- alexiwright (8/5): SOPHY losing it's shine? - I love the SOPHY hotel. It's close to the University of Chicago, has a lovely vibe, and friendly staff. I've stayed there several times, but this last time it was severely understaffed. I was hoping to get breakfast--which does not open until 7:30--and no one showed up until 7:50 am. Then there was one server for a 10-15 guests who had all been patiently waiting for 20 minutes. I tried to order room service the next day, but no one ever answered the phone. There aren't a ton of fabulous food places around the hotel, so this was more of a problem then it might have been elsewhere.

The afternoon drink, the restaurant, the record player with one record in the room. I get it, but it wasn’t for me. It’s almost so cool that it forgets to be practical.

We were doing a tour of UChicago so this was the perfect location. So many food options locally as well. The staff were very welcoming and spoke everytime we entered and left. - DavLewis (2/5): Unprofessional, Poor Customer Service and Poor follow through from Leadership. - I originally posted my complaint on November 223, 2025: Sophy Hotel Chicago (November 20-23, 2026) 11:08 AM- stopped by the front desk to discuss the option of GM getting a late checkout due to my flight being at 4 pm. I wasn’t aware that I had passed the 11 am checkout window and assumed it was at 12 pm. The front desk manager, Kameron, was extremely rude in her response suggesting I should have already checked out and that should would have another front desk worker let me in”. I shared that I was unaware of the 11 am checkout time. She replied in a sarcastic manner with a smirk on her face”well let you in your room to pack and shower but you have to be out by 11:30 am” as if she’s doing me as a paying repeat customer, a favor. I told her that I didn’t appreciate the sarcasm and the rudeness especially as someone who works in hospitality and holds a manager position at a property such as the Sophy hotel. In addition to the front desk issue, I then received a call around 11:30 from a male employee threatening to charge me an additional fee if I was not checked out by 11:45 am. Before this point I stayed in this hotel due to the exceptional service that I’ve received. My experienced today was unpleasant, unprofessional, and inexcusable. This is a direct reflection on the leadership of this hotel and brand. Update: I emailed (November 23, 2025)the GM, Michael Falkenstein, and Director of Sales, Sandi Robinson. I received an email requesting a phone call from Mr. Falkenstein. I shared my contact information and spoke to Mr. Falkenstein via phone on 11/25/25. He started the conversation off attempting to dismiss experience by suggesting that the employee,Kameron, couldn’t display racism, bias, or discriminatory actions due to the fact that her partner is Black. I appalled and offended as he clearly doesn’t understand how racism shows up. We eventually came to the agreement that my complaint was vapor and that no guest should be treated unprofessionally. He shared that the employee would no longer be working at the property as well as he agreed to provide me compensation for a portion of my stay as well as ensure I received a full refund for a double booking. He also asked that I contact him on my next visit as he’d offer special rates or discounts. I agreed to remove my original post here as a curtsey. As of today, I only received a half day refund, never got refund from the Sophy on my double booked stay, and received no response of follow up from Michael when I’ve reached out both phone and email.

- Emstyler (10/5): Hyde Park Staycation! - What an exceptional hotel experience! My partner and I are Chicago locals who take a "staycation" every year and this was easily one of the best yet! Great location, the vibes in the lobby were on point (and so were the refreshments), the rooms were stunning and very clean, and the service was on another level! Everything was spotless, and every single person—from the front desk to the servers—was kind, present, and excellent at what they do. The food was incredible. And Sam, the manager, was completely on point the entire time. It’s a fantastic location! The rooms are clean and comfortable with complimentary coffee. We got a super cool deal on value but highly worth it and they even have a hype cocktail space downstairs and clean fitness center!! Expected city sounds but it was actually quiet and peaceful sleep in room. 10/10. Would absolutely recommend.

The General Manager, Michael Falkenstein, was exceptionally accommodating and compassionate throughout the process. My mother shared that the hotel was beautiful, impeccably clean, and that the staff conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism. We are truly grateful for the care and support provided during such a challenging situation and will return for future “staycation”.

In additional to being professional and courteous, they addressed my every need expeditiously; and I tend to have a lot of them. One in particular was when my rental car would not start, so the front desk clerk made multiple calls and contacts to aid me with my troubles. One of her contacts were to engineering staff members, Gavan and an unidentified African American gentleman, who did all they could to get me on my way. In addition, all the workers were friendly and hospitable. There were many smiles and greetings in passing, whether on the elevator or lobby area. They should be commended for a job well done.
- Topel (8/5): Paying for location and ambiance. No concierge and microwave rental is a striking lack of accommodation - Decor and ambiance are very beautiful. There were some interesting limitations however like no readily accessible microwave and ice machines limited to certain floors I was never more insulted - imagine being at a. 4+ star hotel, paying $300+ a night and having to RENT a microwave. For everything I enjoyed at this location that lack of accommodation gobsmacked me. This is the first 4 star+ hotel I’ve patronized that doesn’t have concierge service. It’s also pretty striking given that there are usually 2-3 staff members standing in the lobby. The day I checked out, I struggled getting through traffic in the lobby and eventually to the door (automated buttons weren’t working). Imagine my surprise when a staff member literally ran after me “excuse me?! Your shoes are really dope! Are those the new (X brand)?” I gave a quick thanks and proceeded with my departure.

