Guest Reviews
- Chris (10/5): - Very friendly staff and tidy rooms. It was great value! Merci beaucoup !
- SAMUEL (10/5): - Really enjoyed my first time in the city of Dakar, while staying at this place. The staff (Adama and the ladies) were super helpful, the room was spacious, the WiFi and the breakfast were great. I was tempted to stay in all day.
- Bubacarr (6/5): - Difficult to locate and there was no soap in the bathroom. Quite neighborhood, nice breakfast and staff were helpful.
- Kelly (10/5): Convenient oasis! - Super lovely, peaceful and clean. The location is perfect - calm but also very close to some sights and beach areas. The staff is very kind and helpful - they can helps arrange taxis, buses (to Saint Louis for example) and cash exchanges. The rooftop space is amazing for relaxing and some nights has fun stuff going on life movie night. Highly recommend!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice people
Water pressure very weak though. You have to flush many times. Very reliable and exceptional staff. Quiet area. Film show every Tuesday on the rooftop.
- Ghaly (10/5): - Cool people ,nice receptionist
- faludafabia (10/5): Long live Hotel du Phare! - What a relief to find the Hotel du Phare! I wanted to book a room online before my trip but it was fully booked, on arrival to Dakar I went around to the hotel and found that someone had canceled their booking and the room was available ! What luck! I immediately moved out of my Airbnb which I wasn't happy with and moved into the hotel. Its a comfortable little hotel, convenient, and in a nice location. The best thing was they proposed us a driver for our stay, Mr. IBRAHIM who took us around Dakar for the next 4 days. He is an honest, kind, and friendly guy who will make a real effort to give you the best time in the city - and make you feel safe. You can contact him on +221777207783 . My french isn't great, and we still managed to communicate well and be understood by each other. We really enjoyed our stay here in the hotel, and Dakar because of Ibrahim !
- MonikaMili (10/5): Great rooftop and open cinema - I recently went to the rooftop terrasse at the hotel for open air cinema night ! It was great and pizza was delicious ! Highly recommend it and they have good variety of drinks and other food options ! They also do open cinema night every Tuesday which is a great activity to do after work
- Masha_S2 (8/5): Thursay night vibes - I know this hotel from the famous parties they throw every Thursday night. The rooftop is super cozy and nicely decorated, music is good, people are nice. The pizza also seems to be amazing.
I've had good times there. Definitely worth coming by on Thursday night (+ afterparty at So' Beach)
- BuppaTilahun (2/5): I wouldn’t recommend it - The receptionist is very friendly and (the owner ?) responded to emails promptly. I appreciate that. But I didn’t find neither the facility nor the services to be worthy of $70 per night. There are much cleaner, nicer, and cheaper places in Dakar - I found out later.
- yfishida (8/5): Quiet and enjoyable - While seemingly off the beaten track, this hotel is in the right place to be quiet and tranquil, yet accessible to main roads and beyond. The rooms are simple, yet adequate (and for the price). The rooftop bar/pizza is the best ... and with a view of the famous lighthouse (which is reachable by foot). And while the public areas are simple, they are comfortable and cozy that makes sitting around just a good thing, too.
- Marloes020 (8/5): The best rooftop-bar of Dakar - It's a very nice place to stay a few night in Dakar, comfortable rooms equipped with all essentials. Friendly staff.
Breakfast is not included, but you can order it in the patio. Good start of the day.
However, the best asset of the hotel is the rooftop terrace and bar. Great atmosphere!
- domamschler2404 (8/5): Open air cinema - Great night out. Watching a thriller on a roof top with the breeze in your hair comfortably seated in cinema chairs. Drinks from the bar and pizzas/burgers from an extremely slow kitchen. But all in all a good experience !
- Vishna (6/5): Popular but not for everyone - Popular spot in Dakar with special themed nights out organised on Thursday and movie nights on Tuesday. It is located in Les Mamelles. The bar is on a rooftop and has limited seating spots- most people are on the dance floor. It is definetely a bit of an acquired taste. The food is actually very tasty but the service is slow and it is pricey. In the colder months, it doesn’t have much of a wind shield.
