Guest Reviews

- Myrah (7/5): - The guest house is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. The room provided to us as a couple was very small and seemed even smaller with all our luggage (there are other rooms too in this traditional japanese house-turned hotel but dont know about their size!). The common facilities were not pristine clean and didnt seem like they were regularly cleaned. The towels are provided for some fee but they were not clean too. I guess, this hotel is for those who dont mind with the cleanliness or sleeping space.
- Naomi (4/5): - The workers were very kind and everything was clean. There was no way to lock my room door from the outside. I was told when I checked in to keep my wallet and keys in a locker downstairs when I leave the premises, but had I known that before booking, I would never have booked. Also, my room on the 2nd floor could hardly lock even from the inside; if you tried hard enough, you could enter the room even when locked from inside. It felt extremely unsafe. I know this is a guesthouse with shared rooms, but I chose a private room on purpose to feel safe. Very disappointing, I ended up not staying the second and last night, I just went back home all the way to Tokyo, I couldn't handle it.

- Melissa (8/5): - Very clean and small little ryuken in Kumamoto. Staff were lovely and great to chat to for locals recommendations. Tatami mats were clean, surprisingly comfortable to sleep on and shared bathrooms were in pristine condition. Location is inconvenient - approx 20min walk from Kumamoto Station, not situated close to tram line. 4min walk from bus stop, however that bus stop does not go past the main train station; this bus stop convenient if wanting to go into the city centre/castle, however buses only come every 30mins or so.

- Claire (7/5): Really sweet place and good value for money but not central. - The hostess was lovely and the traditional rooms were very cute. For the money I would stay again. It was quite far from the centre and had no direct public transport outside peak hours. I walked from the station for 17mins.
- Noor (8/5): -
- Kramer (9/5): Fantastic - It was such a great traditional set up, located very centrally so that amazing sights can be reached easily. You can also hire a bicycle to access even more of Kumamoto We loved every aspect, so there was nothing to dislike

