Guest Reviews
- Catherine (10/5): -
- Chris (8/5): Quaint, well located, traditional pub guesthouse - Great room, great location. Boutique rooms. Breakfast option was excellent. Foul smell from the bathroom in one of the rooms. Staff helpful yet a little standoffish but that may please some.
- Diane (10/5): Perfect location attentive staff lovely food - Beautifully decorated comfortable bed close to underground lovely food
- john (6/5): Could be great... - Great room, very comfortable. Good quality bed linen other nice touches. Indifferent staff. Not sure if this is because they are bar staff first and foremost, but a combination of lack of experience and customer attention meant that the service experience did not match the standard of the room itself. After 3 nights I would have hoped to be asked how our stay was, but check out was like taking your empty glass back to the bar on your way out.
The experience was the same in the bar. It looks a great pub, but it just feels lacking. Not helped either when you have a member of staff / manager who berated his junior staff member, at length, right beside customers, both drinkers and diners. Very awkward and unpleasant. It might also explain why this historic looking pub was pretty dismal.
During our stay we coincidentally had lunch at another Young's establishment, the Coach and Horses in Kew. What a difference. Staff there were excellent.
Lastly; it might not affect others but the very effective air conditioning/ heating system does a grand job. However no matter what setting you use, it seems impossible to stop the interminable thrum that was not overly noticeable at first but was driving me demented by the third night. Maybe it wasn't the a/c but something else. Whatever it was it was constant.
- Susan (6/5): - Nicely furnished room The layout of the room was awkward and there was no view from the window.
We specified that it was for a birthday but there were no thoughtful touches which was a shame given the expensive room.
- Charlotte (10/5): Fantastic stay - would recommend the suite! - The location was brilliant - so easy to get around central London. The staff were really friendly - I wish we'd had chance to pop down to the pub for a drink but I was running the London Marathon so it was a super busy weeekend! The suite was really spacious and quiet - we slept really well and didn't have any downstairs or street noise as the suite is away from the road. The bath was luxurious! The room was really well decorated and the king size bed was super comfy! The overhead shower didn't seem to work and the handheld didn't have a lot of pressure to it, though I completely appreciate with an older building, the plumbing might not be very easy to upgrade!
- STEPHEN JOHN (5/5): - Nice location
Quite surroundings
Easy ride access Could do with a FACE LIFT
in bar area.
- Nikola (10/5): -
- Darryn (10/5): Fantastic location, staff and rooms. - The location was great and for an old pub the rooms where spacious and clean. I would definitely stay here again.
- Laban (10/5): -

- Lewis (6/5): -
- Kerry (9/5): -
- Suzy (8/5): Fun stay, quirky/comfortable room, staff lovely! - Good location Both bathroom taps dripped into the metal basins all night - I had to put a towel in one!
- JOHN (7/5): - Properly stocked minibar and room facilities Only the manager knew how to check guests in on arrival, we waited 20 mins in the bar before getting our room key , despite checking in on line prior to arrival. It was Christmas party season and all staff were flat out, but that wasn't a good start, all else was fine and the rooms are well appointed , overall we were happy
- Ann (9/5): A very comfortable and interesting place to stay in a great location. - The room was very comfortable and spacious and we enjoyed the breakfast downstairs in the pub. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We found the volume of the music played in the pub in the evening
too loud.
- Ellen (9/5): Perfect for the Barbican - The room was tidy, comfortable and quiet the Barbican theatre was a 5 minute walk away. The pub breakfast was delicious and the beer was good too Nothing it was very good
- STEPHANE (8/5): -
- Melissa (6/5): Disappointing small room badly set out - It was very well located for the party we attended, the room was nicely decorated. Room was very small, and not well set out the telly was on the wall to the side of the bed, so couldn’t watch when sat on the edge of the bed or in the one chair (there was 2 of us) the full length mirror was at the end of the bed but with not enough space to stand far enough away from it. This room was up 3 flights of stairs no lift( which I didn’t realise) I walk with a stick so this was hard for me! To be fair it did say this in the property description but right at the bottom this should be more clear.
