Guest Reviews
- Melanie (4/5): - Not having an ensuite, dirty dishes left out, jugs of water not filled everyday, limited breakfast cereals, no sink to be able to empty dishes, cups into.
- Helen (8/5): - This historic home was a pleasure to stay in. It was like stepping back in time. We shared the bathroom with one other couple, whom we never saw.
We had the music room, which was at the front of the property. There is a railway not far away and we were a little concerned about the noise however once evening came the train noise was greatly reduced and we didn't hear them again until morning.
There is a restaurant downstairs, we didn't have time to try it out. That went quiet by 10pm so no noise from there.
The bed was super comfortable as were the pillows.
The location is great, close to train station, shops and pub.
Breakfast was a 'help yourself' continental and had a good choice of cereals. There were juices, bread to make toast and some pastries and tea and coffee.
Would we stay again ... yes we will. We've already booked our next stay!
- Garry (6/5): - OMG the trains were non stop during the night and a bathroom not shared would’ve been better.
- Sue (8/5): - Really enjoyed a relaxing overnight stay at Victoria House. And Eileen was a charming thoughtful host.
- Joanne (8/5): - A charming and delightful old character venue, with friendly and kind staff. Easy access with dinner at the venue or pub across the road. Great!
- Steve (4/5): - Not clean! My room was full of bugs and mosquitos!! Had to spray the room. Very run down, lives up to its name as OLD VICTORIA HOTEL. The owner is a lovely lady but the place needs a lot of work.
- Leonie (10/5): - Lovely accomodation old worldly gorgeous
- Chrystal (10/5): - Thanks Eileen for a lovely comfortable stay. An amazing historic property beautifully appointed and very clean. The food from downstairs was the icing on the cake. I'll be back.
- John (10/5): Olde Worlde charm!! - A great olde worlde charm!! Peaceful, beautiful antique / vintage furnishings. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay
- Geoffrey (10/5): - We had a historical adventure in this 1837 house with period furniture, lots of space, generous provisions in the bathroom and breakfast lounge, and good heating to keep it cozy in winter. I even enjoyed some old books that I remembered from my childhood. One of the two oldest buildings in Maitland it's well worth booking a stay. We were even allowed to charge our electric car which was appreciated.
- Bronwyn (6/5): - The Old Victoria is a beautiful building. It is a grand old dame. Apparently it is one of the oldest homes in Maitland. It is definitely not in its hay day but it there is a sense of comfort and homeliness to the place. It could do with a bit of a clean up in spots but was a comfortable place to stay for one night. Be aware that the train line is across the road from The Old Victoria. Train noise does not worry me but if it is an issue for you you may want to look elsewhere. In saying that we were in a back room so the noise was somewhat muffled. The breakfast is basic. Our room ( Poets Room) had a nice charm and theme without over doing it. I would definitely stay here again if passing through the area.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Great service feels very homey
- Kyi (10/5): - Beautiful antique Hotel
- Suzanne (10/5): - The Old Vic was a delightful change from homogeneous and boring accommodations. It was a little like staying at your grandmother’s place. Full of interesting antiques, a comfy bed with a snug classic quilt,
Our hostess Eileen was such fun, with lots of interesting conversation and quirky insights.
A lovely relaxed atmosphere with everything we needed.
If you like something a little different, enjoy the Old Vic.
- Scott (10/5): - Nice place to stay
- Claudia (8/5): - Thoroughly enjoyed the quiet and being transported back in the early 1830’s with amazing interiors. Great condition, will definitely stay again.
- Karen (8/5): - loved the old building and its antiques
Easy and comfortable
- Ryan (8/5): - Great property to stay at if you like a vintage appeal. Restaurant downstairs is a must do if you stay there. Rooms were lovely and definitely gave a Victorian vibe. I think the mattress for the bed should be changed as the springs appeared to be shot. Host (Eileen) was great, and provided a nice history of the property. While there is train noise evident if you open the windows, I took that as part of the building's charm.
- Saskia (10/5): - Excellent and staff very accommodating. The only reason I can’t give all 5’s is because I didn’t get a chance to investigate the rest of the property and surrounding area.
