Guest Reviews
- Christophe (2/5): - Awful hotel, not very clean and shocking attitude to guests. Convenient for an early ferry from Caen but obvious from the state of the hotel and attitude of staff that they were not interested or expecting guests to ever come back.
- G (2/5): Grave mistake. - I have never in all my years of traveling stopped at worse Hotel than this one. The room is extremely dirty. The room and toilet smell, is like a sewer. The shower head was broken they attempted to repair it (did not) said they would come back (did not). The reception is occasionally manned so often when you need somebody there is no one there. Most thing are broken, no handles on wardrobe doors, no heating. The place is a disaster and unfit for human occupancy. Do not go anywhere near the place.
- Ian (10/5): Great position for ferry travel! - Good hotel in great position for the ferry terminal. Stayed many times and always found the staff in both the reception and restaurant to be friendly and helpful. Great choice of food always well prepared.
- Roger (6/5): - OK for a one night stay when you get off the ferry, as it's very close. However, the bar closes at 10pm, which isn't good timing, as that's when the ferry arrives! Rooms are small, clean and basic. Good breakfast buffet with local products.
- Michael (4/5): - room was very small and there was no elevator, dining room staff were not very friendly, room furniture was old and dated, shower was small and awkward to get in and out, not very clean.
- Steven (6/5): - The rooms need an update , the bathroom was tired and had a strong unpleasant smell as no plug in the sink and the shower was difficult to use . I wouldn’t recommend.
But on the plus side it is pet friendly and the restaurant was very good .
- Patricia (6/5): - A budget hotel close to the ferry. Very dated; small rooms and strange sewage smell in bathroom. Excellent location for the ferry to Portsmouth. Breakfast very good.
- Elaine (4/5): Good position main benefit. - Limited reception time. Bathroom smelt dank. Very high step to shower. Main benefit was close proximity to ferry.
- Kate (10/5): - This hotel is a budget friendly and convenient option for access to the ferry terminal. The rooms are basic but clean. The beds very comfortable and shower powerful! We were welcomed by very friendly and helpful staff. The bar and restaurant had a great choice and was well priced. Again staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Neil (4/5): - Over-priced. Very basic accommodation. Bedroom dirty - had not been cleaned under the bed. Bathroom floor sticky. Cockroach in bathroom and on landing. Apart from check-in (taking payment) no contact with staff.
- Joanna (10/5): - I do stay here 3 times a year but it’s busy. I don’t expect to be remembered but I was and that is welcoming. Particularly good as a solo traveller. I feel looked after in le phare. Plus I enjoy the atmosphere and location when having supper. The rooms are very clean.
- Stephen (10/5): Great stay - Really great place to stop off and local for the ferry. Highly recommended
Super breakfast
- Pauline (8/5): - Very comfortable and so close to ferry. Would definitely return
- Clare (10/5): - Perfect place to stay when arriving on the evening ferry. Super convenient. Helpful staff. Comfortable room. Great breakfast.
- Arthur (8/5): - All male staff some of whom were very brusque and grumpy.
- Charlotte (8/5): - We stayed the night before a ferry crossing. Very convenient location, clean room and had everything you needed for a short stay. Not luxury, but perfectly sufficient
- g j (10/5): Excellent position for ferry - Excellent position for ferry, good variety of food and drink, friendly staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value and pleasant - Clean with efficient pleasant staff. Very comfortable beds, mattresses seemed quite new. Good shower pressure. Nice to find a family room for 2 adults and 2 children. Good wifi. On the basic side and the room carpet was very tired but a fine place to stay.
- john (6/5): Super location for ferry, but several drawbacks. - Location spot on for overnighting before ferry crossing. Restaurant pretty good too. But our double room was comparatively small, as was the bed, with little room to move around the bed or room. No kettle, tea or coffee, nor water. Bathroom ok. Overall our 100 euro cost was, by normal French standards, well over the top.
- emma (8/5): Ferry port accommodation - Great location for the ferry port, basic room facilities but clean and comfortable beds
Amazing breakfast and friendly staff.. a Good one night stop over.
- David (10/5): - The receptionist on Saturday night was brilliant.
