Guest Reviews
- Syed Ahmad (2/5): - I stayed here for 2 nights and my experience was very bad. Firstly, this is not really a hotel, it feels more like an Airbnb. My room was on the third floor and the stairs were extremely steep and unsafe. There was no customer service, no housekeeping during my entire 2-night stay I was only given 2 towels, no toilet paper, and no hot water in the tap (only in the shower, and that too after one day). Nobody came to clean the room. It’s definitely not worth €300 for 2 nights. The only good thing about this place is its location in the city center.
- Joel (8/5): - Very convinient from Amsterdam central station which is just 6 minutes walk to the hotel. Eventhough located in central area the place is quiet and peaceful.
- Paul (10/5): - This was a very comfortable place to stay, in an excellent location with a great view of the canal.
Pretty small space, but very adequate for three people.
Bathroom door could use some hooks on the back for towels and clothing, as floor gets pretty wet when showering.
I would stay here again.
Check in and out was very easy.
- John (8/5): - Ideal location and fair price
- Jimmy (4/5): - Room is very small, so does as bathroom. Stairs are narrow may easily fall. Coffee supply only for one day and no cleaning of the trash. It is not worth for what I have paid and very unexpected to live in such conditions of the room.
- Douglas (4/5): - It would have been nice to have more than a third of a roll of TP for a two day stay, hand towels, cleaner accommodations. Old and in drastic need of rent
- Angela (8/5): The price is right! - Hotel Canal View is a budget-friendly, no frills room for Amsterdam. It's not a cute, boutique place, but the bed was comfortable, the room was clean, the shower worked & the water was hot. I arrived early & the manager took my luggage for me. When I had to check out early to hit the museums, he kept it for me until I returned in the afternoon. I felt safe there, as a woman traveling alone. It's within walking distance of the train station. Stairs are steep, so be careful! Located near some nice restaurants. There are certainly nicer places, but for what I paid, I'm pleased with what I got.
- Chin (4/5): - The design of the bathroom is terrible. Not enough lightings along the staircases.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not brilliant. - The guy running the hotel was nice but have got to be honest the hotel is rough, ok if you just want somewhere to sleep and get clean, the location is brilliant so that really makes up for everything else thw hotel lacks.
- Chin (8/5): - Convenient location. Good access to Central Station.
- Helen (2/5): - This is the worst place we have ever stayed at. Stairs that are a ladder really just to get into your room. Rude manager. Told us to go away snd come back later! It was 9.30am! Torn towels mold in bath room. TV that did not work. It is not a hotel. It is not even hostel quality. Even prisioners have better living conditions. The most expensive hotel ever. Only thinggoing for it is the location
- Francine (6/5): Excellent location super noisy - The check in was easy and the room was clean and as advertised but it is so noisy! The people staying above us came home late and we were woken up by them on the stairs and then talking in their room. The windows do nothing to muffle the street noise and anyone talking outside the window sounded like they were in the room with us. While it is in a great location we would not stay here again.
- Mark (2/5): - Canal view, more like dungeon view. I was unlucky to have a room facing a wall with a bathroom that smelled so bad of sewerage I heaved every time I went in it.
This is a hostel at hotel prices. All you get is a basic dated room.
Avoid!
- Robert (8/5): - Melvin was very accommodating
- Philip (8/5): - Wonderful location. The staff was amazing. Very helpful. Luggage was difficult as the stairs were steep and narrow.
- LeoFede30 (2/5): NO NO NO! - It's the worst hotel I have ever been to.
It was cold and humid. It is a NO NO.
The room is very small and old, and the toilet has the smallest sink I have ever seen. It is impossible to wash your face, and there is no mirror in the toilet. There is no wardrobe.
- Sprinter2237 (10/5): Good experience - Good service, good personel and super location, clean rooms bedroom and wc. Good price for Amsterdam central. Narrow hotel but really good experience. Street was amazing looking canals. Wifi was fast. Thank you for everything I will come again.
- Vernon (2/5): - Adhering to the "non-refundable" policy for this room when a cencallation was requested 2 months prior to the stay is very predatory and oportunistic behavior. Shameful
- Mary (10/5): - Wr enjoyed our canal view room. Melvin the manager was helpful.
