Schöne Anlage, toller Pool, nettes Personal.
- Witek (7/5): Beautiful property but a bit shabby and remote - * beautiful grounds
* lovely welcome by the staff * property seems a bit shabby
* no drinking water in the room
* pool was dead, no background music, full of insects
* location is a bit remote, away from the restaurants
* loud noise coming from the nearby bar

- Leann (10/5): - Clean comfortable room A bit far from main town
- Janeen (10/5): - What an amazing resort! The location on a hill overlooking the Mekong River is stunning, a short ride from town. Our room was huge with lovely furnishings and a comfy bed, and the ponds and gardens around the property were gorgeous. The staff were so attentive and helpful. Our reservation included dinner and breakfast and we had several set menus to pick from for each and the food was delicious. The resort facilities are spread out with the lobby, pool and restaurant a fair distance from the rooms. However, the staff were always watching for us and a small vehicle transported us whenever we needed it.

- Deborah (10/5): Making memories on the Mekong River - Location was superb! Our villa room with balcony gave us a memorable view. The shower was wonderful. Dinner was amazing and given we were not in town, dining options were limited. But the chef and staff cooked delicious Laotian dishes. My spouse especially enjoyed the Lao sausage. Breakfast buffet provided many choices including cooked to order eggs. Room price is definitely more than a home stay or hostel. But it was definitely worth it. Keep in mind, it’s built on a hillside. So, you will most likely be climbing steps throughout the property. Highly recommend staying at the Le Grand Pakbeng. Breakfast started at 6:30 a.m. which is actually a little late. Many guests are trying to catch 7:30 a.m. boats. Set up was still occurring. We had learned to be early due to tour group at another hotel monopolizing breakfast. That didn’t happen here. But everyone was in a hurry to eat and check out.
- Phil (8/5): Our stay was great! Thank you! - It’s disheartening to see how brutal people can be when reviewing properties. Especially in a country where disastrous reviews can really hurt not only the property, but the people who are trying so hard to make a living at them.
We did arrive on a slow boat and were picked up at the dock by the hotel shuttle. About a 10 minute drive out of town brings you directly to the resort.
Our villa overlooked the valley and the view was amazing! The sunset really capped off a perfect day on the slow boat. We met people who were smart to break up their slow boat journey and stay a couple of days in Pakbeng. We wish we had done the same as our stay was shorter than we would’ve preferred.
Our villa overlooked the Mekong and it was clean, quiet and well appointed. The team was ready to serve and they were very nice. They even set up a beautiful arrangement as this was our 25th wedding anniversary trip. Dinner was outstanding and breakfast was equally as good. Unfortunately our slow boat departure was early so we really didn’t get to enjoy our full time here.
The shuttle team happily will take you to and from town where I found the Happy Bar! Ask for the happy menu and don’t worry, everything gonna be alright!
I do echo the sentiments that if you can’t do stairs, you’re not going to want a villa where ours was. Best view but the most stairs. We did not stay here long enough to determine if there was a way that they could drive you around for easier access. Perhaps a question you can ask before you book.
Overall, I would recommend this place to people who don’t mind the stairs. Get ready for beautiful sunsets I didn’t mind them as I was stuck on the slow boat all day but I can see how some people would not dig the stairs (at least to our suite which had the best view of the Mekong).
- Nuttaworn (6/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Richard (10/5): Already Reviewed - Already reviewed Already reviewed
- Kathleen (10/5): -
- Joellen (7/5): Fine option in Pakbeng - Clean modern rooms. Beautiful pool although we didn’t have time to use it. Nice restaurant. A bit out of town so we were not able to explore Pakbeng. Many steps throughout property. I felt it was a bit expensive for what it was.
- Stefan (9/5): - Der Manager Kham Pheng macht einen super Job. Alles okay
- Nina Maikaela (10/5): -
- Nikki (6/5): Good midway point on the Mekong with spectacular views. - Great views, amazing spot to break up the journey along the Mekong. Worth the extra $ for the comfort and views. The staff were a little hit and miss. A bit disorganised.
