Guest Reviews
- Tara (8/5): - Great location. Loved it.
- Paul (10/5): - All great
- Ayren (10/5): - Nice room, though the common areas on the 2nd floor does not have proper AC, we were there in June and it was not too hot out, but very warm in the common room. Our room was great, clean, quiet, save for a bit of noise on the street. It was great to have a common kitchen to use and save money on eating out. The bathrooms are a bit small/cramped on our floor, so if you have mobility issues or are tall, you may have a bit of a tough time.
It was a quick walk to the waterfront and many different restaurants and shops. Public transportation access was easy and made it simple to get everywhere we wanted to go downtown. Would definitely recommend!
For anyone booking through expedia, make sure you pay attention to the check in details for confirmation codes, I had to contact support to find the correct code, as the codes are different for the Expedia confirmation code and the residence's code.
- Laurissa (8/5): - Great room for the location and price! Absolutely no one on-site or accessible when you reach out to the contact information (office never opened) to support anything, including access to laundry, which is advertised.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not family friendly. - Cons: Had so much difficulty with communication between the residence and the booking platform.. it was seemingly non existent. We were afraid we wouldn't be able to check in. It was nearly impossible to access the information that one party required from the other in order to recieve our door code. Make sure you sort this out well in advance to save yourself the stress.
On arrival, the whole second floor smelled like weed. I was visiting with my young daughter and it was pretty offensive for both of us, maybe expected for a university dorm experience (?), but not the comfort we had been looking for. We didnt use the kitchen facilities because we couldnt stand to be in the common areas without holding our breath.
Pros: It was pretty quiet, and the room was warm through the night but the fan helped. About what we were expecting for a more budget city accommodation, but maybe still pricey when you factor in no parking. If you were a solo traveler, it might be adequate but based on our experience I wouldnt recommend for families.
- Dylan (10/5): - Great place in downtown location
- Verified traveler (2/5): - GRANVILLE HALL DISCRIMINATES AGAINST MEN.
I was absolutely disgusted, upon arrival, to find that this residence has female bathrooms, and gender neutral bathrooms, but no male bathrooms. This is such an insult to men and it will take me years to recover from it.
- Keir (10/5): - Simple accommodations as described and as expected. Nice stat
- Robin (10/5): - Location and price
- Verified traveler (8/5): Okay after I got in - Very hard to check in on the machine. No one available during stated office hours. You need the hotel confirmation number to check in, and it wasn’t provided by hotels.com. I had to call them for it.
- andrew (6/5): Halifax Encounter - This was the first time I’ve stayed in a property of this type. No staff on property, community kitchen area & small rooms.
- Mark (10/5): - If you like to sleep on a soft mattresses then this is the place.
- Allegonda (10/5): - Everything went smoothly with the check-in, the room was adorable and clean, quiet environment. I was tired and went straight to bed, but there seemed to be lots of dining and entertainment around.
Close to Maritime Bus and even closer to airport bus.
- David (8/5): - Great convenient spot in downtown Halifax
- Michael (10/5): - Great value to be downtown Halifax. Rooms are clean and shared facilities are good. Keep in mind that rooms will lack things like irons, hair dryers etc… towels and extra sheets are available.
- Brian (8/5): - Location
- Jo-Anne (10/5): - I liked that it was a dorm and had plenty of private bathrooms, kitchens and a living room. Although the look of the brick wall is nice it is not comfortable to lean up against on the bed in 312.
- Ronda (8/5): - Clean and comfortable. Central to downtown Halifax.
- Michelle (10/5): - Great spot in downtown HFX. walkable and close to nightlife, restaurants, water. Very clean and quiet and contactless entry was super easy !
