Guest Reviews
- Laura (8/5): - The most dog friendly hotel I've stayed in. The owners were very hospitable and relaxed.
- Jess (10/5): Lovely stay - Lovely stay and was greeted by the most gorgeous dogs. Staff was very friendly and food was amazing.
- natasha roxanne (8/5): - Very doggy friendly hotel. Friendly staff. Made our dog very welcome.
Comfy bed. Room was clean. Lovely location.
Food was nice but not cheap.
Quality over quantity so this pushed the bill up as we had pudding too.
- marjorie (10/5): - Nice property. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed the one night we stayed but the morning breakfast was good.
At base of hill where harlech castle sits. Good exercise!
Would recommend.
- Kevin (2/5): Adults Only - The accommodation was dated but clean. The owner I found to be blasé and not very customer orientated. Whilst I appreciate the dog friendly ambience, having large dogs on the restaurant floor seemed a bit much. Not my favourite place tbh.
- Julie (4/5): - Not impressed. Poor value for money.
Our friends paid for night at the high class bron eifion hotel in criccieth it was amazing.
For a very similar price per night I had paid for two nights at this hotel all for our 70 th birthdays. I was embarrassed.
There was no comparison.
E.g choose breakfast on arrival and that’s what you got both days. Cereal was served up for you on the table . Small jugs of milk not enough for teas never mind cereal. When we asked for more milk the owner jokingly said do you all work for the milk marketing board. Not funny. The number of times we had to ask for more milk was embarrassing. Cooked breakfast very good quality. No fruit juice. All very managed like it was done on a strict budget.
Ordered first drinks asked if we wanted singles or doubles Said it’s husbands birthday a double. Then continued to be sold doubles making a heavy bar bill.
Food and wine prices exceptionally high for a hotel of this standard. 3 gins each, With two sides, 4 mains, 1 pudding and £35 bottle of wine, cheapest on menu which was heavily sedimented like a layer of paper on bottom. £284.
Rooms not cheap.
Second night didn’t eat in hotel. Returned 8 ish to find all locked up no bar for nightcap or anything. To be honest for the amount I paid it was a joke.
- Raika Antonielle (6/5): - The owners are very kind. The room was clean. Bed is so comfortable. However, check in is very restrict and late. The hotel was closed when we arrived and we couldn’t even leave the luggage there. It’s in front of the road and railway, which means it’s very noisy. The neighbourhood is very poor for food. Most of the places close at 8 pm for dinner.
- Paul (10/5): - Walk up to see the excellent town and castle. Walk down to see to beach and sea
- Virginia Polly (10/5): - Next time we would love to stay longer. Old school quality. Top marks 👍
- Verified traveler (10/5): Had a great stay. - Friendly staff, cosy room, no complaints.
- Richard (4/5): Hospitality redifined - A 3-night stay.
This ‘Hotel’ has an unorthodox approach to ‘Hospitality’ and is run for the convenience of the owners, not the guests. On booking, take note of the ‘nonrefundable’ terms – so no economic escape to alternative accommodation.
Hotel? Closer description would be a B & B with food or pub with rooms.
Short time frame for mealtimes. No comfortable lounge area, just a bar and restaurant. The bar may or may not be open. Depends upon the owner’s whim.
The one meal we ate was good, pricey for what it was, and the drinks were eye watering London Hotel prices. Breakfast good, but nouvelle cuisine size.
Bedrooms not serviced during stay.
The hotel is clean. The Kingsize bed was comfortable, the bedroom spacious, the walls are paper thin and the plumbing noisy.
Poor value
- Joyce (10/5): Great find. - Lovely room friendly hosts, excellent food.
We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed every minute.
- Philip (10/5): - The hotel was lovely the food was excellent room was excellent as well the staff were very friendly
- Xavier (10/5): Lovely place - Lovely place to stay, room was clean, staff were friendly and helpful and accommodating. Very good for dogs
- robert (6/5): A mixed bag - Certainly a quirky establishment with many positive features. Don't know whether it can be classified as a hotel or a restaurant/pub with 7 rooms or simply a b&b. There is a regimented timetable for guests with little flexibility. Clearly the owner has a routine and its a like it or lump it attitude.
