- Maresa (9/5): - Location was the ultimate winner for this accommodation. Right in the heart of it all. Beautiful to wander the area at night. Rooms were a great size, and having the washer dryer was an added bonus we appreciated.

- Alexander (10/5): Experience a slice of living in Kyoto that'll be a highlight of your journey through Japan - It is an excellent place to stay that gives guests a taste of traditional living in the old city. The house itself is in the heart of the old district of Kyoto, letting guests experience the city and the gion district as a quasi-local for their stay. With full living space accommodations and a grocery store nearby, guests can enjoy cooking and eating in instead of eating out every day if they wish. The house, even though itself is quite antiquated, has received significant upgrades to deliver modern living standards to its traditional structure. The building was very spacious, and every room was delightful to visit. The location allows guests to easily walk to the many wonderful sights of Kyoto and plentiful taxis drive nearby for any guests looking to visit other sections of the city as well. The only minor critique I have is the directions that the staff gives to whatever taxi driver you may get will result in your vehicle being driven up the hill in the extremely narrow streets filled with tourists milling about. I personally suggest if you stay here, ask to get dropped off around the "Fresco Higashiyama Yasui / スーパーフレスコ 東山安井店 " and simply walk up to your accommodations.

- Elissa (8/5): - Loved the location for being able to see a usually busy area when it was quieter. It felt like a secret hideaway. Was really grateful to have a couch, something that you don't realize you miss when travelling. Good shower and washing machine. Options for dinner were a bit tricky to find since most places cater to the day visitors, but we should have planned better. The house was a bit tired, but everything worked and it was comfortable. Note that the 'Den' is a tiny room that literally only just fits a futon in. OK, but worth noting if you want to use it as a bedroom.
- Consuelo (9/5): Great location, wonderful memories. - Can’t beat the location. Quiet yet u are just steps away from major attractions. It is a lovely old machiya house and while it has some of the smells u would expect from an old house, it was very clean, well kept and comfortable. The place gave you a feeling of how it might have been to live in old Japan. And despite the one thing you will read about in the next section, we would stay there again. Washing machine probably needs replacing sometime soon. While it did work, it couldn’t take even a small load with jeans. A medium load or 2 pairs of jeans done together with nothing else caused it to error and stop. We ended up doing very small loads and separating the jeans and doing each jean one at a time, which made it inconvenient when u are also trying to explore the area.
- Fannie (7/5): Had a lovely stay at an old but cosy inn. - Great location. Excellent service. No washroom on the second floor. The house is quite old.
- Jani (8/5): Mycket trevligt boende under några få dagar.
- Robert (7/5): - The location is unbelievably good literally 30 seconds from the main pagoda and minutes from the Kiyomizu Dera. We were informed that if we arrived to the property late that the key would be left in a lock box outside the property for us to access but upon arrival there was no key inside the lockbox and it was instead left inside the mailbox which we had no access to so we’re left waiting on the doorstep for quite some time trying to get through to staff for help which in turn wasn’t the easiest without calling capabilities because of low signal a very frustrating experience! Of not for my partner being able to retrieve them with a hanger from our suitcase we would have been on the doorstep even longer.
- Patricia (7/5): Live like a local in an interesting neighbourhood. - Great neighborhood; interesting alternative to hotel Two bedrooms were good for two couples but third bedroom was much too small to be used. Very limited support ( check in 10-4) .
- Aleksei (10/5): -
- Karen (9/5): The accommodation was lovely and in an excellent location. - Location was excellent. It was difficult to find where to collect the key. We got a taxi near to the accommodation as the area wasn’t suitable for taxis to drive down. When we got out of taxi it took about 30 minutes to find the property (a local man helped us but even he was having difficulty).
Clearer instructions need to be given as to where to collect the keys and a detailed map is needed to find the property.

- Roman (10/5): Central touristic location, Very clean. Good communication with hosts. Enjoyed every moment. -
- Sanjay (10/5): Perfect location and great Machiya experience, right in the centre of the most popular part of Kyoto. - Location was perfect. Was really nice to stay in a traditional Machiya.
- Warren (10/5): Brilliant spot, in walking distance to so much history. - The location was excellent.
