Guest Reviews
- Philip (2/5): Try to avoid - Nothing much I get the no frills, however, I have spent better nights in a tent in Kenya. Mike is a lovely bloke (landlord) however I felt the hotel was tired and smelt of old cigarettes, the shared bathroom had a shower that dribbled out, and in my opinion was not that clean. I was taking all my electronic items and personal items to work everyday as i didn't feel the hotel was secure, on the instance where the condiments were changed in my room, on my return the door was open. The beds were awful.
I did not eat, or drink in the bar so cannot comment.
- Anthony (1/5): -
- Ben (1/5): Filthy and in desperate need of renovation, preferably with a bulldozer. -
- Audra (7/5): Thank you! - A quirky pub off the beaten path! They have some great local events. Make sure if you are in the area to go to Unplug the Wood on Tuesday for a fun acoustic jam and open mic! The owner is super nice and friendly and the locals there are fun to get to know!
- Roland (4/5): -
- TerryLeese (5/5): - Friendly staff Could be cleaner
- Tom (8/5): Very friendly pub - I stayed at the Lion Brewery overnight. Mike was very friendly and helpful, a really nice guy. The accommodation is basic but absolutely fine. The bar area is really nice, very homely with lots of photos of previous events held there over the years. There is plenty of free parking right outside. I would definitely stay there again.
- Kirstie (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic small English pub with a wonderful Landlord and staff. Brilliant live music and a delicious home cooked breakfast.
- Jennings (8/5): Very good - Friendly welcome.
Nice view of recreation park.
Good parking. Easy to find from motorway m3.
Good shower, and
Spacious shared bathroom.
Remember the bathroom is shared. Cleanliness Good, but need attention to detail if possible like skirting boards.
- Oyeniran (2/5): Very poor - Car park Bad facilities and room
- Peter (1/5): Bad -
- Janine (7/5): Friendly and comfortable but basic . It was very good value - I travelled to attend the live music jam which was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room was clean . The bed was comfortable and there was ample tea and coffee and clean towels . It was great to stay in the venue where the music was The radiator in the room didn’t work but a fan heater was provided. The bedside lamp and clock didn’t work which wasn’t really a problem. There was a shared bathroom.
- Lee (5/5): Passable -

- Linda (10/5): Close to reletives and broke up our journey - It’s oldie worldie lots of character
The owner was very helpful and a laugh to get along with made you feel welcome and the breakfast was fantastic It didn’t have enough plug sockets and bedside lamp
- Mike (8/5): Very good -
- Krystal (6/5): Pleasant -
- Amtul (1/5): Our trip was very uncomfortable - We did not like it at all Carpet was dirty towels were ripped bedsheets weren’t clean mattress were uncomfortable no fridge or other facilities And also property was smelly
- David (8/5): Very good - friendliness nothing
- Barbara (5/5): Passable -
- David (7/5): Good -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Andre (5/5): Adequate - It was a good price and location for what we needed. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Bedding was fresh and room large. A really lovely Indian restaurant opposite ! We didn't eat at the property, so cannot comment on food. The facilities were basic, the decor old fashioned, but it was cheap & friendly. Shared bathroom, not so much an issue if another guest and his friend hadn't come back drunk at 4.15 am shouting / swearing in the hallway and then vomiting loudly in the shared bathroom! Not the fault of the owner I guess, but unfortunate. Old fashioned/ traditional village pub with all the quirks / woodchip wallpaper & squeaky floorboards that go alongside.
- Mustafa (7/5): Good -
- Matthew (2/5): Very poor - Absolutely nothing. Deceptive picture of the room on the internet display. Too low beds. No bathroom upstairs in multiple rooms building with a very narrow staircase..
- Adejinmi (3/5): Not good an accommodation - So old, dirty and without indoor toilet. One has to get out his room to go for convenience that is shared It is a public pub where people drink and make disturbing noises
- Daniel (7/5): Good -
- Gary (10/5): Clean comfortable friendly always the first call when staying in this area - Great location for the venue we were visiting very reasonable price for room and breakfast, clean towels, tea & coffee facilities in room friendly helpful staff, this was our second stay at the Lion and will definitely be rebooking for the same gig next year. No complaints
- Tanis (8/5): Very good -
- Kyle (7/5): Good -
- Iain (5/5): Disappointing, expected better for the cost. - Location was good for where we needed to be and quiet, despite being on a busy road, pub had ample free parking. Good tea making facilities in the room. One bed was comfy, the other not so. Very clean room and facilities. Room was shabby and dated, we had to come and go up steep stairs and through the pub kitchen. One of the beds was very sloped and squeaky. No WiFi and we couldn't get the TV to work. No staff around in the morning to ask about breakfast so went to Starbucks instead!
- Dimo (10/5): Exceptional -

Everything met our expectations
Truly good value for the money.