- 909francesr (2/5): Overpriced and rude - If we had arrived earlier in the day we wouldn't have stayed but as it was late and after dark we had to endure it for one night. It's not an hotel but a hostel with multi-bed rooms and one shower room shared between six rooms. The sheets were ripped - understandable considering how wafer thin they were. Didn't get much sleep because it was very noisy with constant clunking up and downstairs until early morning. The office staff were aggressive rather than professional or understanding when we mentioned the sheets and the noise as we paid the next morning. Felt as ripped off as the sheets. Half the price would still be too much to pay for a bed in Hotel du Phare. My advice is to find somewhere else.
- _Domitilla6_ (10/5): Great burger, good pizza, lovely atmoshphere - Visited my sister in Dakar and we went several times to the upstairs bar/dining area as there was the football European Championship and Hôtel Du Phare offers big screens to watch it.
I was not a guest at the hotel, so I cannot comment on the rooms, but I can say the terrace is lovely and the service is also okay. We had both pizza and burgers and both were good - pizza was a surprise, and I'm Italian. The terrace is a nice space for parties, for dinners and also for a nice evening with friends enjoying a few drinks.
We also managed to catch one evening where they were showing a movie and that was nice - around 15/20 seats and the volume/quality was goood.
When in Dakar I will be back.
- sixthgentexan (4/5): Dreadful, avoid if you enjoy sleep - We are having a hard time understanding all the rave reviews for Hotel du Phare after a five-night stay that was far from relaxing or ideal. The courtyard & roof are charming enough, but the rooms are dim & dingy, with decaying fixtures & dirty & torn bedsheets. On first arriving, I asked how the air conditioner worked. It turns out that it doesn't work. We were moved to another room with a/c that works just fine.
However, in that room, which reeked of cigarette smoke & had more mosquitos than we could kill (and no mosquito nets!) , the toilet flushing mechanism was broken, leaving either water constantly (& loudly) running or us with water turned off & unable to easily flush. As the en suite toilet lacks a door (forget privacy with a see-through burlap curtain), it was so loud that it interfered with our sleep. We asked three days in a row for this problem to be repaired. No response. We finally messed with it & got it to temporarily work, but the situation was never resolved nor did the staff take our concerns seriously.
I don't expect luxury at this price point, but it's not unreasonable to expect a clean, quiet, & comfortable room for 52 Euros a night. We did not get that.
The hotel is in a safe neighborhood, but poorly secured. Often, the door to the reception was left unlocked & unattended, such that anyone could walk in & grab a key unnoticed, as we often did for our own room.
Finally, the Thursday night bar party on the roof means you can forget sleep in any of the hotel's rooms until late in the evening. We had good quality earplugs but were still subjected to non-stop thumping of terrible house music until the wee hours. It's obvious that the hotel's owners care far more about their bar/restaurant clientele than they do their hotel clients. We won't be back.
- Sim0na_2013 (10/5): nice, clean hotel in good location - The hotel has reasonable price and good location for taking short trips around Dakar. The airport is close by, you have less than 5 min walk to the main road where you can get a taxi to anywhere. There are also some small stores, pharmacy, bus stop, restaurant, bar in the neighbourhood. We had the room with shared bathroom and it was always clean and not busy at all. They have a restaurant and a bar in the hotel as well. Wi-fi is free and you can connect in the lobby or even in the room sometimes (depends on the location of the room). There is a great roof-top area where you can relax.
- TPA1592 (10/5): Loved it - Went to visit my brother who lives outside of Dakar and we stayed here for the first few days of our journey. The air conditioning was good, the staff was very friendly and it's in a safe neighborhood. One of the nights we stayed there was a party up on the roof. There was music and a really good crowd!
- Voyage8698 (2/5): not for families - Was advertised as good for families with spacious rooms - incorrect. Room was tiny. Constant loss of electricity. Best use of this hotel is for one night - quick in and out. Expensive neighborhood, hard to find reasonably priced food nearby. Wifi was inconsistent. It is more a bar than a hotel and music plays all night. Some of the workers are difficult to interact with. Breakfast is only bread, jelly and hot water. Very tiny hotel, with a very small salon with 10 rooms.
