Guest Reviews
- Jennifer (10/5): A lovely, well eqipped house in a quiet and convenient location. - Roomy and very comfortable for 2 adults who required separate rooms.Well equipped so we could cook for ourselves at times. One of us was coeliac and one vegetarian so not always easy to eat out.
- Brett (10/5): - The beautifully appointed house with plenty of room, comfortable bedding and clean amenities. We would have stayed longer if we could. Perhaps the location a little closer to a station, but it wasn't an issue.
- Sharon (10/5): Great experience, beautiful little house. Supermarket walking distance, main town 10mins. Temples, Gion district, Kyoto - Beautiful traditional house. Quiet street but close to town. My teen daughter loved it. There wasn’t anything that I didn’t like but I left my case downstairs and got ready there rather than getting it up the stairs.
After walking around for 8 hrs a day, you tend to look forward to laying down at the end of the day.
The TV area is a traditional seated eating. So nowhere to put your feet up and relax. I would watch Netflix in bed, more comfortable.
The second bedroom felt like a spooky attic but my teen loved it.
- Magdalene (8/5): The complete Japanese experience in Kyoto. - This is my second machiya stay in Kyoto. We love the experience. Nothing
- Stephen (10/5): Beautiful house, in a lovely area. - We stayed here on our honeymoon and used it as a "base" for going on day trips to Nara, Osaka & Hiroshima alongside enjoying Kyoto itself. This was probably our favourite stay of the trip. It was just so relaxing and homey with the additional space to just chill and eat in the evening after a very busy day. Obviously clean, well located for transprot links and activites such as tea ceramony's & chopstick making which we did during our stay. We really do want to go back, and if you do book here, it is just as beautiful as it looks in the pictures. Leaving, we want to visit again.
- Hisako (10/5): Atmospheric, wonderful stay. - I loved how thoughtfully laid out and stocked the house was. One could feel that the host really cared about the experience of the guests. The location was absolutely perfect, as we wanted to stay away from the crowd. The charming alley the house was on gave us the Kyoto-feel immediately. I would definitely stay again. There is also a public bath house (sento) just a two minute walk away, along the same street. We went to it everyday. Perfect for soaking your tired legs and feet after exploring the sites all day. Liked everything.
- Sophie (8/5): Le charme du vieux Kyoto - La situation en ville, le confort, le charme.
- Virginia (9/5): Traditional home for an authentic experience - It was lovely to stay in a traditional Japanese house. The beds were comfy, the air con was reliable and the home had everything we needed. The bus stops and local train station were less than 10 mins away. It had a lovely little garden. Nothing
- Mee (9/5): Special experience for living in machiya-an old town house - All good If have curtains in the living room will be much better
- Lisa (9/5): Beautiful home in a quiet neighborhood a little off the beaten path. - Very beautiful home in a quiet area. There is a full kitchen, a small garden to look out into, and a handful of windows on the second floor that open inward into the home, allowing you to look down into the kitchen. My siblings and I enjoyed gathering together in the living room with sake and snacks at the end of the day. It's a bit tricky getting large luggage up the small, winding staircase, so I opted to keep mine in the foyer downstairs. We did have a little trouble with the washing machine - the door tends to spring open and bang the wall, which stressed me out quite a bit. You've really got to keep your volume down, as all of these historical homes share walls with each other.
- Matisse (10/5): Exceptional - The accommodation perfectly matches what we imagined. Very confortable for resting and well positioned for Moving around !
- Leahbarfi_ (10/5): A beautiful traditional escape in the heart of the city. - It was such a beautiful little escape from the bustle of the city. Perfectly maintained and restored to show the heritage of the Machiya properties. We had staff turn up at the property as we were getting ready to leave at 10:35am despite checkout being by 11am. Not a massive factor but we were hesitant at first to open the door as they mentioned in the guestbook that sometimes people knock by the property for sales so we were unsure initially if staff or sales.
- Gina (6/5): nice -not for anyone with mobility issues at all - Nice location, lovely home -the stairs are very tight. I have a bad ankle and was pretty worried I would fall and die.
- Sal (10/5): - We stayed in Tokyo and Osaka prior to our stay here in Kyoto at Maeniiya Machiya Inn. Maeniiya Machiya Inn is a definite great place to stay and close to everything.
Akemi (property owner) is a wealth of knowledge and gave a lot of tips and recommendations. Be sure to visit Sukemasa for dinner if you like Gyoza. It is very close and yummy for 1000yen!
Thank you again for a wonderful stay.
Sal and family
- Su (8/5): Very good -
- Lucy (10/5): - What an exquisite property this is! It was such a special experience to be able to walk down our very own Kyoto alley to our home away from home. The hosts were very communicative and spoke great English when we came to check in. Loved our stay!
