Guest Reviews
- Stacy-Jo (6/5): - Parking was easy and location was good. So many stairs to have to lug up and down heavy luggage. Staff were never seen except briefly at breakfast. Overall, it was okay. Views were good.
- Tolar (10/5): - Easy walk to most places, plenty of parking behind.
- Elaine (8/5): - Reception was unstaffed so keys just left on counter. No welcome at all. Room itself was comfortable but bathroom was a little tired. Ample off road parking and breakfast sufficient
- Lee (8/5): - Accommodation's were good here, everything worked fine. Easy to check in and easy to check out, keys waiting on us, didn’t really interact with staff at all. Only stayed a single night, but everything was fine.
- Daquan (2/5): - What on earth it's rated a 3 star hotel! It would be a 0 star, worse than a motel.
No service, no microwave, no refrigerator and no breakfast.
- John Paul (8/5): - Location was minutes away from Kirkjufellsfoss and near a gas station and grocery store. The check in was super easy, just grab your key in the reception. Only problem, there were no check in instructions. Good thing another guest was nice enough to inform us. The room was spacious but the hallway has a bit of a smell. No kitchen but breakfast is available for a fee. Good place to rest for the night. Nice backdoor view of the ocean.
- Kermit (10/5): - Really enjoyed my stay here! Ery friendy and helpful staff! Decent-sized room. Breakfast too expensive so didn’t partake.
- Andrea (8/5): - Nicw place
- pirjo (8/5): - Thomas in the reseption was super helpfull. He takes care everything. We give 10+ for his service. Carry our bags, tells all places worth to visit etc. Our room was quiet as we hope. 101 room number. What I wonder there were heating in bathroom at all. So towels doesn't dry. And soon there will be problem with mole in the walls.
- Gillian (6/5): Dorm room like - Room was very small. Almost dorm room like. Pillows were terrible and lumpy. Narrow stairs to walk up to get to rooms. Nice location though.
- Ivana (10/5): - Very friendly
- michelle (10/5): - Amazing staff
- Ricky (8/5): - Too many stairs and they were dangerous when carrying baggage. Very impersonal.
- Stephen (8/5): - Convenient parking. Limited food options. Seemed way overpriced but probably typical for rural Iceland.
- Clair (6/5): - We did enjoy dinner at a place in walking distance of the hotel and it was delicious. That was the only place that was open at the time. They didn't have a lift in the hotel, so we had to carry our luggage up a couple of sets of stairs which was kind of annoying, but we made it work. The room was spacious and worked out for what we needed. Breakfast wasn't an option for us since didn't pre-select it when we booked the room, so that was a bummer. No one wanted to make the exception to it and offer it. So we just figured something out the next morning. We did come on a day when it was raining and gloomy, so it might have been different if the weather was nicer.
- Eleanor (6/5): - The booking was not as requested. They had no breakfast included. We had to pay extra. Our room was not as requested. Our booking was for two beds. When asked for a new room with this accomodation the staff person became very flustered. The hotel lost power at breakfast. The staff was unaware and had to be summoned to fix. Food ran out at breakfast. Staff seemed bothered by replenishing.
- David (6/5): Basic hotel. - This is what you would expect for a budget level hotel in the US. I'm not sure if there is such a thing in Iceland.
The hotel is clean and rooms are comfortable. Showers are very small pre-fab units. Breakfast is very basic. Don't expect more than some basic fruit, cereal, toast, boiled eggs etc. Management seemed to have staffing issues. Breakfast could be overrun easily with little staff to help. There was not a bar.
- Livio (6/5): - Too expensive for the quality offered
- Cyndi (10/5): - Quiet area.Friendly staff. Comfortable beds.
- Francie (10/5): - The hotel was comfortable, convenient and clean. It was in a great location to stay very near to kirkjufellfoss. Nice little town to walk around too.
- Kellen (6/5): - Rooms small and breakfast not good. No one basically at front desk either.
- Xu (2/5): - NO HOT WATER
We arrived the hotel soaking wet and freezing, and all we wanted to do was to take a hot shower, but surprisingly there was no hot water at all. There was no one at the reception desk. We tried calling the number they gave us for issues, but no one ever picked up. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. DO NOT STAY HERE.
