Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff are so very polite and helpful. They always put on a smile=) The lobby area is small but the view is really awesome!
The room is with 2 stories, everything is neat and tidy, except a part of the wall was quite stained, we assumed it was from the coffee machine which was placed next to it. The signature part was the private onset bath (on the 2nd story), it was truly awesome, the tank was clean and it is very cosy!
We enjoyed the facilities in the room, we wish to have spent on more night, except the toilet is separated from the shower place, which is downstairs.
We were arranged to have breakfast on the 2nd floor in a compartment at the restaurant. It was really chill and full of tranquillity. We enjoyed the breakfast service so much! Highly recommend if you want to stay away from the common-large-brand-hotel, it's a star and quiet profile hotel
- Namtip (10/5): -
- Kiky (10/5): - We spent two very relaxing nights at the Hakone Suishoen and made great use of the private onsen in the room. We had kaiseki dinner for both nights because one of our kids was younger than 10 and was not allowed the Teppanyaki dinner.
Staff:
Overall, the staff welcomed us very warmly and also put in their effort to make our stay very enjoyable. Most of the staff could speak English as well, so it's not a problem if you don't speak Japanese.
Food:
What can I say, both the Japanese breakfast and Kaiseki dinner were top notch and were very satisfying. One minor thing I would comment on is that the food tends to get similar if you stay more than one night and choose the same type of meal. They tried to make it slightly different, though.
Onsen:
The private onsen in the room was very wide and could fit my family of four comfortably. I also went to the public onsen and used the facilities there (the sauna was very hot, and good!).
Thank you, Hakone Suishoen, for making our first ryokan experience a very wonderful one. We will definitely be coming back.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Expensive lodging but the experience is worth it. - The food was impeccable and delicious. A highlight of our trip to Japan (including Tokyo and Kyoto). Both breakfast and dinner were served in the kaiseki style and it was incredible.
The "room" was more like a mini-house a with a big living area downstairs and a big bedroom and a private onsen upstairs.
The service at this hotel was very much 5 stars! Everyone was so accommodating and lovely. We didn't actually go to the public onsen or use the facilities, mainly because we were there only for one night and had a wonderful spring-fed onsen to oursleves en-suite but also because one of my children is transgender and the idea of being naked in a single-sex public space was uncomfortable for us. This is not unique to this property just the reality of our experience (traveling anywhere). We prepaid for our room via booking.com but the hotel contacted us separately to let us know that our 10 year old was not included in (the very steep price) so we had some additional costs to make sure she had a futon and meals to eat. Would I change it??? NO!!! It was an experience that can't be missed (we don't stay at many 5 star hotels so this was truly a treat for us!)

- Brian (10/5): So amazing - This was without a doubt the most Lux accommodations I’ve ever stayed in and that is saying something. We loved the provided yukatas. The meals were amazing. The place is spectacular. Start to finish. I highly recommend it.
- Rui (10/5): Excellent onsen, excellent staff and service -
- David (9/5): Beautiful property with excellent service and food, would definitely return. - Hakone Suishoen's facilities and staff were excellent. The hotel was a blend of the old a new: the living quarters were new-ish, while the dining facility is a traditional Japanese building. We also loved the onsen on the balcony, which was enjoyed by the whole family. The beds were quite comfortable, and our 2-story unit could be set up with tatami beds for our two boys, which they loved. The food and the service were both top-notch. A very memorable stay for the entire family. To be honest, the main issue was the booking process. For some reason, this ryokon's online booking system did not accept non-Japanese credit cards, so we had to go through Booking.com to book. However, Booking.com's listing was not flexible enough to indicate, for example that there is a kid's kaiseki meal available, so we winded up ordering adult meals for our 7 and 10 yos, which was too much food for them. If either the hotel can take foreign credit cards, or their listing on booking can be more clear, I would have given a perfect 10.
- MHolpert5 (10/5): My favorite hotel I’ve ever stayed in! - Wow what an incredible oasis away from all of the chaos of our trip to Japan. We were absolutely blown away with the property and the service of the staff. Honestly the photos don’t do it justice, so my only suggestion is to update the photos on the website!
