Guest Reviews
- Laurence (8/5): - Definitely not for you if you’re disabled.
- Anthony (8/5): - Excellent location with many shops nearby. The lady at the front desk was very helpful.
- Bridget (10/5): - Wonderful stay here during a hot, Cezanne-busy August.
Perfect location amidst the charm of Aix - and walkable to everything - the musée Granet is seconds away! And then shops, markets, restaurants, galleries.
The old charm is exquisite.
The owner and team are too lovely. I felt so at home.
So happy to have found this spot. Very good quality / cost
- Sharon (10/5): - Nice room. Staff was very nice. Very close to everything. Would recommend.
- Carol (10/5): - Very centrally located!
- Jeremy (10/5): - Charming. Excellent breakfast and extremely helpful staff
- Steven (10/5): - Was really pleased with my stay. Perfect location, across street from Musee Granet. Staff helpful and courteous. Room like something from another era—very spacious, a bit of faded grandeur (which was fine—I didn’t expect anything different). And priced very fairly. Would definitely stay there again if back in Aix.
- Paula (10/5): Fabulous Aix en Provence local experience - Beautiful historic hotel with lovely ambiance and perfect for a visit to Aix, highly recommended.
- Kimberly (10/5): - The staff was warm and welcoming. We felt right at home. The location is super - just three blocks from the main pedestrian street with many shops and historic buildings. We will be staying at the Hotel Cardinal next time we visit Aix-en-Provence!
- Gary (4/5): - I would pass on this place and keep looking.
- Emily (10/5): - This hotel was great! It feels historic on the inside and outside! As I was traveling with a friend, we chose the twin beds room. My bed was nothing fancy, but it was comfortable and I woke up feeling rested. Antique furnishings were delightful! The bathroom was very newly renovated, but in a European way - huge tub with a handheld sprayer, but no curtain or anything to hold the sprayer. I felt very tall entering the bathroom- if you are over 5'4" or so, be prepared to duck! The ceilings are normal height.
There was a tiny elevator to the third floor. Staff were gracious and helpful, and let us store our luggage after we checked out. We did not choose the breakfast, but the dining room was cozy and I kind of wish we had.
The location was perfect- a very short walk from the train station and close to everything. If you are very snobby about everything being new and just so, you should stay somewhere else. If you appreciate charm and character, this place will delight you!
- Pankaj (10/5): - Nice hotel.
- Cherry (10/5): - This hotel has a Paris chic flea market vive with great art finds. My room was huge with a separate kitchen and beautiful bath. I overlooked a centuries old church in the old town. The location made it easy to walk everywhere. The room was so beautiful that I hesitated to stay away for hours at a time.
- Lawrence J (10/5): Loved our stay. - Really enjoyed our stay! Lovely hotel, clean and beautifully furnished with antiques and unique features. Loved it! Thanks to the friendly staff!!
- Marina (4/5): - Location is excellent but everything else is really poor…
- Robin (8/5): - Very spacious room with French windows that open. The air conditioning worked very well and was quiet. The room decor made you feel like you were staying in a Chateau.
- Barbara (8/5): - Gracious greeting, lift for bags, lovely room with a terrace. Only gripe is no shower, but as we were only there one night, we made do with baths.
Location was ideal for a short stay.
- Kevin (10/5): - The madam has been working hard to make the hotel the best in the area. Artwork everywhere, attention to detail…best location in the famous residential area in the heart of the city… cardinal has long been my hog to hotel in the region. The madam adds a very special personal touch to everything .
- Kenneth (10/5): - Highly recommend this hotel.
- Deborah (8/5): - Great location. Easy walking distance to everything. Everything was a little bit ‘quaint’ in the room and we had to carry our heavy luggage up a narrow steep set of stairs to get to our room. But great view from windows on top floor!
- Wendy (10/5): - Wonderful location, quirky but charming interior, helpful staff. Highly recommended!
- Claire (10/5): - Super charming hotel. My friend and I LOVED it here. A little bit older feel, but it fits the area.
- laura (6/5): - Hotel in zona molto comoda ma decisamente troppo rétro
- John (10/5): - Perfect location. Friendly staff. Lovely.
- David (10/5): Our go-to on Aix. - We have stayed here several times before which should tell you everything you need to know. Friendly, warm, cosy, close to restaurants and the market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
- Beverly (10/5): - This is a beautiful old building with lovely antique furniture and filled with high-quality original paintings. It is a virtual museum.
Our room had a closed in patio and a complete kitchen!
The bldg has a fantastic location across the square fin a church snd the Museum Granet, and is one short block to Old Town.
A small bus (holding 6 passengers) stops on the corner, costs 1,30€ and takes a loop through OldTown.
