- William (8/5): - I love the location. I loved the gazebo. The one person I encountered once I called upon them was very helpful + friendly. The restaurant was closed in the summer until October? My key was left with my name + reference numbers. No human contact, until of course I had issues. The lovely lady responded in person quickly and absolved any problems I had. No air conditioning. Luckily the evening was in the 50°'s so I opened the windows. Then I was put into the side building, not the historic building. The property just barely met my expectations, because of the lack of exposure as well

- Virginia (10/5): Charming historic inn - This was our second stay at this historic, lovely & comfortable inn. Our room #2 had a king size bed & a separate sitting area which could have accommodated another adult or small kids on a foldout cot in the closet. Furnished with a mix of contemporary & vintage furniture. Very clean. Showers have great water pressure. The mini breakfast in the inn’s bar/restaurant includes delicious homemade muffins. The restaurant is open for dinner—only on Thursdays & Fridays at present. The area is semi rural but located near Montgomery Center, St Alban’s & Enosburg where there are restaurants & other amenities like the Eloquent Page Bookstore, worth a visit for the book lover. Six wooden covered bridges to explore in the area; at one of them we even met a 5th generation descendant of the original bridge builders, the Jewett brothers. The Black Lantern Inn is a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxing getaway. Definitely recommend 👍

- Virginia (10/5): Cozy historic inn—lots of character & charm - Black Lantern Inn is a cozy place to stay. The exterior may be showing its age—1803!—but the interior exudes lots of character & charm. It’s listed on the National Historic Registry. Easy check in. Our Rm 6 was spacious, clean, quiet, with comfy & some vintage furnishings. All rooms appear to be on the 2nd floor & there's no obvious elevator (it’s an old building after all). Caveat re: our bathroom: toilet seat is loose & needs to be screwed tight; & don’t flush toilet while someone’s showering. Luckily this shower is roomy so hubby was able to dodge the sudden blast of hot H2O! The shower had a corner bench & jets along the bottom which we didn’t use. Had pleasant interactions w/Catherine, one of the very nice hosts. They were very responsive to our needs & gave great restaurant recommendations. Each morning we enjoyed a continental breakfast in the bar—muffins, yogurt, juice. Great coffee & the homemade muffins were a treat. Catherine said there are 5(?) families who rallied together to reopen & maintain this lovely historic inn. We applaud them. It’s a welcome change from a chain hotel. We look forward to staying again, hopefully the restaurant will have re-opened. Definitely recommend this charming getaway in Montgomery VT, with scenic covered bridges & waterfalls nearby. One comment: some of the border wallpaper in Rm 6 is starting to peel from the wall though this didn’t affect our stay. I’d just hate to see it pull away more.
- Michael (10/5): - I gave everything a five-star review, however this is an unstaffed property so the service I mentioned was related to housekeeping and whomever put out the breakfast. I never saw anyone, however, all communication I had with them via email was excellent. I also noted that I enjoyed the area. However, the restaurant at the hotel and all the restaurants in this immediate area are shut down from Easter until May 15th.

- Julianna (6/5): Good location, but expensive for the experience - The B&B mostly lived up to what we expected. Rustic, antique furniture, and decor all made sense to the facility. However, the one end table in our bedroom was on the verge of collapsing if you put a drink on it. The water pressure / flow made washing your hair very challenging, but not totally unexpected from an older property. The B&B check in process was easy and accommodating since we arrived much later than expected. The location was close to Jay Peak which made for a convenient ski weekend and was only about a five minute drive from the small downtown to find food options. The beds were not comfortable. Antique furniture to fit the style is great, but the bed felt very old for the cost of the room on a holiday weekend. The breakfast was just coffee, yogurt, and a fresh bread (which was delicious, but was down to one slice when we arrived at 8am) so certainly wouldn't say it was worth the built in cost for a "continental breakfast." The property did handle it quickly, but the walls are paper thin. The guests sharing the unit with us were wildly rude. The children were running up and downstairs constantly, the lit a fire (unsure if it was an inside fireplace or outdoor), but our room stunk of fire and not in a good way for an entire evening. The kids and parents were yelling so constantly it really took away from the environment. Again, the owners did handle this and have them quiet down for our 3rd night, but the lack of insulation between rooms was really bad. We could hear entire conversations from the other guests while they were in the tub in their room from our bed. And the tub had jets that made such a deep reverberating sound in our room we had to leave it was so hard to handle.

- Ryan (10/5): Cozy Inn close to Jay Peak - Cozy place. Not far from Jay Peak. We had a light continental breakfast provided by the Inn in the morning and then went skiing at Jay. Had a good experience and would stay there again

Check in was super easy as our room key was just sitting on a table when we walked in the door, with our room number on it (makes me wonder if there was another key already taken by a random person). The staircase was steep, narrow and STRAIGHT UP!! Wasn’t expecting that!! Glad we are not handicapped, as this was mentioned nowhere! Room was clean and comfortable, even had our own fireplace. However, the bathroom was TINY, then a light burned out so doing hair and makeup was a bit challenging also not enough towels, but nobody around to bring me any?!?! Restaurant downstairs was convenient but very mediocre at best. Our stay could’ve been worse, definitely wasn’t the best, but not many choices in this remote area

Turns out there was supposed to be written directions to go to house next door that is part of the Black Lantern property ... our B4 room was in that house. Very sparse cellular power so could not call/text owner.... finally drove about 1 mile away and gained more bars on phone and communicated with owner ... received directions and checked into our room.