We were greeted so warmly during check in and brought to our room where we were explained every detail for our trip such as what to wear and about our meals. We were given very comfortable traditional Japanese robes to wear around the property. I had a facial at the spa by Sisley that was out of this world. Make sure to book ahead of time. We felt so at peace and relaxed the entire stay. The room was so spacious and comfortable and the onsen was incredible. Couldn’t recommend this hotel more!!
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional - This was the highlight of our trip to Japan! It is expensive, but worth every penny. We felt like royalty. The meals are amazing, room is spacious, onsen is cozy, and service impeccable.
- Levine (9/5): Superb -
- Hin Pang (10/5): - This onsen stay was a perfect harmony of nature, tradition, and hospitality. If you’re looking for a place to reset your soul, indulge in exceptional cuisine, and be cared for with sincere warmth, this is the place. We left feeling refreshed, grateful, and already dreaming of our return.
- mom2781 (10/5): Wonderful food and well equipped rooms - You won’t regret booking a night or two at this lovely hotel with great food. One of the best Kaiseki meals we have had in Japan and breakfast was excellent too. We had a lovely stay with a waterfall outside our balcony and a private Onsen. Service was excellent throughout and ample provisions in the room with nice touches like two bottles of tea in the fridge and a portable TV for your private Onsen. We would just book this again just for the food it was that good but the room, lovely staff and pleasant surroundings are great too. Nice to have dinner with a great view of the garden and its trees. There is a nice waterfall - Chisuji Waterfall - just 10 mins away and a family mart within 2 minutes. We got a Hakone Free pass, took the limited express romance car from Shinjuku to Hakone Kumoto station and then a H bus (Hakonemachi) to Kowakien bus stop and from there we rolled our bags to the hotel. However the hotel does provide pick up and drop off services from Kowakudani station. Our Maisonette had two sinks and an additional WC on the ground floor is great if you are travelling with family.
- Alberto (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kai (9/5): Superb -
- Donna (10/5): I would return to this onsen in the future. - The excellent service started with pre-stay communication regarding personal preferences and a food allergies inquiry. The service was attentive and caring with many English-speaking staff. We had breakfast and dinner here every day and the chefs’ culinary skills went far beyond expectation. I especially like the teppanyaki dinner. The private room was spacious with a peaceful onsen outdoors. Location of this onsen is especially peaceful and cool, higher up in the mountain. The bathroom in our unit was downstairs whereas the bedroom, shower and onsen bath was upstairs.
- Saskia (10/5): This was such a unique experience. It was like being royalty, amazing service and everything was even better than hoped. -
- Yulin (8/5): Excellent food. Restaurant in a beautiful setting. - Beautiful setting and luxury accommodation. The meals were exceptional. The only bathroom and toilet is upstairs. If someone is sleeping in the living room downstairs they have to go upstairs through the bedroom to go to the toilet and bathroom. For a two story accomodation there should be at least a toilet downstairs.
The Wifi did not work on the second floor. It took alot of effort and several phone calls to get management to pay attention and to address this. In the end all that was needed was a reboot.
- Benjamin (9/5): Superb -
- Leeling (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, but it was a bit of a walk from the bus station if you’re going into Hakone. Be sure to call the hotel to have a shuttle pick you up from the nearest shuttle stop, which is down the hill from the property. Stuff that was super nice although they didn’t know too much about the tourist bus lines-recommend getting a hug Kone 1 to 3 day pass if you’re staying longer. Property is beautiful, great Japanese breakfast and dinners. They really take care of you – amenities are great in the room, especially with the private onsen. Prices were higher than most because we went during early cherry blossom season. it is like a seven minute walk slightly uphill towards the major bus stop for the tourist attractions. Overall, we had a great experience to stay there – either did not see many children and noise level was kept to a minimum. Definitely would love to stay here again for a romantic getaway.