- Ernie (9/5): Great stay in Kiyomizu Machiya Inn - The house was spacious and traditional feels make the stay great Wifi was slow and it is pretty expensive
- Kathlyn (10/5): - In the heart of the old town. Very traditional. Used the big tub several times. Wonderful!
- Nicolas (6/5): Perfect location, and quiet, private stay. - Excellent location! Could walk to bus station and some beautiful locations, sights and stores.
Was well fitted out with things you’d need for a stay. Lots of towels provided. Grocery store also a short walk away.
The washer/dryer facility was a life saver! Thank you.
Guest books were a great touch. There were a few places we felt the cleanliness wasn’t up to scratch.
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional - The location and property were wonderful. We enjoyed our stay very much and would stay here again. Just keep in mind that there are many many other tourists out and about on the main walking road. Having to go to their checkin counter outside of Kyoto train station to check-in. I almost overlooked this important detail and it would have been very inconvenient to have just shown up at the property and then forced to return to the train station area just to "check-in".
- Angela (8/5): Great stay! - Loved staying in this old Machiya and it is in a fantastic location. Loved staying in the heart of Gion by Yasaka Pagoda and so much more to explore especially beautiful at night or first thing in the morning. Western beds and pillows were a little hard.
- Hayden (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Traditionally beautiful in the heart of Gion. - So amazing to be right at the spiritual heart of Kyoto A bit of an effort to get to public transport other than buses. Unfortunately the site is packed with other tourists during the majority of the day. But staying in a converted Machiya inn was still an amazing experience.
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Herman (9/5): Excellent Stay in Great Location - Excellent communication and instructions. Historic townhouse in great condition and fantastic location. Quiet and complete privacy since you have the entire townhouse while being only steps away from major tourist areas. Really neat/charming area. Kitchen was fully equipped with plates, utensils, kettle, coffee maker etc as expected. We’d definitely be happy to stay again in a future trip. Sleeping quarters on 2nd floor with the only toilet on first floor. No problem, but not as convenient as having a toilet on same floor especially during the night.
- Garrett (10/5): - The property was clean and located in an excellent area. It had access to many local temples and shrines, as well as, dining options.
- Melanie (10/5): Fabulous location and home! - The location was fabulous!! Beautiful restored house that had so much charm. In the middle of the most beautiful and sort after area but in a quiet little lane way away from the bustle. The western style bed mattresses are very hard and can be hard to sleep on after a long day.
- Ya (8/5): Kyoto ideal area to staying - Location and management staff are incredibly helpful 2 floors maybe difficult for someone with mobility issues
- Chris (9/5): Wonderful! - Lovely home. Excellent location! Quiet - off main streets. Walking to many popular locations. Coffee nearby. Clean.
- Anna (8/5): Excellent location, quiet with a traditional feel. - Location and proximity was excellent, loved the traditional feel of the inn. Beds were extremely hard, property hard to find and needed information on rubbish disposal as we were a family of 5.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Perfect location in Gion. - Perfect location. Very clean. Just a little difficult to find ;)
Very friendly and professional check in staff.
…one minor improvement; maybe have some tea and coffee available in the Machiya for the amount of nights stayed.
- Christelle (10/5): Exceptional - This was the most amazing stay we experienced in Japan. Plenty of space, comfy beds and very warm! Better directions to the Inn would help. We missed the little alley way and walked in circles for about 30.mins.
- Santosh (8/5): Very good -
- Claire (9/5): Great stay in old style kyoto - location was amazing. The Old Style of the house was a great experience Some of the doors were very loud opening, was awkward to get to with large suitcases
- Jill (10/5): Exceptional - Great location , close to popular tourist locations
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location and very comfortable property with a really nice homely feel.
- Gina (10/5): - Right in the heart of Gion, we couldn’t ask for a better location. 5 -10 mins from Kiyomizu Dera. Lovely traditional home very comfy and an overall great experience
- Thanh (10/5): It was such a memorable visit in such a charming home. - It was a wonderful stay. The location was amazing. The traditional home was beautiful. The washer-dryer was a great amenity. The host was so kind and very responsive. Quite trivial but the wifi was slow.