The staff was great with the exception of a staff member that worked overnight. She was extremely rude . I along with 3 other couples booked rooms for New Year’s Eve,we sat in the lobby it was very quite and nice but the staff member turned off the lights and fireplace so we were sitting in the dark. . I was so embarrassed because I encouraged my friends and their spouses to come to the hotel. I wanted to do a review with my daughter who has a huge social media following but the one employee ruined the whole experience.

Walking in, you can feel the great vibes and soul of Hyde Park. The room was gorgeous, clean, and the turndown service always took great care of us. Chris was able to answer any and all questions we had with a smile. Only a short walk to the Metra, it was so easy to get downtown and back in a matter of minutes. I’ve stayed at the Sophy several times and this was never an issue. If safety is a priority for you, rethink staying of parking on hotel lot is not available. If not, be prepared to park two blocks away or on the street. Not a good look for hotel.

I received warm and friendly assistance from Zach, Muntu and Nicolette during my stay. Requests were handled promptly with courtesy. The location is very convenient to walk to nearby restaurants and stores. The Mesler in the lobby is a must try for at least one meal and or drinks while there! Definitely will stay here again!

I have come to recognize and continue to get to know the staff after so many trips. Sam is such a delight and always provides such warm hospitality! A fried chicken sandwich from Mesler is always a must-have when I arrive! The rooms are gorgeous, spacious, and cozy. Highly recommend! I’m always so sad to leave and so excited to come back!

We were first greeted by a two very tall young men at the front desk who assisted us with our bags in the cold winter weather we got there early and there was no problem with us getting an early check-in the fact that we got there earlier our amenities were not yet in our room. Immediately after that we were greeted by an old face from our last visit and a wonderful. Smile, it was Sam, who remembered us. Who was genuinely happy to see us return. Sam gave us our amenities and it felt like he truly wanted us to have a wonderful time while we were in Chicago. there’s so many wonderful individuals at this hotel LaTroy Jackie Nefertari Teshia and Jasmine to name a few. Not to mention the wonderful housekeeping staff that made the hotel look so exquisite on a daily basis as well as our room the food in the restaurant and the service was fantastic. You have to try the Amish chicken. It’s delicious Chef Greg is amazing and the entire culinary team should be extremely proud of their talents. They are displayed with beautiful expressions of their plate presentations. if you want to see true professional bartenders, and showmanship you have to go, there for a evening libation where you’ll be treated to a wonderful jazz band and cocktail servers who don’t miss a beat. I was able to have the privilege of speaking with the director of operations and I told the young lady that her hard-working efforts were not going unnoticed. Michael the General Manager. Will walk through the lobby and greet everyone with a smile just to say good morning and good afternoon and good evening. He should be very proud of his team that he has assembled at this property. This hotel is the main reason why we decided to buy a home in Hyde Park. Two blocks away from the hotel We will no longer be staying at the hotel after this visit, but we will be coming back on a daily basis to hang out in the bar and restaurant meet newfound friends and get information about the city of Chicago. We are from Houston Texas and it’s a blessing when you can find southern hospitality up north in Chicago.

Target is down the street, plenty of other shopping options in the area and great restaurants.

Our bartender, Arlene, could not have been more accommodating, professional and attentive. My colleagues had extremely challenging drink requests and Arlene exceeded their expectations. I will continue to patronize the establishment even more while she's employed!

The weekend brunch is especially entertaining. The rooms are well appointed, clean, and perfect for a short stay. The customer service is excellent. Special thanks to Sam for bringing up a wine bottle opener when we couldn’t find the one in our room (it was there). I love staying at the Sophy. It’s our home away from home. Treat yourself!

This is more than just a hotel; it's a true Chicago gem that pays attention to every detail. From the moment I stepped inside, the staff's dedication to guest comfort was immediately apparent. I had just arrived from Florida, and I felt instantly cared for. A special shout-out to Sam, who was exceptional. He personally ensured my check-in process was smooth, comfortable, and welcoming, setting the perfect tone for my entire visit. The room interiors are absolutely stunning—modern, stylish, and incredibly inviting. The attention to detail is remarkable: not only is there a unique vinyl record player, but the room also features beautiful local paintings and a collection of books about Chicago, making the space feel deeply connected to the city. The service continued to impress with every interaction. The entire front desk and reception team were so friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Even my small room service order for a snack was excellent. What made it truly stand out was the friendly lady who delivered the food; we had a wonderful conversation, and her kindness was the cherry on top. I also noticed the inviting and sophisticated ambiance of the on-site restaurant area when I went down to pick up a to-go order—I almost regretted not having my meal there! Upon entering the lobby I was greeted by Sam with a smile and such a professional demeanor. He brought sunshine to a dreary sunny day. All staff that I came in contact with were very professional and welcoming. I definitely have this Hotel on my list to come back and be a guest. Mike
