Guest Reviews
- John (8/5): - The room we stayed in was ok. They could do some work on the door. House keeping could also wipe down the window shutters.
- Brenda (10/5): - Breakfast was great.
Staff are wonderful.
Will stay there again
- Woody (8/5): - Friendly staff
Charming bed & breakfast
nearby shops/dining
convenient parking
- Martha (10/5): - Very nice, quiet property.
- Julie (10/5): - The staff here is fantastic! I love the history that is acquainted with the the Smithfield Inn. Although it is a very old establishment, my room was clean and had all the modern amenities other hotels have.
One of the special features is they have an agreement with the Smithfield Gourmet Bakery. You receive a voucher for up to a $12 value for a HOMEMADE breakfast of your choice!
Smithfield is a very charming, safe, walkable town with many shops, restaurants and sites to see. I have family who recently moved here and the Smithfield Inn is where I'll be staying when visiting.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There was no hot water in the shower. The thermostat was broken.
- Stephanie (8/5): - We stayed 2 nights and the room was clean and it Is very convenient to restaurants and boutique style shops. The wait staff and the cleaning staff were very friendly and helpful. The management was aloof and didn’t explain the breakfast hours to us or seemed concern when the hairdryer blew (which happens). When my husband took the broken hairdryer to management they thanked him and never offered to look for another one. There was no urgency to find a replacement. It was not a bad experience just not a positive experience to return.
- Pamela (10/5): - This was out second stay at Smithfield Inn. It is a beautiful inn. The staff was very nice & hospitable. The first time we stayed we ate breakfast in the inn dining room which was much better than the bakery/cafe where your abreast now.
- Anne (10/5): - Had a great time in Smithfield and our stay at the historic Smithfield Inn. Wonderful people and look forward to returning again.
- Craig (8/5): - The property was two buildings on Main Street of the town of Smithfield. The building we stayed in was a detached building, The Inn itself had considerable history.
When we arrived Friday evening there was a wedding event and a reception on Saturday, which occupied the main building. Since we were staying in the detached building, this was not a problem. However, on Saturday morning, we learned early that the exterior of the building was being renovated. Nail guns and banter of the work crew was a bit jolting. We were visiting family so we did not spend a lot of time there during the day. There was a dinning room and bar in the main building but we did not experience either. Being an old building we found there were not sufficient electric outlets for the items we usually travel with, computer and recharging of devices, phones, etc. There was a TV in our room but the offerings were very limited. The bed was comfortable but it did not leave much space to get around in the room. The bathroom was sufficient and the shower had been renovated.
- Chris (8/5): Only one disappointment - The only drawback was that we were expecting a king sized bed but had a queen. Other than that, it was a great place in a great town.
- Emma (10/5): - Loved my stay. No complaints
- Steve (6/5): Live and Learn - No check in, had to call get our reservation, had to accept another person’s cancellation room which Queen bedroom when suppose be a suit with a king size bed. Free breakfast down the street was a positive.
- Leigh (10/5): - It was a phenomenal experience in a beautiful setting, quaint and charming town, with an exceptionally friendly owner and staff! The shops are really nice and the location is close to other areas of interest. Highly recommend!
- Emma (10/5): - Very personable clean private quiet. And the price was great. Variety of anything on the main drag Ice cream Breakfast etc. Had a Bar Dinner hour. It was great. And hade Fine dining atmosphere.. enjoyed my experience
- Felicia (4/5): - What surprised me is all the good reviews when there was no one to greet us. We called several times just to figure out check in because the only instructions were just the key lock code. The staff were pleasant and kind. The room itself was fine. Checking out was worse, no one was there. I called and saw people in the back but they let the call go to voicemail. No instructions how to return the key, it was like no one cared if we left, how was our stay, nothing. We eventually left the key in the room since we didn't want the key floating around. Bare bones, when we saw people they were very kind. Otherwise it was a weird stay, like they didn't want us there.
- Stephen (8/5): - Lovely property and full of history.
Check in was wonky and check out was worse. To check in we had to go to the bar/restaurant and ask "where's check in?" The bartender checked us in, which was fine, but a bit odd.
When we checked out the next morning the downstairs restaurant was closed and locked, so there was nowhere to check out. We ended up leaving the physical key in our room and hoped for the best.
Going forward, the hotel should alert guests to the lack of check out, to aleviate confusion. We emailed and texted the Inn, but never received a reply.
With all of that said, we loved the property and would stay there again.
- Michelle (10/5): - Room was clean and comfortable- location was perfect!
