- OCRoadDog (10/5): Pure Bliss In An Unorthodox Way - First off -- if you are debating whether a sidequest to the extremely isolated and hard-to-get-to coastal escape known as Shelter Cove is worth it, I can assure you -- run, don't walk, and enjoy every second of this tiny slice of untouched California utopia. The Inn of The Lost Coast is a beautiful, foggy dream you will find yourself revisiting time and again in your mind. Is it the Ritz? Absolutely not. And it's all the better because of that. The moment the cool evening breeze caresses your neck as you lay atop a 40 year old mattress and a thin TJ Maxx comforter, you will know exactly what I mean.. The Inn of The Lost Coast fits like your favorite pair of old shoes. ENJOY.
- 96bernadettep (8/5): Spectacular ocean view from room uncomfortably close to cliff edge - Spectacular ocean views from all rooms come with the cost of the hotel being uncomfortably close to the edge of a surf-pounded cliff that appears to be eroding. I may be a nervous Nelly about this but I would have slept better a few hundred yards further back. I’m not sure the cliff looks the same now as in the photos I saw beforehand. However, the hotel owners were very nice, the room well equipped with bowls, wine glasses etc, and the Black Sands Bistro was better than expected, with decent coffee even by Bay Area standards.

- meddvez (8/5): Very nice location. - Great location and atmosphere! We had the upstairs corner room, and the view was breathtaking. The ocean, the night sky, Milky Way - we enjoyed it all. Bring some food with you if you’re after hours - the pizza place is amazing but has a long wait as it’s the only place that’s open late on the weekdays. In the morning there’s a cafe downstairs with pretty decent breakfast and lunch options. The room was ok, had a coffee machine, a mini fridge, and a really nice shower. They could’ve refilled the shampoo and body wash though, as I had to stumble around wet looking for my travel ones.

Our stay was very quiet and the inn didn’t seem full. The bistro in the building was excellent. We had coffee, pastries, and lunch there. Our room was very worn. The carpet was frayed and stained but the rest of the room was clean. It was comfortable but could definitely stand to be refurbished. We never did see the Innkeeper. We checked in late and received a note asking us to check in at the office but we never found anyone there. We would have liked coffee for our second morning there. There was no shower gel in the container in our shower.

The Inn Of The Lost Coast captures the spirt and dare I say....magic?...of the true Shelter Cove experience. Is it the Ritz? Absolutely not. But as the swelling pacific tides rhythmically lash against the rocky seawall below, a perpetual updraft carries the bubbling seaspray up and over the edge of the bluff, stretching and waltzing through your slightly cracked patio door where you lay in a deep and wondrous sleep. And as you rest between a paper-thin, overwashed 1990's TJ Maxx costal themed comforter atop a mattress that dates back to the Reagan administration, this pure and intoxicating breeze caresses you ever so gently, punctuated by a stillness that can only be found here, in this special place, and you thank your lucky stars this is where you are, in this exact moment, having this experience in this exact way, and all the tiny misgivings you had assumed would be detriments are in fact....indescribably perfect. Also, the breakfast bistro connected to the hotel is staffed by the most pleasant, good-hearted people you will ever find. Grab a burrito for the road and leave with a smile. The Inn of The Lost Coast is a beautiful, foggy dream you will find yourself revisiting time and again in your mind. Enjoy.

We stayed in one of the biggest rooms with 2 queens, and while we had a large deck with great views of the ocean, the room was extremely dated with lots of wear and tear. The carpet was heavily stained, there were cobwebs in the corner and there were some clothes in the wardrobe! We were glad to be only spending 1 night here!

The little cafe on site had delicious food and the people running it were super nice I was really disappointed with the state of the room. It was obviously an older hotel that hadn’t been remodeled. The bathroom looked like a motel 6 bathroom. Tiny and old 1960’s fixtures. The toilet top had been broken and someone glued the porcelain back together. Pretty tacky. The hot tub took over 30 minutes to fill because the water was barely coming out of the tap. The bed and furniture were older and the chairs on the deck were old and broken and wouldn’t lay back. If you’re going to charge close to $500 a night, you need to upgrade your hotel and amenities. I would’ve felt it was a good value for $150-$200 a night but not more than double that amount.
- Emma (5/5): Disappointing for the high price of a room - The property is wonderfully located right on the coast, and the coast is incredibly beautiful. It’s also convenient that there’s a pizza restaurant and coffee shop connected to the building for convenience. The locals ate also very welcoming and nice. The property itself is very run down and outdated. When I got there and each time I needed something there was a single sheet of paper that just said “be back soon” without a bell to ring or number to text for help. I waited about 10 minutes just to check in. And when I needed something about 1 hour after that, the same sign and wait to ask for help. The carpet in the rooms felt damp, salt staining on the door knob and lock. There was also a dead bug in the bathroom when I got there. The holder on the shower wall with shampoo, conditioner and body wash physically fell off when I was using the body wash as hand soap. The sink/bathroom didn’t have separate beans soap. The biggest disappointment was though was just how expensive this hotel room was I think for what was there it’s worth between $150-$180 a night, but instead I think I paid around $350. Just really disappointing.
- B (8/5): Beware of what you are getting for the Price - The views are amazing in any weather! The pictures on the website make the rooms look like luxury rooms but they are just a step up from a Motel 6, a little more sq footage. Also the room you think you booked is not necessary the room you will get. We were told that there must be a glitch in the two systems between Hotel.com and the one they use. But the views will take your breath away any time of the day/night that we would book again but know what we are getting in a room.

