Guest Reviews
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Spent two nights and had a great time staying here. The hosts Nikki and Alan are the best. Nothing and I mean nothing is too much trouble for them. From stepping through the door they made us feel welcome. Nikki upgraded our room and changed our tv as the one in the room needed re-tuning. The food is excellent, the steak pie and fish and chips are Devine. The breakfast is certainly enough to keep you going all day! The staff Liz and Sue are so friendly. The bed was cozy and comfortable and the room nice and quiet. We will certainly recommend the Troutbeck Inn to all of our family and friends. Will we return? You can bet your life that we will! Only sorry we couldn’t have stayed longer and can’t wait to return! Thank you so much Nikki and Alan for your brilliant hospitality and to Liz and Sue xx
- Lynsey (2/5): - The whole stay was dreadful.
Staff were rude & we felt unwelcome.
Food was overpriced & like a microwave ready meal.
The place was filthy and hadn’t been cleaned in months.
We checked out early.
Would not recommend this to anyone.
- John (6/5): - Room was extremely small, but clean and quiet
- John (8/5): A pleasant stay. - Our twin room was tastefully furnished blending old and modern. It was comfortable but the bathroom could have been cleaner (cobwebs). The food served in the restaurant was good. The cooked breakfast was very good but the accompanying cereal and toast was a mean portion. Overall our stay was very pleasant as was the owner and staff. Our stay was value for money.
- joy (8/5): Pleasant stay - Very good evening meals. Reasonable prices compared to other places we stopped at on a road trip
- Les (10/5): - Nikki and her team were as usual, very friendly and helpful and looked after us well.
Thank you
- John (10/5): - Friendly staff, very comfortable bed and welcomed dogs
- Mike Maureen (10/5): - Wonderful friendly hosts, nothing too much trouble. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Would recommend.
- karen (6/5): Dont arrive earlier than 4pm! - Dont turn up before 4pm as you wont be even let into the building! Myself and others were left waiting outside even though we informed them we had rooms booked. Food lovely and home cooked but stop serving at 7.30 and bar closes at 9.30. Staff were really busy ( only 2 to cover bar and serving food) but they were lovely under stress. Showers in both our rooms could do with new sealing strips as they looked grubby but other than that the rooms were nicely decorated. Good breakfast served 8-9am...needed to pre order food and time required the night before. Check out 0930 which is early and felt a little rushed.
- Jemima (10/5): Great all rounder - especially value - Great location for exploring the lakes. Staff are chatty and friendly which made me feel at ease as a solo traveller. Excellent meal in the evening and breakfast. Will stay again.
- Simone (8/5): The owners are lovely - The couple who own the hotel and who greeted us, were lovely, friendly and helpful. Because I am unable to eat a full meal, they kindly made a child's portion for me. The food was delicious and there was a nice atmosphere. The only down side, is that although we love dogs and have always had dogs in our life, there was one yappy dog staying and was close to our room, so if it heard anything, it would start yapping, disturbing our sleep. I could see by the faces of another couple, at breakfast, who also had their dog with them, that the continual yapping was annoying them too.
- Joanne (10/5): - Nice relaxing stay. Everyone was really welcoming perfect spot for exploring. Food was really good. Nice spacious comfy room.
- Christine (10/5): Oh and did I mention ... - Staff are absolutely wonderful màking you genuinely feel very welcome. Very knowledgable about the area too. The room was clean comfortable and well decorated as was the rest of the facilities. Loads of local art work on display which is also for sale. Food was awesome and menu choices were varied plus specials on offer daily. Dog friendly too what more could anyone want oh and did I mention the stunning scenery.
- P (10/5): - Friendly, clean, comfortable bed, hot shower, good breakfast, bar, what more do you need?
- David (10/5): - Good location, good food, excellent staff.
- Paul (10/5): Stop scrolling & book it! - Great place with great people
- Martin (10/5): - A very pleasant find for an break on a long journey. Nice room and welcoming 'land lady'. Will use again
- Steven (10/5): - Friendly owners and staff, comfortable accommodation, excellent food and drink, and a great base from which to explore the northern part of the Lake District.
- peter (10/5): Big Sky hot days in the lakes - First time staying here it was fab and well situated for easy access to the lakes just of the A66. Was good value for money with outstanding service and food from Nikki and her small team. The room was small but functional and very clean, Super dog friendly and everything is thought of even a doggie menu. Will be staying again
- MICHELLE (10/5): Great accomodation - Brilliant. Everyone was really friendly. Food was lovely.