- Heidi (9/5): Great for a family and to be in the oldest part of Kyoto - The location was superb, and the authentic Japanese home was perfect. Bedding was on the hard side
- Stephanie (8/5): Lovely place but door frames have low height - The location is wonderful, and the townhouse is beautiful, clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, the door frames were too low for my husband, who is 1.85m tall (6 feet), and he hit his head multiple times a day. That definitely decreased his and our satisfaction with the place, which is a pitty because the house was lovely otherwise.
- Charles (10/5): - We loved the Kiyomizu Machiya Inn. A Memorable stop on our family adventure. It is on a quiet side street in the middle of the famous Kiyomizu Dara area. There was plenty of Shopping / Dining a few yards from our door. As a photographer it allowed me to walk out our door late at night and photograph this amazing neighborhood after the many tourists had left.
- Luna (10/5): Exceptional - Location was great. It was kind of hidden in the touristy area so you were close to a lot of things without the crowds and noise If you're not familiar with the area the place can be slightly difficult to find. The photos did help a ton with this though.
- Jp (8/5): Very good -
- Nicolas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Connor (9/5): Superb -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional - The location of the property is perfect for a Kyoto get away. Beautiful surroundings

- Fria (9/5): Superb -
- Tony (10/5): Perfect base for immersing in old-school Kyoto - We had only had 2 days in Kyoto, and only the 1 night here... Fantastic experience.
All the pictures of old school Kyoto, that all the brochures have of cobbled streets, narrow lanes, pagodas, tea houses... This is smack bang in the middle of it all. Enough Western-ness that it's all easy, but the house still makes you feel like you're in old-school Kyoto. House was lovely, clean, comfortable. We walked a couple of minutes to up near the Park Hyatt and found about a thousand cabs. Gion is super easy to walk to. Nishiki market was a short drive away... Was it tricky to find? Sort of... Was that pretty much all our fault, I'd say so...
- Sianitawati (9/5): Superb - The location is in great places.. Just walk away from pagoda..
- Liz (9/5): Loved the location and the apartment. We would definitely stay there again if we were in Kyoto. - We loved the location and apartment. was such a lovely place to have as a base for 5 nights The washing machine wasn't the best and took a long time. Apart from that we loved everything about the apartment.
- Ruby (7/5): Ok, but not excellent - Close to templates Very difficult to find
- Evan (8/5): Very good -
- Nurul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stuart (8/5): Very good -
- Virginia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hilehito (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gwendolyn (10/5): Exceptional - Location. The property is just near the famous tourist destination in kyoto, yasaka pagoda.
Host is responsive and very helpful. They answer our requests and questions quickly Everything was perfect.
- Ryan (10/5): The location couldn’t be any better - The location was perfect and the house was charming as well as very well-maintained. The staff was very kind and helpful! I wish I could have stayed longer!
- Roland (9/5): A lovely stay in a traditional Japanese home. - The property is beautiful inside and out. It is in a gorgeous, historic neighborhood in Kyoto, some 50 meters away from a major religious landmark. Within easy walking distance there are shops, restaurants, shrines, and all manner of historic places to wander and explore, which could occupy a traveler for days on end. The interior is decorated in a modern rendition of traditional Japanese design, yet there are modern conveniences, including comfortable and reliable climate control, a relief during our recent stay in the sweltering Japanese summer. The hosts are very responsive and thoroughly professional. The nature of the neighborhood precludes exterior garbage cans, and we started to approach the limit of we could store in internal trash collection during our short stay, so some other means of managing trash collection would have been helpful. In addition, be aware that this is a very old house in a warm climate, so there will be the inevitable encounters with bugs. This is not a reflection on the excellent upkeep of the property, and more a reflection, I would like to believe, on the management's reluctance to use a lot of poisons to keep them away.
- Daltin (10/5): Amazing location and incredible old Japan charm. - The pillows were a bit too hard and thick. They could’ve been much softener or thinner.
- Laurie (9/5): Thank you Akemi and Trevor for a wonderful vacation! - An amazing location in a wonderfully historic Kyoto neighbourhood. Perfect for our family of 4.
- Kuo-chan (8/5): Culture rich place to stay. - Great location and culture rich place to stay. If your neighbors are night owl, you will hear everything in the rooms. If you arrive at night, it may take few minutes to figure out where the place is. I recommended the host add a video to show people how to get there.