- Jaana (7/5): Overall we enjoyed the spot. A few improvements would make this a great stay! - The property was very quant, pretty and quiet. Had a lot of charm. Continental breakfast was good, strong coffee, fruit juice, yogurt,muffin and water served in the main building. Not large but enough and well presented. It was a hot day, no air conditioning in room. There was a small fridge, but no water. A jug of water would have been great. Also tea/coffee in room as the main building was closed. Restaurant was closed on our day so no access to any food or drinks (we were on a motorcycle) so very inconvenient to get back into town on such a hot day. Location is not in the town.The bathroom needed new silicone in bath/shower as it was black…. Fresh modern summer linen would improve the overall look and feel of this room. TV was hard to work out, and volume button didn’t work, hard to hear because we had to have a fan on high cause it was so hot! We didn’t read the fine print on the restaurant/bar being closed on certain days when we booked which would have changed the whole experience for us. There were no other guests so we felt a bit abandoned. Briefly saw one person on arrival for the key and got the tv working.

- Bernard (9/5): Nice place to stay near Jay. - The room was comfortable. I ate dinner at the restaurant and the food was excellent and the staff friendly and attentive. It was a little difficult finding my room as it wasn't in the main building and the other building had no sign. I was also unable to figure out how to work the Keurig coffee-maker. I often find them confusing to use and they waste resources with individual coffee pods. I ended up buying coffee somewhere else.

- David (8/5): - The Black Lantern Inn goes back to 1802 and is in the heart of Montgomery, a small rural town in far northern VT. The room was spacious, clean with a comfortable bed. Nothing fancy - mostly vintage furniture. Checkin is curious in that there is no desk person as such but your key with a paper with your name and room number on it is on a bench in the vestibule as you come in. You can contact the owners by text or phone as needed. The bathroom en suite with a good shower. The dining area is attractive and, while I didn't eat a full meal there, friends of mine who have had dinners there say the food is very good. They do provide a modest continental breakfast. There is a lot of beautiful scenery in the area and the Inn is not too far from the Jay Peak ski resort. Quebec and its beautiful towns is only a short drive further north. I enjoyed my two nights at the Inn and would not hesitate to return.

- MARGARET (10/5): neat Inn. loved our room - we certainly enjoyed our stay.. Dinner was downstairs. so after a long day of skiing it was pleasant to eat and go back to our room. I know it said continental breakfast. I guess I had a different idea of a continental breakfast. since we were the only 2 people in the Inn at the time I didn't expect hot food but there were no options. There was 2 tiny muffins and 2 yogurts. and fruit juice and coffee. No real fruit. And no live person... I heard someone downstairs but when we came down at 7:30 there was no one to help us out or ask for anything else My spouse ate both muffins because he hates yogurt . I got the yogurt.

Room should have been called the 'ladybug suite' given how many occupied the space. Breakfast was minimalist. Wifi service was spotty at best. Minimal amenities for an upmarket price.

- David (8/5): Lovely inn. will certainly consider a return visit when i ski Jay Peak this winter. - Continental breakfast was simple but tasty. coffee hot and strong. the pub area is the perfect location to start the day, and the dining room (we didn't dine there) is inviting and rustic. check-in was a breeze and the innkeeper was friendly and welcoming. We went to dinner in Montgomery Center and returned (~ 7 pm) to a full parking lot, owing to diners. I had to park on the street and then go out to move my car when the lot emptied out. Not a huge deal, and not sure what you can do about it, but on a frigid night in the dead of winter, i would not have been happy.
- Sharon (3/5): Disappointing but in a lovely setting - The location was lovely, lots of autumn colour, scenery and a bit off the beaten track so away from the crowds Unfortunately aside from the location and free parking, we didn't particularly enjoy our stay at the Inn. It was shabby and rundown, with no information at all about anything! Just a key with our name on it. There were a number of things that we weren't happy about, but we didn't contact the owners so didn't give them the opportunity to put things right. We just felt very unwelcome as it was obviously the end of the season and we did wonder if they had taken our reservation in error!

Keurig coffee, canned juices, muffins and good yogurt on the bar in the morning. We didn’t have a chance to eat at the restaurant downstairs but the menu looked absolutely amazing!

When we tried to contact the proprietors there was no cell service, eventually, the text went through, but, we never heard back until we woke in the morning. The website said that they had a fridge in the room no fridge for my sister's insulin so we kept buying ice the ice machine was in a different building not good. The hair dryer did not work yes it turned on but it turned bright Red and then turn off. The tub/shower had no bar handles the tub was slippery. Nice room but they need to upgrade on these things.

We were fortunate enough to arrive on a night where they had opened up their bar to the locals and had live music. We sat in the front porch and enjoyed chatting with several people. The owners are very welcoming.

- Rita (8/5): - We were attending a wedding locally and i called to see if we could check in early to change. We were able to do this without a problem. We asked about dining options and were directed to the nearby Jolly store, which fit the bill.

- Ellen (6/5): Depends on what you’re looking for - If you enjoy staying in historic buildings and this is for you. Personally, not my thing. Couldn’t get the heat to come up during the night, but I noticed it was on in the morning. There are no amenities in the room, (Fridge, coffee maker) and the room is very small. It was clean and comfortable.

The continental breakfast included excellent coffee, delicious home made maple scones and an appropriate assortment of juices and organic Vermont sources yogurts. - Jerry (10/5): - We were upgraded to two room suite since our planned room had leak in the roof, no extra charge. Place is well kept and clean. Our new room had a fire place and Jacuzzi tub. Restaurant in main building was excellent, love the bar area too. Full breakfast on Saturday and Sunday was wonderful.