- Lou-Anne (9/5): -

Near big supermarket and combinis.
Very very cool kitchen
- BOJIE (9/5): -
- Kyle (3/5): a very basic hostel - A clean hostel with futons. The sleeping area is air-conditioned and the kitchen is functional with a small fridge. There is a small air-conditioned lounge for guests. However there are very few guests. The photographs depicting the hostel are NOT representative of the hostel which is difficult to find because the directions are ambiguous. Overall, the hostel is only marginally comfortable. The sleeping rooms are open-plan. There is no provision for shelves for phones or chargers or other small items. In fact there are only two power outlets in the rooms for 5-6 people. There are some stools in the common area and chairs in the lounge. The only other two guests that I encountered stayed for one night only. There was no checkin service for a guest that arrived circa 7pm; i.e. the hostel is mostly unattended.
The hostel is not located in an area for public transport. What public transport that exists operates either on the half hour or the hour and only one bus stop is located close to the hostel. There is a 20-25 minute walk to the nearest tram stop or Kumamoto (JR) station. The tram service is regular each (roughly) 15 minutes.
- SUNGWOO (10/5): - Host is kind
- Ryan (10/5): -
- Evan (10/5): -
- Angel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Antonione (10/5): Exceptional - Traditional feeling Hostel with a lot of services of acommodation to offer. Well located, felt extremely comfortable and well served for all my needs. Offers towels they wash everyday, comfortable kitchen, tables and lounge. I was able to bond with other friendly guests, and the staff was very kind and helpful, ひまり in particular was very kind! Sharing bedrooms didn't feel awkward or uncomfortable on any of the days.
- Francisco (10/5): Exceptional - The place is great and the staff is awesome
- Yejin (3/5): Poor - 1. Clean Tatami room experience with low budget 1. No privacy, walls are just literally paper, I can hear every tiny sound next room people make. If they talk, I can listen very clearly as if they talk to me, I was alone in my room, but I felt like I am with many people. Its too noisy sometimes when people talk in kitchen or anywhere in same floor, I can listen very clearly so no peace.
2. No door locker, basically there is no restrictions to come others room, my room next to maingate, public area and everyone just can slide the door to enter my room. Nothing will most likely happen, but still not very comfortable to sleep.
3. I use lots of hostel, and they usually gave me one big bath towel for free, or nothing. I asked to staff if there is free towel and they said yes. So I didn’t bring it and they offered one tiny and thin hand towel tingy.. its not for after shower.
- Dorien (9/5): The house is beautiful and the hosts are such a delight!! - The guesthouse is a beautiful, typically Japanese place with tatami mats and futons! The hosts were an absolute highlight, a group of wonderful and fun people who invited me to play games and enjoy meals. They made my stay in Kumamoto so much fun!! The entire atmosphere in the guesthouse is amazing and as soon as I arrived I considered staying an extra night. The Japanese-style walls let in a lot of light in the morning, so I woke up early each day. Recommend bringing a sleeping mask :) and there's no smooth public transport option from Kumamoto Station, so it's a 15-20 min walk. Can't think of anything else for the rest! Would book again for sure!!
(8/5): Very good - I loved that they had a rental bike for 500 yen. I biked all the way out to the Nami statue one day, and all around Kumamoto. They also had an area in the hall that was perfect for reading a book at night. The futon was only so-so comfort wise, but I generally slept through the nights without issue. There also isn't much privacy in the dorm room (not that I expected much, but I prefer capsule style dorms more for this reason). There's just a small wall partition between each of the futons that someone standing can see over.
- Lucien (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lohmiller (9/5): Superb -
- Leonardo (10/5): I would totally come back! - I had a lovely stay! The staff were fantastic—friendly and helpful. The location is super convenient, just a short walk from two bath houses, restaurants, and a supermarket. The place itself is cozy and comfortable, perfect for relaxing. And bonus: they have a shoe dryer, which was surprisingly handy! The only thing I missed was a drying machine for clothes, in case you need to do laundry during your stay.
- Thomas (8/5): Very good - It was a nice experience to stay at this Japanese style accommodation. I slept on a Futon in a tatami room. For me it was comfortable, but for others it was too hard. It's also a lovely place with a huge kitchen. However, it was getting quite cold at night and since the walls are thin, you can hear your room neighbours.
- Ruby (8/5): Good value, beautiful facilities. - Beautiful house and very comfortable. The host was very responsive and kind. The garden also had really nice light features! We found good local recommendations for restaurants in the brochures available in the kitchen. House is a little far without a car.
- Olalla (9/5): Superb - One of the most beautiful Guesthouses I've stayed in 2 months traveling Japan ❤️ I stayed at the bamboo room and it was a cosy, comfortable 4.5 tatami room with views to the garden with carved bamboos that light up at night.
The kitchenette and common areas were big, beautiful and well-equipped.
He location was great - 15min walking distance from Kumamoto Station and 30min from Kumamoto Castle. There's also good direct public transport connections.
The owner was super nice and sweet. I would definitely come back!
- Steven (9/5): Superb - traditional style, pleasant host
- Jedrzej (10/5): Exceptional - I honestly did not expect to get such a large room for so little money. The place is very clean, with all the necessary amenities. There's a large common area, with a fully equipped kitchen. The host was also super nice and helpful.
- Jedidiah (8/5): No title, but good place - Traditional japanese vibes, place was super clean. Feels more like I'm staying in someone's traditional japanese house than I am staying in a hostel. Room is air conditioned and you're free to set the air con to whatever setting you want (as long as other guests are also fine with it). Amenities were also there: hot and cold clean water, kitchen, microwave, there's even a shop that sells coffee and instant noodles in case you need it (payment is trust based since owner isn't there to watch it all the time). You can also borrow a bike for 100 yen per hour (up to 500 yen, then it's 500 yen for the whole day). The main shower room comes with a bathtub, and although they ask you not to fill it up, it's still nice to have the space when showering, since usually hostel showers in japan are tiny. Sheets were comfy but also made me kinda itchy? One of the guys sleeping in my room was snoring very loudly but that's part of a shared room. Hallway gets cold at night since there's no heating for it. It's quite a walk away from any stations or interesting places unless you want to take a bus to get there, and even then it's still around 10 minutes to the nearest bus stop.