- Debbie (10/5): - Stayed before and will stay again. Excellent Nothing to dislike
- Helen (7/5): Great decor, a character destination, at £220 without breakfast I didn’t consider it a bargain. Maybe better for a coupl - Fantastically comfortable bed and beautiful warm, light duvet- also a quite wonderful big bath with gallons of hot water. Plus decent walk in shower. Good minibar which - treat - includes a small bottle of real milk for my cups of tea. Two very steep flights of stairs to my room and a key card to get access to the bedrooms straight off the street. I felt a bit potentially vulnerable. Prefer a hotel reception arrangement.
- Mike (9/5): -
- Robert-Jan (8/5): Great value and very nice room - for a hotel room in London it is very spacious and a very nice atmosphere. The breakfast is limited, but you are close to all kind of restaurants
- Tracey (9/5): -
- Paul (7/5): A nice room and location but bathroom needs updating. - Comfortable and nicely furnished. A characterful room. Shower was very poor with an ineffective shower head and an old fashioned shower curtain. Historic windows leaded broken in some places and not shutting properly. There was double glazing but the outer windows need some attention.
- Stewart (9/5): -
- Azra (7/5): - Bra läge och bekväm säng. Lyhört och väldigt brant trappa till rummet, något dyrt.
- Francesco (8/5): Nice room in central location, a bit pricy though. - very nice room in a central location. Querky-retro look. Price was excessive. Over £200 per night for a room with no breakfast above a pub.
- Jordi (9/5): -
- Korņilova (9/5): -
- philip (10/5): - Location was superb, as was the room. The staff were all very friendly and helpful to - could not have done more to make me feel welcome
- Debbie (8/5): -
- Brenda Lynn (10/5): Lovely stay - Loved the location and the neighborhood
- Olivia (8/5): Beautiful room, we had the Market room! The suite, not sure others are as good - Room was LOVELY!
Communication wasn’t great, I called twice, emailed, messaged on booking.com, messaged on instagram over a week before the stay and didn’t get any response at all….
Also said London views, there are no views!
- Hens (8/5): -
- Scott (10/5): -
- Elena (6/5): This room was not easily accessible and small. - The location of the hotel was close to the tube station. The room was cute although small. There was no elevator. This should have been more clear in the description. The room we got was on the 3rd floor and my Mom and I each had a large suitcase. The suitcases were very hard to carry to the room, and there was no staff to help. The stairs were very narrow and twisty. My mom cannot carry her luggage so I had to carry both our suitcases up and down 3 flights of steps. Also the shower head was broken and sprayed water all over the bathroom. The room was small. I do not feel this room was worth 200 GBP a night.
- Lisa (10/5): - The pub had great food & service. Very handy to the Farringdon station.
- Brian (9/5): -
- Jennifer M. (8/5): - The room was small but very charming. We only stayed one night, so it worked for us; however, if we had been staying longer, it would have been tight or cluttered with our suitcases and surface area to put your daily items, like a crossbody, wallet, etc. The bathroom was a good size as well. We were on the top floor, so getting luggage up and down really sucked. Even though I knew in advance the staircase could be an issue, it was still a shock to go up four floors with full-sized luggage! Oops! We got there early, and at any hotel, an early check-in is always a gamble, but I was a little surprised that they were so strict about the 3:00 pm check-in. Usually, if a room is ready early, you can access it sooner. Not a huge deal for us as we went straight into sightseeing, but if you are hoping to get in early, it is likely not possible. The staff were friendly and accommodating in holding our luggage in a locked area. We had a plumbing issue, and they resolved it right away, even though it was late at night. The pub was close to multiple subway stations, which was great. We unfortunately didn't eat or drink at the pub so can't speak to that.
- Silvan (9/5): We had a very enjoyable holiday weekend with friends at the Fox & Anchor. - The hotel is located in close distance to Farrington station, which is an ideal starting point for exploring London in all directions. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant food was delicious at a fair price.
- Mark (8/5): We’ll be back - Beautiful room, quiet, cosy. Authentic Historic Hotel
- Kathryn (9/5): -
- Lister (5/5): Will not return and will not recommend. - Noisy air conditioning even when turned off.
Didn’t sleep at all the first night.
The staff welcome on arrival and when leaving poor- the staff need to learn to at least smile occasionally and perhaps not say. ‘I dunno I’m just bar staff!’
- Tommaso (10/5): - Struttura accogliente e comoda.
Bagno spazioso, vasca da bagno comoda e letto veramente comodo.