- Selina (7/5): Good - Authentic experience and everything was included. Great location as well. I wouldn’t suggest that this is suitable for a family with young children. Within minutes of our arrival, the neighbour came to the door and said we were too loud. Sometimes children are not quiet and this made our time a bit uncomfortable as we worried we would upset the neighbour. Also- when I booked on line check out was at 11am but we were told 10am.
- Mark (8/5): - Travelled with two teenage boys enjoyed the space very quiet living in a local neighbourhood good location to eateries. Only issue was the elderly neighbour who complained to us within the first 5 mins of arriving that we were too loud walking up and down the apartment stairs which was not great but overall was good location, good facilities very clean
- Luna (10/5): Lovely traditional house - What a beautiful house! So many facilities with a fully functional kitchen if you wanna cook yourself, but otherwise theres lots of restaurants nearby.
Kyoto downtown was 20 minutes walk away but the house is in a very quiet neighborhood.
Loved the little garden and the little balcony, and the aircondition saved us during the hot Kyoto summer nights and the beds were comfortable.
There is a kotatsu table for cold evenings, small bathtub and washing machine, just to name a few of the facilities.
If you have a car while visiting this place, there wont be parking at the residence but multiple mini car parks in the area - just to note :) we can definitely recommend the drive to Ine, 2-3 hours away from Kyoto! Nothing to note
- Fernando (10/5): Exceptional - Traditional house with modern facilities in a quiet location
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Evelyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eduardo (8/5): Homey stay - Nice traditional house with very comfortable room and tatamis. Great dinning room and comfortable table. Very good communication with house owner who was very helpful answering kind. The neighbor! We had 2 kids. It’s impossible to be completely quiet all the time. This is a very quiet neighborhood. Doesn’t allow for any kind of noise.
- Melinda (10/5): - Excellent place. Highly recommended
- Alex (9/5): , - A bit of a mission when you don't know the place, but taxi drivers usually have your back
- Nathan (9/5): Superb -
- Bethan (10/5): It was a privilege to stay in this beautiful, traditional house. - We felt very privileged to be able to stay in this beautiful, traditional Japanese house. The house is conveniently located but far enough away from the very busy tourist areas that it was quiet at night and offered the chance to explore some traditional streets without all the crowds.
The house is comfortable and well-equipped and Akemi was a very friendly and helpful host who provided lots of information and recommendations both before and during our stay.
- Deborah (9/5): Superb -
- Imogen (8/5): Very good - The charm and location
- Astrid (10/5): Charming townhouse for something more traditional! - Very charming inn with plenty of space to relax. It’s located a couple of blocks from the Main Street and walking distance to the Nishiki market and river. Loved the sleeping arrangement and sunken dining area. Air conditioning in bedrooms and living area which was very much needed given the heat of August days and nights! Was really happy to be able to do a load of washing as this was the half way mark of our trip. Didn’t use any of the kitchen amenities but looks like it’s all there!! Nothing !
- Kevin (10/5): - We travelled as a family of 4 with 2 young adults. They thought it was real cool place. It had authentic character and we liked the tatami rooms and mats. We also liked that we had the place to ourselves. It felt liked we lived in Kyoto and walked in the back alley to our home. It was great to have more space than a hotel room. Good quiet central location and close to transit and those popular convenience stores. The experience here was memorable as much as sight seeing in Kyoto. Enjoyable!
- Liz (10/5): A real traditional Japanese experience - A home away from home! - Wow, what a great find!! This was the best place we stayed in Japan. We had a wonderful stay at Maeniiya Machiya Inn, a true Japanese experience, perfectly located a few blocks from Shijo Dori and two subway stops from the main Kyoto train station.
The house is spacious and has all the modern amenities with fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer machine, and two bicycles, etc. The traditional futon beds were extremely comfortable! The cozy tatami living room and the attached tsuboniwa garden were lovely. It is furnished and decorated with great taste and comfortably accommodates 4 people.
The street is quiet and charming with its old world feeling. The hosts and their management staff were always available when you have questions or requests. This is an ideal base for a stay in Kyoto and beats a hotel hands down. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, it was so nice to come back to such a comfortable home. The location was fantastic and house wonderful. This is definitely a place we would recommend and be thrilled to stay again! That we couldn't stay longer.
- Martin (10/5): Nice stay with my family in traditional Japanese house in the middle of Kyoto - Very nice traditional Japanese house in quiet place in the middle of Kyoto. Perfect for a family event with sightseeing trips in Kyoto area.
- Batertxe (5/5): Globally disappointing. Not good value for money. - Stylish house. Comfortable beds. Good location. The house was not perfectly clean. We had the feeling that a superficial cleaning had been done (sticky table, dust, traces of humidity). The last two days almost no hot water (5 minutes and then, nothing).