- Verified traveler (6/5): An OK Stay - Overall, it was OK. Staff were nice, breakfast was lovely. Beds were uncomfortable. General noise from other rooms and the bar downstairs could be heard very easily. Would not stay there again. Picture is of the top of the chest of drawers which housed the TV and the tray with kettle, cups and tea & coffee.
- Douglas (6/5): Needs some work - The Troutbeck Inn staff were delightful but, unfortunately, there were some issues. My bedroom had an electric heater, which wasn't plugged in... when I plugged it in, it didn't work and the room was very cold. Likewise, there was no heating in the bathroom! I cannot understand why some hotels put mirrors with protruding shelves above bathroom sinks ; it was literally impossible to wash my face without getting water everywhere. Paint is not that expensive, the whole place was badly in need to a paint job, bare wood showing through the paint on the front door is not a good start for guests arriving.
- Helen (10/5): - We had a delightful time at the Troutbrook Inn. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, plus they were certainly dog friendly.
As this was my first time travelling with my dogs this was so reassuring.
Would certainly book again if making a return visit to the area.
- Ian (10/5): - Good wholesome food
- Mollie (10/5): Amazing place - A fabulous place to stay. Friendly and fantastic owners who couldn’t have done more for us. Food and drink was great and is an ideal place 10minutes away from ullswater and Keswick. We will definitely be back.
- Russell (10/5): - We have stayed with Nikki 3 times now. Quality food and service. Very dog friendly place. Love the Troutbeck Inn!
- Gary (2/5): Very rule based location - Good location, nice property, very poorly managed. No room service (literally: beds not made, etc). Landlady and staff highly abrasive; previously prison officers (literally). Very rule based location, it’s not exactly holiday stuff!
- Stephen (6/5): - Nice place buy VERY strict on check in (4.00pm). Arrived at 3.40pm and was made to sit in the car park for 20 minutes till 4.00pm rather than sit in the pub. Wasn't impressed. 9.30 am check out seems a little early too.., especially at the weekend...
- Neil (10/5): - Lovely hotel, warm and comfortable.
The owners were welcoming and friendly.
This hotel comes highly recommended.
- Tonya (6/5): - Says it is an Inn, a ghost inn. Self checkin, directions were good. No sign of any staff until the morning, breakfast was ok and the staff person very friendly. Room super small
- william M (8/5): Geeat Stay - From the minute you walk ghrough the door this Hotel makes you welcome
- Vicky (10/5): - Lovely staff- very friendly. Upgraded to a cottage as having work done on outside of building. Food was great.
- ALEXANDER (2/5): - Booking made which stated limited check in time. On arrival found the property to be closed and in darkness. The appearance of the property is one of dilapidation and somewhat sinister and not consistent with the information on the Expedia website. Being so sinister I did not enter the property and made alternative arrangements. Several text messages received at 1800 and 2100 hours noting the hotel, bar and restaurant closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. i.e. too late to be of any use and forewarning of the nature of the establishment. The messages, which were illiterate, indicated entry was self service using a key from a key safe behind the front door and breakfast was available by using a form in the bedroom. This morning I received a further e-mail which made it clear the operators of the property were totally unaware I had not stayed in the property. I Have reported the situation to Expedia and the Lake District Tourist Board. All in all a very bad experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - An enjoyable stay, room was very spacious and clean. Food was beautiful and staff very friendly. We would definitely stay here again.
- Barry (10/5): Solo 3 night stay. - Was not sure what to expect when I book this for a 3 night stay. This place is a little gem,Staff friendly, I booked a single room facilities in the room was great, tea and coffee replaced daily , I ate here every evening and the food was first class. Cooked breakfast was excellent, overall very good value for bed and breakfast. Lovely place.
- Keith (10/5): - Troutbeck Inn is a gem of a place. The owners are lovely and we had a good laugh with them. The food is second to none and is locally sourced and cooked fresh. We stayed for 2 nights in September whilst walking around the Ullswater area and the location is superb. Right by a main road for good access but without an intrusive noise from the road. I'm sure we will be staying here again if we plan more walks in future.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A good room and great location. Dinner was spoilt by burned meat in the steak an ale pie which was below the standard of all else at this hotel. Would stay there again.
- Pamela (6/5): - The bedrooms were clean and comfortable.
