Guest Reviews
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional historic Chania harbour hotel - San Salvatore Monastery is an exceptional building, steeped in history. The room was a large duplex with 2 double beds and a large sitting area, kitchen and double-shower room. There are views of the famous harbour and lighthouse from the upper bedroom. It is very close to the end of the harbour with loads of tavernas yet there was no noise in the room (apart from the central heating, which was a good thing in the cool weather). The Cretan breakfast is a 'must' if you like genuine Cretan fare - breads, cheeses, yoghurts, pastries - delicious. The sunset view from outside the front door was brilliant. Our stay was too short.
- Silvia (10/5): Great stay and will recommend this place. - Its spacious, clean and safe. Great location near the restaurants, shops and the port. But tucked in enough so its calm and peaceful. Warm welcome and assistance by Irene.
- KAOC (9/5): Pluses and Minuses - It was spacious, quiet, a good location, an interesting property. Irene was lovely. The messaging system was less than impressive. It took a long time for Irene to get messages - like 24 hours.
I also expected some upscale bathroom products. At least a nice body lotion, some traveler niceties. The record player in the room was not hooked up, so that was disappointing. The only sea view was from the upstairs bedroom. The downstairs bed was very uncomfortable/thin. I'm glad we weren't sharing with another couple. There is a full kitchen but they are clear you cannot eat in the rooms, so that's a little baffling. No microwave or we could have heated food up and eaten on the table on the front porch.
It's a no frills place but quite expensive. It was very satisfying in most ways but disappointing in others.
- laura (10/5): Wonderful stay in beautiful location! Great for families! - Amazing location, charming setting, and very friendly helpful staff!
- Marc (10/5): The best -
- Brenda (10/5): Irene, was a very welcoming, generous host. Her communication helped guide us to a very comfortable visit. The location - Comfortable, clean, the view and location. Wonderful host. Wish we could have stayed longer
- Deborah (6/5): Great location and friendly hosts. For the price, the room needs updates to stay competitive. - Good location. Access to the bathroom requires leaving the main living space through a door into a second space that is via a kitchen area. Cold lighting and dated furniture needs updating.
- Melanie (10/5): Outstanding historic property that made our trip to Crete extra special and memorable. - We had an incredible stay at this property. Our host was welcoming, kind and attentive to our requests. The room was spacious, well appointed and in an incredible location. It was truly such a privilege to stay in an historic property such as this. The breakfasts made by our host were lovely -- exceptional Cretan food, thoughtfully prepared. Would recommend without hesitation. Nothing -- we loved our stay here.
- Judith (6/5): I wouldn’t spend the money to stay there again. I was expecting something a little more luxurious and special, based on - It was a nice location, very convenient to old town. We thought we were getting a two room suite, but the second bed was in a loft with very steep steps, and there were steps to the bathroom, which is not ideal for middle of the night bathroom trips. Also the coffee pot was in the room where it would wake everyone up.
- aaron (8/5): - This property is very nice great views. I don’t think it was worth the asking price though. Lastly, the property manager will go in the room randomly without permission . Was charged extra fees due to “excessive food”, and all I had was peanuts no dinner items. I got a random text asking me not to drink so much while out in the shopping area on my wife on our honeymoon. I thought this was a bit odd.
- Yun (10/5): It’s a wonderful stay. - location, facilities, breakfast none
- Warren (9/5): Thank you for your gracious hospitality! Hopefully we will be back in the future - Amazing location! Beautiful building. Unique and had character. Would stay here again. The bathroom and kitchen area in this room is uncomfortably warm. However the AC was fantastic in the main 2 level bedroom/sitting area. Super cute outdoor space overlooking the courtyard. Great ambiance.
- George (10/5): Wonderful stay with an awesome view - We had a fantastic stay. Irene was a warm, welcoming host and always available to help. The view from the apartment was amazing, second to none. It was a shame our stay was not longer and I would thoroughly recommend. Nothing
- Jennie (10/5): One of a kind accommodation with history, peacefulness and stunning location - The host Irene was fabulous, the perfect balance of presence/friendliness/hospitality with a personal touch. The property is a historical wonder as one might expect so it definitely lived up to expectations. Peaceful, well-maintained and a welcome respite from the heat (extremely thick walls)/crowds yet so very accessible with a stunning location.
Bathroom amenities included products from Apitiva - a great brand from Greece based on natural products which was a real treat as were the delicious breakfasts (option to choose on situ or at a local bistro/restaurant). As my friend and I booked the 2 bed apartment on the ground floor which came with a private covered outdoor seating area come patio, we opted for having breakfast there so had a lovely view of the garden/cloisters. Having to leave on departure day!
- Jacob (10/5): This is one of the most special accommodation sites I have known in Crete and in Greece in general. - My wife and I stayed at this wonderful place for 2 nights. This is one of the most special accommodation sites I have known in Crete and in Greece in general. The service was excellent and the pleasantness and relaxation that surround the place are priceless. Everything was very good
- Susan (9/5): It’s a unique place to stay in a great location! We were very glad we chose to stay there. - The suite is in an old restored monastery and beautifully done. It’s near the harbor and close to shopping and restaurants. Parking is very difficult to find but if you use a taxi or Uber, it’s a great location. The host was charming and very helpful and the room was very clean and spacious. The bed and pillows were too firm for our liking but might suit other guests.
