiful, relaxing and private overlooking vineyards. Outstanding hospitality. Tranquil at night---slept great. Can't think of anything.
- Sophie (10/5): Absolutely wonderful cosy room on a vineyard - Absolutely wonderful cosy room on a vineyard. We loved all the room details, the really comfortable bed and the takeaway food with their wine was just delightful. Minor niggles - breakfast was minimal, we used the yummy bread with dinner and got brunch along the road the next day and the shower pressure wasn’t super high (I didn’t want to wash thick hair) - but was warm and bathroom otherwise excellent.
- Janice (10/5): If you like great food and want to relax with your wine and enjoy the view this is a lovely place to stay. - We visited here 5 yrs ago and had a lovely meal and wine so chose to stay as B&B this time
Lovely aspect, great views and so quiet.
The accommodation was very comfortable, huge bed and great shower.
We opted to have a cheese/ charcuterie board for the evening in the accommodation. Wide choice of breakfast (continental in the room). Toaster and combi oven.
Outside terrace for sipping wine at sunset (though the weather was against us at the time).
The restaurant served great food, excellent flavours and good advice on choices from the staff plus wine pairing.
Altogether a very relaxing stay.
- Ann (10/5): Fantastic..a much needed rest. - The space around you, views of the vineyards, the walks and friendly staff
- Gina (9/5): Superb - The setting was magical and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud.
- Nikki (9/5): Superb -
- Ann (10/5): the perfect peaceful stay in a fantastic location - stunning location excellent facilities friendly staff great food nothing
- Danielle (10/5): We absolutely loved our stay at Black Estate. Staff were so lovely and helpful. The bed and facilities were so comfortab - Such a beautiful location and very comfortable
- Emily (10/5): Staying at Black Estate B&B was a wonderful experience! We loved the tranquility, the wine and food were delicious, - The location, the tranquility, the food and wine options, the room decor/furnishings N/A
- Stewart (10/5): First class establishment which we would recommend. - The quiet peacefulness of the accommodation would be hard to beat.
All the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.
The restaurant food was excellent we’d recommend the chef’s choice. The weather, it rained all night, this stopped us getting on the bicycles provided to explore the winery.
- Lynne (7/5): Amazing location but disappointing breakfast. Muesli very traditional so very “chewy”. Rye bread is a dense bread but th - Peaceful location with magnificent views. Difficult access via some uneven steps that could be dangerous for some people. An easier alternative route appeared to have been possible
but wasn’t indicated.
- Norman (9/5): Superb - The location was perfect for what we wanted to do, attend the Hurunui Garden festival. The breakfast of home made meusli and fresh home made bread was perfect.
- Roz (10/5): A very calming and relaxing break with plenty of options to walk around or visit other wineries. - Breakfast was perfect - we are not heavy breakfast people anyways - the coffee was amazing. We loved the fresh sourdough bread and the fresh honeycomb and jam were a perfect complement to this. I guess, we always like to have a tv, however, this was not a deal-breaker. After walking/riding thru the Waipara trail we were exhausted and didnt need the tv to send us off to sleep.
- Kimberley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Madeleine (10/5): Beautiful, relaxing and friendly staff. We loved our stay and will recommend to others. - Breakfast was lovely. Thank you. We would’ve liked a complimentary wine tasting so that we felt more confident purchasing a bottle.
- Cherie (8/5): Stay in the vines - The bed was very comfortable. (not hard, like some) and the location was quiet. Housekeeping was great, heating worked well, communications were excellent. View of the sunrise and sunset over the vines was very special as there was a super moon. Needs better lighting from the carpark to the unit as it is hard to find your way in the dark. The bikes, a great drawcard , are difficult to ride and need repair.
- Lyn (10/5): Exceptional - Black Estate B & B is located in the beautiful Black Estate vineyards. It was comfortable, clean, quiet and only 45 minutes to Christchurch airport.