- Shiying (9/5): Superb -
- Guido (9/5): Superb - Shoko is very helpful
- Aumais (10/5): Adorable guesthouse - Adorable little guesthouse, well equipped kitchen and nice staff !
- Wanda (10/5): Excellent -
- Wei-jen (9/5): Superb -
- Beverley (9/5): Pleasant and a good place to base yourself to explore . - The guest house is comfortable and the amenities are good. The host is very friendly. It was lovely to catch up with the other guests in the kitchen. The guest house is near a main road so there is a bit of traffic noise. The host does not live on n site but is there between 4 and 9 pm and is contactable other times.
- Galo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Una (7/5): Good -
- Peter (10/5): Absolutely superb! A great place to stay in Kumamoto. - Brilliant! A lovely, beautifully decorated and extremely comfy hostel in Kumamoto (a little away from the centre, but a fairly short walk from multiple train stations). Lots of space, both in the rooms and in the common areas. You could really relax and enjoy a home away from home. Incredibly kind, friendly and helpful host, too. I wish every hostel/guesthouse were as amazing as this one! Nothing. It’s an amazing place.
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional - helpful friendly staff, rooms, amenities, bike rental, good bike, I felt like at home :))
- Alice (7/5): Good -
- Ting (9/5): Superb -
- Hui (8/5): Nice budget stay. - A very beautiful guest house especially the corridor on the ground floor by the garden. It's about 10-515mins walk from the train station along a river. Nice and quiet enough for me though there's the occasional sound of traffic. There's a big supermarket about 3mins walk away down the same block. The kitchen is heated too warm.
- Oliver (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is making the bamboo lights. The rooms are insane. She is super friendly. Lived it there.
- Chan (7/5): Good - Stay in 2nd floor japanese room.. nothing special. The Japanese room is not bright enough with only one lamp. Only one free face towel per day and free toiletries. Everything chargeable such as using of washing machine, tea etc
Water dispenser hot water is not hot in the morning, location is far away from station and local train stop, not recommend as surounging is dark and quiet while walk back to the hotel.
- Regina (10/5): Perfect trip to Kumamoto - Very good location , friendly staff and a nice kitchen area with water , coffee , and everything you need . The Tatatamis are very comfortable . I had good time there
- Robinson (7/5): Good -
- Leigh (9/5): Superb -
- Ariana (4/5): Disappointing - The staff is really nice and helpful! The beds are very wobbly and not comfortable. The whole hotel is very noisy and one can hear everything. If someone cooks in the kitchen, the smell goes up until the 2nd floor.
We stayed for a night and wouldn’t come again.
- Taka (9/5): Superb -
- Raphael (10/5): Best to stay in Kumamoto and enjoying traditional Japanese house style - It is a loveley traditional Japanese style house with much comfort. The staff is so nice, I had a great time with Yu. You sleep on classic Futon beds. Everything is nice and clean and you can really feel that the staff is caring about every detail.
- Sourav7 (9/5): Superb - The guest house is very clean, behaviour of the staff is very good. You will love to be there if you want to stay in a Japanese Tatami style atmosphere. There was some small insects roaming around tatami floor and also in my bed also. I think that might create some problem to others
- Chia-hui (10/5): wonderful - The guest house is comfortable and clean. The staff are very nice and helpful. I really enjoyed my stays here and would choose here again next time. None
- Linda (8/5): Good choice for solo trip - It’s a Japanese style house, pretty and clean. There are enough shower rooms and toilets. The location is a 15 minute walk distance from Kumamoto JR Station, when i walk with my luggage, i feel it’s a long way. But the view is good. The entrance of hostel is not obvious, be careful not to miss it on the first day.
- Soo (8/5): Very good -
- Nathapong (6/5): Pleasant -
- Nando (9/5): Lovely Japanese guest house - I had a great time at this Japanese-style guest house! The staff are super welcoming and friendly, and like to engage in chats with the guests. The location is great if you travel by public transport with Kumamoto station being close by. If I'm ever in Kumamoto again, I'd definitely stay again! Due to the thin walls it can get noisy, but luckily the hostel provides free earplugs (I'd recommend earplugs in shared hotels in general)
- Chin (9/5): A great option if your traveling light and like interacting with people! - Very cute guesthouse with a big kitchen and common area, tatami mats and futons to sleep on, and a super friendly, warm staff. The place is beautifully decorated with fresh cut flowers and cool hand made lanterns made out of bamboo stalks in the garden spaces which are fun to view at night.
It was a bit of a hot day when I stayed, and one staff member generously let me in early to hang out in the common area to rest and have a glass of water and some apple slices. With his intermediate level English and my terribly bad Japanese we had a lovely conversation about places we’ve traveled and our favorite foods. The guesthouse is a bit far from Kumamoto station or other fast or frequent public transit options. It’s in a quiet neighborhood area and requires about a 17 minute walk from Kumamoto Station. It’s a lovely walk along the canal, but if you have a lot of luggage, it could be arduous.
- Huang (10/5): Exceptional - The hostel guider is very nice. The rooms are very clean and the tatami bed is comfortable. Beautiful place! no
- Tanawan (8/5): Very good -
- Aram (9/5): Superb -
- Withiwas (10/5): Real Japanese-traditional vibe with very welcoming and humbled staffs. - Great experience to scent the Japanese Traditional style of hostel&Ryokan.
walking distance to great Onzen place.
very warm welcoming staffs & advice to explore Kumamoto a bit far by walk from Train Station (10-15 minutes) so it might be less comfy for those who have lots of luggage.
but this Japanese-style accommodation was definitely worth it.
- Kai (8/5): Very good - The atmosphere and guest house themselves were quaint and I loved the japanese style. The room was cold and it was hard to figure out how to use the AC unit with only Japanese remote controller. Maybe an instruction leaflet would have been nice. It worked after fiddling a bit but it was a bummer.
- Spencer (10/5): Kumamoto ! - Staff were so friendly, even with limited English we still managed to have great conversation - so welcoming and helpful ! Great food recommendations. Eri and Haruna, amazing hosts !
- Joel (7/5): Good -
- Chia (10/5): Exceptional - the staff is very kind and gives lots of help for my additional stay since most of the backpacker guest house were not available in the Saturday