- Lori (10/5): - Easy check in. Value was great for Amsterdam.
- CRAIG (2/5): - Stairs to upper room 5 were exceptionally steep to the point of being dangerous. No way would they pass building regs. Tv also didnt pick up any channels and for £167 was massively overpriced.
- Kyle (10/5): - Very accommodating with late check in times. The room was clean and had everything I needed.
- Marie Angeline (8/5): - Everything was fine but be ready to climb up steep stairs especially if you are bringing your luggage.
- Keith (4/5): - Location was the only thing going for it. The on-site rep told us we get what we pay for, but this was 2.5 x more money and we had much better accommodation other prime locations.
- Nancy (10/5): - The location was excellent, close to the main train station. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room was tiny, but for the price and location it was good value for a solo traveler on a budget.
- phil (10/5): - This room has such an amazing view and is located right in the central area, so you are close to all the shops and dining. Also, everything you might want to do is within walking distance. The owner knew me by name before i even arrived and he is super friendly. It really added to the value of the room and the stay. If you visit Amsterdam, this is the place to stay. It covers the basics and lets you experience life in the city. There is no elevator, so you are going up some stairs, but hey, that's how they do it in Amsterdam! I would gladly, without a doubt stay here again.
- Dinesh (10/5): - Melvin was the best property manager I dealt with on the trip. He is so responsive and accommodating
- Usha (2/5): - Very rude service very steep and narrow and winding stairs to climb to the worst room I’ve spent a night in. The man said he wasn’t happy I woke him at 9 30 am to check out and ask help to bring my small suitcase down the scary stairs
- Nicole (6/5): - Small room, smells a lot a cigarette. Location is good, centric. Room recommended only for short time and for sleep.
- Anthony (10/5): ONE NIGHT SOLO TRAVELLER - GOOD ROOM FOR ONE NIGHT NEXT TO THE SMALLEST HOUSE EVER.
- Peter (10/5): - The staff were funny and great craic.
If you're looking for a budget hotel this is the place.
- Matthew (10/5): - Bathroom is extremely tiny but overall great room especially location!
- Manggala (10/5): - We were enjoyed our stay here, the staff was very welcomed and very helpful, He brought our luggage upstairs. And the location is near the centraal station, and tram stop. Walkable. Although the stairs were a bit steep, but still love this place. If we come back to Amsterdam, definitely will book this hotel again. Thank youuu so much
- Nancy (10/5): - The staff were helpful and accommodating when my flight was delayed and I arrived late. Someone met me upon arrival and also helped me get connected to the internet. My room was small and basic, there were plenty of stairs but the location close to the Central Station and reasonable price made this a good choice. I will be back.
- Jonathan (10/5): - Great location for seeing Amsterdam.
- David (10/5): - You have found the ideal place to stay if you are looking for a small hotel that is within ten minutes' walking distance of the central station and has a plethora of small shops and restaurants all around it. This place is just as good as the next budget hotel, and it's right on the canal. If you've been to Amsterdam before, you'll notice that this place is just as good as any other. If you want to complain and cry about everything, you probably shouldn't go to Amsterdam in the first place. The staff here is extremely helpful and eager to assist you as long as you are friendly and never lie about anything and obey the rules in the hotel and in the city.
- Eryn (10/5): - Loved this property! The manager was super kind and accommodating. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
- Callum (6/5): Cheap and cheerful - Cheap and cheerful
- Peter (4/5): - Small and misleading
- Tony (6/5): - Unable to open the windows for some airflow and very little when open very small toilet and bathroom
- Verified traveler (2/5): - There is nothing else acceptable about this hotel except the location. The price is expensive. The stairs are very dangerous. The room has a strong smell and is polluted. I ordered a triple room. The bathroom does not even have a basic place to put clothes. The sink is only as big as a palm and there is no hot and cold water. There is no hot and cold water in the room. The wardrobe doesn't even have a place to put clothes. I will never consider ordering again.
- Iolo (6/5): - Perfect location and chill host. Do be aware that the stairs are very steep and narrow, the bathroom floods (with no spare towels given) and the TV doesn’t work. Recommend if staying for a night or two.
- Samuel (8/5): - A great little hotel, however I do believe people need to realise it offers basic rooms which are safe and clean. Very near to the train station, and a few minute walk to central and shopping/dining area.
