Guest Reviews
- Volker (10/5): - An utterly magnificent ryokan experience. The property features two private onsen baths in addition to two further open-air onsen, offering a serene and deeply immersive atmosphere. The half-board arrangement includes an exceptional, exquisitely prepared multi-course dinner that elevates the stay to a true culinary journey.
The hosts are wonderfully charming and attentive, going above and beyond to ensure every guest feels genuinely welcomed and at ease. The location is highly convenient, situated directly along the Aso Bus Loop 1, making it easily accessible.
Altogether, this is authentic Japan at its very finest—an unforgettable and truly sensational experience. Ryokan has futon matress - people with baxk problems take care
- JOJO XIN YI (9/5): - the strawberry milkshake was superb!! I wish there was unlimited supply all day long for the strawberry milkshake! i can taste it when a drink is artificial or full of organic homemade quality~ the lady boss is also very friendly & patient and so helpful to help with the guest on their luggage. She is almost like a superwoman! Love their dinner claypot rice too - which now I understand why on reviews people kept talking about their rice - u just have to try it to understand. I wished the onsen could have a little renovation to make it more upscale~ its clean but basic currently.
- Gabriele (10/5): - An amazing oasis, we are glad we stayed for two nights. Food is amazing and so is the entire staff. A great place for exploring the area and Mt.Aso National Park.
The onsen was beautiful. Nothing to complain or improve.

- Samantha (10/5): - The staff were very welcoming and kind. The meals are an exquisite experience. The ryukan experience itself is wonderful.

- Stefano (8/5): Great place and lovely staff - Amazing staff
Well equipped
Huge room
Food was really good It is winter time and it's always difficult to warm the all the rooms with one A/C. Expect to have cold bathrooms or toilets.
Besides that we loved staying here.

- Stamena (10/5): The owner, the ryokan and its bath plus the outstanding kaiseki dinner in my room are unforgettable! - Such a friendly owner. I have arrived earlier than planned, around 5 pm and she asked me if l want to have dinner and even prepared delicious kaiseki courses and breakfast the next day. I have never experienced such a flexibility before! The interior is beautiful and the bath in a stunning setting! Nothing

- Simon (10/5): A magical stay at Shinwaen - Shinwaen ryokan is a wonderful getaway that feels remote but is still close to all the amenities Aso has to offer. We stayed in the houses located in the garden area, near to the public onsens but with a small one of our own. We celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary there and could not have wished for a better stay. The house was amazing, the food was utterly incredible and the staff were about as pleasant and helpful as it’s possible to be. Some of the fixtures and fittings are looking a little worn, but that’s no real complaint as it adds to the charm

- Steven (9/5): I would come back. - Food was excellent with very accommodating staff. Newer ryokan but still had a nice atmosphere to experience a stay in a Japanese Ryokan. Nothing
- Jan-Erik (10/5): - Beautiful house
Very traditional ryokan
Great food
Great people ——
- Begoña (9/5): Increible - La restauracion y el onsen. Nada
- Jung (10/5): -
- Shu Hsien (10/5):
- Jing Kun (8/5): -
- Shu Yu (9/5): -
- Nikola (9/5): Tattoo-friendly and a great bang for your buck! - A wonderful place to stay, conveniently in town, however it's impossible to tell once you are inside the ryokan. The room is very comfortable and well maintained. Be aware if you are in the main building you can hear some activity from staff/other guests however only up until about 10pm. The staff were very courteous and welcoming and spoke fluent English. The meals were fantastic and of very high quality! I have stayed in other ryokan in Aso previously but this was by far the best quality (and bang for your buck!). It was my first time using an outdoor onsen, and tattoos are permitted. I was very grateful because many other ryokans forbid tattoos unless they are in private baths. The outdoor area was wonderful, I wish we had stayed an extra night simply to enjoy the other amenities at this ryokan.
- Enea (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aimin (10/5): A nice, friendly, delicious, elegant hotel. - A nice, friendly, delicious, elegant hotel.
- Suzanne (9/5): Great Snow Out in Las Vegas is quite an along which she will water flowers - I wanted my husband to experience a true ryokan and Shinwaen delivered the experience. The room was very roomy with a separate bed area and spacious living area, the onset was great with an option for outdoor or indoor spa options. The dinner and breakfast was a delicious traditional Japanese kaiseki menu. This had to do with the location of the ryokan that there wasn't a regular taxi stand. I didn't realize how difficulty it would be to obtain a taxi until I decided to reserve a taxi the morning of our departure. There was no taxi (it was thought that I could explain it, the Shinkansen directive and