The food is excellent although a little overpriced. Clearly there is an excellent chef although the menu is limited including breakfast options.
Having spent the day walking in the area i was very disappointed to find the bar had already closed at 8.30pm. Clearly this is not a hotel that caters for its guests.
On the plus side the ladies serving breakfast were excellent.
- Louise (8/5): Y Branwen - Good stay, big bed room 5, tasty breakfast. On a Weds no food available & bar closed. Is on lower level to castle. We found Harlech to be very quiet in eve only Indian tandoori open, pub does not sell food. Lovely beach over the dunes
- Iwona (10/5): - Very friendly atmosphere.
- Claire (4/5): - Property, had character, owner was pleasant, morning kitchen staff were professional and friendly
- Paul (4/5): - Supposed to be dog friendly but owners 2 huskies have free reign. Our dog was totally stressed by them. Harlech has little in the way of facilities and hotel was closed up around 9, no bar etc. We're booked in for 2 nights but just went home instead. Not worth the hassle to stay
- Dylan (10/5): - The staff were delightful and the food was wonderful.
- Richard (10/5): Great stay, highly recommended - Lovely stay. Please ignore any negative comments about the dogs (Kai & Storm) were extremely well behaved. The would lay quietly by the entrance to the dining room. The owner was entertaining & the food was good.
- Shane (8/5): Two night stay in Harlech - Older hotel on the main road below the castle. Rooms are small but functional. Bed pretty good. Service was fine. If you don't like dogs this is not the hotel for you, however the owners dogs are beautiful.
- Jessica (4/5): - Location was great, Harlech beach is beautiful along with the castle.
- D R (10/5): Great food and veey friendly - Great stay. Lovely food.
Salmon mousse to start and a perfectly cooked fillet to follow. My girlfriend had vegetable cassolette which she said was really good.
Friendly staff and 2 lovely huskies in the bar and reception. So well trained they stay out of the restaurant even when customers dogs are in there! Great breakfast.
Only go there if you like dogs! It must be impossible not to once you have met the owners huskies!
Rooms are comfortable with great showers.
As previous comments the range of spirits on the bar is great with some unusual tipples. Owner seems to have a real passion for some of them.
Walk to the beach at sunset - it sets behind the mountains on the other side of the bay and illuminates them in orange glow, stunning
- Verified traveler (6/5): Dog Hotel & Restaurant - Checking in was a palaver, an email received after booking stated we had to be there between 4 and 6, we called and emailed and eventually got the ok to arrive before 9pm, when we arrived after a 4 hour drive, we had to select what breakfast we wanted for both mornings.
The room itself was lovely but the floorboards in the room above need looking at, we could hear every step.
If you enjoy dogs being allowed to run free and jump on furniture or stare intently at you while you're eating, this is the place for you.
We've got a dog who is not in the least nervous but she was not happy having to pass the 2 massive dogs who lie in the reception area or at your feet in the restaurant. The seat at the table we had for dinner was covered in sand and dog hair and the manager/owner simply watched while the dogs chased another customer's dog around the dining room between guests tables while they were eating.
The attitude of the manager/owner was that he was doing customers a favour and we didn't feel feedback would be received well.
- D R (10/5): Great to be back! - So please to be back to this friendly place.
Great home made food as always. This time Pork Stroganoff with a salmon mouse to start and a simply to die for super rich chocolate torte with ameretto to finsh. Table alongside seemed really happy with the vegan choices.
Was quiet last time I was here but this time it was full with tables being reseated as earlier people left.
The huskies are always so friendly here and several customer dogs as well, it really is super dog friendly
Sad to see the grumpies at another table that expected all day drinking and obviouly should have been in blackpool!! Realy did not get what the area is about.
It is lovely quiet this time of year so you can enjoy exploring the dramatic landscape without traffic jams everwhere. It was even sunny!