- Mary (8/5): - Instructions needed in room 4 - for turning electric shower on - would be helpful
- Ian (10/5): - This is a superb base to explore the surrounding area then afterwards on your return Niki and Alan have lovely home cooked food on offer with an good choice of beer and wine.
I can highly recommend the Sunday roast; sticky toffee pudding; garlic mushrooms and a steak pie which was second to none, oh and not forgetting the breakfasts which are also excellent!
Niki and Alan work extremely hard to make us all feel welcome and valued and it made our stay just perfect, thank you to you both!
- Andrew (10/5): - I’m so happy and proud of my choice of place to visit this weekend and the place and staff was amazing and the food was amazing too I will be going back soon
- Steve (8/5): - The hotel is lovely. We couldn't get the radiator in the room to work, when we asked for help we were told that the heating was about to come on anyway, but the radiator never warmed up at all, fortunately the bed was cozy and comfortable so we were fine. There's not really anywhere else locally to go for an evening meal and it is expensive to eat here, but the food was delicious.
- stacey (10/5): - The room was excellent, really cute decor and plentiful wardrobe/cupboards with a great ensuite shower. Full cooked breakfast included had the BEST poached eggs ever! Lovely menu for evening meal with fabulous homemade steak and ale pie. It's in an isolated location in the North Lakes (not the Troutbeck near to Windermere we expected) - so you will need to drive a good distance to start walks. Very dog friendly with more 4 legs staying than 2 whn we were there. Would thoroughly recommend.
- Karen (8/5): - Quaint little pub, which is very popular.
Lovely staff, great food and the room was fine for what I needed for a 1 night stop. Only suggestion for improvement would be a new bed. Although I still slept well and could still walk in the morning.
- E (10/5): - Delicious food, friendly annd welcoming people and comfortable rooms. Only downside was the bar closed very early (though it did mean we got to bed nice and early).
- Paul (4/5): A cold stay. - We were attending the classic car show at Dalemain the following day and thought a local Inn would be more fun than the travel lodge. The weather was cool and changeable, we were surprised when we entered the Inn that inside it was as cold as outside , there was no evidence of heating. Despite being an Inn with a bar, there was no area for drinking, the whole place was set up for food. There was no guest lounge.
Our room was even colder as the window was open. There was an electric panel heating unit on the wall, but it was not working. The lighting came from a single central bulb with a dark shade so the lighting didn’t reach the walls. The bedside lamps were not bright enough to read by. There were no other peripheral lights. The television was high up on a chest of drawers on a fixed stand, so it was difficult to see, also the selection of chanels was very limited and BBC one and two were not available to select.
We had previously booked dinner, at a time suggested as less busy by reception. Despite this, we did not receive our food until one hour and five minutes after taking our seats!
Breakfast was strictly between 8.00 and 8.45 am. The breakfast area was even colder than the night before. Food provided was brought from the kitchen as ordered the night before on a choice pro forma.
The coffee was undrinkable, it was instant coffee one spoon for two cups.
In our room later we were disturbed by loud knocking at our door at 9.30 am. as it was time to leave!
- peter (8/5): - Very friendly staff and excellent food. In need of update to decor
- Ravina (10/5): - Lovely stay in beautiful area but disappointed not to get fish and chips as they had run out by 7pm. However, my burger was good. Lovely room with views of the hills and nice hosts
- Wayne (10/5): - I've got to say that the location is spot on with the A66 being very close but not to close, and the road that takes you down to the lake is brilliant, 10 min and your there. Food and condition of the room is also very good. I will be back.
- Deborah (8/5): - Pleasant hotel, we arrived quite a bit later than expected, however staff were very accommodating. Meal times quite restrictive, but I believe this was due to staffing issues, stop serving evening meals at 19.30 and breakfast was 08.00-08.45.
Food was absolutely delicious.
Rooms were adequate, good en-suite. Couldn’t get bedside lamps to work ? Very peaceful location, goid value for money
- Dennis (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff, very good food, good access to the A66 and the M6. We would definitely stay there again.
- Andrew (10/5): - It was all good just a shame the pub itself doesn't open till 4pm and closes at 9pm
- Mark (10/5): Great stay - Excellent stay. Country pub. Food great. Staff brilliant.