- Parawee (10/5): Very relaxing and happiness staying - Very nice and eagerly staff
Beautiful and peaceful place to stay
We enjoyed private onsen in the room very much. Very delicious and neat dinner and breakfast None
- Ritch (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice room. Private Onsen is the best.
- Sebastian (7/5): Good - The dinner / breakfast Room was a little small
- Michal (10/5): Such a wonderful place we enjoyed staying in (one of the best in our trip) - I was not fully sure what to expect and I was so happy I chose this lovely place. Magic place within the city that once you go in, you find a wonderful special place.
The big wooden door are opened and you enter into the past. all is wood, Japanese style, very well decor and design. staff are amazing! they will do all they can to help, serve and welcome you. The room we had was in the main building, Japanese style, tatami area that was ready for teatime, heated, just perfect. There are public onsens and 2 privet ones. all seems very nice to enjoy them. we did not eat in house this time. We only had one night, and I would Easly be happy to stay more. we loved this wonderful place. nothing!
- Saikaew (8/5): There are too few public baths in the onsen. There should be a barrier because the weather is very cold. - The staff were friendly and helpful. Its location near the cemetery scared me.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Barry (8/5): Very good - Lovely interiors and gardens and nice range of private / shared onsen. Very warm and comfortable room with views of the mountains around. Friendly and helpful staff, very nice breakfast. Convenient for walking into the town centre for izakayas etc. Not a problem for us, but less a rural location and more edge of a small town, depending on what you are looking for.
- Shawn (8/5): Very good -
- June (10/5): Really great stay at a good price! - This was a great ryokan at a good price! We really enjoyed our stay here, and the staff was very helpful. We even got welcome beans at check in. We had a big room with tatami mats and futons, and a low table with chairs. The room also had a toilet and washing room, but you had to use the public or private onsen to shower. That was more than fine for us, as we really enjoyed the private onsen. There is no booking system, you can just use it when it is available.
- Yoshi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zhi (9/5): peaceful and delicious - The food was excellent - thoughtful and well-prepared. Room was clean and comfortable. The private onsen temperature could've been better moderated as it was a little too hot.
- See (9/5): Superb - The onsens at the adjacent building were really nice and usually empty so it feels like we had our own private onsens all the time. The kaiseiki dinner is a selection of dishes prepared with local ingredients and is highly recommended.
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katarzyna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eman (10/5): Exceptional - The staff are very professional and organized. I really appreciate that they took my special requests seriously. The service is superb. The place is so beautiful, spacious and clean. The food is great.
- E_s_67 (10/5): Beautiful, authentic and traditional place to stay with private onsen - We can only recommend this beautiful, authentic, traditional place to stay. I stayed here with my daughter on a road trip. You are so lovingly looked after here and the house gives off a relaxed and healthy atmosphere. You should have some curiosity for Japanese lifestyle and be able to communicate flexibly with Google Translator.
- Wasin (9/5): Superb - private onsen
- Attapon (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent and Professional service
- Yao-jen (10/5): Exceptional - It is worth every penny you spend.
- Sally (10/5): Spacious ryokan with great facilities and good food. Will definitely want to revisit and stay more days ❤️😊👍 - Very personalised with Chinese speaking assistant assigned to us. Love the facilities as we have our private onsen and a public one. The extensive of courses during dinner and breakfast are amazing good 😊 Wish we can have more time for dinner 😁
- Howard (8/5): Good and will recommend if you ok with the grave - Clean and friendly staff Next to hospital and grave
- Snxo_ (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phek (7/5): Good -
- Pornchai (10/5): Worth it! - "We had an exceptional stay. Gratitude to the entire staff for their generous and kind assistance. The outdoor onsen is fantastic, and the breakfast/dinner is truly delightful. While they primarily speak Japanese, Google Translate proved helpful. You might have to use taxis to get there or you can take a bus. It’s worth!
- Kl (10/5): It was an amazing stay- the staff provided great hospitality. Great local food, recommended to book the breakfast& d - Hot spring & private bath facilities, good food, great place to relax after a day’s hike!
- Ana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pales (10/5): Exceptional - Actually everything the onsen/hotel provided. Private onsen was too small for a larger people or group, but I can hardly complain. I still recommend the place wholeheartedly.
- Runyu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rcb (10/5): Wonderful - The Japanese-style room was spacious, clean and comfortable.
The property has public hot springs for men and women as well as two private hot springs. Everything you need to enjoy them is provided.
The staff is amazingly patient and hospitable. I was greeted warmly upon arrival and provided with a welcome drink and snack. The staff carried my luggage up the stairs to my room.
I wish I had spent more than one night here and very much look forward to returning in the future.
- Sin (10/5): Exceptional - Everything is perfect. The service is fantastic. The food is delicious and innovative.
- Jennie (6/5): Nice, but rushed. - The food was delicious. The room and gardens pleasant. The outdoor onsen was very nice. We had only one night here. First time in a ryokan and we found it to be very rushed. Checkin was by 6 and thats what time we arrived. We were rushed out of the car, into our room, then told dinner was in 10 mins. We rushed an onsen then were rushed to dinner. The morning was very similar and then we checked out. It was a nice place overall, but the staff seemed very intense with minimal explanations (especially in English). I suggest if you are staying here checkin as early as you can for a more enjoyable stay.
- Lucy (8/5): Very good -
- Yi (7/5): nice - quite environment a bit smell in the room
- Somchai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pui (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wu (8/5): A beautiful traditional Japanese style hotel with a bit remote location and pricey dinner charges - very sizable traditional Japanese room with beautiful gardening and outdoors/indoors hot springs. The staff service are good but the hotel has rules with less flexibility. The location is not close to Aso station but can be accessed by local bus. The meals are nice but quite pricey compared with outside restaurants.
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
- Junlu412 (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (10/5): A great ryokan experience - Everything.
Breakfast was great. Made me wish we had ordered dinner! Staff asked us to put away our tatami mats and bedding in the closets before checkout. Seemed strange since the closet also contained all the unused bedding since the room is rated for 4 guests
- Peifen (9/5): Superb -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The food was awesome, the in house onsen was great
- Imke (10/5): Great Get-Away - The entire stay was amazing with the best food we had during our stay in Japan. The hot spring was authentic and enjoyable. I will go back there if I get a chance!