Sure it will not be long before I am back again
- Angela (4/5): Wouldn't recommend - Took20 minutes to get into the building as no one was there tue neighbourwas banging on the doors. When checking in it was like talking to basil fawlty was surprised we wanted evening meal so was told 6-7 the bar was closed all day and no atmosphere. Meal was nice put very expensive for a couple of burgers, gin and tonic wasnt even a glass full couldnt taste the gin had a feeling it was watered down.Breakfast was lovely and nice staff. The room was comfortable but right opposite a train track. There was nothing open around all areas so had no choice of anywhere to eat
- D R (10/5): Can't wait to return! - So friendly throughout my short stay.
Super cute dogs! The huskies just help make it so welcoming.
Spot on Restuarant food in the eveing. Everything home made and you could see they really cared about what they were doing.
Came back from a walk and had a night cap from the impressive bar which they promote as having 50 Gins but must have had another 100+ bottles of other whisky, vodka, rums and liquers to choose from. A few which the owner seemed particularly passionate about, and for good reason.
Good wine list as well - this is definately a quality Restaurant with Rooms and not the pub it looks like from the outside.
It is a lovely area with lots of walks, impressive castle and huge beach. Far too short a visit and look forward to my return.
- Patrick (8/5): Dog friendly but £10 pn extra charge on arrival. - Hotel which looks like a bar downstairs which is why it was a bit of a surprise when everything closed down after the evening meals were finished - last sitting 7pm. That said there is another pub/hotel just down the road. While it is advertised as dog friendly I couldn't see any mention when booking and paying online that there is a separate charge of £10 per night for the dog which should perhaps be better advertised. We didn't have that in the previous accommodation. We had one evening meal which, while it looked nice, didn't taste of much. The salad didn't seem to have any dressing on it and when we asked for some extra we still couldn't taste it. That said, breakfast was excellent - I can definitely recommend the Glamorgan Sausages for vegetarians, they were the best I have tasted and the lady serving breakfast was really nice and well organised. If you happen to be walking the Wales Coast Path you have the added benefit that it passes within a few meters of the hotel.
- Jeffrey (6/5): Choose where you stay more carefully - First impression at check in was poor, after having to step over two dogs at reception. We do understand that the hotel is said to be dog friendly, but I feel we shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable because we didn’t have a dog with us. This was after my wife spotted the receptionist rolling her eyes towards a gentleman seated nearby.
The accommodation was ok and the bed comfortable, although the overall size of the bed gave very little room to manoeuvre.
The breakfast it’s self was very good, the staff serving breakfast was excellent. The only draw back for ourselves was sharing the breakfast room with so many dogs. This being said, it is promoted as dog friendly.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Awful, arrived around 2100 to a gent sat outside with 6 pints lined up to himself and the place all locked up. Eventually told by passers by to try the side entrance, phoned the number and eventually got in. Check in was ok. Got to my room which absolutely stunk, the smell was of cooking fats and incredible strong. Curtains didn’t fit the windows, paint peeling off the walls…. Never again! The smell was so bad I couldn’t face breakfast by the morning so left ASAP!
- Philip (10/5): Relaxing stay with lovely food - Stay was really pleasant. Food excellent, both breakfast and evening meals. Felt very safe. Hope to vist again in more normal times.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Tv needs to be larger and positioned differently.
I don’t have anything more to add
- Helen (2/5): AVOID - DO NOT BOOK - This hotel after discovering we could not come for the weekend ( due to government lockdown restrictions) not because we didn’t want to. Refused to answer our calls, Informed hotels.com they would ring and discuss this with us directly and didn’t. I rang everyday pleading for them to discuss even a penalty for not attending or a voucher for future stay. They still ignored all our phone and email messages. Ignored hotels.com attempt to communicate as well. Very unprofessional, uncaring and unhelpful. They have finally refused us a refund without any reason or communication. Would they rather we came illegally and against government instructions?? Horrible unprofessional hotel and not worthy of customers. We are considering taking illegal action
- TC (6/5): - The location is good, the price is reasonable, and Josh who runs reception is great. We didn't notice the "dog friendly" listing when we booked but the resident huskies are friendly and placid, and are no more than a trip hazard in reception. However, you should expect to encounter multiple guests' dogs throughout, including in the dining room during meals. Book if you're happy with dogs ruling the roost.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great hotel, staff were very friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent ( we had dinner and breakfast) all of a high quality and served well and promptly.
