Guest Reviews
- Steve spurr (9/5): - Nice and quiet.
- protuc (10/5): -
- GEORGE FELLA (10/5): - Everything
- Nigel (7/5): Lovely property, made welcome by all the staff. - The continental breakfast was excellent and the staff were very quick to top up the coffee etc. The shower pressure and temperature in the ensuite was very good. The room we had was extremely hot due to a very large heating water pipe (approx. 4 inch pipe). Adjusting the radiators made no difference. Several of the dining room smaller tables all rocked either due to floor board movement or being gently knocked when sitting down resulting in coffee spillage. ( Central Pedestal)
- Stephen (9/5): -
- David Scott 2 (9/5): - Lovely old Manor house, beautiful location, easy to get to Oxford which is why i booked. Breakfast was very basic a cooked option would have made the stay perfect.
- Annick (10/5): Pocket of heaven on earth. Thank you Lord. - Heaven on earth. Amen.
All glory to the Lord. We could not stay longer….

- Vivienne (8/5): The perfect location for visiting family, just a few miles away and only needed a one night stay. - Room had a lovely view of the garden. Location perfect for our overnight stay. Lovely breakfast with plenty of choice. Super comfy beds. Very quiet and peaceful, no noise, creeks or bumps in the night. Pleasant welcoming staff on arrival and on our departure. Only one bedside light. Shower tray very slippery, no slip mat so we had to stand on a towel. Although breakfast was great, the coffee was disappointing, a bit weak and not very hot.
- jonathan (10/5): -
- Rebecca (8/5): Bit random, but great value for money :) - beautiful grounds, friendly, helpful staff, great breakfast, quiet room
- Cilla (9/5): A great overnight stop .. well worth the price - Breakfast was great - in such a cosy little room! The bedroom we booked was enormous!
All in all a good place to stay for a night, with thoughful simple facilities for those staying longer.
- Mark (9/5): great character -
- Wain (9/5): - Lovely old building with character yet mod cons for a relaxing stay
- Debbie (9/5): - Beautiful location. Room very spacious and facilities great Shower in room was leaking resulting in a big puddle on floor. Not enough room when we came down for breakfast. Other people had to move so we could sit together.
- Michael (9/5): No problem in choosing to stay there again. - Bed was comfortable and room very tidy and clean. Location was very quite. Check-in arrangements were well communicated and welcoming. Continrntal breakfast was excellent. Shower cubicle had limited space.
- Chris (8/5): - Delightful place, quiet and beautiful. Boiler noise throughout the night.
- Justin McCann (10/5): - Idyllic location, stunning buildings, well maintained property. Breakfast, healthy and quality food. Staff were really friendly. Tranquil location for rest. Beds really comfy and temperature control was easy. Large rooms. Room decor quite basic, but clean and functional. Car essential as little facilities nearby.
- Sarah (5/5): - Location was fine. Breakfast passable I thought there was a onsite restaurant but no. Also bathroom in room 1 very bad smell quite dusty too.
- Stefania (3/5): La camera non era all'altezza della struttura, piccola stanza arredata in modo freddo -
- peter (10/5): Perfect. - Wry nice people and clean All good
- john (6/5): -
- Merel (8/5): Prachtige locatie - Prachtige locatie.
Ontbijtzaal was erg gezellig.
- Sally (7/5): -
- Malcolm (8/5): Pleasant stay unusual and quirky room layout but worth visiting especially for a short break - Nice surroundings and very peaceful and quiet. Breakfast was buffet style and continental as advertised although a little limited on the cold meat with only a single salami style meat on offer however the range of cereals and yoghurts with fruit compote was good. Boiled eggs available (cook yourself) and croissants….selection of preserves and butter. The room was okay however it was at the uppermost part of the old building requiring climbing two flights of stairs which was difficult for me as I have arthritis and a replacement knee. I was advised that for future stays I request a room at ground level however no offer was made during the check in procedure so I assume the rooms on the lower levels were fully occupied.
- Soriya Labovitch (9/5): - A peaceful place by the church, love tge tranquility and ambience of the countryside
- David (10/5): - All excellent
- Roman (10/5): Herrliches historisches Anwesen.