We were a family travelling together with three rooms but were separated. We observed staff mixing up rooms and bookings.
However, this hotel has suffered since Covid and the lack of passing tourists. They have worked hard to keep the resort maintained. So whilst the staff could do with tightening up their organisation, it is worth staying to help contribute to the local economy.
- Andrey (10/5): - Best and amazing hotel in Pak Beng
- Oscar (10/5): - The food, the view Everything was ok
- Carmen (10/5): -
- Anton (10/5): For a unique experience book 'le grand Pakbeng' hotel when you need a change from mediocrity! - Wonderful place with incrediblly beautiful view over the Mekong and the sunset is superb. The pool is delightfully situated 'at the edge' of the slope, the greenery on the premises is superb and extremely clean and well maintained, as the rooms are as well. Let the woman who comes with the truck to pick people from the pier carry a clearly visible sign with the names of the travellers. We were already half-way on foot when she came driving up to us from the back. Of course big apology request which we gave with a smile, but an uphill walk on Lao asphalt with luggage was a bit of a challenge.
- Daria (6/5): Great views but nothing more - The location of the hotel is indeed amazing. One of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen.
The view from the bungalow (we had Mekong River View Villa) was really spectacular.
There are a lot of greenery, flowers, trees at the hotel.
The waiters at the restaurant do their job very well, they are very polite and attentive. Beware of outrageous commission which the hotel charges if you pay by card. They also add on government taxes and vat on food and drinks at the final bill.
The hotel is located on the hill so there are many steps even to the restaurant, pool, reception etc.
The condition of the hotel buildings leaves much to be desired, they are very worn and tired. The pool area is also too tired, the wood flooring is damaged, the sunbeds and umbrellas are in bed and dirty condition. The pool itself has many insects inside. The pool towels are very worn, have yellow colour / stains while originally they were supposed to be white.
After checking into the room, we found used, foul-smelling slippers. The hotel staff replaced them with new ones only after we asked. But it looks like they were ok with offering us first ones :)
The breakfast was strange. One day we were offered just either Western (one sausage, one piece of ham, two eggs, bacon) or Asian (with noodle soup) breakfast served to the table. Another day there was a buffet breakfast but with very limited options. Coffee was always mediocre, which is strange given that Laos has its own incredibly tasty coffee.
We took half board package, and at the dinner we didn’t have any options to choose from - just one set menu with only one choice (no alternative, no veg option), although different every day. Sometimes it was okay, sometimes the dishes were weird. The food was almost always cold.
The worst experience we had was at the New Year Eve. The hotel didn’t organise ANYTHING. No festive dinner (tho there very pretty many guests compared to previous days), no countdown, nothing. Even locals in the village celebrated New Year while the hotel team did nothing for its guests. Probably the hotel couldn’t be bothered for the tourists who come there for one night only.
We had a feeling that the hotel just wants to get money out of tourists who stay there one night only between slow boats.
- Sarah (10/5): - Everything you'd expect from a top-tier resort. Dinner and breakfast were excellent. The view from the bungalow was amazing.
- Roberto (8/5): -
- Richard (10/5): The Best Hotel in Pakbeng - The views were fantastic, especially at the pool where you had a beautiful view of the sunset. Rooms were superb with a nice balcony to view the sunset and river (room 217). Staff were very gracious as in most of Laos so far. Breakfast (western style) was unimpressive. I’m not sure what the sausage is (we’ve had it in Thailand and Laos) but it’s not good.
Wine was expensive
Slow drink service
Lots of stairs so if you have mobility problems I wouldn’t recommend
- Lewis (10/5): -
- Sumedha (9/5): -
- Susan (7/5): Potential is certainly there and the staff is awesome! - Location of the hotel, while it is too far to comfortably walk back and forth into town because the roads are rough and up and down many steep hills, once to the hotel it is a beautiful setting. In terms of the location of the individual rooms in proximity to the reception, pool, bar or restaurant, many of them require a long steep climb.
After booking my husband hurt his back and I had requested that we have a room as close as possible to the common area amenities and was told they would do that.