- Ramon (10/5): We had a memorable and happy time. - Excellent food and service Rooms and facilities
- Brandon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Baldino (7/5): Food was great . Comfortable -
- Dmitrii (10/5): Great experience with an incredible private hot springs bath - Unbelievable experience. Stunning views during our way there, excellent room, fantastic dinner, incredible private hot springs bath nice staff. Nice walkings and nature around. Nothing
- Haddon (10/5): - Incredible service/food and the grounds are stunning.
- Niel (10/5): Exceptional -
- D8530CJdianeh (10/5): Luxurious traditional in the hills of Hakone - Very luxurious yet traditional hotel in the hills in the Hakone area. Their car service will pick you up at the nearby small train station which is not the larger main Hakone train station. We took a cab all the way up to the hotel which is about a 20 minute ride. We chose a room with a private onsen so we did not use the public one or spa. The room has a table that you sit at on the floor. It is wrapped in a heated cloth which is a nice touch. It comes with your own traditional Japanese clothes and shoes to wear to dinner. I did not wear mine the first night to dinner because it was so cold out. I could have because the dinning room is kept very warm. I was surprised that most people wore their Kimono's to dinner! Your room comes with breakfast and dinner. You have a choice between traditional western or Japanese meals. I did not like the western breakfast. Other than that it was some of the best food we had on our trip around Japan. You have to have the Teppanyaki by their professional chefs. You each have your own chef and choices of what you want grilled. The abalone was the best I have ever had. All of the dining is very private and well served. On the first night the server seemed very rushed like he did not have enough help! Their English was good and staff was very helpful. We would definitely stay there again!
- Tammy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (10/5): Loved our trip to Hakone Suishoen - We had a wonderful stay at Hakone Suishoen! Like all of our experiences in Japan, their hospitality knows no bounds. and Suishoen was no exception. The staff at every single level are so committed to ensuring your stay is everything you were hoping it would be. The food at Hakone Suishoen is definitely a highlight. The chefs are so incredibly talented pulling flavours together you never imagined possible to pair. We especially loved the Teppanyaki dinner - watching the chef work was such a special experience. The two other evenings were Kaiseki style with a few substitutions for me as I am pregnant. They did so happily and with equal complexity to a dish, they didn't sub with something plain or simple. While all the staff were so lovely, our last meal was with Ko and she was an absolute delight. She put in such effort and was very accommodating and warm! Thank you Ko!
The room was massive, much bigger than I'd expected and our private onsen got alot of use! We are so pleased we stayed at Hakone Suishoen! The area is big and it's hard to understand distances between major parts until you are there but the transport system is so well done and well connected making Hakone really easily navigable!
- Cheuk (10/5): Exceptional -
- Madeleine (5/5): Very disappointing. If English speaking it’s a waste of time. - No one spoke English and relied on google translate on their phones to communicate.
They were not able to arrange any private tours or guides. They informed us we couldn’t take the cable car to the Ropeway and needed to take a bus. This was possible.
We asked for them to arrange a taxi to take us 15 mins away and this wasn’t available and they had 4 hotel cars and weren’t able to drop us.
They asked us before and after arrival if we had any food allergies etc. we said no pork or shellfish. Having checked twice they served us the regular set meal with crabs, scallops and pork on it as set courses.
The room they showed us smelled badly of damp
- janice (10/5): - the room was wonderful, large with great bed and all the comforts
dining was terrific
warm atmosphere in the bar with a great bartender
- Adrian (10/5): - Relaxing
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (9/5): Superb -
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jason (9/5): Tranquil and peaceful experience with great food and service. Exactly what we wanted. - Dinner and breakfast were amazing food experiences. Service at every step was welcoming, even as a family.
- Flora (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect in all respects. Food and staff exceptional.
- Cecilia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (9/5): Superb - Food was amazing, beds were very comfortable and room was very spacious. Staff were incredible, accommodating and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay. Only negative I have to say is the shower in the room could be a bit cleaner.
- Andrew (10/5): - This was an amazing onsen and the staff were amazing. Meals were delicious and room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. Highly recommend for either a weekend getaway or extended trip!
