Guest Reviews
- Alessia (10/5): - Appartamento tipico
- Justin (10/5): Top verblijf!
- Annika (10/5): Absolutely amazing, super beautiful house and wonderful hosts, would recommend! - The house is beautiful and spacious, with lots of natural light. The location is super central and the hosts were very helpful in preparing us for our stay. Nothing, it was all perfect!
- Amanda (9/5): -
- Alison (10/5): Lovely traditional house, would choose again. - In a lovely quiet area but with lots of lovely little local shops and easy access to trains.
- Ilgın (10/5): -
- Kevin (10/5): -
- Ron (8/5): A terrific and memorable stay - Location and bikes and lots of space Found extra pillows but had no pillow cases. Duvets need replacing, because they are very clean but worn out.
- Ena (9/5): -

- Alex (8/5): - Responden bastante rápido a los mensajes.
- Kelly (8/5): -
- Brianna Nguyen (10/5): -
- Nanami (8/5): -
- George (9/5): Good location and great for families - Traditional and great for families and good location the bikes were great
- Madalene L. (10/5): The true Machiya experience - The machiya is cosy and ideal for a family. Sleeps 6 of us in 3 rooms comfortably. The location is perfect for us with convenience stores just a short walk away.
Also very close to attractions like Nishiki Market and Nijo Castle, all within walkable distance. There were bicycles provided and it was easy navigating the roads. The place is also close to the bus stops, with direct bus to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and a direct tram to Arashiyama bamboo grove. Made travelling to the tourist sites very convenient.
Everything was provided...towels, toiletries, coffee and tea, and umbrellas. We could wash our clothes in the washing machine, laundry detergent was also provided.
Highly recommend this place to anyone coming to Kyoto and looking for a machiya experience, this place is located on a quiet road. Nothing....keep your luggage light as you need to carry it up a flight of stairs. Two rooms are located upstairs, with one room downstairs.
- Grazia (10/5): - Bellissima casa giapponese! Accogliente e pulita. Tatami molto comodi!
- Brian (9/5): -
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional traditional well appointed Japanese home that easily accomodated a family of 5 adults. - Exceptional traditional Japanese home very near all amenities & with a wide variety of interesting restaurants within easy walking distance. Very quiet but near excellent transport stops. 5 near adult family enjoyed a week's great roomy accommodation & would love to return.
- Ataman (9/5): Looking forward to staying again - The garden was wonderful especially when it was rainy outside. The house was beautifully renovated and kept its charm but at the same time the amenities were modern enough Having 5 bicycles inside was blocking large section of the hall. Futons could be more comfortable.
- Tuuli (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marks (8/5): Very good -
- Anthony (9/5): Superb - Lovely wooden house in a great location. Lots of eating options nearby. Easy transport options close by. The house has real character and the use of the bikes was a real bonus
- Marian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caitlin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kathryn (10/5): Exceptional - Authentic Japanese house. Warm and very clean. Great location next to a variety of food outlets and shops
- Martina (8/5): Genuine local experience in Kyoto. - Genuine Japanese house in a real local neighbourhood. 2 of the 3 rooms are traditional Japanese sleeeping mats (keep this in mind). Handy location, hosts are very polite and responsive. Free bikes are really useful. Parking lot a very short walk up the road. Keep in mind that because the property is one of many small wooden houses in a local neighbourhood, you need to keep very quiet. One of our group made a short, quiet phone call outside on the vacant lot across the road for privacy, and we received a complaint from the neighbours via our host!
- Broekhuizen (8/5): Very good -
- Emma (10/5): Great family option for Kyoto - Loved the location and having some extra room for the family. The bikes were great, and we were even able to request a helmet for my son with no problem.
- Tina (8/5): What a great experience. Clean and the electric blankets were a good touch. - It was great to stay in a traditional Japanese house great experience
Bikes were included which was fantastic to get around Nothing really just not much room to put suitcase.
- Kari (10/5): Perfect traditional home on quiet street - next to everything! - The location was incredible. Just off the main street in Kyoto and yet on a quiet side street - restaurants two doors down. Small mom & pop yummy places. Plus a shopping corridor just a few houses away. The house had two rooms and a nice sitting area, bath, and kitchen met the needs of people who mostly eat out. Can I say again the bathroom with the tub was a super nice treat - especially since it was winter when we were there.
- Leeanne (9/5): Superb -
- Jean-pierre (10/5): Lovely place! Made my rethink how I should live when I go back to Canada. - Shounsai is what I think a typical Japanese homestay would be like. Nothing !
- Joanne (8/5): Cosy & atmospheric - Beautiful traditional house in a lovely neighbourhood. Has everything you need and feels cosy. Noise. You can hear everything clearly from the street & next door. We were also unfortunate to be there during loud building works opposite.