- Ridvan (4/5): - Too small room, bath. No AC, no hair dryer. However location is the best thing for the hotel. Performans/price is not bad.
- Kathryn (6/5): Meh - Not great, the tiniest of tiny sinks (only good water), a mirror only for giants, old towels crumples up amd left behind curtains, and an awful smell.
The sheets & bedding seemed clean, but a few spiders and other tiny friends were relocated to outside.
The view from my window was of metal grating about 1 meter from the window.
- STACY (8/5): - Good location simple accommodation
- Troy (6/5): - Location is good, very close to Amsterdam Centraal. Room was pretty basic, no elevator so keep that in mind. Staff was friendly. Close to a good breakfast location and nice that it is on a canal.
- Cinthia (6/5): Nice but no canal view - It was a clean room but no view of the canal. Just a view of the wall next door. The stairs up to the room is very narrow, steep and winding and there is not an elevator.
- Bryan (10/5): Great Value Hotel. - This is a basic hotel with a great location that is close to the Central Train Station. It's right next to the canal and it's fun to watch the boats go by while sipping a nice glass of wine. The hotel has steep stairs to your room and there is no elevator just so you know. We enjoyed our stay and would consider staying again.
- Danielle (10/5): - Wonderful host. Melvin was so friendly and helpful! The hotel is in a perfect location! Would stay again as a base for exploring. Thanks Melvin! You made our stay!
- SALLY (10/5): Accommodating host and historic building. - We are a family of three and stayed here for two nights. We found the whole experience very enjoyable. The building is from the 1600s so if you’re looking for modern amenities and an elevator, this is not the place for you. We were on the top floor and we were warned by our host that the stairs got worse each level you went up. He was right! Once we made it to our room, it was pleasant with a great view of the canal. Our host was super accommodating and woke up early on a Sunday to let us drop our bags so we could enjoy the city luggage free. The location is only a short walk to central station making getting around by tram, metro and train quite easy. The bathroom is small and the room was no frills but everything was clean and worked.
- Verified traveler (4/5): For one night is ok - The only one good thing to mention is only the location. The receptionist was not easy to find him. The room was dirty(bedsheet was broken and a bit wet, there are some food package still under the bed) the bathroom door was not able to close, the stairs was not easy to climb. If you have big luggage or travel with old people, not recommend this place to stay.
- Passenger763889 (4/5): Poor - I don't know how to describe this "hotel".
When we got there we wondered if we had come to the right place as it was very anonymous. Just a sticker with "Hotel Canalview" on a small door. As we entered, I began to ask myself if this was really what I booked.
It is technically a hotel. There is a fully functional bed (pillows are hard and high), a TV that you can watch Netflix on (if you have an account), a shower and a toilet. Even a coffee machine, a kettle and a hair dryer. But the room also have a reeking smell of pot, and a smell of mold in the bathroom. Water was leaking from the ceiling in the bathroom when someone showered above. However, that problem was temporarily resolved during our stay. The sink is minimal and only has cold water. The shower has both hot and cold water though. There is nowhere to hang a towel in the bathroom.
On the inside of the door to the room is a hook strip with five hooks where you can hang some clothes, that is the only "storage" available.
To highlight something positive, the room was well cleaned and had clean sheets and towels.
If you are 18-25 old and just in Amsterdam to smoke pot this is the place for you. But if you have any higher standards then that you should find some were else to sleep.
- Djibril (8/5): - Melvin was great from the on set of my trip.
Understanding and customer focused service from him was much appreciated. He let me use his charger for my stay, very accommodating and honest.
It was a little warm in my room which was surprising. Great thing is the windows open nice and wide. Great mattress and pillows.
Thanks Melvin, appreciate you fully.
Cheap accommodation in the heart of central Amsterdam, it’s true to its rating ( ** ) but the service and location was far superior.
- Keith (2/5): No heat - First night temp down to 45F. No onsite manager. Guy who lives next door handles. I told him that night too cold. Said others complained and he was working on it. Never any heat. Next day told me had to contact off site owner so he could remotely turn on heat. Guess never got in touch with or owner refused. Hotels.com refused a requested partial refund for that night because owner never responded.