- Carl (10/5): - Limited parking options
- Parisa (10/5): - It was so clean and quiet and near harbour
- Juliet (8/5): - The building is very centrally located and the room itself was very nice, as was the kitchen area. Bathroom also very convenient and clean. However, a couple of points:
1) There is no customer service, despite a notice on the office door saying staff will be there 10-4 on weekdays. I wanted a couple of things - to borrow a hairdryer, and to see if I could leave my suitcase for a few hours on the last day. But there was no one to ask. I emailed the address on my booking confirmation, but never received a reply. I was reluctant to phone as it would have counted as a call from the UK on my cellphone plan. If there are no onsite staff during summer holidays, you need to take down the notice saying that there are. And if staff don't answer emails, remove the email address from the booking confirmation. But relying on a mobile phone number alone is in my view not adequate.
2) The room was quite noisy, due to construction work going on directly outside. But presumably this is a temporary problem.
3) Another visitor was also looking for a hairdryer. I think this is definitely something Granville Hall should provide. Perhaps build it into the wall of the bathroom, as many hotels do.
4) In the end, I had to pay a completely separate business to hold my luggage for a few hours - an extra cost which would probably have been avoidable if I'd been able to speak to someone. Not ideal.
- Xiaolei (4/5): - We stayed at this property for one night, we travel a lot and no sleeping issues before. But last night we had very bad experience, first of all the top windows no curtains at all, no privacy and too bright in the early morning when you still want to sleep. Secondly, all night is so noisy. We didn’t sleep all night long! Our room number is 201, Other than these two issues, everything else is ok. The property is reasonable clean and well maintained. all the process are smooth as well.
- steve (4/5): - For some reason it was impossible to get the wifi password. Many emails and no password. Very frustrating never again, they wasted my time.
- Hirdesh (6/5): - Floor boards in the washroom seemed to be damaged. Everything was a compact sort of like an RV. Service desk closes very soon so don't have any issues after 16:30.
- Tracy (10/5): - Convenient location at a reasonable price.
- Roxan (8/5): Great for price, not so much for comfort - Great location. Room was a bit tight and desk a bit big for the size of the room. AC was broken and it was crazy hot.
- T (10/5): - Great location
- Jada (10/5): - Rooms were tidy, the upstairs was warm but were given a large fan to cool the room.
- Zoriana (10/5): - The room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. Easy access.
- Bruno (6/5): - Tres bien situer au centre-ville ,pas besoin de l'auto.
- Chandler (10/5): - Very clean, tidy and perfect location. Would definitely stay here again.
- Amanda (6/5): - The "laundry" amenity really should not be listed for this property when advertised for hotel-like stays. If you are only staying here short-term, you will not actually be able to use the laundry, as it requires a proprietary "laundry card," which you can only purchase from a human in the office...the problem with that is no one appears to actually be in the office at this property. Posted office hours are 10-4, but checking multiple times over a two-day stay, I never saw a single person during that time period. Also, parking in the area is fairly expensive ($32 for a single overnight at a nearby garage), so if you are travelling by car, you are may not be saving any money here compared to a hotel with its own garage in the area.
- Samantha (8/5): - I liked that the rooms were very clean and in a good neighbourhood of Halifax. (Central to everything). I disliked how hard the beds were and how you need to be very tech savvy to access the hotel.
- Jill (10/5): - Loved the property - clean, centrally located, cool spot. Check on was very frustrating. It was a self serve check in but the confirmation number given by Expedia wasn’t for the hotel but for Expedia. The proper confirmation number should have been easily displayed in the email. We had to call Expedia and were only able to speak with an AI agent who wasn’t very helpful. It took over 30 minutes to check in when it should have been a minute or two and the process was very frustrating. Love the spot but the check in process needs to be fixed by simply communicating the process clearly in the email from Expedia.
- Yuchen (4/5): - Pros:
- Cheap price in the area
- Clean and well maintained bathrooms (though one of the taps only flows hot water)
- Good shared amenities
- Friendly residents
Cons:
- My room has bad ventilation. Strong odor goes out from the walls and the window could not be opened.
- The bed isn't comfortable. It squeaks and accumulates body heat at night so I got a very shallow sleep.