- peter (10/5): Very good - Wet clean and friendly staff N/a
- Finn (10/5): - Alles :)
- Peter (10/5): Beautiful, peaceful, retreat centre - Not really a hotel, but a beautiful, quiet, ancient retreat centre run by Quakers offering b&b. Perfectly comfortable, and a lovely garden, but some of the facilities are a little dated and tired (the shower taps were hard to figure out for example). Dont let that stop you coming though, it will be good for your soul as well as your body.
- Ruth (8/5): Beautiful place, calm and relaxing. - Beautiful house, very quiet with a calm atmosphere. Really friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable room with great view of the garden. Nice that there was information about local walks, which we used to walk round the village. Light bulbs in bedside lamps could have been brighter.
- Dean (8/5): Quiet, beautiful setting and substantial breakfast. 😊 - Beautiful grounds, lovely service and plentiful and delicious breakfast, though coffee was luke-warm. No outlet in the bathroom. Room was a little small.
- Kathryn (8/5): Very clean &comfortable in gorgeous peaceful surroundings. Would definitely stay again - The ambience of the manor was charming - peaceful surroundings, near to quaint villages and a good pub close by We were greeted warmly by a very helpful gentleman
The continental breakfast was very full - plenty to eat The egg cooker was rather challenging for some I always like a bath in the en suite but was not expecting one
- Alison (8/5): -
- Robert (8/5): -
- Richard (9/5): -
- stéphanie (9/5): - The atmosphere at the Charney Manor was unique. It was secluded and quiet. The scenery was wonderful. This manor has a beautiful soul. My room was small but comfortable. The breakfast was really pleasant. There were gluten-free and plant-based options.
- Bairbre (10/5): A great place to unwind but also a great hub to explore Cotswolds and Oxford - We loved the location, the breakfast, the friendly staff and the space - lots of rooms and gardens
- Teki (8/5): Simplistic life in simplistic cottage - The location is superb. It is located at the middle of countryside, far from any urban area. I can watch the sky full of stars at night The cottage is very simple and offers simple continental breakfast. The space is limited. You should understand the purpose of the trip in this cottage before you come.
- Denise (7/5): Local pub closed and no wine available after reception closed - Kept to original features None
- Hubert (9/5): Value for money - The location, the staff and rooms were exceptional The toilet were a bit cramped and breakfast options limited
- Jonathan (10/5): Perfect - A lovely, peaceful place to stay. Comfortable beds and very quiet. Lovely breakfast which is served in the oldest part of the property. There are tables in the grounds so you can eat your own food out there and enjoy the grounds.
- Robert (10/5): - The main building is dating back to 841AD and 'up dated' 13th century. Brilliant.
- Gavin (9/5): Great experience, helpful staff and location suited for our 2 night stay - Staff v helpful and friendly; Breakfast-Continental was well presented and with sufficient choice; the room a good size with ensuite and shower over bath.
- Dean (8/5): Lovely comfortable room with everything I needed. However lots of cobwebs in my room some of which I removed myself. - Beautiful quiet location and historic and beautiful building. My room had many cobwebs
- Sarah (7/5): Staff were friendly and helpful, venue was nice but a few improvments could be made to make things better. - The location and the venue itself were lovely. The grounds are very well kept and beautiful scenery. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The bedroom wasn’t the most comfortable. Very hot and humid, a fan was provided for the room but we did not sleep very well as the bedding was very thick and we didn’t realise the two single beds would be on either side of the room.
Aware the hot weather can’t be controlled, but bedding should have been weather appropriate and maybe a lighter quilt provided.
Breakfast selection wasn’t the best but we did arrive towards the end of serving. However, we noticed lots of flys around the food so I did not want to eat anything. Aware this is of no fault of the venue, but staff have a responsibility to ensure food is sanitised.
- Oktay (8/5): Very good -
- Helen (7/5): Good - A good continental breakfast. Comfortable beds, easy parking and stunning location.
- Matilda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diane (9/5): Beautiful place in serene location - Beautiful old building in serene location. Lots of quiet corners to sit and relax. Kitchen with microwave for preparation of simple meals. Comfortable room with good facilities. Varied continental breakfast and lovely staff. Good, safe parking across from the house. Wonderful overnight stay. Nothing
- Kevin and Lesley (10/5): - Beautiful surroundings, peaceful and rural setting. Perfect peace, friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast.Only 30 mins drive to Oxford.
