Guest Reviews
- Stephen (10/5): - A lovely hotel with an amazing restaurant. Excellent for a special occasion.
- Jill (10/5): Great location, stay & food - Visually the place makes a very good impact. Dinner, the food was excellent as were the staff.
Breakfast … we’d booked it at check in. We turned up to breakfast and there was nothing booked , the service at breakfast was okay , we did have to case up something.
But overall we had a very good stay and would return.
- Christopher (10/5): - Delightful stay at a charming hotel where the staff and facilities are second to none!!
Will definitely be returning.
5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Nicola (10/5): - Great hotel in a beautiful location. Good restaurant and wine menu
- P1513LYandrewh (6/5): Decide on what hotel you want to be, as could be the perfect spa break. - The feedback given here was also discussed with management when we left. The hotel needs to decide how to prioritise guests that are staying at the hotel, as in our opinion unfortunately an event is #1, ‘locals’ coming for the day #2, then guests a distant #3. I think this hotel would be a perfect spa break for midweek and a 5 score. Hotel was so busy that on saturday there was nowhere for guests to sit as bad weather. Food is excellent. Hotel, spa and setting the same. Spa should be free though for residents! Friendly service staff, albeit quite young.
- NorthStar46278972578 (6/5): Beautiful hotel, pity about the management of it. - A physically beautiful and comfortable hotel & Spa with friendly and courteous staff but a real lack of Management 'presence'.
Complaint re rug trip hazard in bedroom never was dealt with in the 4 nights we were there. Room was not serviced at all on one day.
No robe or towel was available on 1 of 2 visits to the Spa - had to fish a robe out of dirty linen basket.
Food was tasty but too elaborate - did not recognise veg served with the plaice, which was the only main fish dish, other than a pasta one. Menu never changed.
Dining staff were very pleasant but inattentive.
No obvious system for feeding back comments direct to the hotel.
Not good value for money.
- SuffolkEssexGirl (10/5): An absolutely brilliant place to visit. - Fantastic night stay and use of Spa facilities.
The Marquis is of very high standard, exceptionally clean and well maintained throughout. Appeared recently decorated and decorated very tastefully.
Our room was spacious and very comfortable bed with lovely robe and slippers. Air con was great in the heatwave too. Had a very comfortable sleep.
Food and drink were of a very high standard. We had dinner and breakfast. To enjoy eating on the outside upper terrace was wonderful and the views were stunning.
The spa was so clean and luxurious. Indoor and outdoor pool and very soft loungers. Nice robes and large soft towels. Modern drinks area with hot and cold drinks and really clean changing facilities with Dyson hairdryers.
All the staff were absolutely amazing, helpful, polite and friendly. Especially Joanna at the front desk, Charlie in the spa and Joshua in the restaurant to name but a few that made for a brilliant stay.
Will definitely be returning.
A five star stay.
- K A (10/5): - Beautiful hotel set in stunning location
- Sparklystargirl (8/5): Birthday Meal - Visited the restaurant for my husband’s birthday. The staff were very helpful with my food intolerances, very informative. The burger was overcooked though, pretty dry, hard and tasteless. I was offered a free dessert, which was delicious! It didn’t feel as good as when we visited last year. Beautiful location and views.
- Howard (10/5): - Lovely hotel, modern and clearly lots of investment. Nice gardening on grounds, comfortable beds and clean bathrooms. Enjoyed the dining and bar areas. Helpful staff
- Sightseer59636120857 (4/5): Inattentive Service - Went for Sunday afternoon tea. Food was brought out quickly and tasted fine, however sandwiches and scones were dry. Drinks order didn't arrive twice and wrong milk was brought to the table. Waiter didn't ask for our tea order and had to be repeatedly flagged down for orders. Not up to the standard of a supposed high end venue. Suspect there's a staffing/ management issue. Would like to give it another try, but won't be recommending.
- emilyrT2313CM (6/5): Lovely but could be better…. - We went for Sunday lunch as a family, 2 adults, 2 children. Restaurant was very busy. We were told we could have some drinks on the terrace as we were early. We sat out there and it was empty, only for staff to be stood talking, we had to go and ask for menus etc, go and ask again for another drink etc. Staff are quite young and quite unattentive and oblivious to people’s needs it seems.