- ppcb (8/5): Nice place - I was there for 5 nights during my visit to Dakar. The place has charm and is well located near the airport, Ngor beach and Les Almeides. The basic rooms don't have bathroom. At the beginning they didn't want to accept my credit card but finally did. The employés are nice and the owner a bit distant. It's worth to stay.
- JamesBischoff (8/5): Small, Very Friendly and Totally Safe. - Hotel Du Phare is away from the centre centre of Dakar but within easy reach of many good restauarants and some wonderful sites. It is only a short taxi ride in to the centre of Dakar. It is small and totally safe. Gana, who is front of house for the french couple who own the hotel, is helpful and looks after the guests well. The rooms are totally adequate some have ensuite facilities, they have comfortable beds and effective aircon.
There is a small breakfast served (it would have been enhanced if fresh fruit had been offered) and a limited evening menu (which was excellent value for money). There is a delightful little bar and a roof terrace.
- toubabing (6/5): Funky comfort - Again, I write with the caveat that I've been living in rural Senegal for the last 3 months so everything is a change for me.
Hotel du Phare is pretty great--lots of character, bright colors and friendly staff. They have an airport service for 5,000 CFA fixed, which is great for late night flights and delays. Mamelles is a sleepy suburb of Dakar but is very centrally located to the monument, beach and Les Almadies. There are always taxis available.
They upgraded our room free of charge because they were going to have live music on night and didn't want it to disturb us. We ended up in a suite that could sleep 6! The lobby is brightly colored with comfortable chairs and a full bar.
The downside of Hotel du Phare was that the mosquito net was not the right size. Minor issue but still something worth noting. They have generators for the frequent power cuts in Dakar. Breakfast is unfortunately not included.
I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!
- 309lr (8/5): Nice place with reasonnable price: good to know! - Last time I went to Dakar I decided to go off the 'mass tourism' circle and to go for a more 'human size' thing. I definitely found it in Hotel du Phare! This a very nice family run place, the staff is really welcoming and helpful. The breakfast is simple (but quite typical: Senegalese seem to be fond of Nscafe!) and the rooms have really nice wax sheets. The other meals are very tasteful and traditionnal yet adapted to our western food habits. The colours are amazing and the terrace really enjoyable to get some fresh air at the end of a day of visits. Reading some reviews I was scared to find something dusty and always out of electricity but it was absolutely acceptable given the fact it s in Senegal (some people seem to forget where the actually are in their reviews!). Plus, it s rather close to the beaches and a very nice restaurant called La Calebasse which has amazing Gospel nights.
Definitely recommend this charming place and their very nice staff!!!
- Minatus (6/5): Nice Management and close to the Airport - After booking for this Guest house from booking.com, I called the hotel and requested they make airport pick arrangements for me and this was perfectly done. I got to the guest house and like most reviewers said the place is nice and clean with a unique African decor. My daughter and I tried their grilled fish and Chicken Yassa and the quantity was right for the rpice and the food as expected " nice and well flavoured". Once you are there, especially in the evenings, it feels like being in one of those rustic restaurants in Manhattan, Soho area, with a lively crowd at the bar and the reggae playing all day. To top it the Receptionist, I believe the female is Jainaba and the male Gana were very professional and very helpful. They organized transport for me to visit Lake Rose and Goree Island as well as other locations i visited. It was a pleasure to stay there.
- 454SteveN (8/5): Surprisingly comfortable! - Got to the hotel in the evening, completely exhausted after a long flight. Coming form the airport and off the main road into a rusty road, and I go like, really???. Where is this I've been booked? But to my surprise the staff were very friendly and the room I got was the biggest (so I was told) and very functional. The ambiance feels like an serviced apartment, very nice and cozy.
My first meal was some good Chicken and chips. The portions were also surprisingly large. Breakfast was very basic, but that worked for me. The hotel is reasonably priced, however, the meal prices seem a bit expensive.
Overall, I highly recommend the Hotel.