- robert (8/5): A Northern Lakes surprise! - Interesting day at the Troutbeck as it was England's quarter final game, all tables booked for 'meal with match' and other room 95% booked so need to book in advance when visiting again! should be a note to future guests re booking? General decor is excellent. Room nice, bed reasonably comfortable, supply of hot water at 06-00 was a long time coming. Electric shower OK. Food excellent, but no steaks! Car parking OK but tight with a full house! Due to staff shortages, a Lakes problem, closed at 21:00. Earliest breakfast ( included in my price ) was 07:30, far too late on a fine summer morning. In conclusion, now I know more, I will stay again.
- Shannon (8/5): - We enjoyed our 1 night stay. Breakfast was good. It was a good location for hiking the northern fells. Nice staff who run the place.
- Robert (10/5): - Friendly atmosphere great food , all good .
- Dean (10/5): - Iv stayed here a few times and always a friendly, pleasant stay, with lovely food and drink
- colin (8/5): - Wonderful pub with great staff and excellent food, lovely room my only neg was mattress not to my liking but after saying that I will be back
- Christopher (10/5): Great place just recommended - Great place, great hosts, great rooms, good food and friendly service
- janelle (8/5): - The bed wasn't the best. Rolled together into the middle
- Amanda (6/5): - Beautiful setting, our room overlooked the car park but had nice views to the hills. The vegetarian option at dinner wasn’t great and the food could have had more attention to detail for the dinner and breakfast but the staff were super sweet
- Dr. Heinz (10/5): - Very motivated young Team.
- Denise (10/5): - Hotel was great, very friendly place.
- Simon (10/5): Very Nice - Very nice room, plenty of space. Clean and comfy. Staff very friendly, food excellent
- James (10/5): Cozy room and friendly staff - The room was very cozy and the one staff girl was incredible. She was friendly and did everything to ensure our stay was great.
- John (10/5): Stay at Troutbeck Inn - We had an overnight stop at the Troutbeck Inn were greeted by a very friendly owner who couldn’t do enough for us. We had an evening meal which was as good as I’ve had anywhere, great quality, great taste and not at all expensive ( would recommend the stake pie it was delicious and plenty of it. Had a full English breakfast which was as good as it gets. Hosts were warm, friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back
- Justine (10/5): Highly recommended - We had a lovely stay...room and breakfast were very good. Location ideal for exploring the quieter eastern lakes where we found fabulous walks. Made to feel very welcome by the very helpful/friendly team. Hope to visit again soon.
- David (10/5): Always great - Great team and relaxing location. Ideally placed for exploring the Northern Lakes.
Always assured of a warm welcome.
Comfortable clean rooms and welcoming restaurant.
- Chris (10/5): - A very relaxing stay on business and will definitely stay again. A lovely quiet area in gorgeous surroundings near Ullswater.
Owners and staff were very friendly and welcoming which always helps when away on your own.
- Linda M (8/5): - Very nice room and property. Nicely and newly decorated . Check in man very nice as was breakfast lady. The evening staff not so good.
- Andrew (10/5): - Great location for the lakes and perfect for a solo traveller.
Staff were very friendly and would definitely stay again
- Michael (6/5): Comfortable 1 night stay - But— - A warm welcome and quick check in.The entrance to the Pub and stairway would benefit from a redecoration.Bed was comfortable and linen felt fresh and clean.
The room has been decorated in recent times but it does need a deeper clean of skirtings and behind furniture. The en suite fittings were clean
but similar attention needed.
Breakfast was fine with limited choice that had to be selected the evening before and served between 8-9 am. Checkout 9:30 .
I appreciate that it seems as a family run pub with rooms in this location it’s a struggle to keep up with the overheads and maintenance.
However the many good reviews indicate that customers are happy with the overall experience.
The pub areas have a pleasant atmosphere with wood burners , In one of the lounge areas the owners are tackling ceiling damage but there is plenty of seating in both bars.
Parking was easy.
The cost was reasonable for the area .
- Lee (10/5): - Excellent stay.
- Ian (10/5): Lovely place - Fantastic stay here, will definitely be going again, food was gorgeous, room very clean and tidy, the Staff very friendly and polite, lovely little break away. Good walks all around the property with access using Bus or Car.

We paid around £80 for B and B which for the area is at the lower end of the price range .
Parking was easy.
- Michael (10/5): - Always look after me. Fantastic hosts
- Catherine (4/5): - Room had large cobwebs. TV didn’t work. Pub pretty much only for eating rather than space to just have a drink. Forced to order a main course rather than just a starter (and dessert) for dinner. Breakfast was good but limited.