We ended up at this hotel late one evening and the manager hooked us up with an amazing room, The room had a jacuzzi right by a view of the ocean which was breath taking. The bed was very comfortable and the rooms are very spacious. Just an amazing experience! The views from each hotel room are unbelievable! The owner of the hotel was very sweet an very pleasant to work with. Great price for all that we got in a one night package for sure. Also the breakfasts are very good ! 1rst class Hotel I must say. And best yet they have a pizza /restaurant right next door 10 stars plus for all! Thank you , Rena and Michael

- susanaD9110VE (10/5): Spur of the moment detour turned out great! - We were heading down to Santa Rosa, with a stop over in Ferndale. Decided to take a detour at the last minute to Shelter Cove and I'm so glad we did! While to steep mountain climb up, then down, with endless sharp turns was daunting, we loved the end result of Shelter Cove. We both thought about getting a room for the night and happened upon Inn of the Lost Coast. The gentleman at the reception was wonderful helping us to get the best deal for one night and gave us a great room with a wonderful ocean view of the King Tides. He recommended restaurants and places to view the sunset and the King Tides, in addition to giving us a history of the area. I wish we were staying more than one night. The room was nice with a small kitchenette, very clean, and homey feeling. Plenty of pillows and blankets.bi would definitely come back and I've already recommended it to others.

The cafe and pizzeria on-site make dining easy, and both are very good. Lovely, quiet place on a magnificent piece of coastline; well worth the drive over the mountains.

- E955CValexandrac (10/5): Quiet and Magical Experience - Husband and I came out with the dogs to enjoy and experience Shelter Cove. The Inn of the Lost Coast did not disappoint. Abby was super friendly during check-in and check-out. The room was immaculate with a comfy bed, fireplace, fridge and coffee maker! We were greeted with friendly deer as soon as we opened the back door to the patio. We all enjoyed sleeping with the back door open, listening to waves crash all night as God's perfect A/C lulled us to sleep. Black Sands Bistro has the best coffee on the coast and highly recommend anything from their menu, especially the homemade french toast with orange syrup. Mi Mochima across the street was amazing for dinner. We'll definitely be returning.

- 4seanq (10/5): Great for families and couples - The Inn of The Lost Coast is situated perfectly on the coast to listen to and watch the waves. Waking up and going to sleep with that sound soothes the soul. The rooms are super comfortable and roomy and the staff go above and beyond. Good food is at the hotel and also a short walk away and there's always entertainment in this small town, and NO TRAFFIC. We loved our walks down the coast in the mornings and hanging out at different spots each night at sunset, drink in hand and friendly people nearby. 11 out of 10

We specifically like the clean, quiet, no frills, non-Glitzy atmosphere. This older style of hotel is what we look for . Kitchenette very useful Grateful to have found all this here. Hard to find much we didn't like. I think due to the long travel realities of coming in or out of the Lost Coast a slightly later checkout time would be appreciated. Perhaps one in which some flexibility can be allowed due to particular circumstances-- and still permit the staff to clean up between say noon and 3:00.. Also a more stabile Hot tub temp would have been nicem

If you're looking for hustle and bustle and crowds, this place isn't for you, but if you're looking for seclusion and peace away from the rest of the world with the most stunning views a person could ask for then this IS the place to visit. We spent two days here in a corner view room and it broke my heart to leave. The view is breathtaking!!! We visited seal rock and watched the seals for a hour, abalone point was beautiful, and black sand beach was a little piece of heaven. All these places are within walking distance from the hotel. Our last day we visited the light house and saw about 30 sea lions. This isn't a five star resort but you are paying for the views and in my opinion if your focusing on the hotel room (which is perfectly fine) and not the wonders of this magical place you probably don't belong. The drive up is beautiful. It's a bit long and slow climbing up hill but it's worth it!! We will be back again and again.

- Madeleine (8/5): Beautifully located inn in gorgeous remote town - Shelter cove is a beautiful place, though a little hard to get to. The inn is in a great spot with all the rooms looking out over the ocean we watched the sun set over the pacific from our room. The staff was lovely and helpful. The rooms need an update urgently to justify the price we paid. When the weather is nice it doesn’t matter, the setting more than makes up for it, but based only off the room we stayed in it was over priced.