I wanted to make another reservation for August and immediately he took care of it
Food in the reception is very good and the beer ( Afligem) tasted even better after arriving from Tours. Very close to the D day beaches and Pegasus bridge
- Brian (10/5): - It's 5 minutes from Ferry terminal. Clean, has everything you want. Breakfast extra cost but very good. For early Ferry crossings its absolutely perfect.
- Fiona (8/5): - Staff were very friendly and helpful. We ate at the restaurant and food was lovely.
The only minor point to mention, is that the bedrooms were a little cold and the radiators didn’t seem to be working.
- ANTHONY (6/5): - Restaurant in the past was great but on this visit service was slow mussels very poor. Will try another hotel next time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good for overnight stopover close to all amenities.
- Chris (10/5): - We use this property as it is convenient for the ferry terminal. There are also restaurants nearby, so there is a choice for the evening. Polite, efficient check in and room is perfectly adequate for what we want and what we have paid.
- Kenneth (8/5): Overnight at Ouistreham - Ideal for an overnight stay before catching ferry next morning
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fine for a night, but dated. - We booked a room for one night. It is a quiet place to get some rest. The room was small and older. The bathroom was small, with a tiny shower and a soap dispenser near the sink for all washing purposes. We were assigned a top floor (attic) room with pitched ceilings, so one must watch where they are walking at night. The bed was comfortable, but rather small for two people. Altogether, the place wasn't particularly pretty, but a decent place to rest. The property offers a buffet breakfast for €9 per person, which we did not avail ourselves of.
- Steve (10/5): - Friendly staff. Great location for visiting D day locations. Restaurant perfect with great food. Our first visit to France and hit gold with this hotel.
- Brian (10/5): - This property I used for convenience for Ferry terminal. 5 minutes away. Rooms have everything you need. Bar restaurant seating outside. Staff speak English. Breakfast additional cost. Meals very good with fast service. Definitely use this hotel for future visits.
- Stephen (10/5): Real France - Great choice for the ferry
- Brian (8/5): - 5 minutes from Ferry terminal. Breakfast and evening meal at additional cost. Perfect location. Will use again for Future bookings.
- Steven (10/5): 3rd time stay here - Clean basic rooms, excellent restaurant. Superb for stayover after or before ferry crossing.
- Christopher (2/5): - Old,falling apart,musty smelling. No lift
- Robert (4/5): - No lift only narrow stairs. WiFi only available in the reception area at times. No hot water available on three separate occasions. Worst continental breakfast ever had. Constantly asking for breakfast items to be replenished. No safe, fridge or tea or coffee facilities in the room. A certain member of staff extremely rude and abrupt [ others very good ].
- ian (10/5): A great location! - Stayed here several times for one night durations only but it is convenient, clean and friendly. The restaurant has a great choice and the food is great.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Stayed twice - on ferry in and out trips
Reception service the worst I have ever had in France
On first trip the hotel car parking was closed off due to local fete. We went to reception to ask what to do and got Gallic shrug - it will be opened when the fireworks end. Went back later and still nothing except same shrug. After a local policeman helped us get into the park and we finally got in at just before 11.30. Dumped bags and when down to get a drink and waiter sad at 11.31 "closed" even though they were still serving existing guests. Pointed out we were residents and got "Fermee" with no hint of help.
As we were booked to go back on return I thought we would give them another chance. Car Park was full - asked were to go and got a point to municipal park and same shrug. He did however recognise the booking and got key. The phone then rang and he spent a considerable time negociating a new booking leaving me standing there.
There is no lift (we knew that) but no effort or offer to help with luggage up steep stairs even though I was walking with 2 sticks.
AVOID HOTEL DU PHARE AT ALL COSTS
- Briony (8/5): Wonderful, great for late night ferry arrivals - We checked in just as the clock turned 11pm (it took all that time to get through passport control off the ferry), and thankfully the reception was still open. The man who welcomed us spoke good enough English, but allowed me to speak bad French to him!
We parked in the municipal carpark opposite, which is free at that time of night, until 9am.
We had to pay visitor's tax for all our party (not just the adults, as Hotels.com states), but it's only 90 cents per person.