- Francesca (10/5): Very beautiful traditional home in Kyoto with a lot of space. Very confortable tatami room and footon - Amazing traditional house A bit far from the center but well connected via bus
- Phong (10/5): Come back Kyoto, it means come back Shounsan - Nice
- Łukasz (10/5): A unique living experience in the middle of Kyoto - The experience of staying in this house is worth the slight discomforts of small room sizes, bad sound proofing, and no storage space in the house. The location is very convenient, the interior looks just as great as the exterior, definitely a fun stay. The bad is mostly due to this being a classic wooden house with tatami mats. You need to make sure you know what you're getting into. We don't consider those things to be dealbreakers. The sound from outside is rather loud at night, there's no actual doors to the tatami bedrooms (the sliding doors only offer partial privacy and no sound proofing), doing laundry is complicated by the need to dry things in the bathroom.
- Yana (10/5): Exceptional - Super clean, everything is documented very well in a separate book which helps a lot! Location is 100/100, we walked to/from the house to almost all top attractions! The home itself very authentic, very traditional, esp thanks to the owners for the garden - it made the start of the day excellent
- Muriel (10/5): Exceptional - Shounsai appartement provides bicycles. We enjoyed cycling in Kyoto very much along the narrow streets. We only took public transport to go to the train station. The communication with the lodger was excellent and smooth.
Very nice neighbourhood.
- Niccimw (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kristine (9/5): Lovely and authentic home! - Gorgeous and rare Japanese traditional home in a fantastic location! The step up to the main living level is very steep and would be challenging for anyone with physical limitations.
- Kaleigh (9/5): It was wonderful! - The staff was wonderful and always responded quickly and kindly. They offered helpful information and guidance to make our stay very easy and accessible.
- Bec (10/5): Highly recommend- perfect for the 4 of us. - Really cosy traditional family home style accommodation. Futons came with electric blankets & the 2 single beds were super comfy! Everything you needed was provided. So close to Sanjo shopping street- 1 minute walk! Kamee coffee is delicious! 2 supermarkets close by but open at 9am FYI. The 4 bikes provided gave us so much joy & a full day riding around to explore. Close to a couple of train stations & only about 1/2 hr away from Fushimi Inari Shrine. Our stay was perfect & highly recommend 😉🍜🥇 No iron!! I need to iron my clothes & this was the only item not provided ☺️
- Tengku (10/5): Public transportation was very nearby and convenient stores were a few steps away. The machiya has everything we needed - Everything was complete. A home away from home 😊
- Michelle (7/5): Good stay - Location just 2 minute walk from bus station and a 10 min walk from nearest train station. Walls were very thin. We could hear everything outside but it is an older house so it was understandable
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional - A beautiful traditional home close to the market. A delight to stay in.
- Rachel (10/5): Great location and perfect Japanese home - So lovely. Great location and so close to shops. The hosts very very helpful too. Loved it
- Chou (9/5): Superb -
- Yandhinur (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jayme (8/5): Very good -
- Dávid (10/5): A wonderful experience in Kyoto at Shounsai! - Traditional Japanese building near Nijo Castle in Kyoto. 5 minutes to a very good bus stop (lines 9, 12 and 50 are all useful for tourist trips), 10 minutes to the Tozai Subway line and the Nijo Train Station, 15 minutes to Shijo Omiya Station (where you can get on the Randen Line, which takes you straight to Arashiyama!) The facilities (kitchen, bathrooms, toilets etc.) are great, the rooms, beds and futon are all comfortable. Beautiful view of the little Japanese garden behind the building!
Those traveling during fall and winter seasons should take into account that the house cools down during the night (as most traditional Japanese houses do), though the air conditioning and the heating in the beds helps. (Those who really hate the cold should come prepared!) Nothing comes to mind, great stay!
- Philippa (10/5): Interesting little house to stay a locals part of Kyoto. - Nice room. Great location.
- Isabillah (8/5): First family trip in 20 years! - The location was exceptionally good for us. There were 2 train stations nearby to choose our pick for the travel of the day although one of them was a good 15 min walk. The area was wonderfully peaceful and calm that my family and I enjoyed that.
The lodging itself was as depicted in the pictures taken and it was a beautiful house with sufficient rooms for all of us to rest well. The heating pads in the beds were a helpful tool to keep us warm throughout the nights and the heater were running fast and warm to not feel any discomfort during our stay. The facilities were great and sufficient for us, we had to use the nearby laundromat due to the lack of a dryer and the amount of clothes couldn't dry in time. But since it was nearby, it was very convenient.
I have slightly elder parents and they however had to sleep in the beds instead of the floor so they had to go up to the 2nd level which was slightly tough on them. It was short sighted on my part and would like to emphasize that to anyone with elderly parents regarding this point but other than that, they were absolutely satisfied with the stay!
- Max (10/5): Excellent location and beautiful property - The property is so beautiful and very spacious for a small space. It contains everything you’d need to live there. Would definitely stay again Not much.
- Yee (9/5): Superb -
- Keith (9/5): Superb -
- Megan (9/5): Superb - It was close to public transport and great undercover market.