- Nick (9/5): Very enjoyable. - Breakfast was very good. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was very comfortable. Plumbing needs a little work.
- HAROLD (9/5): Very charming rooms with convenient access to trains - Did not have the breakfast Typical comforter bed coverings are too hot for me and the insides must be removed. A top sheet and blanket is better.
- Julie (8/5): - A great place to stay! The staff was attentive and very friendly. It was very cool to stay in such an old historic building and the pub/restaurant
- Nicola (7/5): -
- Karen (8/5): Comfortable hotel in great location. - Great Location Rain shower to low and head needed replacing
- Brett (9/5): Spacious, quiet, and comfortable with great air conditioning - just let down by the unreliable WiFi. - We had a great stay at the Fox & Anchor during a warm summer visit to London. The room was surprisingly spacious and very well-appointed, with excellent accessibility and a large, comfortable bathroom. Despite the lively pub downstairs, we were pleasantly surprised by how quiet the room was—perfect for a good night’s sleep.
The air conditioning was a real highlight, especially given the heat during our stay. It kept the room cool and comfortable throughout, which made a big difference after long days exploring the city.
The only downside was the WiFi. Unfortunately, it was patchy at best and often dropped out completely. Coming from Australia, we had hoped to rely on the hotel WiFi rather than burning through international data, so this was a bit disappointing.
That said, the overall experience was very positive, and we'd still recommend the Fox & Anchor for its charm, comfort, and location - just be prepared with your own data plan if you need reliable internet. The Wifi, or lack there of. Expect to use your phone data.
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carly (6/5): Overall pleasant and lovely room however maintenance and replenishments were very poor - The room was lovely, super comfortable bed with clean white sheets
Overall clean with towels replaced daily
Tv with a wide variety of channels
A big bathtub in front of the window which gave the room an elegant feel We found a bottle of ice tea underneath the bed from previous customers
The shower leaked a lot out onto the bathroom floor despite the shower door being shut
The tv remote did not work properly
We didn’t get daily top ups of water, coffee, milk or sugar so had to go downstairs into the pub to request some
The lid for the kettle didn’t work so we had to balance a teacup on top of it so that the water would boil
The air conditioning was very loud and had quite a bad smell
The cold tap for the bathroom sink came off in our hands multiple times just from turning it on
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - My favourite place to stay in London. Love the pub and the rooms are gorgeous. Huge comfy beds
- Annik (8/5): Very good -
- Sandra (9/5): Great pub as an alternative to a hotel - Rooms were quirky and very comfortable. Great location and close to the underground The stairs are very steep and the bar was quite dark when you walked in. Took a little time for your eyes to adjust
- David (9/5): Superb - Room was comfortable and brilliant air con on a really hot evening. Lot of stuff in the room, four cups and 10 glasses, sometimes, less is more.
- Toscano (9/5): Comfortable and quiet room above a pub in central London - Very well appointed room above a busy pub in Farringdon but very quiet and comfortable which was a nice surprise. Separate bathroom with roll top bath was lovely and staff were helpful on check and out. Nothing really. The room was even better than I expected.
- Scarlet (8/5): - Overall this was a nice boutique hotel. The rooms have a lot of character and a vintage feel, in a cool way. The room was clean, spacious, and had all the amenities you could need. In a great area of London, lots of shops, pubs, restaurants, and public transit.
The reason I give 4 stars is bc the check-in process is not quite 4star and the bathroom sink didn’t drain well.
- Pelin (10/5): Heart of London - Beautiful room, wonderful location. In the heart of London, easy to access. Definitely recommend!