- Mike (10/5): Brilliant - Really welcoming couple, lovely place with lovely views. Would happily bring my family back here.
- Lauren (10/5): Conscientious of solo travellers! - Big thank you for Nikki and Al who went above and beyond for customer service when I stayed at troutbeck inn for 2 nights. Nikki especially was conscientious of the fact that I was a solo female traveller and made sure I felt looked after and safe the whole time I stayed there. I feel like I’ve known them years! They are passionate about what they do and it really shows.
Cooked breakfast and continental options in the morning which is served between 8-9am, it was delicious each morning! You are given a key so you can come and go as you please. Free car parking available and the hairdryer in the room is actually more powerful than my own back home! Lovely big bathroom and nice shower. I will be returning- thank you x
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent stay - Good, comfortable, clean and good food.
- Rob (10/5): Great find - brilliant location for exploring - Great find - 6 miles off the motorway, so very handy
Its an old building but very comfy and the food and the welcome was superb :)
Will aim to stay again when i,m next passing
Great staff ( even the new "trainee" on the till.....)
Many thanks all

- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good little inn serving good wholesome food. Bed was comfortable. Room was clean and view from the window of the hillside and landscape lovely.
Shower was nice size and clean.
Bathroom washbasin was far to shallow and small.
Overall a pleasent stay.
- Richard (10/5): A warm friendly stay - We were looked after really well. We enjoyed all the food and the Wainwright Gold was very well kept.
Our dog Toby really enjoyed his stay as well being able to join us for breakfast and dinner was a real plus.
Good luck to all for the roofing renovations.
- Kevin (10/5): Excellent - Lovely place, The owners are very welcoming and nothing is any trouble. Felt very at home here, room was comfortable, food in the pub is good too and portions are very generous. Stayed a few times and my go to in the area
- COLIN (10/5): Troutbeck-well be back - Really enjoyable experience of a few days in the Lakes. The hosts are very friendly & hardworking and attend to your every need.
Location is super & very close to Ullswater
Rooms are clean & functional
Restaurant Food was super with good range of options available
- Cat (10/5): Recommend - A very comfortable, well equipped room with great hosts.
- Joy (10/5): Lovely country inn - Lovely warm welcome from friendly owner. Fantastic views from bedroom window overlooking field of sheep. Great dinner and breakfast. Welcome break south of Edinburgh.
- Kristin (10/5): - We loved the location, the amazing breakfast, the service and facilities. A beautiful house with an authentic structure-yet modern bathrooms and renovated interior. The staff are wonderful!! So friendly and hard working. Anytime we come back to the Lake District, we’ll be booking at The Troutbeck Inn!!
- Richard (10/5): - A very sociable pub - staff were very helpful - food & drinks were excellent. Shower was a bit complicated to operate. Certainly worth a stopover if staying at or travelling through Lake District.
- Les (10/5): - Everything was absolutely fine, Nikki and Alan were excellent hosts, definitely return one day.
- Dawn (10/5): - It can be daunting traveling solo but I would have no issues staying at Troutbeck inn again.
Everybody there was so friendly and welcoming I even received a phone call the day before traveling asking if I’d like a reservation to eat on the evening I got there due to how busy it was.
I had eaten there previously but not stayed. Facilities are cosy and comfortable just what you need. Food is amazing too the steak and ale pie kept me powered through my hike the next day.
Look forward to staying again in the future if I’m over in ullswater again
- Kate (10/5): - Really lovely, well maintained property. It was clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly and accommodating throughout. Would highly recommend.
- M T (6/5): Average place - rooms are modern - rooms are nice & comfortable. Check in 4pm & check out 9.30 / breakfast 8-9am. Very unfriendly hours!
We have never had Eggs benedict without bacon, this was egg on muffin with hollandaise sauce called eggs benedict!
- Christopher (10/5): - It was a really nice place, the room was was spacious had everything you needed. The food was excellent.
- Sue (10/5): - Great hosts, great room with view and fantastic breakfast
- Melissa (6/5): Average place to stay! - Customer Service was poor, no friendly faces, no eye contact. Food was good, we had an evening meal and breakfast, asked for a glass of water with breakfast as can’t have fruit juice as diabetic and you would have thought I had asked for a pot of gold!
Room was clean but TV didn’t work and shower gel container in shower was empty.
Breakfast was very early between8-9 and we hadn’t realised check out was 9.30 , too early!
