- Ian (2/5): Won’t be staying here again and I use hotels in St Albans every week - Location was good Noise from the main road and other residents. Cannot get a VAT receipt after numerous attempts via Torrington Hall. If anyone staying requires a receipt for expense claim then don’t bother staying. They never return any correspondence so I’m now £123 out of pocket.

- LeslyH (9/5): Centrally-located, comfortable and spacious rooms, bonus of free car park - This was our second one night stay at Torrington Hall; the price is comparable to other hotels in the city, but with the added bonus, for us, of a free car park, as we use St Albans as a break in a very long journey. This time our room (Verulam) was on the ground floor, at the back, and very quiet. The bed was very comfortable, the big radiator was a plus as it was a very cold day, the mini-fridge and tea/coffee facilities are good, with UHT milk and sachets of hot chocolate also provided alongside a selection of different teas. The shower/WC were off a hallway leading to an external door, which was colder, but the shower had plenty of hot water, and lovely fluffy towels. It's about five minutes uphill walk into the centre of the town, with all its pubs, bars, shops and restaurants and, of course, historical sights. There are also some good real ale pubs at the other end of Albert Street. Moka Indian restaurant just up the hill is very good. Nothing really.

- Clive (5/5): Nice video, shame about the reality - Great location, comfy bed Cleaning was superficial with obvious areas of quite unpleasant dirt (for example, edges of windows & shower screen) the room was long overdue decoration with chiped, cracked and flaking paint, there were no curtains but just wooden box-shutters that looked cold & prison-like and didn't shut the light out because of all the cracks between them (so the room could never be dark before sunset/after sunrtise, which means for most of the night in spring/summer), and total lack of soundproofing - old single-glazed sash windows on ground floor by main road, and could hear every footstep from the room above, every sound/word spoken in the communal hallway/stairs.

I had the nicest room with a view of the cathedral but the only downside is you have to walk two flights of stairs; but to be expected in England! The lobby and room is a bit worn and could use some more updating; like new flooring -but the bathroom was nicely updated and the room was large, nice picture window and very comfortable bed.

I was unable to access the property and had to stay elsewhere. I received no email and the phone number on the door was unobtainable. A kind person who was booked there tried another number and an answerphone told her the office was manned Monday to Friday. I was booked in for the Saturday.

- Steven (7/5): Pleasant stay - Nice room, spacious, nice en suite bathroom, calm and quiet. Access: I was informed there would be a text or email sent c. 48 hours before arrival. Nothing arrived. I had to call the owner from the train on my way there, but then instructions were clear and all was fine. No breakfast included — I hadn't seen a reference to this on Booking.com (did I miss something?). The explanation being that there are plenty of local eateries, cafes etc. However, when you are there on business and needing an early breakfast, that is not such a plus. It serves the host rather than the client, I would say.

- Helen (10/5): Beautiful Victorian building in the heart of St Albans, huge sumptuous rooms and very peaceful - I found that incredibly difficult. That was the only negative part of the stay. The door code was given but one needed to press Clear first and the Enter button looked the same as the Zero. Once in the huge and gorgeous hallway, the instruction was that the key boxes were on a window shelf. I looked in various rooms for a long time before I met a man coming downstairs who was able to tell me they were in fact right behind the front door. I really think these instructions need to be better. I had been delayed on my journey and only had minutes in my room before needing to leave for a London show and a lot of it was spent in the hallway!

- Annamaria (9/5): Comfortable, central, lovely building - Nice location just across the street from one of the entrances to the cathedral and a three-minute (uphill) walk from cafes and restaurants in the centre. An elegant old house refurbished to modern comfort standards. Large room, high ceilings, nice view. Check-in works exactly as described. Use the street called Belmont Hill to drive on to the property. Warm on a cold winter day, good heating, lighting, bathroom. The kitchenette has everything you need for heating up your dinner. Coffee and tea in room and also in the downstairs lounge.