When we arrived they said they got my message and then proceeded to take us down a very steep hill to our room. I asked about getting something closer and was told we could upgrade to a room HALF WAY up the hill for an additional $40USD. I asked, how many other people were staying in the hotel that night and was told we were the ONLY 2 people. Yet, we still had to stay at one of the furthest away villas. Why could they not upgrade us to be closer to the amenities since NO ONE else was in the hotel?? We even told them we would go to eat in town so they didn't have to have their kitchen staff be prepared for only 2 guests. That seemed to not be appreciated. We asked if the staff driver could take us into town, nope he's already left, so we had to pay $10USD to get us into town and back to benefit the hotel. The next day we visited the elephant sanctuary and the hotel driver dropped us off for that. We gave the hotel a 30 minutes advanced notice of when we needed to be picked up to come back to Le Grand, then waited an additional 30 minutes to be picked up.
That night we had dinner in the restaurant. There was no buffet or set menu. Everything was a la carte off of a regular menu. The mushroom soup was delicious, the fresh spring rolls were also good, the satay and pork skewers were both well done and tough.
The next morning the hotel driver met us outside of our villa at the bottom of the steep hill, thankfully as trying to get our luggage up that hill would have been painful! When we got to the top of the hill the manager met us with our packaged breakfast to take on the boat with us.
We are slow traveling for 15 months, because of that we are very budget conscious. This trip is not like going on vacation where you splurge. But we really wanted to stay at Le Grand so we blew our budget for 2 nights and had high expectations. Sadly, it fell short.
Again, I will add that the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming just not so good at accommodating or thinking outside the box. It would have cost them nothing to do a complimentary upgrade, especially considering we were the only ones in the entire hotel and yet would have immensely changed our experience and this review.
- Gregory (10/5): Tolle Lage mit schöner Aussicht - Herzlicher Empfang, sehr aufmerksames Personal, grosser Pool mit schöner Aussicht, schöne Zimmerausstattung. Längerer Stromausfall im ganzen Dorf. Das Hotel hat keine Schuld daran. Das Hotel hat sich währenddessen sehr bemüht. Das Hotel ist etwas außerhalb des Dorfes.
- Vincent (10/5): - Amazing pool, great rooms, great bed, smiling staff Restaurant food quality is average
- Valeria (9/5): -
- Luke (9/5): - Incredible hotel and for the price you pay it is luxury! Nothing the hotel can do, but the bugs were crazy on an evening, but that is expected been in the middle of no where - maybe get a book zapper?
- Jean-Yves (10/5): -
- Nick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful property perched on the hillside over the river. Gorgeous rooms with amazing views. Staff were great and opened up the pool bar at sunset just for me, and even remembered it was my birthday and made me a special cake. They also made me a box lunch to take on the boat the next day. It's expensive for the area, but this is definitely the place to stay in Pakbeng! Thank you!
- Kitti (9/5): Superb - This is a beautiful place with a stunning view on the river. The pool is refreshing, staff so polite and kind, restaurant serves delicious and quality food. Recommended!
- Joseph (9/5): Superb -
- Samuel (2/5): Disappointingly, no refund. - We didn’t stay at this hotel due to unforeseen circumstances. Although Hotels.com tried to get a refund from the hotel, the hotel would not oblige. We are rearranging our trip to Laos next Spring. We will not be booking this hotel.
- Joanne (9/5): Stayed 1 night as the half way point en route to Luang Prabang by slow boat.Could have stayed another night and make use - Location was amazing with superb views. Staff were so attentive.
- Penelope (8/5): Lovely hotel with beautiful pool - Swimming pool is amazing. Rooms are beautiful. Unfortunately we had to leave early so couldn’t get breakfast but the packed breakfast was nice.
Dinner was also very nice in the restaurant with a lovely view
Staff were lovely Nothing
- Harry (10/5): If you’re overnighting from the Slow Boat to Luang Prabang, you should consider staying an extra night. We stayed 3 nigh - Peaceful, Helpful Staff
- Matt (8/5): Relaxing - Large spacious rooms fabulous views Bit soulless
- Rolf (9/5): Superb - We were really happy to have chosen Le Grand Pakbeng, especially after reading the reviews and listening to the experiences of most other accomodations in this town.