Food was nice, however restaurant is quite cramped, felt like we were out to dinner with the people next to us! Beautiful setting and building, just needs to get the service better in my opinion. We will return and give it another go but I am in no rush…
- 336jemimaw (2/5): Tatty grubby furniture and food all over the seat & floor. - I had booked a session in the spa followed by an early supper with a friend.
The spa is elegant and well run.
However we couldn’t really enjoy the outdoor pool as a loud and pretty drunk bunch of youngsters was out on the balcony above the pool. It felt odd with them looking down on us.
We had been looking forward to our meal. We were lead to a table, but the seat and floor was covered in broken up bread roll and chips under the table. The waiter brushed the bread off the seat and gestured for me to sit down. I said I didn’t want to sit at a table with food all over the floor. He went to get a brush and we asked to be seated at another table rather than stand there, with only one table in use.
However I could see the ripped lining of the banquets hanging down to the floor and the corners had stuffing coming out. Really very tatty.
I counted 8 FOH staff not doing much when the restaurant was essentially empty, but no one had swept under the tables since lunch service.
All the staff said ‘cheers’ as they left the table. It seems like there’s been no training.
Untrained staff and tatty grubby furniture
I certainly wouldn’t go back.
- Hannah (8/5): - Lovely stay for the 1st day of married life, beautiful venue amd room
- Ralph (10/5): Very nice place to spend - We had a lovely stay at the Marquis, our suite was lovely and had a private west facing balcony so we watched a lovely sunset over the river.
Dinner was excellent, as was the wine, highly recommended.
Staff were all really friendly and helpful.
- Paulr (10/5): - excellent stay especially meal in the cellar thankyou.
- L7204HMolivias (10/5): incredible way to wrap up our wedding - Where to start.. thankyou to all the staff at the marquis you are all brilliant. We felt incredibly welcome from the moment we turned up. We was taken to our room which was so so beautiful. Our balcony overlooked the outside pool and we had front row seats for a beautiful sunset. The restaurant is stunning with a country side feel. The food was amazing, highly recommend the duck starter and steak main. We was absolutely stuffed and sadly couldn't order desert. The staff also kindly gave us a congratulation dessert to share with a glass of champagne each which was really a nice touch. We both slept like logs, the pillows are very comfy and the bed was nice and firm. The next day we got ready for breakfast, again that was very tasty and cooked lovely. Afterwards we indulged in the spa facilities. The full body massage was a dream, we both felt so chilled and relaxed. Afterwards we went and sat round the stunning pool, we used the jacuzzi and sauna. We truly felt amazing after our stay with The Marquis. We will absolutely be returning. Cant wait to come back and stay. Thankyou for everything. Olivia and Matt :) x
- Wells2014 (10/5): What a Gem - Omg amazing Spa/overnight stay. The attention to details amazing & nothing too much trouble for friendly staff.
The Spa was fantastic, hot & cold drinks on tap. Good secure dressing room.
Went with group of friends & really could not fault it. Treatments were amazing & staff so efficient & friendly.
All meals excellent & vegan/vegetarian menu had very good choices.
Really couldn’t fault it at all. Will definitely visit again.
- 740clairen (2/5): Poor Sunday service….. only wanted a wine in peace. - Poor service. Arrived 1245pm ignored at bar whilst staff argued how to make a Bloody Mary. Some kind of shift manager swooped in handed bar maid a few drinks orders who repeatedly moaned about this once manager had gone. Not professional. Headed to reception to see if we could use bar at other end, was treated by a petite blonde lady who had a mouthful of her lunch and tried to explain the lack of bar service was due to event taking place. Not sure if this really is a customers problem surely more staff when an event is taking place. Time 1.15pm still no drink. 2nd bar staff couldn’t find the Pinot Blush so went off to find it 1.25pm we left. Still no drink. An utter disgrace for a so called high end venue. Venue itself it’s beautiful but serious lack of attentive professionalism amongst the staff is evident and really needs addressing. The attitude of the short blonde lady in reception who we had clearly disturb her lunch was appalling. Front of house no way! She should not be in a job in a venue of this level.