- Adrian (6/5): - Nice location, clean room
And then...
- the room's windows open to the outdoor area, and guests partied until very late
- temperature outside was 30, no aircon, just a little fan
- wash basin in the bedroom (??) not in the bathroom
- Martin (10/5): Wowsers - Stunning property. Beautiful room. Lovely breakfast. Amazing price Nothing.
- Gary (9/5): Would definitely stay again ideal location not far from Wantage, Abingdon and Harwell - Ideal location beautiful old manor friendly staff After being out all day when we returned to the room the window was full of blue bottles but that's to be expected in the countryside I just opened the other window and let them all out
- Michael (8/5): We enjoyed this overnight stay - I expect a repeat booking will result. - A lovely location with a wonderful history. Very pleasant surroundings. Very helpful staff, who offered a warm welcome. The room was a little 'spartan', although the facilities were adaquate.
- Shaun (10/5): A beautiful place to stay and excellent value for money. - Beautiful buildings and grounds. Good breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent value for money. All was good.
- Pen (9/5): Very enjoyable roadside B&B. - Great English continental breakfast. Very quite place and very pastoral. Some rooms are dated, but clean. Doors are a bit tight. Noisy when closing.
- Luke (9/5): Superb -
- Lindsay (9/5): Superb - I was arriving later than normal check in times, but the lady on reception was most helpful and left arrangements for me. In fact she was still there when I arrived. I really appreciated that as it took a lot of the pressure out of getting off the Portsmouth ferry. I stayed in the barn and got a room upgrade to ensuite which was nice too. The room was comfortable and conveniently next to the shared kitchen lounge. Since it was Monday, the pub in the village was closed but that was no problem as I could make my meal for the evening. So my advice is to check pub openings if you want to eat out, bring your own microwaveable meal or order a takeaway (the room instructions provide contacts). I can't understand the comments some have made on breakfast, OK its not full English but there's lots to eat and choose from. The main building is fascinating and worth a look. Finally the area is very quiet yet conveniently located for Oxford etc. A slightly larger microwaveable bowl in the kitchen would have been useful. But not a real problem.
- Mohammed (10/5): Exceptional - If you want to explore Oxfordshire and The Cotswolds is there anything better than Charney Manor? Peaceful, secluded a haven away from "The madding crowd". Manicured lush gardens to soothe the soul in a historic house. Delightful, welcoming staff to elevate your stay. Fantastic breakfast and a large spacious room. Its a place you can return to again and again. Thank you Charney Manor
- Spanjaard (9/5): Very beautiful, wel managed affordable manor in the relaxing english country side. Highly recommend - Very well maintained and managed hotel in a beautiful setting. Price is very good for brittish standards.
Good delicious healthy unbrittish breakfast. We loved the very relaxing atmosphere. A bit far from everything. No pub or restaurant in the village.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Be warned! No meals and terrible breakfast - Probably the worst continental breakfast ever! Breakfast is “served” from 7.00 until 9.00. We arrived just before 8.00am. No staff visibly on duty, and empty baskets and empty plates with one slice of salami remaining. We found a gentleman in the kitchen who said “If nothing is there then its all gone. If you can wait 25 minutes I will heat two croissants.” Far worse than Fawlty Towers.
- Lily (10/5): A beautiful manor set in a picturesque and quiet village - A historical and beautiful manor set in a picturesque village near Oxford. It also offers social rooms and libraries to wind down and relax which we did not expect and what a bonus! Not to mention the extensive garden to take in the surroundings. The room is sparkling clean. The staffs are friendly. Very easy to travel to Oxford— parked our car at one of many park and rides and took a bus, 35 mins trip. Loved our stay and only wish we could be there longer! None ( but just a note- no lift of course and the steep stairs can be challenging to take the luggage — we didn’t which was fine for us)
- Malcolm (9/5): Great -
- Simon (9/5): Superb -
- De (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location, close to Oxford. Lovely countryside location in a stunning building. We were welcomed by Guy who was an excellent host. He was assisted by these very cute lambs on our way out to the car. -
- Whitaker (10/5): Exceptional - It was very peaceful!
The staff were helpful and friendly.