- David (8/5): - If your looking for a place near the train station and small efficient rooms that have your own bathroom and shower this place will be fine
- Mercy (2/5): - Didn’t stay @ the hotel. Terrible place to stay in. Not worth the price. The receptionist was pretty nice to show the room. No rooms on 1st floor. No elevator or lift. Not recommended to people with heart problems. With steep narrow stairs, dangerous to go up and down. Requesting for refund, pls. Suggestions: pls indicate upon reservation, if no lift or elevator at the hotels. Thank you!
- David (10/5): - Thank you for your hospitality. I left the key outside your office door on the wooden shelving.
- John de (8/5): - Small apartment. Street noise on Saturday night. Otherwise it is quiet. Close to Amsterdam Centraal which makes for an easy connection to Schiphol airport.
- Emma (10/5): - I stayed this weekend with my Mrs and we had a fabulous time the guy on the reception was really nice so kind. Room was ideal for us clean and had a big to with sports channels. Shower was good, room wasn’t very big but it was perfect if there is 2 of you. We’d defiantly stay again and will be later on in the year
- Verified traveler (2/5): Terrible Service - The room was extremely cold both nights of our stay. When we contacted the manager of the hotel for some additional assistance with heating for our stay. He told us he would provide a heater but it was never give to us during the stay. Both of the nights were extremely cold and we had no heat.
- BLAISE (6/5): - TV doesn’t work
Bathroom very small
No elevator
Building very thin …
- Martin (8/5): Great stay - Very good service, and very accommodating. Excellent arra
- Verified traveler (2/5): Worst experience ever! - No towels were provided and no extra toilet paper. When we entered the unit there was only half a roll of toilet paper there. The Host/owner stays outside of the property and left a phone # to contact him. When we required towels/toilet paper no answer. The washroom was tiny and horrible, sink is inside the shower and there is no standing space. Feels cloister phobic. The day we checked out we contacted host since he was not at property, he arrived and said you could have just left the key on the door why did you call me, when he didn’t even give us instructions in the first place. Usually all hotels I’ve stayed at you check out with an agent or front desk. He also did not acknowledge the fact that nothing was provided. Definitely not worth what we paid!! There was nothing good about this hotel except the view from the window! Worst experience ever!
- Jason (10/5): - Close to the train station. Hotel was on a street great for strolling. Quiet, for the most part.
- Fred (2/5): - The place was dirty, dangerous and stank of tobacco. The rear room was small
- Global749298 (2/5): Hotel Canal view (Yeah really) - Another Amsterdam hotel that is grossly overpriced.Again, please bring climbing gear to get to any of the rooms, the stairs are so steep you almost need oxygen masks and if you are physically disabled forget it completely. The name Canal view seemed totally inappropriate because when I opened the curtains I was faced with a Timber and galvanized wall 4ft away with absolutely no view of anything. What a dump.Best avoided alltogether.Sleep in a bus station,it would be better.
- Brian (4/5): - This is a backpackers hotel. No usable sink. Tiny sink in the shower with no mirror. Linen was questionable. Good location near Central Station but disappointing. Video/TV did not work. One old towel provided. Loud when guests flushed toilet.
- Brian (2/5): - Terrible. The smoke smell was overwhelming, the comforter felt grimy. There was no toilet paper and we were kept up by what sounded like rats in the walls which is likely due to the presence of a large rat's nest outside the window that opened to the walls of 3 other buildings. We left after the first night and ate the cost. You could not pay me to stay here again.
- Julián (8/5): - Good location
- YUK-LEUNG (6/5): - Small hotel with nice view. No reception, need to email or call to get what you want. But their response is fast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice place to stay, beds were comfy and has a nice view of the canal. Good location, near the train station and within walking distance of all the attractions.
Only issue was the small bathroom.
- Patricia (10/5): Good price, good location - Room was very spacious and with lots of natural lighting. Bathroom had a bit of a bad smell (normal in old sewer systems).
Location was great, 3 blocks from train station and 1 block from shopping area.
Only drawback are the stairs they are very narrow and steep - very hard to maneuver your luggage
- Monika (4/5): Not worth the price - The room was very small and basic, with windows facing a blank wall. The bathroom was cramped and mouldy, with water dripped through the ceiling and the light fittings. The owner helped us carry the luggage upstairs - we would have struggled otherwise as the stairs are extremely steep.