- Ahmadzai (7/5): Good -
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Annah (9/5): Superb -
- David (3/5): Ultimately stay somewhere else! - Conversation with landlord - not much else! Really not impressed!
Place is very overused/worn, smelly, not very clean and badly lit.
- Chris (4/5): Disappointing -
- Andrew (7/5): Good - Thanks so much
- Helen (1/5): Bad - I don't think our room had been decorated for several decades, it smelt. I had to lay on the quilt to stop the matress springs digging into me. The bathroom was in an awful state. I would not recommend this to any body, EVER.
This has got to be the worst place I've ever stayed in.
- Adams (9/5): Superb -
- Phillip (8/5): Very good -
- Linda (10/5): A great weekend away.
Yes, it did, yeah. - Mike, the owner was amazing. Does a wicked cook breakfast? And nothing was no trouble. The young lady who served at the bar Very friendly Very relaxed
- Raleba (6/5): Very good very nice - It was good all along None
- Alannah (7/5): Easy and cheap, perfect for what we needed. - Good value for money, friendly staff Shared bathroom
- Alex (5/5): Passable -
- Kevin (7/5): Enjoyed my time there - Close to my business It was friendly with a nice crowd
- Jethro (7/5): Good -
- Mary (1/5): Bad - The fact that it had 5 single beds plus 1 pull out mattress. 1. The steep narrow staircase, old carpet that can be a hazard for slips if you not careful.
2. Connecting room ceiling too low, good enough for a 4ft hight, taller than that you will have to bend your head.
3. The old carpet in the rooms is very dirty, didn't seem like it was vacuumed or cleaned before our arrival, spotted animal hairs on the carpet, under the bed was dusty, windows and window seals dirty, we had to check for bedbugs.
4. Towel provided very old, small and thin..
5. Bathroom shower area, drainage blocked up with hair etc and flooded while you shower, very disgusted to stand in that while showering. Whole bath room not clean. As it is a shared bathroom at least keep it up to standard.
6. No toilet paper provided, we had to use our own that we brought with us.
7. Whole building have that steal small as the bar was downstairs, steal smell from the bar was upstairs as well.
8. Not worth the £175 for a night.
- Lee-ann (9/5): Love the owner and staff and the character of the place - The owner and staff were terrific and the property has loads of character! Yes things could be better however you have to have different expectations on a building that’s getting towards 200 years old
- Martin (8/5): Good value for money for a bed for the night. - Stayed as a stop over for cycling the King Alfred way between Winchester and Reading. We just wanted a bed, breakfast and a bathroom for the night with somewhere to secure our bike that wasnt too expensive. This filled the requirements exactly. A band was playing till quite late on Sat night but we didnt mind as they were so good and we were so tired we fell asleep to the music anyway. Great curry house within sight too. Place a bit dated but then this was reflected in the price
- Nick (3/5): Poor -
- Billy (1/5): Dreadful - Friendly landlord Cleanliness, mould on windows, uncomfortable beds , carpet was like concrete, kettle had to be boiled on the floor as plug didn't reach , damp smell, old bedding , unhygienic bathroom
- Tjeriko (3/5): Poor -
- Anthony (5/5): Passable -
- Surya (3/5): Poor -
- Bruce (7/5): Good -
- Sara (5/5): Interesting - It was very cheap so I can't really complain. However it is definitely an experience.
The beds were clean and me and my family slept well. It was just a little dated, well very dated. A bit bizarre, the route to the rooms was via the kitchen. A shared bathroom which was questionable.
If you just want somewhere to sleep this will do.
- Anonymous (1/5): Lion Brewery - Nothing!! Rooms inhabitable, we did not stay!!! The whole place was disgusting. The staff were not bothered when it was pointed out that the fire alarm was bleeping, indicating that it was not working!!
- Julian (1/5): Stay away, should not be advertised on any booking site. - The Lion Brewey was selected as it was close to Ash Railway Station and just 7 min train journey to my destination. That sadly was the only positive. The owner of the B and B was polite and will engage in conversation. The barman who I met on arrival was polite so was the cleaner who was cleaning the tables in the bar area before leaving. The establishment is run down both public areas and upstairs accommodation. Room 8 where I stayed for the 1 night had damp and very visible on the wall and ceiling. The floorboards were very soft and creaked when walked on. Carpet was old and dirty not only in the room but throughout the B and B. Entrance into the accommodation was through the kitchen area when the pub was closed and steep stairs to the accommodation. Piles of Rubbish was left overnight outside a bedroom, there on arrival at 1330 hrs Saturday and on leaving early morning around 1100. The shared shower was a lot to be desired black mould in the grouting of the tiles. 1 person drinking alcohol in the pub area at 1030 hrs and his manners were a little to be desired whilst eating my breakfast. On arrival back in the evening juke box music being played until 2315hrs, still hearing conversations shouting not ideal. The cost of £70 was extortionate and criminal daylight robbery! Whoever stays there should be paid. Nil recommendation stay away.
- Irakli (1/5): Bad -
- Hoare (7/5): Good - Staff Noise
- David (7/5): Good -
- Brenda (8/5): Very good -
- Steven (7/5): Good -
- Lee (8/5): A good, honest review - The price was right, very easy to book in. Alla the essentials were there down to tea, coffee, milk and sugar. To say the pub was downstairs it was really quiet. The beds need the lats putting on properly and new mattresses would be have made the stay comfier. It was very cold, I checked to makesure the windows were closed but they were old and warped with draughts. I awoke to a noise around 5.45am and confronted two people behaving suspiciously in the car park before they left in a vehicle. So possibly more lighting outside and a barrier across the car Park entrance during the night. In all im still very satisfied with my experience at your hotel and without the changes I've mentioned which is nit picking I would still return.
Many thanks lee

- Anne (5/5): Ok for one night /3 girls sharing a room. very dated . friendly staff - friendly . live music good location good price . shared bathroom which we knew about, but someone had fallen asleep in it. The landlord let us back in the pub to use the toilet as it was after closing hours . more of a contractor place to stay . very dated , but did us 3 girls for one night