- kylemE3477YS (2/5): Painful - Burns night. It was fairly busy.
Family of four. We are placed on a table of six, felt sorry for the couple who wanted to be on their own.
Service so slow. Seated at 7pm, starter at 8.10. Mains just after 9, lukewarm. Walked out at 10.15 with no sign of dessert.
Food was brought out by table numbers, so 17 got their starter as table 1 had easily finished.
Music a joke. Speakers had blown half way through the evening.
Bagpipes did a lap of honour to welcome the haggis. Then he was gone.
The food was quality but was not worth that wait.
Settled bill, was smiled at and acknowledged it was slow service.
If you can’t deal with it, don’t do it.
The lift was broken. So a 70yr old asthmatic was pushed to their limits.
The noise in the dining area just echoes around a lovely space. So it’s deafening after everyone’s had a drink.
I’m young enough to deal with it.
But most wouldn’t.
- M (6/5): - Overall a lovely venue food was excellent and facilities good. Service I felt was a little slow and our room was not ready when we checked in
- johnhB1271AB (10/5): Brilliant. - Went there for Sunday lunch for sons birthday celebration. The roast beef we had was the best I have ever tasted. Service between first and second course a bit slow but generally fantastic experience. I am a retired chef and not connected to this premises.
- Donna (10/5): - Our first stay and we enjoyed every minute. Stunning setting, welcoming and friendly staff, excellent food. We will be back!
- Jordan (10/5): - Lovely
- 467douglash (10/5): Great transformation - I have returned to the marquis the first time since it has fully reopened after their extensive renovation into a fully equipped hotel, spa and restaurant. I am really impressed by the owners investment and the results it has achieved. The staff are very well trained and respectful. Their winter menu is excellent and will return soon.
- Sharon (10/5): Excellent Food - Wonderful, relaxing overnight stay, excellent food, great staff, would definitely come back and certainly recommend a visit, whether staying or just for the food and ambience.
- 342filippom (4/5): Charged wrongly and refused to refund me - Beautiful place, I have been many times, but then the facilities started not working very often:
lift not working, electricity and hot water out for half a day, SPA out of order….
And when I went visit with my family, I got assigned a different room from the one booked (second floor with lift not working with 2 strollers…) and charged 50£ for an extra bed that was already in the reservation and for breakfast that we did not had.
When I noticed and told the staff they refused to refund me, saying it was Expedia’s fault and not their….
They have a swimming pool but they charge you 35£ every time you go even if you are hotel guest… it seems they are very keen to charge for everything they can, which is not what you expect from an hotel that aspires to be premium…
Real pity to see this kind of behaviour and treatment towards people that value the place: I was a very loyal customer but I will not go anymore and I don’t recommend it either after these latest experiences
- indiar0sej (4/5): So disappointing… - Taken over by directors who are happy to take your money and ignore you after errors during stay. The least relaxing experience which ruined a big birthday..
I have long been coming here since before it was extended into the site it is now and as a family have spent significant money here on wedding stays, Mother’s Day lunches and all sorts but my experience in Sep 2024 was extremely disappointing..
I spent just shy of £500 for overnight, spa access for two, dinner and breakfast for my partners 40th birthday and I wish I hadn’t bothered. The grounds and spa are stunning, there is no question, but issued to be resolved if you wish to stay overnight…
1. Arrived after a long journey from Heathrow coming back from work, and excited to go to our favourite place. Greeted by helpful reception staff and welcomed the suggestion of £70 to use the spa, for added relaxation. You have a slot booked and not able to use for the duration of your stay. Whilst not ideal for the costly price, understood as the spa is small.
2. Our pre-booked dinner table took twenty minutes for water to arrive and an hour for one shared baked Camembert to arrive which meant our dinner then came in quick succession straight after and we were unable to finish everything before our booked spa spot which we had to rush off to. The servers were polite and apologised for this but this was not ideal or relaxing for us, like we wanted.