We had a spacious, clean, comfortable bungalow with amazing views of the Mekong. The service, including transport to and from the slow boat pier, was very attentive. The pool (amazing views!) was really cold and closed quite early.
- Claude (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed there
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ping (4/5): Overpriced for a mediocre hotel. - Nice view. Breakfast started early. Staff polite but not efficient. Food was decent. Rooms not very clean and are in need of repainting, restoration. Toilet seat very old etc. At our first stay, we had been told that room service was available, but once we got there manager said no because they are understaffed.
- Isla (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (7/5): Good - Position Cold shower smelly toilet
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): A very enjoyable experience in which we also learned a lot about Laos. - The breakfast was unusual, being ordered and provided to our table. The breakfast was generous and tasty. Perhaps to cater better for older people, there could be additional hand rails alongside steps.
- Zahida (9/5): Superb - The location is spectacular. Syarif, the manager, was great. He remembered all our names and took the effort of having a cake made for my husband's birthday.
- Michael (10/5): Blissful overnight in Pak Beng - Everything! The views along the Mekong are incredible. The staff was so helpful and welcoming. Nothing
- Reno (5/5): Passable - Shower Distance from town. Added room tax was excessive.
- Sebastian (10/5): Stunning - Hidden gem, somewhere along the Mekong in Laos.
Regret that we could not stay longer as we needed to take the boat to Luang Prabang.
- Martin (8/5): Very good - Very nice facility and location. Spacious individual bungalows Breakfast didn't match the overall setting, a bit disappointing. Didn't offer any local food option (only American/English style)
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carol (10/5): Beatiful location. - We just stayed 1 night as we were on the slow boat. Pool was great, with an amazing view. Dinner delicious and breakfast had a small choice with croissants and fresh fruit. They picked us up and took us back from the pier. Room was nice with comfortable beds and hot showers. The staff were lovely and helpful. Nothing.
- Heikkilä (10/5): Exceptional - The accommodation was excellent.
Everything worked great. The welcome drink was very tasty and the sunset by the pool was breathtaking. The staff politely used the visitor's name in all interactions.
I recommend this accommodation. -
- Alejandro (8/5): Very good - Amazing views of the Mekong river. The rooms have their individual balconies. Quiet area. Great pool. Good service. The bathroom smelled a bit like sewage so we had the keep the door closed all the time.
- Madeline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jakob (7/5): Gorgeous hotel, don’t creep around people’s rooms ? Weird - Property was stunning good location great food clean room I dropped a shampoo bottle and it smashed at around 8:30pm after I had been to dinner. when I went to check out they already knew about it before I had the chance to tell them. Meaning someone was in my room at 8am whilst I was at breakfast. (Way too early for cleaning a room) unacceptable and creepy. When messaged about this they did not reply
- Stuart (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thorsten (9/5): Very good - It was very good. Nothing to complain. Especially the pool area with the stunning views and the restaurant were fantastic. Thanks
- Veronique (10/5): quiet relaxing place with amazing views over the mekong. - location: a million dollar view over the mekong and amazing sunset.
very, very friendly staff - good breakfast - nice clean rooms - cheap laundry
we stayed 3 nights: and did a daytrip goldpanning with autentic Khmu and Hmong villages
the second daytrip was to the 1OOO year old tea trea primary forest and lots of beautiful views along the road.
our guide Pheng was amazing, from the Khmu tribe, so he could give us a lot of information.
You can book the daytrips with the hotel: they have many nice daytrips.