- Verified traveler (4/5): poor hotel - The website for this hotel was very misleading. The hotel badly need refurbishment. It was advertised as 4* and charged at that rate, which was so overpriced. There is no lounge area and the bar shut at 9pm, so the only option is to sit in a shabby bedroom.
Josh, the waiter/barman was lovely and very helpful and did his best.
- Janet (6/5): overpriced - Convenient location for the castle; just a short climb up the hill. Food was very good; certainly one of the best in this small town. The staff were really good, friendly and helpful. The room was adequate, with comfortable bed and drinks as described. There were no soap products in the shower, extractor not working and room was a bit grubby with cobwebs around and bit of damp showing. Shocking view of a brick wall. Overall then a bit overpriced.
- Guy (10/5): - Friendly staff, cosy hotel, good food and service.
- Mathew (10/5): - Service was fantastic. Staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you.
A cosy
- Janet Chamberlin (10/5): A really lovely hotel for a short break. - Y Branwen is a lovely place to stay. The decor was gorgeous. We had horrible weather - cold rain in February. We asked for the heating to be put on in the room and it was soon very warm. (The ensuite towel rail was lovely and warm already. ) The room was very clean.
The bed and large and very comfortable- my partner says he had the best nights sleep ever! The white bedding was luxurious.
The hotel is next to a busy road and a railway line but we couldn’t hear it during the night. The trains were very quiet.
We ate in the brasserie downstairs on the first night and had a lovely meal. Breakfasts were delicious. ( vegetarian and vegan options available) We had to ask for orange juice to be brought out even though it was on the menu. Perhaps a large jug of milk could have been available for the cereals as we had to use our milk jug which came with the pot of tea. It was nice to see no plastic packaging for the jam, yogurt, butter.
Delicious biscuits provided in a jar in our bedroom.
2 lovely well behaved dogs were usually laying in the foyer to welcome you . Something to be aware of if you have a problem with dogs maybe. The management and staff were so helpful and friendly.
- David (8/5): Great location for nature - We went in January so the built environs we a bit grey and grim, but this was balanced out by a wonderful beach (10 minute walk thru dunes) and dramatic mountain backdrops. The people at the hotel are friendly, the food is pretty good, and there is a pleasant bar. If we go again we would choose summer though.
- BRiAN (10/5): - The hotel was clean and tidy the staff were very polite and efficient and very helpful..I couldn't have asked for expected more.Well done and thank you.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff were really lovely and accommodating Food was excellent!
- Charles (8/5): Great staff - Great staff. Very friendly and accommodating.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great dog friendly B&B! lovely room and very clean. Great bar and restaurant area and very good food. Highly recommended!
- Joanne (8/5): Ok stay - Food, staff & service were good. Bedroom and bathroom was outdated. photo of the room on hotels. com was not the same room we had been given. Bit disappointed.
- Michael (8/5): Good dog-friendly small hotel - Lovely to have a nice, cozy dog-friendly place to stay. Food was good, and staff were very helpful and friendly. Hotel was well located for visiting towns and lovely beaches in the area.
- T (10/5): - Friendly service clean room
Excellent breakfast
Comfortable beds
- Brian (10/5): Harlech’s hidden gem - Nice room. Lovely bar with a local feel and fantastic food with fantastic service.

- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very welcoming staff excellent food and comfortable bed.The bedroom could do with refreshing paint wise
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly welcome. Lovely clean room. Breakfast and dinner excellent. Very glad we stayed here.
- craig (10/5): PERFECT ! - Perfect location short walk into town or across the road to the beach through the golf course, catered for a Vegan breakfast as well
- kim (10/5): Great hotel - Staff are great. Room was sweet.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The only improvement would be to have a fan in the room it was a little hot!