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional -
- Quentin (6/5): Great room but I was treated terribly by the manager at check in. - The room was great. The service from the manager was terrible. On arrival there was a complication with my booking due to a mix up between booking.com and the hotel. I showed the manager my proof of payment aswell as several emails showing evidence of this. I even showed my bank statement on my phone with proof of payment! The manager however continued to claim my card must of been refused and rather than trying to help, said I either had to pay again or take it up with bookings. His attitude was absolutely terrible, making me feel like I was the one in the wrong when I clearly wasn’t. He left me standing waiting for over an hour showing no courtesy or sympathy - infact he left me standing with my bags while he left to have his dinner, not giving me or any of the other staff (who were all very nice but clearly quite afraid of him) anyindication of what was happening. It was an absolute definition of the ‘computer says no’ attitude- incredibly infuriating. Completely not what you would expect from a smart London hotel. The whole check in experience was made unnecessarily stressful by the curt and rude nature of the manager. Otherwise the room was lovely but by that point my evening had already been ruined by the stress caused. Once the issue was resolved between the hotel and bookings (with me waiting for over an hour still uncertain if I would have a room for the night) there was no apology or offer of a complimentary drink or anything. It genuinely felt like the manager would have preferred if I’d have left. I remained calm throughout and tried not to get stressed, knowing that the manager would have probably preferred that, giving him an excuse to perhaps cancel the booking. I feel this must be conveyed here as it really was completely unacceptable hospitality. I hope the manager might learn from this and in future treat his guests with more respect and sympathy. The error clearly had nothing to do with me but until it was resolved the assumption was that it was my problem to resolve
- Rob (9/5): Superb -
- Lisa (7/5): Okay - Room was stylish with nice touches, what I’d expect for the price.
Great location
Manager (lovely lady) on the Sunday was super helpful to go and retrieve a ‘left behind’ belonging from the room post check out No toilet roll in the room & only realised after no staff available to tell. Luckily had some tissues, probably just an over sight but there was no way to remedy this which was a bit awkward. No English breakfast tea - just earl grey & green tea and that isn’t the general preference in the morning. No decaf coffee
Was advised by bar staff when dropping bags was fine to come later to check in - whilst appreciate the ‘check in by 10’ is in t’s & c’s it would be helpful if staff knew this and helped customers by advising and reiterated this to customers. We made it clear we would be back late (as seeing a show) and the staff behind the bar at the time couldn’t be less interested if they tried or were not bothered or trained to provide advice. Luckily the manager had tried to call me and he came down to check us in and gave us our bags which were stored - albeit he made us feel like naughty school girls telling us off which wasn’t appreciated. We were nothing but polite and apologetic. We asked he take the feedback to ensure his staff advise ‘customers’ (yes - imagine, a customer paying circa. £250 for a night in a room in a pub) of the terms so it’s really clear. We were there around 14:30 … got No, you can’t check until 15:00 - I’m sure the room as ready but hey ho! You live and learn and whilst there positives and it wasn’t awful it left a slight bitter taste l, shame.
- Christena (10/5): Exceptional - The property was very central and close to both train and tube stations.
- Adam (8/5): - Great location. Rooms were clean. Staff was stand-off ish. Tv didn’t work. Over priced for what you get.
- Alastair (8/5): Very good - Amazing room, quirky and interesting made our stay enjoyable.
Staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful, thank you. Just minor things.
The light switches are not well located. No milk for tea , *there's a note saying to ring for it but the number wasn't answered and no milk was privided
- Vanessa (8/5): Very happy - Very comfortable modern rooms and clean bathrooms. Shame about the dripping tap in the sink
- Duncan (7/5): Good -
- Tracy (8/5): Comfortable, clean, very nice room and bathroom - Great stay N/A
- Linda (8/5): Very good - Location, friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble
- Natalia (8/5): Very good -
- Lesley (9/5): Superb - Really nice room. Good food and service. A lovely little place with soul.
Amazing bath! The shared spaces could do with a bit of a refresh - stairwell etc. but the room was immaculate and really thoughtfully styled
- Kerasia (8/5): Very good -
- Brett (8/5): Very good - location, room size, bathroom
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (7/5): Comfortable, Good bed and linen didn’t realise we would have to book for breakfast - Location
Homely feel Curtains falling off the rails in our bedroom
Noise from the very early drayman delivery was extremely loud ( we knew there would be some noise as close to the market and it is a pub! But it was so loud that we couldn’t sleep!
- Caryl (8/5): Historical , character filled luxury stay in great location - Great location and amazing building / pub. Rooms very nicely styled and claw foot baths and toiletries a lovely treat. Able to store luggage after checking out which was very helpful and transferring from international flight to visiting family at xmas so had a lot of luggage between us. Breakfast was delicious. We were a family group travelling with adult children - first room was perfect the second had badly stained carpets in entrance and lights that didn’t work which reduced the luxury feel- also near fans which went on and off all
night which could disturb some. Might be worth checking which rooms available and ask quieter room if an issue. I would recommend a bit of a spruce up to St Paul’s though .