- Anonymous (8/5): I admire the layout, amenities, location so much so I will stay again next year! - This feels like home! We are able to rest and settle in immediately. The location made it easy for us to reach to Kiyomizu Dera at 5:30am before opening hours so we were first to go in and able to enjoy the temple/park almost to ourselves. But despite this being located close to all the crowded / touristy areas of Kyoto, it is really quiet once inside the house. Close to the bus stops and combinis / grocery store.
I like that there is a washing/drying machine so I basically washed each night and they'll be mostly dry the following morning. Wifi is excellent and there is an apple TV I was able to login.
The host is so welcoming. Although she was not in Japan during our stay, she reached out to us several times during our stay, made us feel welcome and even recommended a few areas to visit for our kids. The following things are really minor compared to the things that I liked but I am sharing so it could be better! We are looking forward to staying again next year!
Apart from its unique location that makes it hard to access for taxi drivers, I think the cleaning in between stays could be done a bit better. It was not as clean as I would like, there is dust accumulating under the beds, one trash can is not fully emptied (there was an empty water bottle) and one of the drawers had a birthday candle (for a 5 year old). In the entrance where you take off your shoes, we saw a couple of dead roaches, but it's not a big deal I was able to sweep them away outside.
I wish there is enough shampoo/conditioner/bath soap/bathroom tissue provided based on the number of people staying + length of stay. I did reach out to the host about this and I was told it will be refilled but no one came, so we have to buy some which isn't a big deal.
- Chase (9/5): Superb -
- Bethany (7/5): Had a wonderful time. Enjoyed our chance to live in a Japanese house. - The location was brilliant. The futon on tatami was very comfortable. Bathroom and kitchen very clean. The kitchen had everything we needed. We actually cooked! It was lovely to have some space. The house was quite cold and difficult to heat, but I understand this is how this type of house has been built. The beds were uncomfortable.
- Mickaël (8/5): Very good - The location was nice to visit the Gion area, close to Kiyomizu dera. It was nice to stay in a traditional house. Good equipment, including a ful kitchen and a washing machine. The rooms were smaller then they looked on the photos. Mattresses were really hard. It got quite cold and the AC in one of the rooms didn't heat up.
- André (8/5): 4 days with the family in a beautiful area - the location was fantastic, the beds were comfortable and the host very helpful with tips. Not much, standards were ok, but far from luxurious.
- Wies (10/5): Exceptional - The location of this stay is truly perfect. It's just around the corner from the Hokan-ji pagoda. It is in a small street away from the main street so there are no crowds coming by the house. It was very clean and the house had a very traditional feel but had all the modern luxury. It is a bit hidden away but with the instructions you get it is easy to find.
- Amy (10/5): - Wow!! What a special place. Our favorite accommodation on our trip to Japan. The small streets and alleys are so charming and being next to the Yasaka Pagoda is incredible. Head out early in the morning before the crowds and it's magical to walk around, especially with the cherry blossoms blooming. The alley way to walk down to house is small and it feels like a secret place to stay! Perfect location to explore Gion area and head up to Kiyomizu-dera. We were only in Kyoto for one night and so happy we stayed here. The house itself is traditional and beautiful. The futons on the floor were incredibly comfy. It felt a bit chilly inside as we were there in March, but we cranked the heaters in the rooms and it was comfortable. It was great to have the slippers there to keep feet warm. Highly recommend!
- Baltazar (10/5): Exceptional - Great Host. Akemi took care of us very well during our stay. She kept in touch everyday and gave us tips on where we should go.
Great location. Beautiful area.
Complete amenities. The place is very cozy and has big rooms.
- Summer (10/5): Exceptional - Great location!

- Jeff (9/5): Awesome location and a quiet refuge in one of Kyoto's historic and iconic areas. - Location, location, location. What a treat to find such a quiet machiya off such a popular and historic area. It really felt like a refuge after being around so many crowds throughout Kyoto. Wonderful to walk the streets early in the morning or late in the day when things are quiet. The place really feels like someone's home more than a hotel property. The Fresco down the way was quite handy for provisioning. The host provided very comprehensive instructions and seemed readily available via email. There are a few quirks that go with staying in someone's personal property, the washer/dryer while handy to have though somewhat complicated to operate. The unique location did make it a bit tricky for cab drivers when trying to figure how to drop you off.
