• Judith (10/5): A great place to stay! - We had a comfortable room with excellent facilities. It was clean and welcoming. We were visiting family who had already organised a meal out with us otherwise we would have been very happy to eat at the Welldiggers. On our return in the evening we were able to enjoy a complimentary drink at the bar. Through absolutely no fault of their own there was little or no water in the morning so we were unable to shower. Apparently the water board had shut off the water ahead of schedule which caused the Welldiggers staff no end of problems. The manager gave us a full refund on our bill which was incredibly generous. I would recommend a stay at the Welldiggers to anyone! Thankyou for your kindness😊

• Michiel (10/5): - We verbleven in een compacte maar comfortabele kamer, boven het restaurant. De kamer - aan de achterzijde van het pand - was heerlijk rustig. Het bed was comfortabel en de badkamer was klein maar prima. Ook het restaurant is gezellig en het eten is er goed. Verder hadden we onze toilettas laten liggen. Stom natuurlijk, maar het is door de accommodatie snel opgepakt en opgestuurd. Topservice! 's Avonds kwam er etenslucht van de restaurantkeuken de hotelkamer binnen via het raam. Dat was na sluiting van het restaurant ook weer over.

Cheerful, polite, attentive without being overbearing, from house staff to restaurant staff, they made us feel welcome and valued. A superb team. No wonder it is always so booked up! We have been in the waiting queue for a long time and were not disappointed with our stay. We wish we could have stayed longer! Just for the sake of being picky, perhaps a more generous supply of breakfast tea and coffee in the room would have been welcome. That said, we were given more when we asked!

It was a warm night and having the window open lead to little sleep, with a room overlooking the road. Some plumbing issues in our room also. Food served at supper was not hot and the same at breakfast. I have been here several times for supper and it was great. This visit was very disappointing for the money spent.

The eating area has panoramic views and is large and airy The bed was way too high my feet dangled a foot or more above the floor I had to climb onto it and I am 5ft6 so going to the loo 5 times a night then having to climb back onto a bed is just not the best

• st.john (10/5): Charming stay at a proper country inn with luxurious touches. - Incredible value for money for such a lovely place. The room was really comfy and the pub itself was characterful and buzzing. Breakfast was very good and there is an amazing view from the dining area. For the price, I don't think there is anything that can be improved. In my view it is pretty much perfect and I'm really just typing until the bar goes green.

• Alison (9/5): Excellent for a one night stay! - The bed was extremely comfortable, even luxurious, and although the shower room was very small the shower itself was excellent. Breakfast was very good, staff friendly and helpful and there is a wonderful view from the dining room. The room we stayed in had one all could need but, perhaps, for our tastes, too many items for the limited space eg unnecessary artificial plants. We had possibly more luggage than most guests due the fact we were attending a semi formal event in the area that evening which meant it felt rather cramped. However for one night's stay it fitted the bill perectly.

Bed comfortable, bathroom small but good shower. Food, including breakfast, is very good. Service excellent Bed is a double rather than a king. Road outside is quite fast and used by heavy lorries - get a rear-facing room if you can.

Bedroom small but great view and had mini terrace to sit outside. Dinners very good. Would prefer buffet breakfast, fixed menu makes it difficult to have exactly what you want. Fairly small room had what would have been useful surfaces covered with artificial plants.

The room was comfortable, especially the bed and there was plenty of parking. good choice of beers and wines available at the bar. The rooms could do with better soundproofing.

Only really accessible by car, though pleasant country location is a plus if you do have private transport. Access to bedrooms involves a very short walk outside – umbrella useful for meals in wet weather.

• Rebecca (10/5): Fantastic, warm, charming pub accommodation! - The Welldiggers Arms was a fantastic place to stay for our weekend away in the South Downs. The view was stunning at sunset over the hills, and the room was incredibly charming, down to tiny details like a wonderful scented air and the radio playing when we arrived. Both the dinner and the breakfast we ate there were excellent - the staff were particularly flexible with the breakfast which we much appreciated!

• Mr_Fogg (10/5): A beautiful gem in the countryside 🤩 - Stunning location, set in the beautiful countryside but very close to Petworth. The room was so beautiful, with anything that you can possibly need, very comfy. The pub is very cosy, the restaurant is beautiful with stunning views of the countryside and the food delicious, we had dinner and breakfast and both meals were delicious. The staff was very friendly and yet very professional and kind. A great place for our dog too, she loved her stay too! Nothing we didn't like.

Particularly from the two young men at front of house to check us in and at breakfast It would be great if the car park had spaces painted on the floor or fence or somehow marked, we were staying the night and couldn’t park as cars were parked with lots of space between - it seems this was a problem for others as cars were parked down the road or on the grass

• Véronique (10/5): Niet twijfelen, zeer zeker een aanrader! - Vriendelijk personeel, propere en comfortabele kamers. Geweldige pub met heerlijk eten. Heel hondvriendelijk. Wij komen zeker terug! Iets moeilijker om het korte wandelingetje met de hond te doen, er is een wandelpad maar in het donker is dat nogal griezelig.

The room & the pub was very clean , the bed & pillows were very comfortable . A voucher for a free drink was a nice touch too. No sweetener in the room & no sweetener in the pub when I asked at breakfast for my morning tea ? Not the first time we’ve stayed at a Butcombe pub and the other was the same . Cluttered room big plants , small work space/dressing table with too much on & other unnecessary items ie radio , plastic plants , clock not even correct or wound up because it’s one of those loud ticking ones probably.

Some staff were inexperienced and were a bit slow. Very nice evening meal. Lovely ambience. Breakfast. Didn’t have all the options and our group of four did not have a good, hot breakfast. A pity that we had a less good breakfast experience, as this is reflected in our overall rating.

• Camilla (10/5): A lucky find which we have already recommended! - We had a wonderful stay at the friendly Welldiggers Arms, the evening specials on the menu were particularly delicious. The staff so helpful, even providing the loan of a charging plug when we discovered we had forgotten ours. The pub itself was beautiful with wonderful views and a great atmosphere. We had a wonderful stay.

• Matt (10/5): If you're looking for a charming country pub with comfy rooms near Petworth, you won't find better - The Welldiggers Arms is a 17th-century inn that has been sympathetically and efficiently modernised, and the result is a charming country pub whose 14 en-suite bedrooms are comfortable and clean. Mine - Algie Moss, named after a much loved and now dead local farmer who I am reliably informed used to milk his house-cow by hand, sitting on a three-legged stool, and cut his corn with a binder - was also agreeably spacious. I was not able to try dinner during my one-night stay, but the Full English Breakfast I had the next morning was top-notch, the sausages particularly tasty and the coffee also very good. Finally, the view from the restaurant is truly wonderful, as the snap I have attached will attest: a glorious vista across open fields and hedgerows to the rolling South Downs beyond. I paid £242.25 for one night's bed and breakfast, which is about £50 more than I would term excellent value, but I am nit-picking because everything else about the Welldiggers Arms is superb.

• ANTHONY (5/5): IF YOU BOOK IN, AVOID ROOM 1 - THE FOOD, BOTH BREAKFAST AND DINNER WERE GOOD. THE STAFF WERE EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD AND HELPFUL THE ROOM (NO 1) LOOKED GOOD BUT WAS NEXT TO A BOILER ROOM WHICH WAS EXCEPTIONALLY NOISY THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT OF OUR STAY. iT MADE SLEEPING VERY DIFFICULT