Our room was great!! Spacious, clean, and relaxing.
Breakfast we had lots of choice and it was well presented.
I would definitely go back.Thankyou, Charney Manor!! I had no dislikes.
- Matt (7/5): Good -
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (10/5): Peaceful relaxing retreat - Beautiful setting , glorious gardens and bleating lambs in adjoining field … as close to heaven as I could imagine . Nothing
- Valerie (9/5): Overnight in one of England’s oldest inhabited houses - Fascinating historic buildings in superb gardens. Primarily a conference venue run by the Society of Friends, which now also does B&B. Comfy beds. The breakfast was varied and tasty, at communal tables, making for a relaxed friendly atmosphere. Difficult to find an evening meal without driving some distance
- Smudjer (10/5): Unique property. - The property is totally unique and steeped in history, originally built around 1250. I’d 100% stay here again.
- Tony (8/5): - Friendly staff but room a little cramped and did not expect wash basin in bedroom with toilet behind a rickety sliding door.
Breakfast was very poor with little choice, not restocked, teas and coffees in a flask that was cold, also run out of fruit juice.
- Brian (8/5): - Comfortable and Good stopover for my work.
Good base if you want to visit the area & Cotswolds
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (2/5): Manor House is just awful - I don’t know if the non main house rooms are better but my room in the
Main house was so awful I had to check out. After a meeting arrived back at hotel late , it was dark and dangerous, couldn’t get in main door, no reception, finally telephoned someone and had to put my shoulder against the door to get in! The room was awful. Incredibly dated and basic, bits all over the floor. The heating didn’t work, turned on a heater and filled the room with a smell of hot dust. The overflow in the bathroom ran continuously and sounded like the niagra falls and every few minutes a fan kicked in like a train passing. On the bed were two tiny towels. There was no bedside table so you had to walk across the room to turn off the nearest light and somehow find your way back into bed in the pitch dark. The bathroom resembled student halls. The corridor carpets were stained and basic. All staff disappeared early evening so there was no one to assist. I checked out at 10.30 pm which shows how bad it was. I have since found reports of the fan and toilet overflow on other websites so this is clearly known about but not attended too.
With the help of Hotels.com I did manage to get a refund. !
- Annick (10/5): EXCEPTIONAL PLACE OF PEACE, REST AND EXCELLENCE - CHARNEY MANOR IS A GEM FOR PEACE, REST, FOR A RETREAT.
WELCOMING, WARM AND KIND TEAM.
PLACE IS VERY CLEAN.
GREAT BREAKFAST.
SURROUNDED WITH SONGS OF BIRDS, SHEEP BLEETING AND NICE WALKS.
THANK YOU LORD FOR THIS WONDERFUL PLACE. AMEN.
- Steven (9/5): Lovely - Beautiful 12th century building. No options for dinner on site but lovely staff and very quiet location.
- Tony (9/5): Superb -
- Graham (10/5): - Lovely Staff would stay here again
- Keith (8/5): Will recommend to others and intend to return - Historic manor House. Peaceful location. Excellent breakfast provided. Staff very friendly and helpful.
- Fiona (7/5): Good -
- Min (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roger (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful quiet place, very historic, great continental breakfast
- Miguel (8/5): Very good -
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keith (6/5): Adequate, but not what we had expected. - The building and garden are interesting in a quiet village. It was not obvious (when booking) that the hotel was in fact a conference centre. For that purpose it was fine, but it has (perhaps necessarily) a 1950s a slightly 'tired' feel.
- Anne (8/5): Very good -
- Nigel (8/5): Very good -
- Tanya (9/5): Superb -
- Daniella (8/5): Very good -
- Mark (5/5): Just bad luck. No car, so was reliant on taxis (Costly) Local pub just closed… so no dinner. - Quiet, pretty. A period mansion in a lovely area. I was in the only room without an en-suite. The room was boiling hot from around 12am. So sleep was difficult. As an old mansion with single glazing, these are the things you need to consider. Even with the windows open all night it was baking.
- Jennifer (9/5): Wonderful overnight stay in beautiful , peaceful Manor House with beautiful gardens too. - Wonderful peaceful feel.
Very helpful, kind staff.
Beautiful old building in heart of the Cotswolds My room was a bit hot
