Guest Reviews
- Steen (8/5): -
- Vania (10/5): -
- William (8/5): Lovely staff and pleasant stay. - Service Noise outside
- Gloria (8/5): -
- Koen (7/5): Basis verblijf - locatie en vriendelijk personeel Te weinig ervaring en het aanbod qua ontbijt. Desnoods gewoon gemengd fruit, yoghurt en grenola extra aanbieden. De koffie was slappe thee.
- Warren (7/5): -
- Administrator (1/5): Wouldn't recommend unfortunately. - Staff were pleasant enough, apologised for mistakes, good wifi. Dirty stained sheets on bed on arrival, looked as if someone had slept in it recently and then made it up. Bits on floor, dirty towel left in shower and toilet dirty. Car park was tight, overgrown with weeds and piles of rubbish. Staff apologised and resolved the situation, lady was friendly, however not ideal after a long journey. Rooms are very dated and smelt of smoke.
- Robert (2/5): The County Hotel, Never Again……! - Nothing good really. Especially for the price. There was no breakfast, but we paid for breakfast and it wasn’t cooked very well. The ultra fast WiFi wasn’t fast, in fact it wouldn’t connect. The shower was either too hot or too cold. The owner stood over the staff watching their every move. There clearly wasn’t enough staff. For the price I paid I would have expected breakfast and someone at reception. Absolutely feel short changed
- Barry (8/5): -
- Paul (1/5): - Nothing Not being able to check in.
No one answering the phone.
No one coming to the door.
Being left outside after midnight and having to sleep in my van in freezing temperatures.
Getting no response to emails saying I'd be late because of a flight delay.
Not getting confirmation of my booking.
Being promised self check in information and getting nothing.
- Nina (7/5): Redelijk - Centrale locatie, goed bed Kleine badkamer
- Loughrey (5/5): We just wanted to break up our trip and have a bed for the night . We were happy with the accommodation for an overnight - Internet was excellent. Hotel room was well priced. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Needs refurbishment. Our room was small but comfortable
- Robert (6/5): Pretty average - It was ok nothing fancy The dirt
- Ilka (6/5): - The bed was comfortable, with clean white sheets. I slept really well (despite see below).
My single room had all the basic facilities, tea, coffee, kettle, TV etc.
The room was cold on arrival, but once I got hold of a member of staff, the central heating was switched on for the evening and also a portable heater supplied, which was nice. The lady I spoke to was friendly and helpful.
The location of the hotel is handy, close to car parks, shops and cafés. I managed the code entry system fine, thanks to the video clip provided.
However, I felt uncomfortable about not having a lock on the inside of my room door, as sound really travelled through the wall, floors and door to the corridor, the main door was always open, no code needed (whenever I went in and out of the building anyway) and I wondered who else knew or could figure out my door code.
I felt a little uncomfortable whenever I heard footsteps, and pushed the chair in between my door and bed for peace of mind.
A lock on the inside of a hotel room door is a basic requirement, I think, for making a solo travelling female (or anyone else really) feel safe, especially in a self check-in hotel, with no visible staff around.
The shower pressure wasn't great, but fine for one night.
- Anne (9/5): Conveint and clean with friendly staff - Convenient location with parking clean rooms and lots of space
- Robert (5/5): It done the jobbie - It was ok to get the head down but don’t expect luxury Same as above
- Kathleen (8/5): It was a short stay but the facilities were good and the staff friendly and welcoming. - It is a lovely old hotel in the heart of the town. The restaurant is excellent and the staff is friendly and helpful. This was not a problem with the property but rather with Booking. I received confusing notices about the check in procedure, including a notification that I had received an email with certain information when I hadn’t. In the end the hotel gave me the instructions needed for self check in which was not what was described in the correspondence from Booking.
- Richard (8/5): - Good location. Nice facilities. Food good. Nothing.
- Dorothy (8/5): it met my needs for a work visit - clean facilities there was no evidence of fresh fruit options at breakfast
- John (10/5): -
- Andrew (6/5): Hotel ok, give the food a miss in the bar - Hotel set up was ok, although code entry a bit vague, basically your room number and an added number to the end, same on all rooms so not very secure as easy to work out any other rooms entry. Bar was ok and set out well, was told they made curries from fresh, with all fresh ingredients.
So ordered 2 different curries, with starters and nans, both curries were same colour and consistency, absolutely not cooked from scratch, the sauce tasted like a pasta bake sauce. We had to return them as not a curry at all, cant comment on the starters as despite being starters, clue is in the name, we never received them...
- Barry (8/5): Easy access and loved the self check in facility - Convenient location Noisy door closers
- Darren (10/5): Great sleep in a great location - Great location and staff were amazing, bar and restaurant is reasonably priced, room was great, slept really well, free parking, perfect for my stay
- Murphy (1/5): Terrible, click away from this hotel straight away and stay somewhere that's worth your money - Nothing it's a terrible hotel, no standards at all Bathroom and room was disgusting, clearly no cleaning had been done. Plumbing absolutely stank. The lock on the front door doesn't work properly so had to stand in the rain trying to unlock it late at night. Awful experience, avoid like the plague
- barrie (8/5): -
- jochen (2/5): -
- andrew (7/5): Prefect stopover for walkers - Location - The hotel id basic; however, clean and practicable. Priced appropriately for the facilities. No negatives - This is a 'no thrills' hotel that is a perfect location for exploring walks around the Borders.