The only good thing about the hotel is a good location.
- shelley (6/5): - The check in process was a little weird….had to ring the bell and wait for the guy next door to come out and let us in. He seemed to be asleep both times. The room was very hot with no AC and the windows could hardly be cracked - they were old heavy wood windows with nothing to hold them up with. There were also no blinds or curtains on the canal facing windows so we felt like everyone walking by on the street could see us laying in bed…..
- colinb894 (6/5): Okay for two nights but …: - good location near Central Railway station and Damrak but ..TV in room 3 didn’t work at all ever, very steep narrow staircase, big bed but small room , no view but couldn’t hear traffic , no facilities but reasonable value for money , , you’ll have to pay a tourist tax ..not sure for r what as over one hour wait in line at airport passport control and no public toilets etc…
- Andreas (8/5): Good location - Was ok and would use again, very basic but had everything I needed. Good location.
- Nazmoon (6/5): - The room was very basic, bathroom to small, no showers door. The location had a great view of the canal, close to the train station, shopping, restaurants and walkable.
- Frances (8/5): - Perfect for a weekend stay.
- Jorge Paul (8/5): - It was near to centraal station and the shopping area.
- Zaw Win (6/5): - Good location.
no staff/ difficult to contact with staff
- Elliot (2/5): This is a bedsit NOT a hotel! - This must be the grottiest 'hotel' in Amsterdam. We had two rooms - second and top floor - the top floor stunk of cigarette smoke ingrained in everything (I suspect a smoker lives in this room when the hotel isn't booked as opening the window for 2 days did nothing!). The bed is U shaped and so uncomfortable - it should have been changed many years ago.
The room has mosquitos squashed all over the walls, grubby hand marks on white walls, and nothing had been cleaned properly. The shower consists of a shower with hand basin (cold tap only), a loo that you need to be a contortionist to sit on. The place needs a very very deep clean.
On the Sat night there was a rave in one of the neighbouring properties which started after midnight and finished at 7am, you could hear was the base thumping and people shouting all night.
The only redeeming feature of this place is the location - and even that was ruined by the rubbish dumped in front and a dozen seagulls squawking all morning following the all night rave!
This is not a hotel, but 6 bedsit rooms that they've converted on the cheap to include a shower. It reminded me of backpacking through SE Asia 25 years ago, apart from the price - this was not a cheap couple of nights GBP1,000 for 2 rooms - I regret choosing this place and either should have spent more, or stayed at the Ibis, or moved further out of the centre.
Be warned.
- Peter (8/5): - Everything was awesome
And close to Everything
- Montse (8/5): - The pictures don’t do justice to the actual rooms. I stayed two nights with my husb and MIL in a triple room, and it was way more spacious than I thought it would be. The stairs can be complicated for anyone with restricted mobility but other than that it’s totally fine. Location is GREAT, our room was clean and the king size bed was very comfortable. Little noisy in the morning due to neighbors yelling. We arrived later than expected and the host waited for us to check us in (let him know your arrival time beforehand) he was very friendly and helpful. Would book again.
- James (10/5): - This hotel is really basic. A room, a window that opens, a really basic bathroom, a television and that is it really. Limited window for check in as well. But at that point, wow, the staff here was so helpful and friendly.
- Domina (10/5): - Awesome location, great host (he let us leave our bags at the property after the check out). It was clean, the bathroom was a little small and the stairs are steep but its great value for the money.
- Mary (10/5): - Beautiful area opposite the canal on Singel street, and easy to walk to from the central train station. The staff member who greeted us at reception, Melvin, was very helpful and did his best to make us comfortable, but… The room #5 (and there are only 5) was up three flights of very narrow curved staircases which were difficult to navigate with suitcases. It was a tiny room with a slanted ceiling, as it was the attic, and would not be suitable for anyone tall. There were no bedside tables, a tiny bathroom with a tiny corner sink which was right in the shower, no cupboard or hangars and only 4 hooks on an over the door-type attachment. Very bare bones accommodation, not good value.
- Sally (6/5): - The hotel had only its name printed on a wooden door- it was a bit hard to find. We were on the third floor and had to use a tight semi spiral staircase with very narrow steps. The window looked out at a brick wall and someone had used the windowsill as an ashtray. The bed was comfortable. It was a very bare bones room.