- Denise (10/5): Historic place the rest your head in Chania - Location and historical nature was the attraction. The room didn’t have any major issues. We were happy.
- Madhavi (8/5): Would love to stay there again! - Really liked the hospitality of Irene. She called to confirm the booking and was very helpful and checked on us throughout.
The location was excellent. We were able to walk everywhere in old chania and that made a huge difference.
The bathroom was exceptionally big and two people could take bath simultaneously.
The breakfast was excellent all 3 days.
She allowed us to check out late, gave us beach towels and reserved a sea facing table for our breakfast at the cafe.
We enjoyed spending time with her. There were puzzles in the room and an old vinyl player that my husband enjoyed. The only thing that i did not like was the room was warm and the AC was inadequate. It never cooled the room down to the degree I would have liked. I like to sleep cold and there was no fan and I felt warm all the 3 nights. In Irene's defense, I did not tell her that which was my problem. We were just in a hurry in the mornings to get to our activities and if I would have told her, i'm sure she would have fixed it but that was what made it less than perfect for me.
- Nikolaos (10/5): Just what we were looking for!! - Tucked away in the charming old town, this hotel is a true haven of historical charm and peacefulness. While private parking comes at a fee, the vibrant garden with its insightful exhibition on Chania's rich history and architecture awaits within. A delightful surprise was the modern suite's bath with invigorating power jets. The upper-level bedroom treated us to captivating views of the calm harbor, and the hosts' exceptional efforts to accommodate our last-minute requests truly made our stay exceptional. Thank you Irene!!!
- Anonymous (8/5): It was wonderful! The only negative was that the mattress is SO hard. - Really neat, very clean place in downtown. Building, cleanliness, location
- Amy (10/5): - Property was amazing! Would definitely stay there again.
Note that Parking is beyond horrible.
- Shirley (7/5): The owner is very nice , she tried her best to compromise all our needs, including the later check out. She is on top of - Location, history, breakfast, view Little pricey, but also because of the summer time. I wish there were some lights above the mirror for makeup purpose. Also a full view mirror in the room. One small A/C unit doesn’t seem work too well in the hot day for two levels.( but this also could be the personal preference)
- Anthony (4/5): - In all our travels, we have never taken the time to write a review on a property. With what we had to deal with at San Salvatore Monastery, I feel compelled to share our experience. We mistakenly stated two people when making the reservation online instead of our party of 4. On our arrival, the proprietor, Irene Anousaki, let us know that there would be an upcharge for the two children, and it would be double the price for the same room. The unit we were given had a loft with a queen bed and the downstairs area had a double bed, a bathroom and a kitchen. The kitchen unbelievably did not have a refrigerator, and when we inquired about this, Irene responded that the kitchen itself does not come with the unit…with no explanation...and that food was not allowed to be brought into the unit. As far as the beds…the double had an extremely hard mattress We asked to have a topper applied to make it tolerable for our second night and it was supplied for an additional 10 euros. What really put a bad taste in our mouth about San Salvatore Monastery was our checkout. Check-out time was stated as 11:00 AM. We notified Irene that we were checking out a just a few minutes after 11 am (11:15 to be exact) and we were then told that we would be charged an additional 150 euros for leaving 15 minutes late! She eventually agreed to not charge us given our dissatisfaction with our stay, but she ended up charging us anyway.
- Diana (10/5): Perfect retreat with a view from above. - The location is perfect, the view is outstanding and Irene made the stay a resounding success! You will not find someone so kind and attentive at the big hotels. She made our stay during our wedding weekend comfortable and easy. The only challenge is the stairs but view makes them worth every step.
- Mahrukh (10/5): Lovely property - One of the loveliest places I’ve stayed in, so close to everything in the whole town. Very clean and wonderful modern bathroom. The owner was so receptive to all our questions and always there. Breakfast was so personalized and delivered to our room. I felt like I was in a historic resort. The only challenge is parking which is on the street but you don’t need a car for Chania. We chose to drive because we wanted to see the rest of Crete. I would love to stay here again
- Angela (9/5): Superb - Location was wonderful and quiet in the evening. That we couldn't stay longer!
- Derek (10/5): Breathtaking, Beautiful, & one of the most magical places ever! Most sweetest & wonderful host! - Enough cannot be said about the wonderful Host for this location. Hearing about the History of the location and the building was an amazing plus to our stay and the view is beyond beautiful. The views from this most magical place are beyond words or even pictures, you must see them with your own eyes! Thank you for the experience!
- Bruce (8/5): Very good - Location was excellent and Irene was a great host.
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (9/5): Superb -
- Chenchu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lynne (10/5): Wish we could have stayed longer. - An oasis of calm in the busy Old Town. Simply lovely furnishings with full home features, our room in the old monastery could not have been more perfect.
- Paul (10/5): Lovely accommodation - The staff
- Liam (9/5): Beautiful location and a very unique stay. - This was our second visit attracted by its exquisite location
Irene is a very helpful owner with welcome refreshments and advice on restaurants and attractions.
Free easy parking nearby While it is an apartment, preparing food is not allowed and there are no facilities to cook apart from a coffee machine. This is clearly stated on booking so not unexpected, It’s not an issue if you plan to eat out and there are many excellent restaurants nearby.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sam (9/5): Superb -