- James (10/5): -
- Nicula (10/5): -
- Clive (9/5): Enjoyable. - Good sized bedroom with a very comfortable bed, Good communication and easy check in. The bar was clean and well laid out. Lee the bar person/waitress was excellent. Very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent. Would definitely stay there again
- Marleen (8/5): -
- Richard (4/5): My one night. - Location was fine. Var park covered by CCTV reportedly. It's all a bit tired and run down. Car park is a waste tip. Restaurant/ dining room is a cafe by day by the looks of things. Not very busy. Food is poor, mistly reheated stuff, not always co.letely cooked through.
- Christine (9/5): -
- Jacky (7/5): - check in worked well. Room was good breakfast was disappointing - only one roll unless you wanted full cooked breakfast - no fruit, no toast, nothing else
- David (7/5): Cheap and cheerful - The bed was comfy and the shower was good. Now this shouldn’t be a complaint however the room was too warm and unable to turn heating down.
- Russell (6/5): Enjoyable - Central location Lukewarm shower
- Cavanagh (7/5): Good for a 1 night stay - It was central in the town and the room was a good size The lack of staff and the minimum breakfast options.
- Moira (2/5): Cheap cost cutting hostel that over promises and under delivers - The waitress was very good Poor room nothing met description .. more hostel than hotel . No water in the room. Soap was so diluted it wasn’t soap any more … Couldn’t fill the kettle from the sink ( no chocolates as promised)check-in was weird .. frequent excessive but unhelpful communication. It involves a no person contact however The security was in question as we could work out the code for rooms on our floor, as they followed a pattern . No connection between the food service and rooms apparently so breakfast booking was not recognised.. when they agreed to give us breakfast they had scored out loads of items under breakfast on the cooked breakfast menu ( although available for extra money) so they could cut the cost by reducing the inclusive items in the cooked breakfast. Despite the apparent price of
£12:95 not changing. Very expensive for what it is .. if you look like a hostel and act like a hostel you should only charge hostel prices
- Christine (5/5): Has potential to be a nice place to stay. - Good location with off street parking. Self check in worked well.
Good wi-fi connection Room was a bit grubby. Had to remake the bed before using it as the sheet and mattress protector were not on properly. The shower plug was filthy. There were dog biscuits and some tablets in the bin under the bin bag. Room needed a proper deep clean.
- Brian (5/5): Average - Room was comfortable Breakfast was awful
- Kirkland (8/5): -
- Anthony (8/5): -
- Wendy (7/5): - Clean. Breakfast ok
- Colin (10/5): - Staff really helpful
- kevin (9/5): -
- scott (7/5): -
- Sarah Jane (7/5): -
- Anna (9/5): -
- Debbie (7/5): Good value for one night stay - Good cooked breakfast . Value for money Noisy and very warm in room.
- Paul (8/5): Safe parking(Motorcycle) Comfortable bed, Excellent shower. - Exactly what I wanted. I didn't eat there but the meals smelled really nice. squeaking floor boards, really annoyed me, I felt guilty when I used the bathroom, in case I woke anyone.
- Stephen (10/5): A thoroughly enjoyable weekend - Breakfast was ok , the location was perfect a tho
- Michael (4/5): -
- David (9/5): -
- frank (7/5): - Quiet and central Haggis and potato scones at breakfast were overcooked as if done in an air fryer
- Kathryn (2/5): I was bitten by BED BUGS all over my arms. Staff took no action. - I liked Selkirk as a town, and the surrounding countryside. I was bitten by bed bugs all over my arms. I showed one of the insects that I found in the bed to a staff. He agreed it was a bed bug, and he agreed that the welts on my arms were bedbug bites, but he took no action. He didn't even apologize, but only insisted that nothing like this had ever happened before. I had to throw out all my luggage and spent 3 days in a painful histaminic rash. They didn't even offer to compensate me for my room, for the first-aid medicaments, or the luggage I had to throw out.
- Richard (2/5): Nowhere near as friendly as it used to be. - The lounge was nice enough The single room was more like a cell. The place really lacked a welcoming presence and someone telling you where to go and how the hotel worked. Breakfast very uninspired. Small portions and slow service at dinner time.
- Brooking (9/5): A hot spot in the cold - I should explain that the hotel works on door keycodes. Didn't see any staff hence tje low score. It was warm clean and comfortable Nothing much
- Gwen (7/5): -
- Gareth (9/5): - Staff polite informative, the room was clean functional. I found the code lock system bit awkward a lot of customers may have difficulty if they not that technology savvy just think normal lock and key better as everybody would be ok with that.
- Richard (9/5): Perfect for an overnight stay - Good location good helpful staff N/A
- George (3/5): Will not be back - Notihing staff impersonal didn't speak. Had to ask for tea and also toast for breakfast. Not a pleasant experience
- Joanna-Louise (7/5): Nice place with willing staff - I missed breakfast as I had to leave before it started at 8am.