Our triple room was up two flights of quite easy stairs, and was delightful. Because of the layout, we had quite a lot of space for our bags. The room was presented beautifully, and was really clean and welcoming. It was double aspect, and had views of the lighthouse, ferry, and canal; despite this, it wasn't noisy in the morning.
The shower room was very small, so this wouldn't be the room for you if you are of a larger size!
We didn't eat at the hotel, as I favour the boulangerie in town for a first day's breakfast.
We enjoyed our stay, and I'd absolutely stay here again in the future. I'd like to stay for longer.
- steve (10/5): - Hotel right in the port with parking directly outside / perfect for an early ferry
- Dennis (6/5): - Property was convenient for ferry. Rooms were clean and linen fresh. Facilities were dated and could do with a refresh. Relatively quiet at back of hotel despite its prominent position between two roads.
- Lucy (10/5): - Very friendly, helpful staff. Excellent location for ferry port.
- Sheila (6/5): - Hotel was close to the port.
WiFi didn’t work in one of our rooms. Facilities very basic. Very noisy room overlooking the bar area, with people talking until the early hours.
Restaurant food was excellent.
- Ian (6/5): - Good access to all of Ouistreham
- Elizabeth Ann (10/5): - Very reasonable price and near ferry terminal. Free parking.
- Susannah (6/5): Hotel fine but car was broken into outside - Hotel fine but car was broken into outside the hotel
- David (6/5): - Hotel good ,parking only free for one hour (with hotel permit )which rq updating every hour till 7 pm then free till 9am, then updating every hour, restaurant staff rq training (booked table at 3pm to eat at 8 pm told full ,many French people came in after me and got table.
- Linda (10/5): We’ll placed for the beaches - Great hotel and well placed for touring many of the D-Day sites.
- Jean (10/5): - Best hotel in area - close to ferry terminal, easy parking, good food and service, comfortable rooms, reasonable price. Have stayed in other much more expensive hotels in area and found that their service and food was poor.
- ian (10/5): Convenient and Friendly - Always a good experience and spend several overnight stays here each year. Conveniently located for the ferry terminal.
- Roger (2/5): - A dangerous shower. Controls broken. Clearly damp with plaster peeling off the walls. A window that is broken and cannot be closed so you have to endure the noise of the HGVs heading to the Port. Horrible.
- Robert (10/5): Perfect for ferry - Perfect place for ferry and very friendly
- Neil (8/5): - Good, simple rooms, friendly staff, decent food, literally 2 minutes from the ferry port. Recommended for an overnight stay before the early ferry.
- William (2/5): - Dreadful service
I chose the hotel for its convenience and the fact that twenty years ago I enjoyed a good meal there. How times have changed. The owner was surly and unpleasant. We were not made to feel welcome. The service at the bars was awful and we chose not to use ut after the first twenty-minute wait for someone to ask us what we wanted. The room was big enough but the facilities were primitive. A paper cup in the bathroom and just a bar of soap and a sachet of shampoo allied to the kind of toilet paper we used in the 1960s was not good. There were no coffee-making facilities. The rooms were up a steep and narrow staircase and as the doors all slammed it made for a noisy awakening at 6 am. Not what you want on a holiday. The room was not made up for 36 hours after we arrived. This was my worst hotel experience in the last twenty-five years. There are other hotels which are just as convenient in Outistreham. I would read the reviews for them and then decide.
- Ian (10/5): Lovely hotel - We arrived late but the staff were waiting to welcome us. Breakfast was excellent. The Bar was reasonably priced. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The location was excellent ideally placed for the ferry port.
- KEVIN (6/5): 1970s not so chic… - Great staff. Hotel rooms tired and desperately in need of updating. Food poor ☹️
Keep a close eye on your car if parking outside.
- David (8/5): - Room decor was a little dated and could do with usb charging ports added. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The food was wonderful and very reasonably priced
- marylyn (10/5): very good indeed - The hotel was very close to the ferry, staff were friendly, breakfast was worthwhile - very fresh croissants. Just to say that there are quite a lot of steep stairs if you have a large suitcase but we didnt so not a problem
- ian (8/5): Lovey hotel in great position - The hotel is ideally situated and we use it often for an overnight stay before travelling back to the UK on the nearby ferry service.