- Kwok (9/5): Superb -
- Phuoc (10/5): Great property and excellent location to enjoy your experiences In Kyoto 😃 - The property is clean and walking distance to everything. You get to experience a traditional Japanese house as you relax and enjoy your trip.
There are bicycles at the house which you can ride around the neighborhood. There are plenty things to do around at night filled with different restaurants, bakeries, supermarket, small family businesses, and stuff.
The amenities provided are great for a family. The local buses can take you to local tourist destinations and to Kyoto (train) station. At the Kyoto station you can travel to Osaka or elsewhere.
Enjoy your trip…
2023 Japan Vacation (TT family) There is nothing I didn’t like.
- Voca (10/5): Great location, comfy, beautiful - Location, the traditional Japanese house vibe, the bicycles I can not use moka pot in the stove to brew coffee.
- Wtanya (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (10/5): Great space, location and staff. - Amazing space, well set up with everything you need. great location. The Crème brûlée donut shop round the counter is life changing.
The property management team, especially Mayumi, were super helpful and provided all the necessary information.
- Connie (10/5): Exceptional - The Shounsai house had everything we needed & more! The bicycles came in very handy.
- Frances (9/5): Great to ride the complimentary bikes around the city. The house is a great change to a hotel. -
- Ayelet (10/5): the host is helpful. the apartment is great. - perfect apartment. perfect location it’s really convenient. You have everything you need in the apartment
- Dongjue (9/5): Unforgettable Traditional and Modern Living at Shounsai Apartment in Kyoto - I had an unforgettable stay at Shounsai apartment in Kyoto. The traditional Japanese architecture and elegant decor were stunning, and the authentic Japanese tearoom was a highlight. The apartment was well-equipped with modern amenities. The location was convenient and peaceful. There are bycicles for free that we can use to discover Kyoto. Overall, I highly recommend Shounsai for a unique and comfortable stay in Kyoto. There was some noise from the street outside at times, which could be heard at night. If you have ear plugs, there won't be a problem.
- Laura (9/5): Superb - Location is excellent, really good value for money, the bathroom was excellent!
- Pin-yin (10/5): Exceptional - the rooms are cozy and in japanese style with 2 toilets, they are all clean and the space is all right for 7 peoples. no everything is super! :)
- Yuri (8/5): Very good -
- Vicky (8/5): Very good - This house has everything you need for a family to use as a base to explore Kyoto, just in compact Japanese style.
It is next to one of the under cover shopping streets, so you can go out and get food etc even in bad weather. It is a10 min walk from the castle and If you like walking you can walk to Nishi markets and the other undercover shopping areas, and to the palace. A 10 minutes walk to tram like train that goes to Arashiyama.
The house was great with 2 teenagers who wanted to explore on their own sometimes. And no keys to loose just an electronic key pad on the door.
The bikes make it easy to get anywhere, the small roads are very bike friendly, just make sure you understand the bike parking rules and have cash handy to pay for the parking.
The 2 beds were super comfy and the futton mats had an extra foam mat layer so the kids were comfy too. All beds had electric blankets which was appreciated in the snowy weather while we were there.
There is a washing machine and you can hang clothes in the bathroom and switch on a heat fan. Clothes take a day or so to dry though. There is a laundry near by if you need quicker.
Deep bath was great be too, to warm up in winter.
Great instructions in English for all the electrics.
Staff were very responsive and helpful to questions. We were in Kyoto in very cold weather, where it snowed for days. Whilst there is an air conditioner in all the rooms this wasn't sufficient to keep the front section of the house where dining table and kitchen are, warm enough. The front windows and doors are drafty ( it is an old Japanese house). However in normal weather I think it would be fine. We were very warm in bed though.
I'd suggest some curtains over the front windows to block the drafts in winter.
Also be aware the heating cuts out occasionally as it regulates itself, and comes back on again later. Might be worth putting this in the instructions.
- Yuri (9/5): Superb -
- Home (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yuet (8/5): Very good - Close to butcher, supermarket and convenience store. We liked the restaurants, cafe and bakeries nearby. Bathroom was nicely equipped with drying facilities for laundry. Lots of character in the building. Host was accommodating on luggage storage. Kitchen on the small side and suited for simple cooking. The shopping street nearby was surprisingly quiet with many stores shut through the week. (maybe the effect of the pandemic on small businesses)
- Katharina (10/5): great location, nice staff, perfect experience. - it was very special to stay in an entire little Kyoto home, it was extremely clean and perfect location.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location family friendly - The house was nice traditional Japanese. The people at the rental office were very nice and helpful. You get a free taxi ride from their office to the rental house. The house is located 20 meters from Sanjo st. Which is a cover street with lots of restaurants and little shops. Also there is a grocerie store where u can get anything u need. It’s also a high traffic for bycicles. Nijo station is about 10 minutes walk. The house has 2 toilets one upstairs and one downstairs which is very convenient. We really didn’t use the kitchen since we ate out everyday but if want to cook you have all the necessary stuff to do so.
Overall we had a great experience definitely we would stay there again.