3. Spa is stunning and tranquil and we were so excited to let go of dinner and relax but we were unable to enjoy it due to a family of 5/6 other guests shouting across the pool like we were at their house/pool talking about all things negative in the world, including tax on a Saturday night! They complained the hot tub was too hot to a member of staff - it was not - and we could even hear their entire negative conversation from the sauna. We even went to the outdoors pool in freezing temperatures to try and escape it for a little while. There is a section where you can get hot drinks but unfortunately there was no milk left for us to enjoy a hot drink either.. We had about 15 mins, after they left, of our 1hr 15 booking, to enjoy the tranquil spa and it was so disappointing.
4. The rooms are beautiful but we were woken up every few minutes - despite the door being closed - from our bathroom lights clicking and turning on an off due to broken automatic lights. The room above ours also had a loud toilet when it was flushed and we could hear other guests walking around. We appreciate Marquis cannot stop other people walking around at night but we don’t expect broken automatic lights or upstairs toilets disturbing guests for the money we paid. You don’t even get that in budget hotels. We were so tired and fed up the next day, we cancelled the birthday lunch and drove home to catch up on sleep, which ruined my partners birthday.
I voiced my concerns to Joanna at reception when I paid to leave and also followed up with two emails, no response and then called to chase up a response from a manager or director. Here we are SEVEN weeks later still with no response..!!
It is pretty clear the Marquis are only driven by taking clients money regardless of their experience, which is not the Marquis I have known before it changed.
As an engaged couple, whose family had their wedding here, we were considering this as our venue and spending further substantial money here (my partners big birthday was a good opportunity for us to experience), but with how things have been handled since our stay, we have reconsidered.
Things won’t always be perfect, things happen but ignoring clients after a variety of unwelcomed experiences which could have been resolved with a gesture of goodwill in some capacity, says a lot about how they run their business.
Beautiful grounds, front of house staff wonderful but lots to be ironed out domestically and higher management need to review how they wish to reflect their business better. I wouldn’t spend money to stay overnight here again.
- Donald (10/5): Outstanding staff at the Marquis - The Marquis has just completed renovations, and while there were a few teething problems, the staff was wonderful. They could not have done more to make our stay wonderful. Special shout out to David, Ryann, Lucy, Emma, Kate, Annabelle, Carmin, and everyone else we came in contact with, all were wonderful.
The spa and pool were not even mentioned as they just opened, the facility is one of the best we ever visited, again with the staff to match.
We are looking forward to our next stay.
- jeremyhW5860BN (10/5): Amazing spa - We’ve been to several spas throughout East Anglia and this is by far the best, my wife had a facial while I sat and had a few drinks and soaked up the surroundings. The staff at the spa couldn’t have been more welcoming, the treatment itself was amazing and the whole place has been built to an incredibly high standard and exudes luxury. The location was great just a short distance from the A12. Definitely worth a visit.
- NashySheffield (8/5): Fab fit out . Slightly odd vibe - Wow a lot of money has been spent to refurb this place . Room 3 was stunning . Clean solid amazing bathroom , gorgeous bedding lots of lovely touches . Very five star accommodation. Restful sleep .
Check in Staff friendly ish but tried the extra £20 for the “extra guest “
On check in . We had booked a room of 2 and a room for one they initially said we had only booked 2 x single occupancy . They conceded we were correct next day and backed down . Seems a common theme reading The reviews .
Dinner good but lacked a little five star service. Service was efficient but just a bit stand offish it was almost as if they were trained to shut down conversations .
Oysters were SO FRESH and tasty but came with zero garnish not even lemon … never been served like this before . Not sure if intentional
- jac1962 (10/5): A marvellous Hotel but does have some tiny issues. - We went to the Marquis for an overnight stay, we stayed in the Cornwallis suit which was lovely but it had a few small issues the patio door was very difficult to open, the room did not have a fridge, there are no slippers supplied and the safe didn't work which when you are paying 350 pounds for one night B&B is really not acceptable, the restaurant on the other hand was spectacular the food is superb the waiting staff are all very professional and courteous and nothing is too much trouble. All in all this hotel is a gem of a place and I can't wait to go back.
- marcsF3802UM (10/5): Perfect - The food was beautiful, we had baked Camembert to start. The beef wellington for mains and then textures of chocolate (was on the specials) and a coconut and tropical pavlova.