- Susan (8/5): - the property was unique and historic colonial. great location.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful historic Inn. Restaurant was excellent and we loved sitting in the garden.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - This is a quaint inn with great food and a wonderful innkeeper.
- Robert (10/5): - The inn is a gem in the heart of Smithfield and Bill and his staff are top notch! The food was excellent!
- VALERIE (10/5): - It was attractive snd very comfortable and sooo convenient to shops, food, ice cream history. Everyone was so friendly.
We were confused by the Inn restsurant not being open at anytime we were there without any sign or note or anything telling us when it was open. We had menues in yhe room but no way to tslk to anyone about eating there. Maybe not a problem during a busier season or on weekends.
- William (10/5): - We have stayed here many times. It is always an enjoyable experience and the Inn is beautiful. Requested we go there for my bd weekend.
We had a great time. I highly recommed.
- Jen (10/5): - Historical property in an excellent location. Service and food on site was exceptional. Great town and we would absolutely stay here again.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Excellent and friendly communication. Nice historic home and town.
- Patti (10/5): - Such a quaint and neat place
- JOHN (10/5): - Check in and check out extremely easy. The Inn staff and restaurant staff were very helpful and cordial. I stayed in the Captain Mallory Todd suite and highly recommend this accomodation. Historic Smithfield has a lot to offer just steps away from Smithfield Inn. Hope to return at some point in the future.
- Julia (10/5): Comfortable but Quirky - This was our second visit. We had a three room suite that was very comfortable. Our room was over the front porch on Main Street and it still managed to be a peaceful space.
We enjoyed a good meal in the restaurant.
I would call this a quirky place because on Sunday no staff was present. We didn't know to expect this so missed getting coffee pods for our room. Next time we visit we will plan ahead.
- Pablo (10/5): - The most important reason you should stay at the historic Smithfield Inn is because George Washington slept there. Second the staff’s hospitality is amazing, good people work at the Inn. Third there are few places to enjoy eating there. Overall I would not mind living in this beautiful town. Smithfield Inn best place to stay and rest.
- Debora (10/5): Great Stay - We loved the Garden House and our room. It was nice to have the place to ourselves last night. We will be back.
- Timmy (10/5): - A very nice place w/ a lot of history, great staff, great small safe area Would recommend to any that ask ✔️
- Catherine (10/5): - Charming, historic property in a quiet area. Our room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast at the bakery a few doors down was delicious and the staff we met both at the Inn and the bakery were so friendly and helpful!
- W A (10/5): - We have stayed at this property many times.
We were upgraded on this trip. The room was very nice, more space, sofa, fireplace, etc. Very accomodating owner.
It is a safe area. My husband sits on their fabulous porch and reads while I shop. I can walk to all the downtown shops and many restaurants. We did not eat there on this trip but we always enjoy the meals at this inn. We look forward to returning to this property. We are always up for a trip to "Hamtown" and "the Inn"
- SIMUEL (10/5): - The ambience was old worldly!
- Don (6/5): - Great location and town. Inn was OK. No real services to speak of - room was comfortable, but didn’t have a functioning shower or hot water in the sink. Staff was nice, but couldn’t resolve our issue with the shower, or offer another room.
- Marie (10/5): Small VA Treat - Comfortable, well-locates, easy to arrange, excellent dinner menu. Relaxed staff.
- Kathleen (10/5): - Smithfield is a quaint southern town. The tavern had great food and the Waite staff was super nice even though they were very busy. I would definitely come back
- Deborah (10/5): - Charming
- LarryL. (10/5): - Safe.Quiet,Walkable and Easy Parking
- Thomas (8/5): - Smithfield Inn is in a great location of town, walkable to shops, restaurants and a brewery. It is an old building, no elevators and most rooms are on the second floor. Restaurant and bar at the Inn are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so keep that in mind. You can only get ice at the bar. We had a problem with the air conditioning in our room and we were able to change rooms after one night. Parking convenient, voucher for breakfast at cafe 1 block away. Staff in restaurant/bar and housekeepers were very friendly. Weird check in after hours, they give you a code to get in the door and leave key in envelope on a table in the hallway. No other information given. The Inn keeper called us prior to arrival to explain the door code. I spoke to her several times during our stay and ran into her once as she was leaving. I'm not sure if she ever comes into the Inn. It felt like we were the only guests, so I'm not sure why we got the room with the broken A/C and very small room (Sprigg room).