We'd loved the hotel, wonderful stall, very convenient location, and excellent, reasonable breakfast (only 11€}.
We recommend it highly and plan to return!
- JUNG MIN (10/5): - Vintage and charming historic hotel with friendly ataffs
- olga (10/5): - Fabulous breakfast
friendly helpful owners
nothing on site facilities but that was fine...
- Carmel (10/5): - Hotel was full of character and ideally located in the old town. Continental breakfast was really typical and beautifully presented.
- Laura (8/5): - Very nice staff, facilities maybe need upgrading or fixing (ie. Shower broken) but very clean.
- Cathy (10/5): - This hotel is charming. While it has modern amenities, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time with the high bedroom ceiling and decor. It’s close to Main Street where the Market happens, as well as the restaurants. It’s nice place to stay while in town.
- Susan (10/5): - It was like having our own apartment with separate kitchen in a quiet square across from a museum/ art gallery & actual hotel was round corner which was fine. Loved it.
No lift but drawback was just shower in bath without curtain or screen so wet floor.
- Kent (10/5): - Charming. I think it’s an old Victorian house that has been refurbished and decorated with authentic antiques. Also, all of the art is original which I really appreciate and there is a lot of it. I highly recommend this hotel.
- Karl (10/5): Enchanted Stay - Our 2 night stay was very comfortable at Hotel Cardinal. We had the top floor room with views of the town and hills on both sides. Like others have said, the decor is beautifully traditional (not modern) but not dingy. We LOVED the character of the hotel and our room. Well-maintained and lovely staff. The location was also perfect, close to many things yet quiet. Our small pup loved it too! Pet’s allowed, always a plus😄 We highly recommend staying here and would definitely stay again. A perfect hotel to tie together a South of France trip. Merci !
- Gerry (10/5): - Lovely staff
- art (8/5): - We didn’t like the tub with no shower. The freezer in the kitchenette needed to be defrosted. We didn’t realize there was no elevator and had to walk up 2 flights with luggage. We liked the location close to attractions and dining. It was nice to have a refrigerator in the room.
- Alex (10/5): - Beautiful property and we were very pleased with the room. A perfect distance to everything.
- Kristina (10/5): - We stayed in a fabulous room with a very tall ceiling and windows that looked right onto a church plaza with beautiful windows in a flower box. The room had a lovely sitting area and a kitchenette as well. It wasn't entirely easy to find just due to the roads in town and there wasn't parking on site. However, the hotel proprietors were extremely helpful in guiding us to the property and helping us find parking. The breakfast option was wonderful. Grand and elegant place. Location cannot be beat: charming and walk to everything
- Joanna (10/5): - Accueil tres sympathique. Cadre de luxe pour un prix raisonable. Petit dej excellent. Orientation client exemplaire.
- Michelle (8/5): Good location - Very good location
- Penelope (8/5): - I chose this property because I wanted a kitchenette, it was centrally located, and reasonable. My room was quite large and the kitchenette had everything I needed. There was also a bathtub which I loved. The windows looked out onto a lovely courtyard on one side and a small square with a church and an art gallery on the other. Very well located near Cours Mirabeau and lots of smaller streets with shopping and restaurants. I was very happy with my experience. That said, it's a typical, older French hotel. Those expecting a North American-type hotel will be disappointed. Do check out the art gallery and it's sister gallery. Totally worth the six euro.
- STEN (10/5): - Lovely familyhotel
Cosy and personal
Great atmosphere
- James (6/5): - Very nice neighborhood and helpful staff, but the room was not well equipped with pillows and the bed was uncomfortable. In the bathroom, there was no shower curtain, so the only thing to do was to use the shower head as a bath and spray water all over the room. BReakfast with adequate, but not that good and not a good value for the price.
- David (8/5): - A quiet -perfectly located for tourism -traditional small hotel in an C18 ‘mansion’. Friendly informal service.
We stayed in the annexe of ‘superior’ rooms with ( very basic) kitchenettes. The rooms are spacious but in need of some renewal (e.g. the shower/bath).
Simple continental breakfast €11.
- Kara (10/5): - I stayed here for six nights while visiting my daughter in Aix. You absolutely cannot beat location!! I loved being able to have one of the windows in my bathroom open every night and there was absolutely no noise (even though in middle of town) to wake you up during the night.
Everyone was so nice & everything was so clean.
- Brian (8/5): - The place is really special with an old World feel about it enhanced by a large room with bathroom and kitchen annexed, and being right next to an art museum and the St John of Malta Church dating back to the 13th century.
Staff were friendly. The downside was cleanliness. The electric jug had a film on it, pots were unclean and a cup had lipstick on it. Just a little bit of effort scrubbing the bath and dishes would help. Also while there is dish cleaner and scrubbing brush there is no tea towel to dry the dishes.