All washed down with a fantastic bottle of rose. Service was good not intrusive. Sat outside with fantastic views
- 952suzannen (6/5): 60th Birthday Family lunch - Limited menu choice and overcooked food left us a little underwhelmed. Had chosen the Marquis for this special event after a previous pleasant experience but wont be going back. Gave this feedback to the business but havent heard anything back.
- kevinhV9446BH (10/5): Amazing experience - I cannot rate a high enough review for this stunning place.
The attention to detail of this stunning place is impeccable.
We went for my birthday celebration with family and we truly felt spoilt, the food was amazing.
Thoroughly recommend! ****
- Helen (6/5): Beautiful hotel, shame about the food. - A lovely comfortable hotel with beautiful decor and warm friendly staff.
Rooms are not sound proofed- so you are able to hear a lot of noise around dinner time.
The room it self was beautiful, with a comfortable bed and cosy lighting.
The bathroom was nice- the shower was wonderful.
Unfortunately our trip was let down by the food!
My husband had a full English breakfast, in which we did have to complain as the sausage appeared to be raw.
They apologised profusely, took our plates and spoke to the chef, on his return he told us the sausage was probed and was certainly cooked, however the sausage was pink as they have pink preserve in them!
Is this a thing? I certainly haven’t come across this before. Surely a good sausage wouldn’t need “pink preserve” in it !
£4 was take off my husband’s £20 breakfast as good will- even though he only had 20% of his breakfast due to being put off.
- Belinda (10/5): Amazing - Fantastic place to stay. We stayed in the bridal suite on the night after our wedding and it was beautiful.
- Edward (10/5): Lovely location and views. - Lovely location & view, good size rooms, good service and nice food at dinner and breakfast. Food was towards the pricey end but it was worth it. We will definitely return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Definitely a wedding night to remember! - We spent our wedding night at the Marquis, it was the best night to end a perfect day. The venue is absolutely stunning, we stayed in the Cornwallis Suite. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a romantic get away, with amazing views from the balcony. All staff from the front desk to the chefs in the kitchen were all so nice, I’ve never stayed in a hotel with a more welcoming feel to it. Thank you to everyone there for making it so special for us.
- Chloe (10/5): - Lovely hotel
- Mark (10/5): - Beautiful restaurant/patio area overlooking river/fields.
- Pauline (10/5): - The Marquis is excellent. The food and service is amazing. Rooms are really clean and comfortable. We will definately be going again.
- Jenkins (10/5): - Great staff
Great facility, location
Great food, wine
Just a must visit location
- Victoria (10/5): - The hotel was beautiful, the room was clean and warm. We had a fantastic stay, just wish we could of stayed for longer! The only negative I have is that there was building work going on which we weren’t aware of before we booked, however we stayed over a bank holiday so it didn’t effect our stay.
- sarah (8/5): Beautiful but over priced - Unfortunately not dog friendly
Parking quite away particularly as weather was wet
Room was lovely no complaints but expensive
Food over priced especially as portions not very big so didn’t stay for breakfast as bacon sandwich was £22🙃
- Sam (10/5): - Fantastic first stay at The Marquis! Was welcomed straight away with a room upgrade. The room was spotlessly clean and very spacious. Highly recommend eating in the restaurant, food was delicious! We will be back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent service and food - It was amazing, the food was beyond belief and the room was so comfortable. Apart from the access from the walk from the car park due to the building work, everything was just perfect.
- Mark (10/5): - Great hotel
Great location
Great staff
Food lovely
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Very comfortable bed and room was quiet despite facing the main road. The staff very friendly. We were dissatisfied in our meal the quality was not up to the last time we were here
- Lee (10/5): - We stayed in the ground floor room, separate from the main building and it was superb. One recommendation would be to have some plants or something on the patio to keep it private from the people on the main terrace.
- Colin (8/5): - The staff were very helpful and friendly. Good quality of service. Good quality building and room presentation. Good location. Overall vib, very positive.
Access to rooms difficult for the less mobile. Distance from car park to reception too long and without cover. Building works on property redevelopment gave a poor first impression. Breakfast too expensive and no simple/basic choices. No bespoke storage for bikes.