- Robert (6/5): - It’s 2* hotel and in that respect it’s just that, but fine. Comfortable bed.
Fantastic location next to the Port but a fair bit of port traffic during the night.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A friendly little hotel one minute from the ferry. We got in late and they were kind and helpful. We left too early to have breakfast!
- Barbara (10/5): - The hotel and restaurant were excellent. The room was small but clean and as requested we were allocated a room on the first floor near the stairs. However, as a warning to future guests this is an area where there are a lot of immigrant young men who spent most of the night tryhing to break into cars particularly UK cars. People should not leave any valuable in cars and should be aware of this problem. Police presence but not all the time. Do not let you put off staying here but just be aware.
- Christine Elizabeth (10/5): - W
Excellent location for a one night stay before catching the ferry. Restaurant available. Reception friendly and efficient. Room adequate for short stay, very clean and one of the first we’ve stayed in for a while where everything worked !
- Joan (10/5): - Perfect for getting on the Ferry. Dated room but clean and staff were lovely
- Graham (8/5): - Excellent restaurant and the lightest and best bread ever for breakfast !
- Mike (10/5): - Really friendly welcome and pleasant restaurant and bar. Rooms a little small.
- TIMOTHY (10/5): Love it. - As always, staff extremely professional and helpful, room clean and comfortable, food great quality at a very good price.
- Sylvie (8/5): - A good value for money basic accommodation. Room decor was dated but clean and comfortable enough. A perfect stay overnight before our early ferry next day. We also had dinner there which was very nice.
- RACHAEL (8/5): Great service - Great service when we arrived late in the evening. Good breakfast.
- alec (10/5): - Staff were very attentive, the restaurant was very good & food excellent.
- James E (6/5): Barely adequate. - Clean room, and comfortable bed. Water so soft it was virtually impossible to rinse off. No left-luggage room, which made sightseeing very inconvenient.
- David (8/5): - The hotel and restaurant is only about 300m from the ferry terminal. It has a very good restaurant that has a wide range of options. The rooms are adequate but very dated and in need of some work. The staff are very helpful and friendly and there is plenty of parking either directly outside or just across the road.
- Craig (8/5): Basis but good value. - We stayed at this hotel for one night prior to our early ferry home the following morning and I’m guessing this was the case for most if not all the other guests. The hotel is located literally straight across from the ferry terminal and would take minutes to get to check in. We used the car park opposite Hotel Du Phare and it cost less than €3 for overnight parking. The staff were friendly and helpful on checking in and the rooms were basis but adequate for what we needed. We had drinks in the hotel bar in the outside seating area and after a short walk around town decided to eat back at the hotel restaurant and again the staff and food were/was very good.
- Jeffrey (10/5): Travellers Rest - Just an overnight stay after getting off the ferry, so convenient, great nights sleep before continuing our journey South.
- Geoff (8/5): Good place to stay/eat before catching the ferry - We stayed here the night before catching the ferry home as you can see the ship from the front of the hotel. Dinner was excellent with a good choice (and not all come with frites!) and well cooked. Excellent, strong, local Normandy beer also available. Friendly staff, some with very good English. Rooms are quite basic but fine for an overnight stay although the carpet in ours could have done with a clean. No private off street parking but limited free parking on-street at the front. This requires a blue disc (supplied by the hotel) and is time limited, although the disc is not required after 19:00. The night we stayed there was a karaoke session which all the French, British and Dutch diners joined in.
- Gillian (10/5): - The property was clean, the staff friendly, food of a good standard and very convenient for the early morning ferry.
- Nigel (6/5): - Friendly staff and convenient location
- Andrew (10/5): - Really friendly check in despite late ferry arrival. Very comfortable room. Allow dogs to stay
- Laura (8/5): - Friendly welcome, clean room with good facilities.
Convenient for port and will use again 👍
- Clare (8/5): - Very friendly welcome and felt valued as a guest.
- Simon (8/5): - The ferry was late so I arrived after the normal check-in time but received a very nice welcome.
- Sylvia (10/5): - Great position to catch the early morning ferry to Portsmouth.
Rooms are a bit tired but clean.