- Chris (2/5): - A lovely old home with lots of character ie squeaky floor boards & staircase. Clean & tidy. Comfy bed. Shared bath.
The noise from the train overnight was not tolerable. Smelly bins from the restaurant downstairs were very unappealing. The old saying - too good to be true. Sorry
- Darragh (10/5): - Lovely heritage house that has been maintained extremely well. Really felt like I was stepping back in time without compromising on cleanliness or comfort.
- Vivek (6/5): - It was a 5 night stay during Christmas.
The property is old and gets scary at night.
There was no staff, the owner was available for limited things.
No towels in room, pick any from bathroom. No instructions on where to keep used utensils or towels.
Bins were not taken out throughout my stay.
Lots of cockroaches almost everywhere.
Continental breakfast is - Self prepared Toast, Tea, coffee, juice etc.
No aircon, the fan was pretty useless. I had to place it right on my face to get some air.
The price looks high if I compare it with actual hotels with shared bath and better services.
I am not booking this property again.
- Sue (8/5): Old charm - We love the old charm still preserved it was great
- Christopher (8/5): Despite a few problems I really enjoyed the stay. - Easy to find using GPS. Easy to deal with owner. Good rundown on where things were, history etc.
Bad point was the cockroaches. Pulled pillow up and big cockie. In the kitchen area put jug and toaster on and masses of young cockies run out.
Good breakfast supplies.
Some may complain about trains my only thoughts are how silly we sell our energy so cheap to 3rd world countries then we are asked not to rum AC etc. parking was tight and only on the street. Club about 700m around the corner with 3 restaurants. No AC but windows open and fans in each room. Be good when the verandah is replaced and you could sit out in the fresh air. Even a bottle of wine and port I assume available for guests to use?
- Dave (10/5): - Exactly as described. Very well presented.
Extremely comfortable stay.
Thank you Eileen
We will be back soon:)
Kindest Regards
Dave&Clare
- Liz (10/5): - Heritage building with really unique interior.we liked it as it wasn't your" run of the mill" stay. All the rooms were very different full of interesting items and decorations. Having an excellent restaurant down stairs was an added bonus.
Eileen the host was welcoming and helpful.
Great value for money.
- Madeline (8/5): - I only needed one nights accommodation, so it suited me. The train line was a bit noisy through the night, but overall everything was great.
- SANDRA (10/5): - Lovely friendly service. Beautiful property.
- Peter (10/5): - Nice place to stay
- Debbie (10/5): - I absolutely feel I love with originality of the whole property. I will be staying there again in the future.
- Timothy (10/5): - If you like grand old 19th century houses, this is affordable and lovely.
- Sarina (8/5): - The history of the building and all the antique furniture was beautiful. The bathroom and water pressure in shower was excellent. The 4 poster bed was gorgeous but not very comfortable. It was too soft. And the pull out sofa bed was very uncomfortable. I could feel all the metal framing. The breakfast options were adequate but they only had white bread which does not suit a gluten free or health conscious guest. The restaurant downstairs was superb.
- Tracey (10/5): - It's age and quirkiness. I would stay there again.
- Kathleen (6/5): - Unique and heritage. No safe off street parking and too many stairs for those who have mobility issues. Grateful that they do allow pets. Better signage out front would help as I couldn't find a sign indicating it was the old victorian. Great restaurant on site.
- Valarie (10/5): - Loved that this facility had the ambience of a stately home where we were welcome guests, and not just a slick hotel for a convenient quick stay.
- Kirstin (10/5): - I had to be in town for a big family wedding and decided to treat myself wiht a stay in the Alfred room. Eileen was great with check in, and showed me around and left me to my online meeting and to enjoy my stay. It's a lovely large room and I appreciated the little table and chairs by the window and the luxury of the big bathroom to myself to get ready. I ate at Dukes, and left for the wedding and it was a lovely stay.
- Carol (10/5): - the place is beautiful, safe, and great value for money and has an old world charm effect love it
will definitely come back
- CHRIS (4/5): - The host was friendly and accommodating. Everything else was disappointing. Continual noise from the coal trains, drunk falling over several times and waking us at 2am, dust and dirt on floors, dust in rooms, poor breakfast.
