• Paul (8/5): Good place to stay but please stay open after 10pm - Good food, and great room The 4 of us had to leave the bar/restaurant at 10pm so they could lock up, with no option of anywhere to continue our evening/drinks except one of our bedrooms
• Tootsie81 (7/5): Could have been better - The bedroom was nice, and the bed very comfortable. The decor was tasteful. The staff on arrival were very friendly and welcoming. The village is pretty. The food we had for dinner was delicious. The quality of the main dishes for dinner and breakfast was high with beautifully cooked eggs. We had a classic room, probably the superior rooms would have been better equipped and laid out. The room was near the main road, the traffic was noisy in the mornings. The bathroom was a wet room, the basin was within the wet floor of the shower so we had to be careful not to shower until we'd finished at the basin. The basin was very slow to drain so the taps filled the basin when running. Our room wasn't cleaned or replenished during our stay. This may have been for eco reasons but we weren't informed of this. Luckily our bottle of fresh milk lasted for two days. The room was dimly lit, it would have been very dark in the winter. Breakfast was well cooked. There were no side plates, butter or toast extra to the main plates. The buffet was very small, and the pastries were not fresh. The young lad serving needed some training in customer service skills.

There is very little space in the rooms—the beds, furniture, and shower are all old. The only way to stay here without complaint is if you've had a lot to drink.

Dinner was disappointing with no seasoning on the polenta under (1) chicken supreme and (2) the mushroom dish. Bowl of boiling pea soup spilled overcooked me, burning a thumb. Apologies and cleared up at the time but no mention subsequently and I was surprised to be charged full price.

Room was a bit tired and needed a thorough clean behind the sofa and cobwebs on the ceiling. No milk in the room. Evidence of damp all around the ceiling and walls. Breakfast menu was a bit limited. Ie fruit selection was a choice of an orange or an apple. No hot chocolate.

Location was quiet at night so I was able to sleep well. Good location also for walking in the area, on the Wessex Ridgeway with great views and wildlife.

• sara (9/5): A very comfortable night in a welcoming pub. - The staff were very welcoming, our room was very comfortable and a good size, and there were some nice finishing touches which made it a cut above normal pub fare. Shaftesbury isn't too far away, so we used this opportunity to pay a visit and have a look at Gold Hill (pictured) The location was a peaceful rural village, a little further from the nearest town than we had calculated, so it proved impractical to go out in the evening, particularly as the local roads were not in such good condition, but that's not the pub's fault!

• Elena (8/5): Nice hotel with a very welcoming staff but the room cleaning needs more attention - I really liked the room: it was a decent size, newly refurbished, the bed was comfortable. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. We really appreciated free welcome drinks. The breakfast was nice. Despite the fact that the room was renovated, it wad badly cleaned. Very dirty carpet, black mold in a bathroom, dirty toilet. And the room was poorly lit.

Young lady not welcoming and pretty inattentive. No condiments offered for breakfast or a how was your breakfast can I get you anything else?. Poor. Bathroom needed a deep clean. Mirror above sink full of previous resident toothpaste along with cobwebs over mirror . Coffee machine appeared to leak even though small amount of water within.

The pub also has a great menu and we appreciated the free welcome drink. We enjoyed a delicious meal here one evening and would love to visit again. Great location with easy parking. Breakfast was great too and we appreciated flexibility to provide this ‘to go’ when we had an early start. The room was a little dark as there was no overhead light, just lamps.

• Gail (10/5): Gorgeous stay, great food, just a shame I had to leave early. Would definitely stay again. - Millie, the manageress, had kindly upgraded me in advance of my arrival, so I had Purdey, reputedly the best room in the house. It was gorgeous. Situated on the first floor with windows over the road and the car park, it was enormous. Bed, sofa, bench at the bottom of the bed, big claw foot bath AND a large shower. Water pressure was the best I have ever experienced, very powerful both for loo flushing and running water! I ate in the bar area, and the food was exceptional. I had Arancini, the best I had tasted, luscious, followed by Cauliflower soup, and then the Pork belly - much more meat on it than pork belly I had previously sampled, which was mostly fat (tasty though that too can be). As a Buscombe member, I also had a free glass of South African wine, which was very smooth. The Internet worked most of the time, so I was able to combine a bit of relaxation with a bit of work. Great night's sleep with the bonus of Owls hooting to send me off. All the team members were very friendly and helpful. Michael, the regional chef, was overseeing and was particularly interested in comments about the food. I could overhear him reporting back to the kitchen. Interesting to hear! Congratulations. It is an old building, so there are quirks, but the stairs at the bottom where the door opens into the bar are very steep and narrow, so care needs to be taken, particularly if you are carrying bags. Could do with a little light, even if battery operated, in the closest where the tea makings are kept and used. The ideal would be one that turns on and off with the opening and closing of the cupboard door.

• Breeds (10/5): An incredible treasure tucked away in the heart of Wiltshire - What a find! King John Inn is hidden away in what seems like the middle of nowhere. So quiet! From the moment of arrival, we were given a friendly welcome, and shown to our room. It was huge, with an incredibly large, comfortable bed. The bathroom was equally enormous with high, wooden beam ceilings. And the bath is big enough for two! The rainfall shower was great with lovely hot water. All immaculately clean, with real attention to detail in every aspect of the stay. The black out blinds are so good, at night, it is total darkness - a great night's sleep! We'd booked dinner and this was delightful. Excellent service throughout the evening, with incredible food, a vast choice of drinks, and a comfortable setting that let the conversation flow. Plenty of parking right next to the rooms. Breakfast had extensive choice, and it was as good quality as the excellent dinner we had the evening before. Just the right amount. All in all a quality place to visit for a special occasion, delivered by lovely people who know good hospitality.