- Inder (10/5): - This a charming old world hotel, a very enjoyable experience, set in what has to be one of the worlds most unusually charming places. If you visit, you will want come back as we have done for 20 years.
- ATSUSHI (8/5): nice hotel - The location was good. The hotel area was very quiet and I got good sleep. Staff members were friendly and attentive.
- Eileen (10/5): A perfect place to stay in Aix-en-Provence - My daughter and I both loved Hotel Cardinal. The staff are extremely kind and helpful and I loved the family feeling of the hotel. The breakfasts were wonderful. We liked our room. The hotel is ideally situated to walk all over Aix-en-Provence -- it couldn't be more centrally located, yet one still had the feeling of peace and calm in this traditional hotel. You can hear the church bells and walk up to Rue D'Italie for restaurants, patisseries, fromageries, etc. What made everything extra special were the beautiful Christmas decorations everywhere, especially in the hotel. I'm ready to return right now.
- Kevin (10/5): - Great location --stroll out the door into the peaceful, historic quarter. Cozy, comfortable room. Attentive staff.
- Arkady (10/5): - It's a very convenient location.
- Stephen (10/5): - Charming, elegant little hotel within easy walking distance of the old town
- ATSUSHI (8/5): good location - It is located in the city center and it was very convenient for shopping and dinning.
- Kirsten (8/5): - We had a beautiful main floor room that opened into our own private courtyard with fountains. A very nice surprise. We had a 3 person family room. Large bathroom with nice fixtures. No shower but the deep tub had a nice handheld. The only downside was there's no parking nearby and very narrow one way streets. But that would apply to all the similar hotels in the area
- SUZAN (10/5): - The room was gorgeous and very historic. Website said the property has an elevator, which isn’t true for some parts. The lady at the front desk was nice enough to help haul my luggage up the 3 flights of stairs. It was a bit precarious bringing it all down to check out. The breakfast was absolutely lovely.
- INNA (8/5): Wirth to try - Very retro styled hotel. Looks non trivial. Matrass was not very comfortable.
- Alice (10/5): Great hotel and city - Beautiful centrally located hotel in elegant Aix. Very nice staff and room
- Jennifer (10/5): Felt like I was living in France - Stayed in room 30/a studio apartment with bedroom, dining and kitchen. Friendly staff. Comfortable bed. Quiet and in the heart of Aix-en-Provence.
- Samaara (10/5): Quaint hotel with charm - Superb! - Fantastic! The location is perfect...walking distance to everything. The service is spectacular, which is perfect for an early start to the day. Otherwise, I recommend breakfast at any of the cafés just minutes from the hotel to experience the town.
- Julie (10/5): Nice experience - Very nice hôtel. Well maintained. Friendly staff. I recommend the experience!
- Lynne (10/5): - The property owners are welcoming and made our stay an absolute delight. The property is romantic and has old world charm
- Brian (8/5): - Hotel very old French decor that is why we booked it. Only negative point parking is a nightmare - it’s on the street and very tight turning from side streets with high kerbs ideal for scuffing wheels. Parking is free for 90 minutes just get the appropriate ticket from the machine.
- Jin (10/5): excellent hotel with great value! - Beautiful hotel, excellent location & helpful staff.
- Matvey (8/5): - Hotel Cardinal has one of the best locations in Aix. It's close to the major places of interest of the city. The breakfast is abundant. However, the oilcloth tableware being sprayed and wiped out while one is having breakfast is somewhat strange. But all in all we're happy to come back.
- Bruce (10/5): - Just a wonderful old hotel with spacious rooms and great location. Staff was extremely helpful. Reasonably priced.
- Benny w (10/5): - Good stuff
- Ceil (10/5): Very clean - They deal with cleanliness very seriously. They even sanitize the keys in front of you. We love the location, quiet but close to Cors Mirabeau
- Elena (6/5): A bit old furniture which did not look too clean - The hotel is located in the center and in walkable distance from the main spots. The concept and style are classical and very nice. The only disappointment were the smell of sweat inside the room and overall not very clean textile parts of furniture
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly staff for this boutique hotel in a 200-year old house in the heart of Aix.
Just relax and enjoy!
- Olivier (10/5): A gem in the heart of the old Aix - If you like art, French culture and tradition, this is your place to stay in central Aix. The whole building is adorned with period furniture, art, and flowers. Our double room was spacious, the bathroom impeccable. We love the continental breakfast served on a silver tray in a beautiful salon and classical music in the background. We stayed two consecutive weeks and had a wonderful time.