- Suzanne (10/5): Exceptional - Exceptional. We loved it. Eileen is a lovely lady.
- Susie (8/5): - Eileen was a pleasure to deal with and very knowledgeable about the building.
- Tristan (10/5): - Beautiful old property
- Rafael (2/5): - Like parking.
- Nigel (10/5): - Great venue and great staff
- joanne (10/5): - Loved the old world charm, had a great vibe, lovely to come back on a winters night and it was warm and cosy, slept well, love all rhe added extras to make an enjoyable stay, will be back
- Roy (10/5): Charming Old World Experience - Friendly welcome on arrival. Charming old world 1837
hotel B&B in East Maitland about 5 minutes from town centre. Comfy bed in large room with with plenty of space. 5 rooms and two large shared bathrooms with copious supplies of towels and hair and body care products. Basic self serve breakfast in shared sitting room.
Not being a big fan of instant coffee, I would stay there again and take my own coffee plunger!
- Rebecca (10/5): - Fantastic if you’ve got dogs. We really enjoyed the sitting room too; it was very cosy. There is a steep staircase though up to the bedrooms. It tired the dogs out so that was a plus.
- Nigel (10/5): - Thankyou and great venue
- Stephanie (8/5): - Great experience. Loved the bath. The dinner down stairs in the restaurant was expensive but worth it, yum!
- Richard (4/5): - Didn’t like the fact we couldn’t get a table or at least room service from the restaurant despite having a room upstairs, instead we had to go across the road and come back and walk through the dining area to get to our room. We also were told we were the only people staying and then at 2am we had people roaming around upstairs, slamming doors and left the tap running in the bathroom. Overall very disappointing considering we got told we would be the only people there only to be woken by someone at 2am so not knowing if someone broke in etc was a little uncomfortable
- Dawn (10/5): - The 2 nights we stayed was really lovely.. The building is old but that was its charm. We were made very welcome owner went out of her way to make our stay a memorable one. We vertully had the run of the top floor. It might not suit some people who want all modcons its old fashioned, large rooms, antiques, chandeliers if you are into that then this is a great place to go too. We will be back there in september.
- Justin (10/5): - Great stay, host was lovely and very welcoming.
- Cherry Ann (10/5): Excellent and Timeless - Eileen, the owner, was very warm and friendly. She made sure we have a comfortable stay. The hotel is very clean, classic and we love the fact that they were able to preserve a heritage building. We’ll definitely come back there.
- Nadine (8/5): - unique I had the place to myself so i did not need to worry about share bathroom.
TV in room could be good if sharing but common room very nice
- Susan (10/5): - Well decorated, furnished and themed to the age of the building. Very friendly and helpful staff.
- Val (8/5): - This Hotel is exactly as shown in its pictures. A Beautifully restored building with well appointed rooms paying homage to its heritage. There is a lovely comfortable lounge room packed with memorabilia as well as provisions for tea/coffee, breakfast etc.
We were in the Music Room which is smallish but all we needed for an overnight stay. Only problem was that we needed the windows open for the breeze and there are no fly screens so mozzies were a problem. Also, be aware that it is close to the railway line and freight trains run all night long. Probably not a problem in winter when all the windows don't need to be open. There are rooms at the back of the property which would likely be quieter.
- samantha (8/5): - Charming old property. It will be particularly nice once the veranda is open again. Lovely courtyard downstairs and the restaurant looks great. Staff very friendly.
- Raymond (8/5): - The historic aspect of the property was outstanding.
Eileen was extremely friendly and helpful.
Very high quality restaurant on site.
- Stephen (8/5): - The staff were great, Exceptional Restaurant food was fantastic.
The only negative was we had a shared bathroom with 1 other room, not a real issue at all.
- Geoff (4/5): - No airconditioning
- Patricia (10/5): - Amazing and at an amazing price given its magnificence! Well located- a walk to coffee shops
- Sara (10/5): - Great character, Eileen was very helpful with check in.