The sour dough breakfast was some of the best sough dough we have ever tasted. We would recommend booking into lunch at their restaurant which is in the same grounds and then checking into the accomodation. It was a lovely stay with lovely hosts.
- Macfarlane (6/5): Pleasant -
- Francesca (10/5): Winter getaway - Came for lunch first and then checked into this cute little B&B. Quite dangerous having access to every single bottle of wine they sell, what else are you going to do on a Saturday night when there's no tv :)
They leave you breakfast which is an entire loaf of their bread the serve in the restaurant!
We stayed in June and the room was really warm and cosy Initial service at the restaurant was a little slow
- Michelle (9/5): Loved our stay - so perfect to enjoy the Trust the Chef menu & wine pairing and stay next door! - Beautiful room at a stunning vineyard. Room facilitates were great, peaceful once everyone had left for the day. Nice little courtyard. Fantastic we could have our dog with us although he loved chasing the rabbits too much!
No TV but great Bluetooth stereo and good wifi so we managed to watch some olympics on our laptop.
Gorgeous breakfast although more milk needed! Bed was comfortable but the pillows were all too hard.
- Nicola (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debbie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Megan (9/5): Superb - Bed was so comfortable
- Jeff (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vern (10/5): Perfection - Loved our stay! We are return visitors and had the best time. Lunch at the onsite restaurant was excellent and the food (lamb pies and lasagne) we ordered for room service on the two nights were amazing. The room was very comfortable and I loved waking up to the amazing vineyard views in the mornings and watching the most beautiful sunsets. Thoughtful touches like breakfast provisions, mountain bikes for use on the trail and great Sans toiletries in the bathroom. Friendly and warm service. Wish we could have stayed for longer! We’ll be back. Thanks Pen and Nick for hosting us - it’s a privilege being able to stay at the vineyard and have the whole place to ourselves at night! Nothing! Impossible to fault. The restaurant and wine (I absolutely love the 2018 French Farm Pinot Gris, bought a few bottles to take home) are world class and the property is amazing.
- Lizzie (7/5): Nice out of city escape - I like the location, lovely sunset and sunrise. The staff were polite and the bed was really comfortable I had messaged/emailed about prepaying/card details left on file to pay to surprise my partner but when we checked out they handed my partner the receipt. The cost made him feel bad and he purchased $300 wine elsewhere, this what I was trying to avoid so I was a bit annoyed. The toilet bowl was also a tad dirty.
- Jill (8/5): Very good - Lovely quiet location No TV, would be good in winter as was too cold to sit outside.
- Rachel (9/5): Superb - Lovely spot. Great staff . All that we needed for a night away ❤️
- Philip (8/5): Wonderful quiet location and a very comfortable unit. - The location was good. The view from the room was wonderful. The solitude and quietness of the B&B was delightful. The supplied continental breakfast was very nice and the still warm homemade bread when delivered to our room was appreciated.
- Peter (9/5): Superb -
- Sam (10/5): Outstanding peaceful retreat in the Waipara valley - We arrived as weary travelers after 26 hours of flying and found ourselves in stunning and peaceful surroundings at Black Estate and received a very warm welcome by Pen and her team. The room is a perfect little hideaway in the vineyard and we were able to buy a delicious homemade lasagne to eat in our room while we rested and drank some of their delicious wines. We had the place to ourselves after dark which was bliss. We had bikes to explore the area. Nothing, it was wonderful.
- Jane (10/5): For us - perfect - Right next to lovely winery restaurant so could enjoy the chef’s choice lunch and not have to drive home. When the workers left the views were ours to enjoy with our dog.
- Tom (10/5): Amazing stay -
- Kieren (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mahir (10/5): Black Estate is a beautiful vineyard with amazing views from the restaurant and from the guest room. - Stunning views of the vineyard
Very friendly staff and hosts!
The sourdough bread for breakfast was absolutely delicious.
Bikes provided that allow you to discover neighbouring vineyards on your bike.