- Karen (10/5): - Lovely hotel beautiful food the host are very welcoming lovely and cleàn
- Helen (8/5): Comfortable room, convenient location - Conveniently located and confortable spacipus room. Dinner was good and reasonably priced. Breakfast was good too. Traffic on the road immediately outside was a bit noisy, though.
- Hazel (10/5): Excellent Harlech Stay - Excellent stay. Very welcoming. Room was lovely and comfortable. Excellent breakfast!
- Simona (10/5): Nice place - No faults. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room looked like freshly redecorated and clean.
- Jon (10/5): - Excellent and friendly welcome. Both the breakfast and evening meals were terrific
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean spacious unique room. Fabulous home cooked food at a reasonable price.
- Alan (8/5): Great food and attentive staff. - Hotel was excellent downstairs but rooms a little tired but comfortable. Adjacent to main road and close to railway line so a little noisy at night, especially on hot nights with windows open. Top class restaurant downstairs with great breakfast and extremely accommodating staff. They are without exception an asset to the establishment. Thanks for making our stay so welcoming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The food here was excellent and the staff were helpful and friendly and the place had a great atmosphere location was also good I highly recommend this hotel
- Nick (8/5): - Very nice facility with excellent service. Only knock is its location along highway
- Mary (10/5): Excellent food, friendly staff very good service - Lovely stay really friendly but professional hosts very comfortable room and fantastic service. The food was outstanding and the lamb two ways was the best lamb dish we had eaten for many years - delicious - I had to have the same again on the last night.
- Alan (8/5): - If you are looking for a comfortable bed this Is the place! Be prepared for traffic and train noise. The restaurant, pub could be noisy. The food is very good.
- Geoff (10/5): - Excellent view of harlech castle the hotel is a beautiful standard and staff couldnt do enough
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The house was owned by our family from 1900 to 1950 ans has been
recently extended as a hotel. It was our holiday house as children so
there was much enjoyment
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The staff was lovely and attentive, bar and restaurant lovely and very dog friendly! Unfortunately the property is on top of a very busy road and rail line, so it's quite noisy.
- Chris (8/5): - The room was clean and comfortable and the owners were very welcoming. The restaurant was also quite good. Very close to a beautiful golf course and walking path to the sea shore!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very welcoming and helpful staff. The evening meal and breakfast were delicious.
- Roderick (8/5): - This a very comfortable hotel, close to the beach and the town. The room I had was very comfortable and a good size. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As it is an older building the passage way and stairs leading to the bedrooms are narrow and the first floor corridor creaks. Wifi is available but it can be difficult to connect to it. The bar and restaurant are well appointed and the food is good quality. Overall this was a very good hotel and I would be happy to stay there again.
- Lyndsay (10/5): Fabulous Place to stay and eat - The food in the in the restaurant is outstanding
Lovely room
Fantastic breakfast
Fabulous Customer Service
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely position close to train station . Very friendly staff. Good sized room with comfortable beds! Only downside was internet connection very poor in room, possibly because of hotel position beneath castle hill?
- ALISON (10/5): Birthday stay - Warm, friendly, welcoming and dog-friendly. Little extras and attention to detail helped to make the stay enjoyable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really enjoyed our stay at Y Branwen. Has really welcoming staff and the restaurant is quality as was the service. We loved it so much wy wife left wth out handing the room key back (sorry Ian, it’s in the post!)
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good hotel - bedrooms good, breakfast good. and the packed breakfast a nice touch and useful. Ambiance good. Bit disappointed with little use being made of bilingual signs menu etc. Very Welsh area but still the language is struggling. At least a nod to the language would be welcome. That did disappoint. Hotel good. But the language?
- Daniel (10/5): Fantastic - My stay at Y Branwen was fantastic.
Ian & Rohan made me fell very welcome during my visit.
The hotel has recently had a big refurbishment and looks amazing.
Being on the doorstep of the castle makes it even better.
This will definitely be my place to stay when I'm working in the area next.
Thanks for a lovely visit both.