- Jo-ann (8/5): - I loved the fact it was a heritage listed place. The old building was beautiful and well looked after.
- John (8/5): - A lovely step back into time with beautiful decor and period furnishings. The building has some maintenance issues but overall it's very good value for money.
The experience is somewhat compromised however by its proximity to the main north south rail line with heavy traffic all night long which doesn't lead to a restful sleep!
- JOHN (2/5): Trains trains and more trains - Coal trains ran all night very noisy no sleep shared bathroom no air con creaky door boards hear every step
Bed was poor room was small nothing like photos
- John (10/5): - We totally loved our stay in this 1830s property with original features which were so fascinating. Breakfast was a thoughtful touch and our bed was comfortable. My 8 year old said he slept solidly and when he woke felt like he was in his own room in his own bed. It does feel like a familiar 'home away from home'
- Brent (8/5): - The power board didnt work in the room, so we could not charge phones and watches plus not able to use CPAP machine.
- Monique (4/5): - Unfortunately I did not get to stay the night. After booking through Wotif and receiving my confirmation email I arrived on my due date to find there was no reservation for me. Apparently this had happened to 3 families the weekend before. Eileen was very sweet and apologetic. There also was no other accommodation left around town. Not happy at all. I suggest not using a third party for booking if this has happened more then once.
- Liisa (10/5): - The charm and character of the property was fantastic The location was an enjoyable leisurely walk to great antique shop and sights .Food at the club across the road was great. To top off our stay Eileen was a treasure just like her home
- Phillip (8/5): - Property is in great position close to rail station. It is clean with good breakfast facilities and good dining options at night.
- Andrew (6/5): - bathroom door faulty, got locked in. Would be much better if the top veranda got repaired and was useable
- Jason (10/5): - Eileen was awesome. She was very helpful and extremely engaging. There was nothing she could not do for us to make sure we were accommodated for.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the restaurant food was amazing - it was brought to our room at no extra cost.
Everyone was so nice. We had the best nights sleep and so did our little dog.
Fantastic, nostalgic and fun - thank you all.
Kindest regards
Jason and Jane
- Paul (10/5): - Wonderful history. Great location. Superb restaurant.
- Catherine (8/5): - Made to feel so welcome and at home. Thank you
- Tracy (10/5): - So welcoming even though we were early
- Jan (10/5): - The historic side of the stay was great. I loved the way the owner had done up the builing as authentically as he could.
- James (6/5): - Old world charm good value, however a little disorganised the staff,
- Robert (8/5): - The Old Victoria was nice to stay at, and Eileen was very helpful.
The location near the train line means train noise in the morning; but the room was comfortable, and the place was easy to find - quite convenient to the main roadssouth to Newcastle and Sydney
- Peter (10/5): - All good
- Graeme (10/5): - Had a very pleasant 2 nights there. It is near a train line but slept through that. Ameniable host and downstairs restaurant and bar was good and friendly. I would book again.
- Jackie (10/5): - My mum and I had a wonderful stay at The Old Victoria in Maitland. The establishment was true to its heritage and every detail was so well executed and beautiful. My visit is one I will always remember and I will making regular visits back. Thank you again Eileen for your incredible hospitality, I cant wait to come back.
I will be recommending this place to everyone I know.
- Teresa (6/5): - It was a great location, and very convenient for us. The restaurant and staff were exceptional. The fireplace set the ambience perfectly.
You may need to look in getting new mattresses. Our mattress was terrible to sleep on.
- Fiona (10/5): - Jimmy was very helpful and friendly. Small but lovely room. The bed is much smaller than standard double so be aware that your feet may stick out if you are tall. Shared bathroom was basic but ok.
- Mark (10/5): - Loved the charm and character of this property. The landlady was extremely friendly and we would definitely stay again
- Brett (10/5): - This property was unique. Old world charm, the staff were friendly. Awesome restaurant down stairs. Will definitely stay there again one day.
- Pamela (10/5): - Amazing place to stay…. My only qualm was that there was absolutely No Signage to say this was the Old Victorian Hotel!!!! I had to wait in the freezing cold for someone to answer the phone to let us in. There was signage for a restaurant which I never saw BUT a tiny little whiteboard at the front door saying “Ring Jimmy for accommodation “ with a mobile number. Suggest they do something about a sign.
