If you are going to Tanabe, stay here!! Such a cute and authentic place. The cake was also delicious!

- Sonia (10/5): A charming and cozy stay with a local feel, great for a relaxed visit to Tanabe. - I met Aya, who was very friendly and welcoming, which contributed to a very relaxed and comfortable stay. Two very delicious cakes were left for breakfast in the morning which was a very generous gesture. A very nice place to stay the night before the start of the Kumano Kodo. Highly recommended! Nothing negative to say. I would stay again without hesitation.

- Samantha (8/5): Charming and authentic in a traditional Japanese home - The proprietor was so welcoming and the hostel was charming, authentic, and very clean.
- Ingrid (8/5): A lovely place get stay and experience Japanese hospitality and charm. - Friendly authentic ryokan! As it is a ryokan rooms are not soundproof. As it only has two rooms it is t much of an issue and they provide earplugs.

- Brake (10/5): Best night's sleep in Japan - Thos was our first night's accomodation before hitting the Komono Kodo, and it was agreat introduction to a traditional Japanese Minshu. I had the best night's sleep there The walls are thin, fortunately we had quiet neighbours, maybe we were the noisy ones!
- Ella (9/5): -
- Van (7/5): -
- Marta (10/5): The host was really nice. We forgot our cream and she was so nice to bring to the train station with a piece of cake. Th - Very cute and comfy guesthouse. Everything you need. Authentic Japanese vibe. Everything perfect !!

- Sarah (10/5): - Location, staff Noise could be an issue
- Lance (10/5): Great place to stay, value for money, host was friendly and courteous, everything was explained clearly - Authentic traditional Japanese home Cant say much its just an old house thats about it
- Joshua (10/5): - Lovely staff that make you feel at home. Cosy stay, facilities great and breakfast was provided with a lovely note.
- Madison (10/5): Amazing guesthouse and cake! - Mayumi was such a wonderful host! She graciously allowed us to check in late after we missed our train connection. The room and guesthouse were beautiful and had lots of nice amenities for travelers. I appreciated the stocked bookshelf and water pitcher. Her chiffon cake was also so delicious!! Zero complaints here.
- Angela (9/5): Wonderful, charming rooms behind a small cafe, with a warm and welcoming host. Great value! - The place was an easy 10 min walk from the train station and very close to the rooster shrine, which is really amazing to see. Mayumi, our host was so kind and welcoming, and was able to accommodate our later check in time, which was 16:00. Loved that it was a traditional japanese house. And so modest and charming. It didn't bother us at all, since we brought ear plugs, but the screens separating rooms are made of paper, so transmit sound. We tried out best to be respectful and keep our voices to a whisper. We had no trouble sleeping and were very comfortable despite this. Just keep in mind as you are booking.
- Martin (10/5): - Super friendly and helpful host. And the Chiffon cake gift.
- Kiran (10/5): Overall, I loved my stay, despite the neighbors. Friendly staff. Convenient. Hot shower was awesome. I would definitely - Location and facilities were great. Walls are paper thin and my neighbors came in late and used the hair dryer at 11pm.
- Lisa (10/5): Parfait !