We booked two rooms for our daughter to meet up with us from London (no trains from/to York in February so car and parking was essential). The rooms were spotless, large and very comfortable, located on the high street so close to restaurants , coffee shops and Sainsbury’s. Would have been nicer with a reception and bar/lounge but it would have been more expensive. Access using a code and then key boxes was fine if a little impersonal. We will stay here again, very comfortable. Will bring cutlery and bowls for breakfast next time(and wine glasses). Travelling into London via St Albans City caught us out, we tapped in and out of the station and received a large charge, (under dispute), so make sure you buy a ticket if using. We were allowed to park for the full three days for our two night stay which was really helpful. Out bins were not emptied or room serviced after our first night which was a surprise, with no catering we had a bit more packaging than usual and bins were overflowing.

The lock boxes for the room keys are hidden to the left of the entrance, with a fairly vague description. You have to stand to the side to see them on the inside of a window frame. A photo would have been ideal.

- David (7/5): Lovely historic in town property with precious parking - We like historic properties and this is a good example. The antique furniture pieces in the room were all very suitable Although was a bad mix of old and new in our room with a little care and a couple more antique/vintage furniture pieces substituted for the out of place sale room contemporary pieces would have meant we would have enjoyed the ambience much more. It has virtual reception. Although it all worked it's a bit soulless but presumably keeps the price down. The car park in-front of the property is a bit neglected with lots of fallen needles gone rotten which stick to your shoes en mass then trail into the building. The tarmac Just needs a good sweep which would bust improve it appearance as well as avoid the trail of debris into the property. The car park is horrendous to find from the very busy main road. You end up driving past it because the small entrance to the side just is not visible from the main road even when you've been given instructions and driver a long way round the block to get to it the sign still isn't very clear. I think with a bit of pre-warning about this it would've saved us 20 minutes trailing around trying to find it, and wasting the much appreciated good time of the owner on the phone trying to help us .

- Alan (8/5): Lovely Historic Building - Lovely to stay in a historic building that was built for the Mayor of St Albans in 1882 for his retirement and one where a notable scientist once lived. The room that we stayed in this time (Sopwith) was smaller than the one we were given last time we stayed here but the amenities were all provided and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was modern and the shower was excellent. The key code reader for entering Torrington Hall was difficult to operate because the numbers at the side of the keys were very small and worn away. The lockbox inside the door was difficult to open after the key code had been input. We both tried to input the code to open it because we thought we had got the wrong numbers - we hadn't. It was just difficult. The channels on the TV were difficult to find. The two remotes appeared to contradict each other for the channels available.

Front door code numbers need to be re-marked as they were difficult to read. Inadequate lighting on the outside steps from the car park to the front door.
- Tina (10/5): Just because i have wrote two negative comments ..my stay was excellent as always 😊 - Had the same problem as we did the last time ..because of inconsiderate parking it was difficult to find a space … In the room Eleanor the live tv was all American channels would have preferred English ..

- Patricia (7/5): Attractive building - It is a beautiful period building with lovely rooms. The bed was comfortable too. The floor above creaked any time someone moved which was frequently during the night. Also the shower dripped all night.

- Chris (8/5): Nice room in grand building, but expensive and not manned - Nice big room, en suite, with desk, and fridge. Grand building with interesting decor and fittings. Great location on the high street/main hill in town. Kitchen for use if you want it. Keybox entry was a little complicated, and I'm short on patience for this mode of letting accommodation these days. Shared kitchen gives the feel of a youth hostel. Expensive for what it is, but that's St Albans. I'm rarely going to give a good review for this town.
- Chris (8/5): Nice building, nice room, overpriced in my view, no other view available - As for my previous stay, it was a nice room in a grand building. Fridge in room is a nice touch. Kitchen in the corridor if needed. Keybox entry bugs me. No view from window. Don't think there was a desk in this room.