- Christopher (4/5): - i completely agree with the april 15th review.
If you have no expectations you will be fine !
I spent 3 days in largest room overlooking the canal, but everyday I walked through a mini construction site, painting, plastering etc.
They apparently installed mini towel hooks on bathroom door while I was out one day. I had to ask for hand towels but they did not provide facecloths....
There was an odour of 'POT' on my linens and comforter that kept me awake.
I think the listing should not be rated under Hotel, but maybe under a lesser Heading.
i submitted this review and never got a reply from you or an acknowledgement.....!
i have taken to searching for the review online in your site AND now notice that my review AND the review i referenced in my review who had a similar experience........ARE NOT listed! this is alarming to me!
Please reply promptly to these comments.....ps I am not a Robot ! I AM a human and a regular user!
- David (10/5): - If your looking for a basic place with your own bathroom and shower and a small bedroom this is the place and it’s only 5 minutes from Central Station. If your looking for full service daily housekeeping and restaurant this is not your place! It’s Amsterdam and if you been here before everything you need is basic necessities vs a resort hotel! Recommended to those that are experienced with Amsterdam hotels
- Tracie (6/5): Overpriced - My expectations were not high, given the rating and other reviews, but I would not stay here again. It was more like a distant relative's spare bedroom, not a hotel or even a hostel. The room was small, with no furnishings other than the bed which was fairly comfortable, tv, tiny table with a coffee maker, luggage rack, and hooks on the back of the door for coats. Bathroom was in better condition than I expected, but water from the shower pooled behind the toilet and did not drain, sink was barely large enough to spit in, no rug/towel to dry your feet on, and nowhere to hang your towel while showering, towels smelled like mildew - gross; there was a hair dryer which was unexpected. The worst part was the marijuana smell coming from other rooms, despite the listing being 'no smoking'. Opened the window, to get fresh air, but it wouldn't stay in place, wind kept blowing all the way open and it was too cold/wet to leave, blinds were broken. Stairs are incredibly steep and would be difficult to maneuver with suitcases; I worried about exiting if there was a fire. Relatively clean, but the walls need washing and it's time to update the pillows, bedding, and towels - add a bedside table and rug while you're at it. Location was good, not great. Price should have been much lower for what we got - even in Amsterdam.
- Pat (6/5): Melvin helped with bags! - Steep steps, ask for room 1.
- Nelson (8/5): - Well, this hotel is more a hostal, is very small, don't have a reception, just a key to open the door of the hotel and a key to open the room. Very important to know, if you have problems whit small places this is not for you, if you have problems with stairs this is not for you, the stairs are very small and very difficult to climb. Is in a very nice place and centric location.
- Vincent (8/5): - Perfect location.
Not enough towels. No mirror in the bathroom to shave. TV wouldn't turn on.
- Alex (2/5): - There was no heat available!! The person running it told us that the owner didn’t believe it was cold enough yet to turn the heat on and that he, Melvin, had so control over the heat.
It was -1C!! We could see our breath in the room! It was FREEZING!!
No hot water tap at the sink as well!
It his named Hotel Canal View, our view was an enclosed space about 3x2 metres.
We found another hotel and left!
We would like a refund!!!
- Megan (6/5): Ok for one night - They allowed early check in which was great and the man that let us in was very friendly.
However, it was really cold, the heating was not on and there was no way to turn it on. Also, the hotel was not manned overnight so when some people came back at 5:30am and were really loud and loud outsider the door at some points which was a bit unsettling as single female travellers.
- Esther (6/5): - Great location and economical. Bare bones room with a steep narrow staircase.
- Treena (8/5): - Great location, friendly atmosphere.
- Victor (8/5): - The room was small but comfortable. The steps to get to the rooms are challenging if you have luggage. Overall it was nice, close to public transportation.
- Ian (6/5): - A very pleasant stay I had a single room ok for what I needed the one thing was it needed a wardrobe in the room as there was no ware to hang your clothes on coat hanger o the back of the door was no good also a hot water tap needed in the bathroom sink as there was only cold water tap but it was very convenient for all the things to do in Amsterdam.