- arthur (10/5): - Stayed for a night. Check in was very fast, rooms were very clean, and the hotel was very quiet. Will book again.
- Cecile (6/5): - Kirkjufell hotel is a simple, unpretentious place. The price however was higher than a 4 star hotel in Reykjavik. The breakfast was simple too: bread, crackers, cereal, hard boiled egg, some jam, tea and coffee. No skyr!
The shower leaked outside of the enclosure.
In summary: way too expensive for what you get.
- Richard (10/5): 10min to Kirkjufell - If you’re looking for a basic room, shower and convenient to Kirkjufell this works. About a 10 min drive to the lot and has views of the mountain from our room. Very quiet and basic accommodation.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great service! - We stayed here in June for a couple of days. Good location in town. Great service by the couple managing the hotel.
- ANDREW (6/5): - The room was spacious and had a nice view but overall the experience was very bizarre. Literally didn’t see a single employee the entire time we were there. We arrived and the key to our room was on the front desk with a note. The restaurant was closed and there was no way to get something as simple as a bottled water. Nobody there in the morning as we were departing. Definitely the weirdest hotel experience I’ve ever had.
- Steve (6/5): - Folks, there are a few things you should know. First, pretty much the whole place had a mold and or chemical smell. Unacceptable. Second, there was no elevator. Hence, we had to walk up sketchy stairs to carry luggage up. We are elderly and that is an issue. Fortunately the manager was a delightful young woman who went out of her way to help. I would not stay here again, nor would I recommend it. If it had not been for the likeable woman behind the desk the whole stay would have been a disaster
- Andrea (10/5): - Loved it and the staff. Would stay aging 10 out of 10 thank you
- Alan (8/5): - Nice big comfortable room and the bed was excellent. Hauling the suitcase up the stairs might cause a few issues, though didn’t bother me. Lack of a reception seems to be an Icelandic custom that takes a little getting used to.
- Thomas (6/5): - This place was clean enough. It was just weird because even though we got there early for check in, there were no staff anywhere. Just keys and our names on a paper. There were some other people who didn’t have electricity in their room and it took awhile before they could get some help.
- Stephanie (6/5): - The only good thing about this place is that it’s very closed to Kirkjufell.
- John (2/5): - Needs to shut down the smell was so bad we left for
Another hotel . I mean the smell was TERRIBLE! Just like to warn other people about this. So we lost 250.00
Dollars but just could not stay there we would be sick
From the smell .
- Janelle (2/5): - Our bed sheet/cover had over a dozen hairs on it...obviously not cleaned before available for the night again. The phone number left as available to call was consistently busy, so noone could be reached. Noone was available at the check-in desk at any time during our stay.
- Pete (8/5): - Close to falls.
- Laurel (4/5): - The hotel has 2 levels with only a narrow upright staircase which is very difficult to carry suitcases. The staff was immature unsociable and unhelpful. Also often unattended by staff. The room walls are thin so the noise is loud. The pipes are loud. The fire alarm went off and no one was around to help for a number of minutes and they did not know how to turn it off.
On a positive note the beds are comfortable and the shower is nice.
- Adnan (10/5): - Overall, great stay!
- Laura (10/5): - The towns on the Snaefellsness peninsula are very small - like populations of 100 - 2000 people. I note that just because of the numerous choices of amenities around this particular one. Walkable to restaurants, coffee, and a cute little grocery. We moved on to a much more remote part of Iceland after this stop, and missed the convenience we had experienced here. Felt safe and clean. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Plenty of parking. One side of the hotel faces the ocean, the other Mt Kirkjufell.
- Mark (10/5): - Clean, quiet, and great customer service.
- Kelly (8/5): - Very basis hotel in industrial port area. Room was cold all night even with heat set at max. Friendly and helpful staff, clean.
- Taylor (8/5): - Great location, close to scenic spots. A bit challenging checking in in the evening but the host was in the end accommodating to make up for it.
- Shirish (8/5): - Shower place is very tiny, but overall it’s good place for 1 night.