- Patricia (10/5): Short Break - We spent two midweek nights at the Marquis. Major building works were being carried out. This did not effect our stay. We booked an evening meal for one night. The food was very good but overpriced. The wine was also good but again overpriced, in our opinion. We did have breakfast. Because we didn’t want a large one, we chose two sweeter dishes. But again, we just thought it was on the expensive side. Our room was lovely. Bed & pillows both comfy. The shower was very good. The staff were friendly. It was difficult to get anyones attention when we were on the lower terrace to order drinks. There were staff about but their attention was elsewhere. Would we stay again, possibly.
- Gary (10/5): Can’t wait to come back - We had a 1 night stay at The Marquis.
The food was amazing, both dinner and breakfast were cooked to a very high standard and both delicious.
The staff were all lovely and couldn’t do enough to make our stay comfortable.
The room was immaculately clean and very comfortable. I woke up feeling more relaxed and pain free than I do in my own bed.
The setting is stunning and although they have building work going on for their next adventure it was very discreet and barely noticeable.
We will definitely be back.
- Gene (10/5): - Lovely room , beautiful view , delicious dinner ,comfy bed !
- Stephen (10/5): - All of the people are very friendly , cheerful , happy , excellent choices for breakfast and evening meals. All areas are very clean indeed. Would highly recommend this hotel.
- Ian (10/5): - A wonderful venue, full of charm, well managed and immaculately clean
- MICHAEL (8/5): - the room was small and overpriced, all food at an additional cost but very good, the staff were excellent throughout.
- Caroline (10/5): A bit of luxury! - Beautiful room, immaculate hotel. Near to lovely walking country at the Stour estuary - and pretty towns and villages. Huge portions at breakfast!
- Mark (10/5): - Hotel great, staff brilliant
lovely location
- Margaret (10/5): Quality all the way - From tastefully decorated rooms with top quality linens to an exquisite dining experience, this hotel scores in all categories. It was so good we changed our plans and stayed longer.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Service was amazing. The food was good, but the portions were way too large for the style of dining. Room was well presented.
- Ian (10/5): Perfect for a one night get away! - Wonderful one night stay. Fantastic service from all staff.
Great food and great room. Thanks.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Disappointing. - Unfortunately I was overall disappointed with my stay. While staff were friendly and helpful and can the building beautiful, the cleanliness of our room was quite poor. The bath had a good 15/20 hairs in it from the previous guest, the bottom bed sheet had a hole in it and the duvet cover had a stain on it. I also found a couple of hairs in the bed.
The beautiful bathroom had a gathering of 20+ dead flies and dust on a ledge and the shower trap was too disgusting to think about! The toilet brush was also awful. The toilet had a very poor flush, one of the bath towels was very shabby, almost threadbare and one tea cup had a crack in it. My room was out the front and while the mattress was very comfy and of good quality, I had a bad nights sleep with a fair amount of road noise and other noise from the restaurant and other guests.
I wouldn’t stay at this hotel again or recommend it to others.

Rooms spotless.

- Simon (10/5): Highly recommended - Great boutique hotel with a great restaurant and lovely atmosphere
- Jane (10/5): - Beautiful hotel and great service.
Our room was on the road side of the hotel. There was a large group of people using the patio to smoke, so a little noisy at times.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Hotel is in a lovely setting, nice views. Room was a little small
- Verified traveler (10/5): - First class hotel with fantastic staff breakfast was excellent
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Comfy bed, large shower, excellent breakfast menu. Parking also available.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Beautiful rural setting. Great attention to detail in the recent refurbishment but a pity that didn't apply to all the staff. Some were very good but others needed either more training or commitment. Restaurant standards varied according to which chef was on duty. Got the impression that overseeing by management was wanting.
- Elizabeth (8/5): Marquis of Cornwallis - It’s a beautifully done place. Excellent staff. Only issue was that the rooms are above the bar/restaurant area and so until the bar shuts it’s pretty noisy for the rooms above.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the food was excellent
- James (10/5): - We stayed here for a wedding on the weekend and my only complaint is that we could not stay at the hotel longer!! A beautiful location. The service was exceptional and the food at the restaurant was delicious (healthy portions too!), would highly recommend.