Willing and helpful staff. Hotel is old and shabby. Painting in bedroom and dining room/bar would improve visual appeal.
Upgrade furniture.
Auto lock checkin a nightmare!
- Banu (10/5): - Rooms are clean and spacious. Heating was very good. Very centrally located, definitely recommend. Just the tv channels are limited and would be nice if this can be fixed.
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Janice (4/5): - Had parking and good wifi... Was on the second floor and they had no lift ...
Rooms could do with a coat of paint. En suite was nice looked liked it was just refitted.
Breakfast was a hit or miss... bacon so hard couldn't eat it.
- Nathan (7/5): -
- Andrea (8/5): -
- Elizabeth (3/5): - The room was lovely, cosy and clean. The entry systems. Breakfast.
- Jo (8/5): -
- David (9/5): I will stay here again - Friendly, good food comfortable warm room, free parking Some noise from the street below but it was in the town centre
- Richard (9/5): Great stay, friendly staff, safe parking, good food - Private parking are for free. Good location where after 10pm, it was very quiet. Good value for money and great location for my needs in Edinburgh. Friendly staff and comfortable bed. Clean room and great en suite with power shower. Nothing.
- William (8/5): -
- Delyth (8/5): - In a central location with parking available Key code entry was straightforward (thanks for the useful video), however it was a bit strange not having someone there to check you in.
- MICHAEL (6/5): An experience! We thought from the reviews and photos we were booking into something that it clearly is not but most pro - Great little town and thank goodness for the fleece restaurant in town which is great Code entry even to the rooms . Breakfast really is an after thought .
- Elisabeth (7/5): - There was no breakfast though it was supposed to be included
- amanda (6/5): -
- Shaun (8/5): Great spot for first night of Border Abbeys Way. - Convenient location in town centre. Toasty warm room with comfortable single bed. Prefer to speak to someone rather than key pad code check in.
- Robert (3/5): - Central Location. Reasonably spacious room. Good tv and tea/coffee tray. Dirty entrance to the hotel and carpets to lower stairs. No proper reception nor staff. Digital entry very difficult to see and use. Bed were comfortable but very short. Very small basic shower room. Very poor shower with little pressure. Very limited breakfast. The porridge was awful, tasted like instant stuff you get on aeroplanes. The staff were unwelcoming, uncommunicative and seemed to hardly speak English. The hotel was covered with tacky laminated notices and resembled a doss house or institution.
- james (8/5): -
- Neil (9/5): A lovely hotel in a fantastic part of the country - Could not have asked for any more, the room was large, warm, comfortable and clean. The decor was recent and there were no signs of wear.
The breakfast was served in the bar area, the food was tasty and fresh as it is cooked to order There wasnt much to dislike if i was to pick a fault it would be the lack of update via the Booking .com app to tell me check in details were to be sent to WhatsApp but when i found the message the instructions were spot on
- Rock (8/5): -
- Marco (6/5): -
- Berit (7/5): Good value for money and lovely dinnner - Warm rooms with great showers. Fantastic dinner Breakfast was meant to start at 7.30 but he didn’t arrive until 8am and then it took ages to get everyone served.
- Michael (8/5): Comfortable, clean and good value. - Location was excellent, staff friendly and helpful. A lot of technology, and the water pressure could be better in the bathroom.
- Neil (9/5): Excellent place to stay - The rooms were superb. Very comfortable ,modern and newly refurbished
- lisa (10/5): Great value for money, would happily return - The room was very comfortable The stairs
- Connie (8/5): -
- kevin (8/5): - Overall clean and basic value for money
- Nerijus (10/5): -
- Colin (8/5): met myrequirements - Room clean and tidy. Excellent tea/ coffee supplies. Older property but In good order Breakfast good .
- DaveM59 (8/5): - Free parking, good breakfast, bar, good Indian restaurant near by. The town was a bit dead but ok for a stop over.
- Billy (8/5): stayed for one night, more than happy with the accommodation. - nice, clean, centrally located. pleasant stay, would recommend.
- Isabelle Kelly (7/5): - The room was very clean and bright. The bed was king size and very comfortable Don't like the self check in. Too impersonal. Lacks the human touch.
Breakfast was a disappointment
- Gavin (5/5): - Room size, Location, Friendly Staff. Accessing main entrance, room also and communication with pin codes and phoning staff. No welcoming reception looked dated and unkempt.. Poor WiFi and dated non smart TV for viewing or music options. No ventilation in bathroom.
- stephen (5/5): Below expectation - Comfortable room Breakfast grill was ok but served on cold plates. Tea and coffee were very poor with unpleasant taste. Waiter not very welcoming.
Family room that I booked with 2 double beds was not available due to leaking pipe apparently so was given twin room with single beds. Told it was the same price.
- Wayne (7/5): -
- Andy (6/5): -
- Scott (4/5): - Bathroom window surrounded by mould, paint flaking off walls and room door
- Stephen (8/5): Perfectly acceptable for the price paid, improved since our stay this time last year - Very clean and tidy breakfast very good. Pillows were not very substantial and only one thin pillow per person