- Liying (10/5): - Old Japanese yado, this is a pretty nice place to stay for few nights. Tanabe was sooooo boring.
- Katja (10/5): -
- CELINE (7/5): Ok for 1 night - The lady is super nice and room is large Cleaness wasnt super good and the bathroom is pld and full of moisture
- John (10/5): - What a cool experience staying in a traditional room.
- Madeleine (9/5): Cute Japanese rooms, with cakes - We loved our stay at Ichie Cafe. The host is so friendly and accomodating. She is super helpful and speaks really good English. We loved the aesthetics of the room, Japanese style. You can hear the guests in the other room but it didnt bother us that much. You just have to be super quiet later at night and in the early morning. The chiffon cakes the host left for us for breakfast were so yum and perfect for our first day on the Kumano Kodo. Thank you. The bathroom needs an upgrade. Hoever, it was relatively clean.
- Julie (8/5): - The chiffon cake 'breakfast' was absolutely delicious and fresh, thank you. We really appreciated the two extra futon layers to sleep on.
- Alessandra (8/5): -
- Lucas (10/5): -
- Analyn (7/5): -
- Mary Ellen (8/5): Lovely staff and building, breakfast had room for improvement. - It was a ryokan, with a lovely garden. The included “breakfast” was just two pieces of chiffon cake. Hardly what you want on your first day walking the Kumano Kodo.
- Haimov (10/5): Highly recommended for those who look for an affordable and lovely place to stay in Tanabe - The room is in the traditional Japanese style, spacious and the mattress is comfortable. All the facility is clean and well equipped. Moreover, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The location is about 12min walk from the central station yet very close to the lovely beach of Tanabe.
And the cakes they make you in the morning are incredibly delicious.
- Gwyn (8/5): Great stay for the start of the Kumano Kodo! - Quiet neighborhood but conveniently located to restaurants and the train station. The staff were welcoming and delightful about explaining everything. Gave us contact information, in case of emergency. Delicious chiffon cakes were served for breakfast. I could see that having a rowdier group next door (since this was a small Minshuku) would make it very difficult to get rest and relax. Luckily, for us, the couple next door were very quiet and left very quickly on the morning so it was almost like we had the place to ourselves. Just a warning to anyone thinking of staying—there is a reason for earplugs being sold there!
- Emiko (10/5): -
- Giuseppe (8/5): - Clean facilities and welcoming staff.. bonus fresh cake in fridge A little noisy
- Christine (9/5): - Friendly, convenient. Comfortable.
I left an item at the hotel and was contacted and arrangements made- such wonderful service!
- Christian (9/5): Great Place to stay. Grab a coffee and a chat - Leckerer Kuchen und Kaffee.
- Rini (9/5): Nice place - The owner, the bed, feels like home. Need more coffee. 1 sashet per person is not enough for me. But its fine, there family mart close by.
- William (10/5): -
- William (10/5): -
- Vic (9/5): Quaint traditional accommodation with a wonderful host. - Beautiful old property that had everything we needed. We were very comfortable and well looked after during our stay the night before starting the Kumano Kodo. Easy walking distance to the station and the cakes supplied for breakfast were gladly enjoyed on the trail. Would recommend for those looking for simple, traditional accommodation.
- Yonayov (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is a sweetheart and will help you with anything you need, the place has a beautiful energy.
Highly recommended
- Lukas (8/5): Cozy experience in a friendly guest house - Super friendly Guesthouse.
It was a special experience for us to have a night in a traditional style room with tatami flooring and the paper sliding doors.
Everything was explained to us in English by the very nice staff.
- Jelmer (10/5): Exceptional - Very traditional house, with Classical Japanese decoration. Our host was so lovely and kind :)
- Wolfgang (9/5): Perfect authentic stay close to the beach - We were greeted with warmth and gratitude. The house is a Ryokan, so no western style. Very authentic. The landlady baked fresh cake for breakfast. There is nothing to complain.
- Gary (7/5): Comfortable Bedding, though can be noisy - Very helpful and friendly staff who prepare cakes for your morning breakfast. The bedding is some of the most comfortable I've slept with on the tatami mat. My room was near the cafe where the light was on throughout the night and I couldn't find the switch - I think it was kept on for those who came back late. The sliding doors can be quite noisy and you can hear the people snoring in the nearby rooms. The air conditioner was old and not very cold. There is only one key to get in the building so you need to operate a lockbox and there are no locks on the room doors.
- Jakub (10/5): Exceptional - It was great!
- Lewis (8/5): Very good - Adorable place. Good location. Lovely staff Paper walls mean you have to be very quiet at night and hope your fellow guests don't snore.
- Price (7/5): Good - Hosts were so lovely and welcoming and gave me so much good information. Thank you! Also the homemade chiffon cake was delicious The bathroom and shower were a little less clean but this may have been because of the other guests. Other facilities were good
- Andrew (10/5): Lovely place, very gracious host, loved our stay here, would stay again! - Lovely place, quiet, comfortable, very convenient while walking the Kumano Kodo. Nothing
- Susan (8/5): Very good -
- Christina (8/5): Very good - The cake in the morning was delicious! The walls are quite thin, so you can hear the other guests very easily.
- Harriet (7/5): Good -
- Danilo (7/5): Still good value for money - Location and reasonable pricing. Beddings don’t smell fresh
- Catherine (8/5): It was a one night stay - Amazing host. Her English was so good. Our breakfast was amazing too, a home baked cake she baked and packaged for our early start. Thank you! You can hear your neighbors
- Henry (10/5): Delicious complementary pound cake and atmospheric washitsu! -
- Julie (8/5): Very good -
(10/5): Exceptional - The host Mayumi-San is a very kind person and the cake are delicious.
- Agathe (9/5): Gorgeous tradition Japanese house and excellent chiffon cake - I had a lovely stay at Ichie café, the traditional house is old yet gorgeous, with a view on a wonderful Japanese garden. The walls are of course quite thin, hopefully, the place only has two rooms so the noise is kept to a minimum.
I had the nice surprise of discovering Ichie café baked fresh chiffon cakes and packed it so we could take them with us on our way to Kumano kodo. And it was delicious!! Thanks again, I would easily come back !
- Vines (10/5): Wonderful experience - Great place to stay. Super friendly. Competitive price!
- Yoram (10/5): Exceptional - Nice location and room Bath was a bit rundown
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - The personal touches and lots of helpful information and tips provided by the host were really appreciated. She was so welcoming and responsive, it was fantastic. Would love to stay again one day. Minor point - Breakfast was light with no gluten free option. Not a big issue but would have been nice to have a GF option.
- Jaime (9/5): Superb - The rooms are inside a cafetería, it's a lovely place, rooms are fine for a nice Japan experience, and the garden view is great to enjoy the stay.
Good and clean bathroom. The walls are really thin, some of them are paper panels so you can hear almost everything on the cafeteria kitchen or next room.
Also, no locks in room, it's a pretty safe place but when I went out , I took the important stuff with me just in case
- Fan (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (9/5): Superb - Located with a small bakery specializing in Chiffon cake. Very comfortable and well worth the price. In the morning, we were gifted with 4 pieces of cake. It was delicious! Friendly staff made us feel welcome. Highly recommend.
- Hiketheworld (10/5): An ideal location to begin the Kumano Kodo. Super comfy futons. - Host was welcoming and amazing. Sent us off with personalized breakfast bag as we headed to Kumano for first day of the hike. They helped us forward our luggage to Hotel Urashime. Loved everything.
- Gyula (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terence (6/5): Pleasant -