- Philip (10/5): - Great people. Fantastic food in the restaurant. Don’t expect the run of the mill hotel room!!
- Bruce (10/5): - A very classy period apartment, well renovated and appointed with very large rooms including a lounge room, and lots of extras. Beautiful woodwork, antiques and a working Edison phonogram. Most unusual and romantic.
TV antenna needed attention, and a more modern mattress base would have been welcome on the old brass bed.
- Abraham (4/5): Noisy and disappointing - We booked the Victoria due to it having an option for a dog being pet friendly.
Upon arriving, we were told that we had to pay $20 to have the dog stay although there was nothing of this stated in the booking. The reason was for cleaning, and in essence we have no problem with this, however when the room we stayed in was pathetically dirty, then we have an issue.
The hotel is located directly opposite a busy pub and also the coal train line so the noise was as if a train is directly in your room all night.
The living room was ok, but a whole family booked the other rooms and left no space for us.
Disappointed and would not recommend.
- John (10/5): - Great restoration. Victorian elegance with modern convenience
- Graeme (8/5): Best history stay in Maitland - Fantastic glimps into past reality. 2nd house built in Maitland c1835 and shows how it really was. U/stairs bathooms is an add on that needs a biog makeover. You can see its a priovately owned labour of love that would cost $M's to update fully. If you love history and can put up with a few of the old inconvieniences this is a must. The best restaurant in Maitland is in the building and after the food & wine you are back nearly 200 years. We will make this a regular.
- Vijay (8/5): - Very old joint . Shower and hot water useless. Pet friendly but nothing in the premises to keep the dog. Parking on the street .
Location is very convenient. Won’t stay here again . Very dinghy and creeky. Not for us.
Shared bathroom . The worst. You must tell us this when advertising. Not happy. Bay cheap eaither. Breakfast advertised was a joke really
- Michael (2/5): - Unsafe stairs leading to front door with no lights. Room door jams and you have to slam it shut. toilet door lock is lose. Only one toilet and shower for several rooms. Booked 2 nights only stayed one.
- Chloe (10/5): - Beautiful building with great historic features
- Lee (10/5): - Old world rooms
- Penni (6/5): - This historic building is fascinating and charming with respect shown to original features.
However, the bed needs seriously updating. The plug for the clawfoot bath was missing so we couldn’t have a bath. Other visitors were also allowed to bring a dog inside. This caused some inconvenience.
- Sharon (4/5): - Booked for 3 only one bed made had to help make other bed room dusty everywhere showers cold after 2 minutes in shower person had smokers breath yuk
- Kristy (10/5): - The property is beautiful while set in the 1800s with its history! The owners are so wonderful and we have enjoyed our stay every time we have been here! Definitely will be coming back to stay again and enjoy this wonderful gem!
- deanna (10/5): - Enjoyed stepping back in time all the antiques
- Trudy (6/5): - It was very nicely furnished
- Christina (6/5): A little too old! - I usually love staying in properties that have character, but this stay was a little odd. I booked The Victoria Room which was at the front of the accommodation. A little more expensive, but it was a larger room and I was travelling with my small dogs. I received a text message a couple of hours before arrival to see when I would be arriving. All good. On arrival the place was locked up and I was about to call the number on the door, when it opened. I was greeted by a young man who showed me up to my room on very rickety stairs. I think the only thing holding them together is the carpet. On the right was the shared bathroom 😬 and on he left my room and again on the right the sitting room. The key to my room was in the door and handed to me then he young man disappeared back down stairs never to be seen again. I was apparently the only person staying that particular night. That was a bit creepy. Anyway the room was extremely hot but the fan didn’t work. There were no screens on the windows, but in the end I had to close them because of the frequent loud train noise and noise from the pub across the road. Quite an uncomfortable night for sleeping as a result. In addition, the bathroom had cockroaches running across the floor. I think a little maintenance is needed to make this place a bit more comfortable.