- Thin walls that don't isolate noise
- The self-checkin process is confusing. It takes a while to figure out the door lock. Also the website claims the checkout time to be 8am, 3 hours earlier from what's on Expedia. Apparently, most residents stayed pass 8am anyways, but I was worried that I might get kicked out anytime after 8.
- Marc (8/5): - Great location and can't beat price, It is a dorm room, with shared bathrooms and shower, clean and easy check in. Would stay again.
- yaffa (4/5): - No elevator, no coffee or tea, no staff on site, no air conditioning in the rooms, very tiny rooms, no tv,
- shuyi (10/5): - Great location, quiet place, recommend it!
- Natasha (8/5): - It was adequate for the price range. Room was very hot though, but it was also during a heat wave. Great shared facilities.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great - Really good quality for price. Super Localisation. Really modest rooms, but for the price, it's perfect. Clean.
- Haidee (10/5): - Great for solo, female travellers. Clean shared bathroom and kitchen, small but comfy single rooms and within walking distance to everything! Great food choices around, short walk to the boardwalk. This inn is commute-friendly too as bus stops are nearby, and easy to grab taxi, uber.
- Neeraj (10/5): - Excellent location. Easy digital access. Clean room.
- janet (10/5): - Very clean
- Gary (8/5): - Convenient location downtown. Online check-in, and combination codes worked well. Room was quieter than we had thought it would be. Everything seemed clean. A small repair was necessary in the bathroom. ..and there was nowhere at all to lay down any objects in there, such as shave kit, which was a little inconvenient. But otherwise good.
- Lisa (8/5): - Great property , very clean and safe. Close to waterfront , easy to get to and from YHZ
- Merida (8/5): - The area is safe and relatively closed to the waterfront. The rooms are clean and comfortable. I enjoyed my stay and recommend for a short or long stay.
- Ijade (6/5): - Good value for what you pay. It is close to the waterfront.
- Edward (10/5): - Great place to stay, great value.
- Peter (10/5): - Very well managed
Simple but Clean - awesome location!
- Larissa (10/5): - Excellent location close to everything downtown! Clean property, clean bathroom, clean room. No complaints other than could hear everything through the walls and floor.
- Helen (10/5): - Great location, exceptionally clean, great amenities and except for friendly houseworkers completely staff less.
Works well 👍
- Patisha (10/5): - My stay at Granville Hall was exactly what I wanted — a clean, quiet place near the waterfront! The staff were friendly, and the property was well managed and clean. I walked around easily to parks, museums, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. Transit is also available nearby (I took a bus to and from the airport — with a short walk to Granville Hall.) Great for solo travellers!
- Matthew (10/5): - Easy access to downtown and very quiet in the summer as it’s the break for students. This place is as advertised ! Perfect for a solo traveller needing a quiet place to crash with all the amenities.
- Helen (8/5): - Very close to waterfront, comfortable and very clean! But not homely which is no problem if you don’t mind.
- Shannon (8/5): - Good setup with kitchens on each floor. Nice central location.
- wallace (8/5): - Location was ideal. 2, 3 blocks from waterfront, and also eating places. Kitchen was nice to be available.
- Chris (8/5): - Good but ...
Let's start with the pros. It's a student residence and as long as you understand that when you book, you will know what to expect. The rooms are well furnished with a comfortable bed, a mini-fridge and a desk and wardrobe. The shared bathrooms are clean and well-functioning. Each floor is also equipped with a kitchen. The location is perfect and you are in the literal center of Halifax with many attractions just a short walking distance.
However, there are cons. There are no staff on site at all, aside from the cleaning people who come in the morning. There is an office at the entrance with posted hours but no one was ever there during my 5-day stay. I could only communicate via text message with a support line, which I needed to do so upon arrival, as the codes they gave me did not work and it took nearly 40 minutes before it was resolved. Apparently, non-working codes are a regular thing, as they have a sign on the door with instructions in the event it happens, but which begs the question, if so many people have issues with codes, why can't they fix their own system? As well, their support staff have very poor public relation skills and tend to not respond if you ask them a question they don't know the answer to, nor do they offer apologies for any inconveniences.