The hotel is just minutes away from Cours Mirabeau, Hotel de Caumont, Musee Granet, rail and bus stations, in one of the most charming parts of the old city. Nearby Le Grillon and restaurant Jardin Mazarin became our favorite hangouts. This place is a highlight in our traveling experience. The two-star ranking delivered by the French government does no justice to this three-star property, but makes it affordable for you to enjoy. We will be back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This hotel has all the charm you would expect being in such a beautiful town, and the staff was always helpful and accommodating. I would stay there again whenever in Aix!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Large room with minimal kitchenette that had “flea market” utinsels, dishes, and glassware. One wine glass, mismatched coffe cups, etc. No microwave. Shower controls were tricky with one side valve handle broken. Deferred maintenance. Check-in person didn’t provide WiFi info. Next morning I asked about it and desk person said I should have been giving it upon check-in..duh! Great bed. Fabulous location!
- Christopher (10/5): - We love this place, we stayed here 7 years ago and enjoyed it then. This time we had a great terrace and a very large room. Best 2 star hotel I have ever stayed in.
- Verified traveler (6/5): nothing special, nothing horrible - There is nothing really bad about this hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful, but our room, although adequate, was in need of attention. The Continental Breakfast was very basic (we only had it once).
Location is very handy for town centre; ten minutes walk.
I suppose it's a typical two star accommodation
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely hotel - Lovely hotel, full of character. Personnel very friendly and helpful. Great location in town centre.
- Erica (8/5): - This quaint hotel was in the quiet area of town and made for a low key stay. Loved the neighborhood and the near by restaurants and shops. The interior could use a little updating but it’s fine. The only real negative is the lack of a shower.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was very beautiful and has an elavator, but I had trouble with the world fi
- Ian (10/5): A good value 2 star hotel, excellently location. - Lovely hotel, decorated with a lot of character.
Excellent location - a short walk into the heart of town yet a peaceful location.
Breakfast: fairly simple but good value continental breakfast, nicely served in a comfortable dining area. It would have been nice to have some fruit offered.
Pleasant and comfortable room, comfortable bed.
Wifi adequate.
The lounge/dining area was a pleasant retreat from the midday heat!
- David (8/5): Great little hotel! - Third stay there on the last 3 weeks. Smallish hotel great location not far from the Cours Mirabrsu and all it has to offer.
Will stay there again next time in Aix for sure.
- Kathy (10/5): Charming Hotel in a Great Location in Aix! - Charming hotel in quiet neighborhood, a short walk to city center. Good breakfast, great lighting in room and bath vanity. Free wifi, no safe, good A/C. Very nice and comfortable, we will stay there again when in Aix. If you have a car, park at the Malacrida garage and ride the bus in: euro2.20/day includes free bus pass.
- Lorinda (4/5): smelly bathroom - The hotel itself is charming and the location is excellent in the centre of Aix. The big problrm was the toilet, it had a very strong smell of urine, like the smell you would get in a dirty bar. It was so strong that even with the door shut it seemed to linger in the bedroom. Proper cleaning and some bleach might solve the problem.
- Richard (8/5): Central location, but quiet - We were very satisfied. It’s a two-star hotel. Location was great. Parking was difficult but we left the car in the Carnot parking, which was close. I think it was 20 euros per 24-hours. We had a larger room with a small kitchen area. There is a supermarket close on Roi-René street, and a smaller one in the rue d’Italie. We were in the annex. There was no elevator but we were on the first floor up from the ground floor. Although we were in the old city and there were many restaurants not far away, it was very quiet — perhaps because the hotel is across the street from the museum and a church.
- Ibrahim (6/5): If you have no other possibility - Very good location but that is all. Modeste condition hotel, rooms are small and not very confortable. And a bad point for hotels.com; the price you pay is higher than the normal prices (high season prices) of the hotel!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Shabby, Gross, Outdated and Uncomfortable! - A room with a kitchenette is 50 euros for a cabinet that has a very gross and outdated hot plate and microwave. There is no way I would use those facilities or put my food in the same area. The room is very shabby and the bathroom was in a windowless dungeon/closet that seemed very unclean. The whole place is outdated and doesn't have the charm the pictures did. We left immediately and just took the hit on what we spent on the room.
The staff was friendly, but it took us an entire hour to check in.
- Michael (10/5): Comfortable apartment in a perfect location - We stayed in the hotel annex in a 17th century building up the street from the main hotel on a small square opposite the Musée Granet and the beautiful 12th century church of St Jean de Malte. The view over the square from our dining room window was worth the walk up two flights of stairs to our apartment. The apartment itself was spacious and comfortable, with a well equipped kitchen, plenty of hot water for showers and pretty good wifi. Location-wise, it is a few minutes' walk to the Cours Mirabeau, with plenty of small shops, cafés and restaurants nearby. Being across the square from the Musée Granet (Aix's main public art gallery) is a real bonus. The local neighbourhood felt safe and was generally pretty quiet.