- Verified traveler (6/5): A quick stop over - Although we enjoyed our last stay here our room was in an annex, and very tight quarters. The biggest problem was the incredibly loud AC unit, necessary given the heat but making it hard to sleep and also making the space feel very damp. We never came face to face with the proprietor.
- julia (10/5): Cozy and Convenient Inn - The Inn is located in the middle of all the shops and restaurants on Main Street. Our room was next to the garden with parking right behind the house. The restaurant was an added bonus with very good food atmosphere.
- Tammy (4/5): - Loved the feel of the place, location and amenities. However, by 8 PM the place is all closed up other than your room.
You can’t access ice, may or may not see any staff, they all leave. The mattress was terrible, rolled to the center of the bed. Husband ended up getting eaten by bed bugs, his back, arms and legs. Our visit started great up on arrival but by morning things were different.
- Vicki (10/5): - Wonderful 2 night stay in downtown Smithfield. Great Saturday dinner and really great breakfasts served at the bakery cafe walking a block away from the hotel. Staff is very friendly and accommodating
- Jerry (10/5): - GREAT PLACE AWESOME HISTORY
- James (10/5): - Fun overnight from Norfolk for a quiet evening and great dinner at the inn.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - One night stay. Amazing! Old world charm with modern amenities. Staff were welcoming and attentive. I will definitely stay again.
- William A (10/5): - We have stayed here several times. It is vintage and pretty. It is always quiet and convenient to everything. Love the front porch. Dining in the dining room is lovely with nice options.
- FAY (6/5): - —
- W A (8/5): Smithfield Inn - We enjoyed our stay at Smithfield Inn. We have stayed at this facility several times before. The only issue we have staying at this Inn is that we have to go down the street for breakfast. The breakfast voucher for two provided by the Inn is for $24. I ordered a $5.99 bagel sandwich and my husband ordered a $9.99 fritatta. We each had a cup of coffee at approximately $3.00 each and that was all. At the counter, the waitress said we owed an additional $9.00 plus. This did not include tip. We questioned it slightly but did not want to make a scene. We do not know how a breakfast that should have cost $21.98 less tax, ended up costing $33.00 plus,
not including the waitress tip. The breakfast issue was the only complaint we had with our stay.
- Eileen (8/5): - The cottage house was really cute, I liked tha there was a common space inside with a fireplace. I wish there was pictures of the house and descriptions because I was not quite sure what to expect. There were 4 rooms and 3 bathrooms. One room was supposed to have 2 twin beds but there was only a double so that was disappointing to find.
- Vicki (10/5): - Wonderful staff & accommodations. Peaceful & very pleasant stay.
- Mark (10/5): Awesomeness!!!😊💯 - Great experience, excellent service and food!👍👍
- William (10/5): - Beautiful old inn, great staff very friendly and informative about the area. The next time we’re in the area will try to book it again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A Taste of Smithfield - We enjoyed our stay. We liked the historical setting and accommodations. The Staff were friendly & helpful. We will be back
- Mary j (6/5): - Ants found in bathroom and some in bed.
- Marshall (10/5): - Great
- Elizabeth (8/5): - this was a charming place in the small town with a great area for walking.
- Adam (8/5): - Great place and quiet . We did have ALOT of issues with keys not working getting locked out etc. Staff was great.
- ELIZABETH (8/5): Love Smithfield - The Smithfield Inn is an older establishment but I love the history and quaintness. My room was spacious, comfortable, clean. I loved that we could walk from the Inn right into the lovely town of Smithfield!
- Reba (8/5): - Towels were old and dingy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Would love to go back! - Smithfield Inn was absolutely lovely!! We stayed in the Sinclair room on the first floor. We couldn’t hear any noise throughout the night. It came with cable tv and antique features. The bathroom was remodeled. The ceiling was peeling and has damage, but not interfering.
- Casey (10/5): Charming! - Charming! Slight mix up with booking, but it was handled in a timely manner. This Inn is quite charming, clean and adorable. Everyone was friendly. We made dinner reservations, the food and service were fantastic! All guests receive a free breakfast at a nearby bakery. The food was great, but the service not good (bakery only). Overall- fantastic quick trip. Lots of boutique shops around to explore. Had a great time!
- Barbara (10/5): - The history
- Donald R (10/5): - Bill and staff were very friendly and accommodating. Our room was comfortable and quaint.
- Layton (6/5): Hard to reach directly on the telephone - My wife became ill after the cancellation deadline, so we were unable to travel to Smithfield. I made several courtesy calls to inform the hotel, but no one would answer the phone.