- manutdcr7 (10/5): A great classic luxury ryokan - From the moment we parked our car at the entrance, we were constantly blown away by the service. Our room Hagi was decently sized and comes with all the amenities one could expect at a Fufu property. What made this place stand out was the constant amazing, attentive and proactive service by literally all the staff, kind of like Fufu Nikko. Everyone seemed to be very passionate about their job and made sure all the guests were well taken care of. The teppanyaki head chef cared if the guests enjoyed the food and was very attentive. When my wife got up for the washroom and other service staff were busy, he spoke into a microphone and other staff would magically popped up and showed her the way. After dinner they also offered to serve dessert and carry the remaining bottle of the champagne into our room. And then moments lady a waitress would show up in our room with the dessert and the champagne in an ice bucket, drenched in the pouring rain. And as with the service level here, she would be wiping off the rain on the serum wrap while saying sumimasen. It was to the point that we felt bad to have accepted the offer to have the dessert in-room, and I don’t think we have ever felt bad receiving service at a luxury hotel. We are not sure what is the proper way to show our appreciation other than writing a commendation email, as Fufu staff don’t accept tips. All in all a great stay and would definitely return here if we were to visit Hakone again.
- Yichen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vincent (10/5): Excellent place to stay. Make sure to get more than one night in order to not feel rushed. - Everything was excellent. Especially the food. All rooms have a private onsen and are quite big compared to the rest of Japan. Almost all of the staff can speak English to a decent level. Their phone number does not work, so you will have to get creative. We got lucky and managed to get a ride from a cab that worked for a different hotel, by asking the driver for help.
- Sunhee (9/5): Superb -
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Y. (10/5): - A great place to enjoy onsen and Japanese food.
- Brendan (9/5): Superb -
- Lap Wai (10/5): -
- Maryna (10/5): The best stay of my life. - I don’t even know where to start - it is almost as if we entered a separate divine and healing dimension, far from the everyday world.
- the rooms were marvelous, with everything we needed for comfort, we loved the Japanese-style sitting area in our room with the leg warmer.
- we got the softest most comfortable and beautiful Yukata for our stay.
- each breakfast and dinner was a culinary experience that made all our senses cry in joy - visual, the taste palettes, the smells, textures and the mood.
- Private onsen in the room is such an elevated experience, it was incredible
- the staff are excellent, they truly made us feel special
- the garden in the territory is beautiful
We felt pampered, rested and truly happy - in fact, we didn’t feel this happy for a very long time. We loved absolutely everything
- Michelle (10/5): Exceeded Expectations! - What a beautiful ryokan! Staff met us at our taxi in the driveway, brought us to a table to have tea while they took down our passport info. A gentleman that my daughter said was named Bae, brought us to our comfort twin maisonette and showed us all the amenities, how to use the onsen, etc. He was so lovely. We used the onsen overlooking the trees, maple leaves turning orange. Then to our kaiseki dinner in our yukatas. Dinner was gorgeous, and fun to try so many things we'd never even conceived of. Our server Riko was sweet, funny, and helpful. My wife had the wine and saki pairing and enjoyed that. Slept well and enjoyed a morning onsen. Then off to breakfast, which was also delicious. We wished we had done two nights! Maybe next trip to Japan...
- Ross (6/5): Pleasant -
- DKULE9 (10/5): Definition of excellence - The perfect place to stay in Hakone. The front desk staff were extremely nice and beyond accommodating. The rooms are wonderful (we stayed in one with a private onsen) and relaxing. The bartender was personable and made great drinks. The tepanyaki dinner was excellent (prepared by Narita San). As far as I’m concerned it is the only place to stay when visiting Hakone.
- Patricia (10/5): A Paradise of Luxury and Relaxation in Hakone - Our stay at Hakone Suishoen was an unforgettable experience of luxury and relaxation. The in-room couple’s massage and private onsen were absolutely divine, offering ultimate comfort and tranquility. The staff’s impeccable service rivaled even the best 6-star hotel butler experiences—attentive, warm, and professional in every way.