However, despite these cons, the stay was still comfortable.
- Suza (10/5): - Excellent location with very clean kitchen
Self check-in easy
Free parking outside on weekends
- PATRICIA (10/5): - Clean, affordable and very comfortable with a nice kitchen available for use. Near to a shopping centre and a short walk to the waterfront or Citadel. Mostly very quiet until the last night when construction workers decided to start early in the morning to dig up the sidewalk across the street.
- Alexandra (10/5): - Felt safe. Nice to have a kitchen and lounge. Nice that it was closed to outsiders because of the code to get in.
Property manager and cleaning staff were very nice.
Convenient that luggage could be left in the lounge after checkout.
Comfortable bed.
Good price in a great location.
I would go back
- Daljit (6/5): - Moderate
- Cassidy (10/5): - great location, easy check in and a great price.
- Felix (8/5): - Good affordable option for Halifax waterfront area. Good for solo traveler
- Darlene (8/5): - There was a lot of construction next to the property which made it very noisy.
Accessing the building was a challenge as it didn't work the first time we tried. We texted someone and they were very helpful so we eventually got it right. The room we had was lovely and roomy. The beds were very comfortable, bathrooms, kitchen and dining area were very clean. We have no complaints about the place. It was very convenient to get to the boardwalk and restaurants in the area. Would recommend and would probably stay again next time in Halifax.
- Alireza (10/5): - Quiet and friendly
- Shae (10/5): - Great location!
- Jennifer (8/5): - The location is inbeatable -- central but quiet.
- tim (8/5): - There is no lift so if you have trouble walking its not for you...room had 1970 green shag carpet. Small rooms but clean..only a fan . But keep in mind its a student residence and inexpensive.
- Brenda (10/5): - Quaint
- Randall (2/5): - No ac no front desk all crazy internet check in
- Alexa (2/5): - Very disappointing. The room and especially the sheets smelled of chemicals/bleach very strongly. Both me and my guest had sore throats(and still do), headaches during the length of our stay, and were up both nights sneezing blowing our noses and coughing. I’ve never had allergies before and I equate this to the strong chemical smell in our room. We even tried turning both fans on and leaving the windows open after the second night but it didn’t help.
Also both washrooms on the second floor smelled strongly of urine consistently.
I had a former student recommend staying here after having a good experience and I’m disappointed to say that we didn’t experience the same.
- Véronique (10/5): - Première fois en résidence universitaire. Ce sera à refaire. Nous avons apprécié la simplicité!
- Rebecca (10/5): - Great location, clean rooms with easy safe access for guest and very clean shared washroom and kitchen probably cleaner than a hotel washroom
- Jialin (10/5): - it is very clean, fast internet
- Pavan (10/5): - Wonderful place or bachelors and solo traveler’s. Neat and clean bathrooms and bedrooms. Love to visit again.
- Leanne (8/5): - It's a dorm, but it was quiet and clean. You have to take care of your own stuff, but I loved the location and would definitely stay there again.
- Dave (10/5): - Best to check in online before you get there. The self service terminal was a real pain.
- Renée (8/5): - Being so close to water was great.and it was clean and friendly
- Mary (8/5): - Just improve on the linen (bedding)
- Kathleen (8/5): - Excellent location if you're attending the conference centre. Self check in was a breeze. I was worried about the shared bathrooms being all occupied in the morning at shower time - no problem. The nicest bathroom is on the first floor.
The only real problem was the noise outside - brutal! There is a constant flow of garbage trucks in the morning across the street plus a major construction project right next door that has construction noise from the crack of dawn. The jackhammering and other loud noise is a real negative.