- Beth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aleksandra (8/5): Traditional English rooms&pub, quiet and cosy, great for couples. - The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room and the pub were lovely, very old and traditional but comfortable and had all you need. The breakfast was excellent! I really liked the big bathroom with both shower and huge bathtub. The Elizabeth line is a very short walk away. It was really quiet too. Some amenities a little outdated
- John (8/5): Very good -
- Adam (8/5): Very good -
- Cheryl (8/5): Lovely comfortable stay - Beautiful quirky room . Everything we needed. Quite and comfortable .
- Susan (9/5): Friendly and convenient - The breakfast was delicious. Lots of stairs to climb
- Niall (9/5): Superb -
- Bailey (8/5): Very good -
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good - Comfortable bed and fantastic shower
- Pieter (7/5): Super central quiet and comfy room - We had a super spacious room, I think it was a different one then here on the pictures because we had a shower. Comfortable bed, great stocked mini bar.
Everyone was super friendly, food in the pub was super nice .
It’s quiet and with the tube stations around easy to reach everything. I think certain things could be replaced, e.g the carpet in front of our room door had massive spots on. Or in the bathroom the sealing looses the paint etc. So for me it’s the small details especially when you pay so much money for it.
- Kelly (10/5): - The two rooms that we booked were so cute. The suite room had a couch and an outside patio which was very nice to have as we traveled with family. I loved that the bathroom as the tub had a claw tub and the ground was heated. It is a very charming and rustic. I would definitely go back.
- Gareth (9/5): Superb -
- Emma (8/5): Lovely - Very Cozy rooms, a little on the small side but the design is Gorgeous. Beds very comfy. The walk to the top floor was abit of a killer.
The hair conditioner was completely watered down which was a nightmare after shampooing.
Breakfast downstairs is ridiculously expensive and not that great!
- Rhonda (10/5): Ditch the ordinary! - With tons of character with an Olde London vibe, this is not your average cookie cutter hotel!
My favorite feature was the soaking tub - such a lovely surprise! The stairs are STEEP, so be prepared for a bit of a workout with your luggage. Otherwise, there were no negatives to report.
- Beki (7/5): Really really good, although needs a bit of tlc - Staff (a lady who was there for check in and check out) was lovely, bed super comfortable, the bath was huge and amazing! Loved the decor Shower head as it seemed to be broken, lamp in bathroom was falling off, the ceiling in bathroom needs redoing as it’s pealing and looks to have damp or mould.
- Burkoaideen (10/5): lovely quaint room in a traditional London pub - gorgeous boutique room, totally unexpected when part of a pub. Stayed the night of the Euros semi-final and even with the large crowd downstairs nothing could be heard in the bedroom. Very steep stairs up to the bedrooms - be wary if large suitcases or mobility issues
- Emma (6/5): Lovely staff, great location, but we did not sleep well, and I expected better for the price. - Great location, quirky with character Aircon noisy, windows couldn’t open and if they did it was to extractors and heating units. Without aircon we where at 27 degrees, on kept us awake. Small room, pillows and duvet lumpy, toilet seat moved, we told pub staff and didn’t get fixed.
- Ingrid (7/5): Good -
- Clootie (9/5): Excellent stay - We soon felt very comfortable and at home in the Market Suite. Although the pub was busy we were greeted by a very nice manager in the downstairs bar, checked in and were given our key card and made our way to the first floor. The Market Suite is slightly strange in that you enter via the bathroom but this leads on to a comfy lounge and separate bedroom. I was pleasantly surprised that the lounge had access to a small roof terrace with seating. We went down to the bar mid evening for drinks. Standing room only at first on a busy Thursday eve, but having booked a table for dinner the same manager showed us to a cosy booth at the rear of the pub. We chose the London Platter. A freshly prepared mix of bar snacks to share and it was delicious. A few more drinks were enjoyed before heading back upstairs. I imagine it's quite a peaceful location being in a back street, but as the Market Suite is to the rear of the building it was completely quiet over night. We had the most lovely time and should we be attending the Barbican Theatre again would definitely stay here. One minor point, the heated bathroom floor was incredibly hot. Almost too hot to walk on in bare feet. Perhaps not even required in August?