- DONALD (8/5): - The room, bath were "spartan", but iguess you Get What Ypu PAY For. I appreciated the free breakfasts.
- Roark (8/5): - It’s a nice place to stay. Very clean but in a strange location. Some of the rooms will have good views in a few don’t
- Michael (6/5): - Very small hotel we stayed at after our ferry. Staff was nice, but the rooms were very small.
Great for a one night stay before continuing on your adventure.
- Felipe (8/5): - Fast check in and check out.
- MARIANA (8/5): - Room was clean and spacious; also very comfy mattress! But our room was up two sets of stairs and there is no elevator! Which was not ideal with the luggage… breakfast was reasonable! Overall we enjoyed our stay.
- ALYSHA (8/5): - Great little town/village. Perfect for a quiet getaway.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Truly a 2.5 star hotel. - Let’s see … insufficient and unclear parking, 3 floors and no elevator, below average budget hotel breakfast, the room feels like a converted attic with little space to the sides of the bed and a super tiny shower … oh and the stairs down are tiny and you can easily fall with your luggage … and over $300 / night! The only good thing to say so that the staff is friendly and helps you with the luggage.
- Garth (8/5): Better than expected - We truly enjoyed our stay at Kirkjufell Hotel. It's important to note that Grundarfjordur is a small town on the northern coast of the peninsula -- not a place where one should or would expect a 5-star hotel. Instead, what you're seeking is a clean, comfortable, friendly place to stay the night while enjoying the beautiful outdoors, which is exactly what Kirkjufell Hotel provides. The hotel is charming in the way that urban hotels lack, with bird and fish identification posters hung in common areas because they are relevant to guests. The lounge areas, though modest, are comfortable, and the included breakfast was a typical Icelandic breakfast buffet with yogurt, cereal, meats, cheese, breads, etc. Our rooms were also typical, perhaps a little larger than the hotel rooms we enjoyed in Reykjavik and elsewhere.
The one note that may be important to others -- I don't think there was an elevator, though it's possible we overlooked it since we were just staying on the second floor.
- Andy (10/5): USA visitor Recommended - Reasonably priced. PRIVATE BATH! Clean. Very small by American standards but very acceptable choice.
- Jennifer (8/5): - The room itself was clean and the breakfast was adequate. The hallways smelled a little musty but you couldn't smell it in the room itself. The staff was accommodating and nice. It was very close to Kirkjufell mountain and waterfall.
- Barton (6/5): - There aren’t many options of places to stay in town. This isn’t a luxury hotel but it served its purpose. We slept well and the continental breakfast was fine. The bathroom was not nice but we managed.
- Ronald (6/5): - Had some issues during our stay. Front desk clerk seemed indifferent and really did not seem to care. I have the feeling that the owners are only in it to for the money due to high demand for accommodation in the summer, not to be in the hospitality business. Breakfast was very simple, but adequate. Rooms and hotel in general feel very worn and dated, again, I think the owners are in it for the money. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom very cramped with tiny sink. Not in the most pleasant location but convenient to the small town. Would only stay here if no other suitable options are available.
- Eduardo (8/5): - Great location, good breakfast, and helpful friendly staff. Room is clean
- Hyejeong (8/5): - The staff was nice and helpful. The room was clean. Breakfast was included and food was good. The room and the bathroom is nice but small. There is no elevator in the 3rd floor building.
- Alexander (8/5): - Came late did not see anybody, just the note and key. Nice breakfast actually started earlier than stated time which was great for us
- Mark (8/5): - A good basic hotel. I don't think there is an elevator in case that is an issue for any guests. It was not a problem for us. The included breakfast was OK. The hotel had a back deck with a hot tub and fire pit. Neither of them were in use while we were at the hotel. Rooms were very clean and reasonably quite. It was nice to have windows that open. The town around the hotel is small enough to walk everywhere. There are several eating options and a small supermarket. Would stay here again next time we are in the area.
- Eileen (10/5): - Very pleasant stay. Thank you.
- Kristine (10/5): - The room was clean, check in friendly and efficient. It was everything we needed.
- Julie (10/5): - We had a very spacious room. The couple who run the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The area around the hotel is beautiful, great waterfalls and hiking.