- Annina (10/5): - We had a great time! The staff were friendly and courteous. We were able to leave our bags in their lounge after check-out and found lots of things to do within walking distance.
- Raphaële (10/5): - Great location with easy check in!
- Nancy (6/5): - My sister & I stayed on the main floor in single rooms, they were small but adequate. One room had a bar fridge & the other was much smaller & claustrophobic. Residence was as advertised; well stocked kitchen. Great location. I would have appreciated some “residence etiquette” information posted on sight (as some of the lockers associated with our rooms were occupied).
- Dianne (8/5): - Spacious room, comfortable beds and other residents werequiet and friendly
- Arun (2/5): - Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory due to several issues:
1. Cleanliness: The room and common areas were not clean upon arrival and during the stay.
2. Maintenance: Several facilities were either broken or not functioning properly, such as the bed is not at all clean and its too noisy
3. Noise Levels: Excessive noise throughout the night made it impossible to get a good night’s
Given the numerous issues that significantly impacted the quality of my stay
- Wayne (10/5): - Clean and location is great
- Julie (10/5): - Felt very safe and secure. Was travelling by myself. Took getting use to bathroom being shared cause I'm use to hotels. Common areas really clean and other guest were very respectful of each other. Room was smaller than expected but i only needed a place to sleep. Very walkable to points of interest within the city. Wish i would have known halifax is on a hill but i would rather a walk uphill to my conference in the morning than a walk uphill back to my hotel. Would highly recommend for anyone that wants to explore the waterfront and not pay an arm and a leg on a hotel.
- Muskan (10/5): - It was clean and safe.
- Bora (6/5): - It met expectations and I had a nice stay. Check in could have been easier. You have to contact Expedia support to get your confirmation number which is required for check in. However this number is not provided directly upon booking. Secondly the shared bathrooms were very clean, however the rooms were not that clean. There were hairs from the previous guests around.
- Eric (10/5): - Online check-in was easy. Email communication was excellent. No issues with access to residence. Loved the small cozy room, it did the job for the night (zzzz). Would consider again if I go back to Halifax.
- James (8/5): - Construction around property was noisy. This will be for a limited time.
Also no where to store luggage safely while waiting for 3pm check in time
Secure doors were often open during cleaning making it unsafe to store luggage for several hours
- ROD (6/5): - Great location
Room is quite small for a couple
Sound proofing could be better
Good and clean kitchen space
- Anthea (6/5): - An ok stay. Room quite tiny but separate kitchen facilities. They said there was a laundry but it needed special card which was not available. Because everything is automated therecwere never staff around to ask for help. Also problems with payment. The system was on the blink but nothing to say so until we phoned - not easy on a foreign phone. Sometimes technology is not the way forward!
- Jessica (10/5): - We didn't have any towels on the second night of our stay and asked someone where can we get some more.
They pretty much said that on the weekends, it's fend for yourselves as there's no organization/no weekend staff.
Maybe a good idea to get more employees or up the organization on weekends.
Apart from that it was really nice, cozy, quiet and we felt safe. We'll definitely try to book again when we come back to Nova Scotia
- Mathew (6/5): - Good location - walkable to everything you need. The duvet was quite dirty and it would be good if basic toiletries (ie soap) was provided.
- Justin (4/5): - When booking on Expedia was very unclear that this is actually a student residence shared bathrooms, and nothing in the room, except the bed in the lamp. Description Expedia sounds more like a hotel rather than a single room residence with shared amenities
- Richard (10/5): - The passcode system was glitchy to enter the building when we first arrived. There was no one in the office, so text messaging had to be used. That incurred a long wait and we weren't sure if were getting in. Those issues could attributed to the fact we online reserved the afternoon before, less than 24 hours. There was construction on Granville adjacent to the building. We were out all day so that didn't bother us.
- Sofie (10/5): - Great place to stay if you want to explore the city and just have a place to crash. The rooms are tiny.