Very quiet and peaceful in the evening. N/A
- Karen (10/5): Stunning vineyard and restaurant and accomodation - Beautiful setting with the hills all around
- Jean (8/5): Very good -
- Choosit (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jen (3/5): Disappointing that we had no bathroom facilities. - Booking process was well done. Got heads up that power was going to be off half hour before checkout, but this didn’t occur. Instead we had no water for shower/toilet/coffee without warning at 9am, 1 hour before checkout-this spoilt our stay.
- Stuart (10/5): Exceptional - The peace
- Craig (6/5): Inexperienced - The location was excellent being at one end of the North Canterbury wine region. The room itself is a single unit at the end of a winery. The room and bed was comfortable and the bathroom huge with a great shower. At night as the occupant of the room you are the only ones on the entire estate as all workers for the winery have gone home. Consequently, it is very quiet and private with garden hedges on all sides. The continental breakfast was excellent and provided in the room. The fridge is stocked with alcohol at additional cost. Parking is nearby. The room has no places to store suitcases, so we just stood ours in the corner and lifted then onto the bed whenever we needed something. On arrival we did as we were told and went to the cellar door. The accommodation manager was not in and spoke instead to one of the other staff who had limited knowledge of the process. There are no food outlets within 10km of the place so plan your meals accordingly. A continental breakfast was supplied in the room consisting of yoghurt, bread, juice, and jams. Apparently, the juice was an extra cost item however there was nothing in the room to highlight that apparent fact. We left at 09:00am on a Saturday morning and the accommodation manager was again absent. We spoke to one of the kitchen staff members who was unable to process our departure - payment is upon departure. I left my contact details however the next thing I know they have charged my credit card almost $100.00 more than the room rate. Further enquiries yielded that they had charged us for the juice and a bottle of wine, the latter usage of which was untrue. They are reimbursing us for the wine but not the juice even though by definition a continental breakfast includes juice as standard.
- Suellen (9/5): Beautiful location with stunning views, peace and tranquility in the evening. - The B&B is tucked away below the main building with cellar door and restaurant. We had lunch at the restaurant and it was superb and made our stay very special. The location is stunning with views of Waipara towards the mountains. There was fresh snow on the mountain tops and the air was clean and crisp. The breakfast provided was perfect with lovely bread, spreads, yoghurt and granola and fresh ground coffee. There is no fireplace. Using the air conditioner for heating was a bit uncomfortable and there was a light sensor in the room so every time you rolled over in bed it came on. I thought the bathroom could have done with some heated lighting.
- Kok (5/5): Not so worth of the money given the size of the room and it was quite dusty when we check in. - Good location at the heart of the place and got a nice view over the vineyards ~ it was quite after the end of the day and we managed to watch the star and milky way during the fine weather night. The room was quite dusty when we checked in and we clean most of the places by ourself. With such a high price we would expect a bit more space and a better cleanliness. Quite a disappointed stay for us.
- Kelly (9/5): Superb - Great to be able to stay onsite and lunch was stunning !
Peaceful and quiet and a lovely outlook Was great to have bikes but they need servicing badly ! Flat tyres , worn breaks - great to have the option there
- Kirkmckinney (9/5): Placid rural retreat, pretty close to perfect - Location was lovely and quiet. Private terrace area, great bed. Lack of some basic amenities I'd expect in a place at this price point -- bathrobes, reading lamps (other than bedside), strong and fast wifi
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Trish (9/5): Superb -
- Kimberley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pamela (5/5): Passable -
- Ann (10/5): Magical Stay - We arrived at lunch time and were greeted warmly by the staff. We opted to dine at the restaurant, prior to checking in, the service, food and wine were all exceptional. The B& B was very comfortable and at 5 pm everyone, guests and staff, disappear so we had the whole winery to ourselves. Perfection.
- Codey (6/5): Pleasant -
- Kelly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (8/5): we enjoyed our stay - a good stopover after landing in Christchurch
the food was good The bed was a little uncomfortable
- Leng (9/5): Superb -
- Melanie (10/5): Perfect location at a winery in wine country! - Located at a working winery