A nice place to overnight if you are staying in the area.
- John (8/5): - Slightly dated in common areas, but rooms are nice. Nice staff and decent breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Conveniently situation hotel in the harbour. - Conveniently situation hotel in the harbour. We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel after reading previous reviews. We were met by friendly staff at reception. Room was large and clean. The rooms seem like they have been recently refurbished. The hotub was an added bonus.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Pricey hotel for no reason. The rooms and halls could seriously use an update. The entire place just looks outdated and generally not clean. The sheets and blankets also looked worn out and the floor was all scratched from moving the beds together and apart constantly (they have twin beds that get put together or apart). I did not have the breakfast buffet since it was not included in the already high price.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We saw no staff at all (keys were left at desk with our name, and it was about 6 pm). There was no staff in the morning, and no breakfast or buffet to choose. There is no elevator, so be prepared to walk up stairs with your luggage, possibly to a third floor. The eooms were clean.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Skip this hotel - Old hotel that had an odor. Bathroom was dirty and mildew.
- Ruby (2/5): - The property is very old... The staff was talking on phone all the time when we check-in which shows no hospitality. We booked a room with double bed. However, we were given a room with two single beds and even worse, the lock is not working at all!! Not to mention that there is half bottle of cold water remaining in the boiler which seemed to us that they didn't do the cleaning.
We asked for a double room (i.e. what we have booked at Expedia) at the reception desk. The receptionist was again talking on phone and being impolite by throwing us the key for another room. As the room given was still disappointing, we turned out checking out and spent extra sum for another hotel! I am very disappointed with this experience and i definitely recommend you not to spend a penny there!
- Cathy (4/5): - This is an older hotel in need of updating. Both the sink and the shower were extremely slow to drain. All five TV channels showed the same music video. Disappointing!
- Ignat (6/5): - The hotel is at good location but is a bit overpriced for what it is offering
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Rooms small to tiny, no lift to upper floors. Breakfast very basic toast and cereals
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was convenient, parking was great and the views were unbelievable. Breakfast was also very yummy. A little walk down the street brought you to a great pizza place, so you didn't have to go to far to get food.
- Vincent (6/5): - Hotel is quite run down. Small tv and toilet is small.
- Armando (8/5): Great place to stay - Definitely you can stay in this hotel!
- Istour (4/5): - The employees are good. But it locates in a seaport industry area, wired smell from a fish factory. Room is dark, bothroom is small. The worst is the bebs and quilts are dirty as they didn't change from last customers.
- Vicky (8/5): - The staff were very friendly and helpful. The beds were too soft and were definitely not double sized. Breakfast was good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice location with restaurant, grocery store and petrol station. Quiet and clean room with free breakfast and complimentary drinks for whole day.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable! - We were staying one of the largest bed room facing mountains instead partial sea view.
The bedroom was bigger the bed were firm and comfy.
Staffs were all kind and informative.
I will go back and recommend to friends
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Water got cold and it took couple of hours to get warm again, very inconvenient. There is no elevator. The rooms are spacious for Iceland. The breakfast could be much better.
- Kevin (10/5): - We stayed one night here. Very good facility, nice rooms and the location is excellent - next to the water. Also less than five minute drive to Kirkjufell - the most photographed spot in Iceland. We saw, through the room window, a huge cluster of black-backed gulls, that was less than 50 feet from the room. And they stayed there all night ! The manager was very helpful. We had to leave next day very early before they open for breakfast. But they packed special breakfast for us taking care of even our vegetarian dietary requirements. Definitely recommend this hotel.
- Hunter (10/5): Stay here if you are in the area. - The family that runs this establishment are wonderful. I left feeling full after a lovely breakfast, well rested after a fantastic sleep, and a warm heart after seeing the mother, father, and their children work together to provide guests with the highest level of customer service. Thank you so much! :)
- Anat (8/5): Small hotel with great service - We have stayed in this hotel for one night only. The hotel could not find our reservation for some unknown reason but they didn’t let us wait, quickly gave us our two rooms and didn’t even ask for cc information! The hotel is clean, rooms have everything one needs and good service.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good service but the hotel was a bit run down