The culinary delights were remarkable, particularly the 3-course breakfast, which was a perfect start to each day. Visiting the nearby Hakone Open Air Museum was another highlight, adding a cultural touch to an already magical stay.
Hakone Suishoen exceeded our expectations for pampering and indulgence, and we can’t wait to return for another stay in paradise. Highly recommended! that we had to leave!!
- jeffrey (10/5): - Everything was excellent
- Leonard (10/5): Wonderful - The food, the setting, the service, everything Somewhat of a hassle to connect with transport to get a ride from the train station to the resort. Especially since our connections via IPhone in a foreign country were insufficient to get good wireless connections at the train station
- Tinsay (10/5): - One of the most beautiful, peaceful, serene hotels we have ever stayed at! Located in area with lots of trees. Private onsen is simply amazing. The Japanese breakfast was the best we have ever had. Highly recommend!
- Kevin (10/5): - Worth every single yen.
- Rex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cindy (9/5): Superb -
- Jenny (9/5): Would stay again - Beautiful property, amazing dinner. Staff made you feel special. Only one washroom downstairs in suite.
- Angie (7/5): Nice onsen, overall overpriced - Private onsen was really great. Having a high end toilet on each floor of the room was very nice. Staff did their best to be attentive. Free shuttle has very limited locations but was very nice. Close to bus and open air museum. Compared to other less costly high end properties, this one does not compare. The furniture and flooring was extremely run down, some being closer to a 2 star property. While the staff was nice, turn down service does not include clean up of room like at other hotels. Hotel needs to be more clear about dinner options. We were very disappointed to find that both dinners were Kaiseki- we had really wanted to experience the teppanyaki as well and there was no flexibility.
- Valerie (10/5): - Amazing ryokan nestled in the forest with impeccable service and one of the best kaiseki dinners we’ve experienced
- James (10/5): An exceptional onsen in Hakone with one of the best Chef’s and tranquil setting - The property is beautiful and set up on the mountain with the sound of a river in the background
The rooms are extremely well appointed and we had a hot tub on the second floor
And the staff were truly great and attentive
Lastly the chef - Morito-San deserves a huge thank you as the dinner was almost certainly one of the best meals ever !
We would absolutely come back here Candidly there is nothing to be critical of
- Michelle (10/5): Best stay ever - Amazing ryokan. The best service I've had in my life. They offered a driver for our stay, and made sure we had everything we needed. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were out of this world. Room was large, clean, and quiet. Loved the private onsen and patio. Definitely worth it!!
- Can Biao (10/5): - Staff, environment, services, food everything is excellent
- Satoru (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (8/5): Very good - We liked the private Onsen and our room was a great size as well. The Kaseiki style dinner in the private room was a lovely experience - it was our honeymoon and they gave us a couple of sweet gestures to celebrate which was thoughtful. There were some hairs we found in our bath upon arrival and a lot of ants around our onsen. We have to be honest the overall experience didn’t feel 5 star.
- Pearl (4/5): - Overall beautiful property and amazing food but have to take few stars off due to service discrepancy for a 5 start hotel.
-1 star for lacking international phone number that we could communicate pick-up time change when bus schedule delayed.
-1 star because we ask for ice deliver to our room at lobby and ice never came.
-1 start for my hair oil disappear after room cleaning.
- Mikael (10/5): Amazing - will return! - Beautiful property, private onsen, very attentive staff
Great Food!!!
Bonus - family mart 1 min way, museum 1 min away, bus stop 1 min away, train station 10 min though I would not recommend walking with luggage -
- Haunnah (10/5): Exceptional -
- ANNA (2/5): - Rude staff. Food sub par.
- Sharon (10/5): - We felt pampered the whole time! The multi-course meals were outstanding and it was special being served our food in a private room at the restaurant. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Overall I would highly recommend this ryokan experience.

- Nelson (10/5): Exceptional - We really enjoyed our stay and wished we could have stayed longer. The buildings and grounds were amazing the room was great. We also really enjoyed our meals, with the one exception below. We were unable to set the thermostat to our desired temperature as it kept going back to 25 Celcius. Also, we were a bit put off by the shark fin soup.