- Sheila (8/5): - We arrived late from the Portsmouth ferry and the restaurant was closing so can’t rate the food but Axel, the manager was very helpful and accommodating and offered to rustle us up some food if we hadn’t eaten. Rooms are traditional and basic but clean and comfortable. Breakfast was continental only but excellent quality bread and croissant. Parking in front of the hotel is free until 9.00 am but Axel introduced us to the blue disque parking system which will be very useful. An excellent stopover in a traditional hotel used by locals as well as tourists.
- Annie (8/5): - Excellent cleanliness and friendly service.
The staircase is particularly difficult for older people.
- Joy (10/5): - Great location! Great staff!
- John Stewart (8/5): - Restricted seating in bar area
- Ian (8/5): - Very convenient for car ferry to Portsmouth. Rooms adequate . Baths should be non slip. Friendly staff. Restaurant service fair. Must have changed the chef. Fish and chips microwaved . Generally OK
- sharon (6/5): - Very close to ferry terminal with selection of restaurants around.
Staff very friendly and had excellent dinner.
Bedroom small and old fashioned but adequate for ferry stopover and was priced accordingly.
Bathroom was very disappointing. Toilet had noisy macerator which spurted water into sink. Shower was raised and door did not open fully as sink too close. Made leaving shower a risky manoeuvre especially as shower floor slippy
- Mark (10/5): Great hotel close to the ferry terminal and bus - Great hotel very close to the ferry terminal. Just a ten minute walk to the main shopping area and seafront. Bus stop right outside for express bus into Caen Town Center. Staff were really friendly and helpful. May be worth bringing extra toiletries as was only supplied one small pack a day. Would certainly stay here again!
- Sue (10/5): - Very clean. Bed not ultra comfortable. Well worth the money. Extremely convenient for the ferry!
- Simon (10/5): - Very clean hotel with helpful friendly staff
Great location for the ferry to and from France
- David (6/5): very disappointed - Nice smile and welcome on reception, BUT the room was very small, Dirty, shower head was loose and not easy to use , and shower would not drain as fast as the water cam out the tap.
- Avril (8/5): Overnight in Ouistreham - Excellent service. Bar and restaurant great. Bed and pillows very comfortable. Room needs to be brought up to same standard as the restaurant area. The bathroom had really bad repairs done. The room obviously hadn't been decorated or updated in many years.
- Susan (10/5): Perfect for travel, and friendly - Easy to find, comfortable and near ferry port. Great restaurant menu
- JG (10/5): Ideal stopover for ferry - Nice stay, very clean & so nice to have a room with a view of the port. A very pleasant restaurant with a good menu.
Brilliant to have on site parking even with municipal car park close by. Did not experience breakfast because we did not know what time it started.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good, convenient and clean. - We received a very friendly welcome despite arriving late due to delays in passport control coming off the ferry. The room was basic but comfortable and clean. This is a good and convenient hotel for the ferry.
- Jennifer (10/5): Great management. - Great service from Axel. My car broke down on the way, so I didn't stay, but Axel was great when I spoke to him..very caring and understanding. I shall rebook another time soon.
- Harry (8/5): Short stopover - Booked this like 90% of UK guests. Couldn't take the breakfast as we were on the early ferry. Receptionist was really good and spoke perfect English. Ate in the restaurant, very friendly, reasonably priced and good was very good, catered for my gluten- free, non dairy and non meat companion. Staff were really good and great for our 4-legged friend. Only slightly disappointed by our room, it was fine but really needs a bit of modernisation, bed was comfortable, facilities OK. Really convenient for the ferry. We had had problems with immigrants in the local area before BUT saw none during this stop and the security at the hotel was good.
- Alain (2/5): - Horrible… absolutely not protected for sound…stairs, walking in corridors, next door neighbor….arrival and departure at anytime during night….
Don’t stay here if you wish to sleep.
- Viva (2/5): unnecceary fire alarm - the fire warning sounded at . 3 am and everybody got down stairs. the manager was nowhere to be found or the source of the fire . A french guest phoned the fird brigade and 2 other English guests went out side to find out if the manager was any where on site,He was sound asleep in his appartment The alarm does not sound in his appartement Viva Vyse
- Robin (10/5): - Rooms need a make over....a little dated now...but good!
Restaurant is so good with a good menu and great staff!