- Jenifer (10/5): Incredible customer service with spectacular views!! - Wow! Just wow! We were on a two day cruise down the Mekong River and needed to book our own accommodation. It was this or a cheap backpack hostel. From the moment we arrived, they handled our bags, welcomed us with a cold towel and tea drink, told us times for dinner and pool (since we got in late). We all did a quick change and jumped into the pool for sunset. The view of the river and sunset from their infinity pool was definitely worth the cost of the room. It was perfect temperature after a hot day on a boat. They helped us to our room, got the A/C on and gave directions on how to contact them should we need anything (which we didn’t). They were waiting for us at the pool with towels and smiles. Dinner was not included but very reasonable given we are technically held captive on property. They had a nice selection of Asian and Western dishes but did run out of a few desserts (not the end of the world). The bed was so comfortable. The A/C does blow directly on your face at the bed which wasn’t ideal and the over head fan was too noisy but those were both minor. Since we only had a very short time there we were determined to utilize every piece of our stay. The shower is in its own room with great views. We woke early to enjoy coffee as the sun rose in our personal gazebo and then a quick dip in the pool before breakfast. Breakfast is a buffet style fairly traditional British. The croissants (even heated) were not the best and specialty coffees are extra, but other than that it was all good. Handling the bill at check out was seamless and you have the option of paying by credit card for an additional 4% (very standard).
The level of customer service and English was impressive all around. They are definitely there to “please “ and I would say they did a superb job.
If this hotel wasn’t in such a remote location, I would go back. Hardly a complaint, but if I had to say something it would simply be that the fan was too noisy to leave on overnight and the placement of the AC is too close to the bed as it blows on your face. Again, these are easy work arounds.
- Tracy (10/5): A little bit of magic in Pakbeng - The staff was friendly and professional. The food was good. The coffee was good. The pool was nice. The view was amazing. I would have preferred to be closer to the village
- Scott (10/5): Gorgeous 5-Star Hotel with Top-notch management and staff and million-dollar view! - The Le Grand Pakbeng Hotel was simply wonderful! The property sits perched on the top of the mountain with a beautiful view of the Mekong River and surrounding mountains. Our room was a riverside bungalow and as such, was a actually a separate building. The entire property - and especially our bungalow - was very quiet and peaceful. In the morning you can see the most gorgeous views from the property: the sun peeking through the low-hanging clouds which hugged the mountains. We had an opportunity to visit with Mr. Ket Thipphachanh who is the owner and developed the property not too many years ago. We enjoyed listening to how he developed is vision for a top-rated resort in Pakbeng and how he designed and constructed the resort with the best quality materials and labor. The hotel staff is attentive, warm, and it was clear they wanted to ensure our stay was enjoyable and comfortable.
Our first night at the property we decided to dine at the property's beautiful restaurant at the top of the property with a million-dollar view of the surrounding mountains and Mekong River. The food was delicious and well presented and the restaurant staff absolutely top-notch!
Finally, but not least, the hotel manager, Syarif, was amazing. Syarif's warm manner, personality, and delivery of quality guest service was equal to any 5-star resort in the world. He clearly was striving to ensure we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Le Grand Hotel. We will DEFINITELY be back!
- Robyn (8/5): Very good - Location is stunning. Service was outstanding. Food was excellent. Hot water was not good. Garden in front of our villa was unkempt.
- Stevens (10/5): Great value! Book here to break your boat trip! - Staff were excellent. Great pool, fantastic views. No music!
Food was very good.
Room was spacious with great views Nothing
- Jillian (9/5): A beautiful stay, wonderful high view of the Mekong - Friendliness of the staff! English skills were excellent! The manager was super welcoming, helpful and friendly! The pool was great and the room very comfortable with the best view taken in while having a lovely shower!!!! Nothing, it was low season and we understood that it is also a remote location stay! It was perfect all things considered.
- Melanie (8/5): Very good -
- Katrin (10/5): Serene place - Relaxing in the pool of the le Grand after a day on the slow boat is simply the best. The staff was extremely welcoming, the grounds are beautiful and our room had a splendid view over the Mekong river. A real bless to stay here.
- Wim (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (9/5): Superb hotel with great views - Superb hotel in a very scenic location Nothing
- Kimberley (10/5): Wish I'd stayed longer! - Loved this place. Wished I'd booked a few days. Nothing!
